Abstract:Precise optical mode matching is of critical importance in experiments using squeezed-vacuum states. Automatic spatial-mode matching schemes have the potential to reduce losses and improve loss stability. However, in quantum-enhanced coupled-cavity experiments, such as gravitational-wave detectors, one must also ensure that the sub-cavities are also mode matched. We propose a new mode sensing scheme, which works for simple and coupled cavities. The scheme requires no moving parts, nor tuning of Gouy phases. Instead a diagnostic field tuned to the HG20/LG10 mode frequency is used. The error signals are derived to be proportional to the difference in waist position, and difference in Rayleigh ranges, between the sub-cavity eigenmodes. The two error signals are separable by 90 degrees of demodulation phase. We demonstrate reasonable error signals for a simplified Einstein Telescope optical design. This work will facilitate routine use of extremely high levels of squeezing in current and future gravitational-wave detectors.

Abstract:We suggest and demonstrate a tomographic method to characterise homodyne detectors at the quantum level. The positive operator measure associated with the detector is expanded in a quadrature basis and probed with a set of coherent states. The coefficients of the expansion are then retrieved using a least squares algorithm. Our model is general enough to describe different implementations of the homodyne setup, and it has proven capable of effectively describing the detector response to different tomographic sets. We validate the reconstructed operator measure on nonclassical states and exploit results to estimate the overall quantum efficiency of the detector.

Digital homodyne and heterodyne detection for stationary bosonic modes

Abstract:Homo- and heterodyne detection are fundamental techniques for measuring propagating electromagnetic fields. However, applying these techniques to stationary fields confined in cavities poses a challenge. As a way to overcome this challenge, we propose to use repeated indirect measurements of a two-level system interacting with the cavity. We demonstrate numerically that the proposed measurement scheme faithfully reproduces measurement statistics of homo- or heterodyne detection at the single-shot level. The scheme can be implemented in various physical architectures, including circuit quantum electrodynamics. Our results pave the way to the implementation of quantum algorithms requiring linear detection, including quantum verification protocols, in stationary modes.

Abstract:The quantum spin states of an atomic ensemble are of special interest to both fundamental studies and precision measurement applications. Here, we propose a scheme to prepare collective quantum states of an atomic ensemble placed in an optical cavity via homodyne measurement of a probing light field. The effective interactions of atoms mediated by photons are enhanced by the optical cavity, and the output probe light could also be entangled with the collective spin states. By selectively measuring the quadrature of the output light, we can prepare various quantum states, including superposition states of Dicke states and Dicke squeezed states. It is also demonstrated that the fidelity of the prepared quantum state can be enhanced by repetitive homodyne detection and using longer probe laser pulses. With the experimental parameters, we discuss some imperfections, including background noise, fluctuation of the measurement outcomes, and free-space scattering.We believe that our scheme should be feasible for experimental realization with current technologies, which may be used in the future study of quantum mechanics and quantum metrology.

Abstract:We report the design of a solid-state, micron-sized hemispherical cavity that yields significantly enhanced extraction efficiency with modest Purcell enhancement from embedded quantum emitters. A simple analytical model provides a guideline for the design and optimization of the structure, while finite-difference time-domain simulations are used for full analysis of the optimum structure. Cavity modes with up to 90% extraction efficiency, a Purcell enhancement factor >2, and a quality factor of ≈50 are achieved. In addition, Gaussian-like far-field beam profiles with low divergence are exhibited for several modes. These monolithic cavities are promising for solid-state emitters buried in a high dielectric environment, such as self-assembled quantum dots and optically active defects in diamond.

