Abstract:The third-order nonlinearities of PbS nano-belts have been investigated using the Z-scan technique with nanosecond laser pulses at 532 nm. The effect of the PbS semiconductor nano-belt size on the third-order optical nonlinearities and optical limiting properties was studied. We found that the nonlinear absorption and