Abstract:Homodyne tomography - i. e. homodyning while scanning the local oscillator phase - is now a well assessed method for ``measuring'' the quantum state. In this paper I will show how it can be used as a kind of universal detection, for measuring generic field operators, however at expense of some additional noise. The general class of field operators that can be measured in this way is presented, and includes also operators that are inaccessible to heterodyne detection. The noise from tomographical homodyning is compared to that from heterodyning, for those operators that can be measured in both ways. It turns out that for some operators homodyning is better than heterodyning when the mean photon number is sufficiently small. Finally, the robustness of the method to additive phase-insensitive noise is analyzed. It is shown that just half photon of thermal noise would spoil the measurement completely.

Abstract:Demands for single-photon sources are ubiquitous in quantum information processing as well as in quantum metrology. In many protocols for producing single photons, a cavity-emitter configuration is used. In such cavity quantum electrodynamical systems, the cavity can enforce a well-defined output mode for the photon and enhance its collection efficiency, while the emitter is indispensable for single photon emission. Here we show the two cavity-one two-level emitter configuration can be used to produce exclusively photon pairs, with each photon in a separate mode. Conditioning on detecting a photon in one of the modes, one heralds with high fidelity a single photon in the other mode. Counterintuitively, upon decreasing the coupling of the emitter to one of the modes, the heralding fidelity can further increase.

Abstract:We review experimental work on the measurement of the quantum state of optical fields, and the relevant theoretical background. The basic technique of optical homodyne tomography is described with particular attention paid to the role played by balanced homodyne detection in this process. We discuss some of the original single-mode squeezed-state measurements as well as recent developments including: other field states, multimode measurements, array detection, and other new homodyne schemes. We also discuss applications of state measurement techniques to an area of scientific and technological importance--the ultrafast sampling of time-resolved photon statistics.

Abstract:We present a quantum thermometry scheme based on a cavity-QED setup, which attains a sensitivity with Heisenberg scaling. A stream of identical two-level systems passes through a thermal bath to be tested. Each system partially thermalizes, carrying information on the temperature of the thermal bath, and it then interacts with a dissipative single-mode cavity. The Heisenberg scaling is attained from the initial coherence of each system. The systems cannot be fully thermalized by the thermal bath. The optimal interaction time between the system and the thermal bath is derived. Direct photon detection is proved to be an optimal measurement when there is no extra thermal bath in the cavity. In the case where there is an extra thermal bath in the cavity independent of the thermal bath to be tested, homodyne detection is the optimal measurement. Moreover, we show that direct photon detection obtains less information in the case where the extra thermal bath in the cavity is in thermal equilibrium with the thermal bath. However, the optimal measurement can utilize the information from the extra thermal bath to improve the estimation precision of the temperature.

Abstract:Advancements in quantum system lifetimes and control have enabled the creation of increasingly complex quantum states, such as those on multiple bosonic cavity modes. When characterizing these states, traditional tomography scales exponentially in both computational and experimental measurement requirement, which becomes prohibitive as the state size increases. Here, we implement a state reconstruction method whose sampling requirement instead scales polynomially with subspace size, and thus mode number, for states that can be expressed within such a subspace. We demonstrate this improved scaling with Wigner tomography of multimode entangled W states of up to 4 modes on a 3D circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) system. This approach performs similarly in efficiency to existing matrix inversion methods for 2 modes, and demonstrates a noticeable improvement for 3 and 4 modes, with even greater theoretical gains at higher mode numbers.

Abstract:We present an experimental study on the cavity-atom ensemble system, and realize the doubly-resonant cavity enhanced electromagnetically induced transparency, where both the probe and control lasers are resonant with a Fabry-Perot cavity. We demonstrate the precise frequency manipulating of the hybrid optical-atomic resonances, through either temperature or cavity length tuning. In such a system, the control power can be greatly enhanced due to the cavity, and all-optical switching is achieved with a much lower control laser power compared to previous studies. A new theoretical model is developed to describe the effective three-wave mixing process between spin-wave and optical modes. Interesting non-Hermitian physics are predicted theoretically and demonstrated experimentally. Such a doubly-resonant cavity-atom ensemble system without a specially designed cavity can be used for future applications, such as optical signal storage and microwave-to-optical frequency conversion.
High-efficiency microwave photodetection by cavity coupled double dots with single cavity-photon sensitivity

Abstract:We present a superconducting cavity-coupled double quantum dot (DQD) photodiode that achieves a maximum photon-to-electron conversion efficiency of 25% in the microwave domain. With a higher-quality-factor cavity and improved device design to prevent photon leakages through unwanted pathways, our device measures microwave signals down to 100 aW power level and achieves sensitivity to probe microwave signals with one photon at a time in the cavity. We analyze the photodiode operation using Jaynes-Cummings input-output theory, identifying the key improvements of stronger cavity-DQD coupling needed to achieve near-unity photodetection efficiency. The results presented in this work represent a crucial advancement toward near unity microwave photodetection efficiency with single cavity-photon sensitivity for studies of photon statistics in the microwave range and applications related to quantum information processing.

Abstract:We propose to realize microwave quantum illumination in weak coupling regime based on multimode optomechanical systems. In our proposal the multimode together with a frequency-mismatch process could reduce mechanical thermal noise. Therefore, we achieve a significant reduction of error probability than conventional detector in weak coupling regime. Moreover, we optimize the signal-to-noise ratio for limited bandwidth by tuning the delay time of entangled wave-packets.

Abstract:This paper contains a theoretical treatment of a scheme for determining phase-dependent features of a single mode of quantized light fields in general states. The proposal involves using a three-level atom, in a cascade configuration, as a detector. The cascade atom, which is on two-photon resonance with the field, is prepared in a coherent superposition of the upper and lower levels, and detection involves measuring the probability of the cascade atom being in the upper level. The results depend on the phase difference between the amplitudes for the field being in N and N + 2 photon states in the number state basis, and are important in describing nonclassical states, such as squeezed and Schrodinger cat states. The analysis is based on a standard dressed atom model approach and a Fourier treatment of the measured signal. The experimental possibilities of realizing this scheme are also discussed.

Abstract:Balanced homodyning, heterodyning and unbalanced homodyning are the three well-known sampling techniques used in quantum optics to characterize all possible photonic sources in continuous-variable quantum information theory. We show that for all quantum states and all observable-parameter tomography schemes, which includes the reconstructions of arbitrary operator moments and phase-space quasi-distributions, localized sampling with unbalanced homodyning is always tomographically more powerful (gives more accurate estimators) than delocalized sampling with heterodyning. The latter is recently known to often give more accurate parameter reconstructions than conventional marginalized sampling with balanced homodyning. This result also holds for realistic photodetectors with subunit efficiency. With examples from first- through fourth-moment tomography, we demonstrate that unbalanced homodyning can outperform balanced homodyning when heterodyning fails to do so. This new benchmark takes us one step towards optimal continuous-variable tomography with conventional photodetectors and minimal experimental components.

Cavity enhanced parametric homodyne detection of a squeezed quantum comb

Abstract:A squeezed state with higher-order sidebands is a valuable quantum resource for channel multiplexing quantum communication. However, balanced homodyne detection used in nonclassical light detection has a trade-off performance between the detection bandwidth and clearance, in which the verification of a highly squeezing factor faces a challenge. Here, we construct two optical parametric amplifiers with cavity enhancement; one is for the generation of a -10.5 dB squeezed vacuum state, and the other is for all-optical phase-sensitive parametric homodyne detection. Finally, -6.5 dB squeezing at the carrier with 17 pairs of squeezing sidebands (bandwidth of 156 GHz) is directly and simultaneously observed. In particular, for the cavity-enhanced parametric oscillation and detection processes, we analyze the limiting factors of the detectable bandwidth and measurement deviation from the generated value, which indicates that the length difference and propagation loss between two optical parametric amplifiers should be as small as possible to improve the detection performance. The experimental results confirm our theoretical analysis.
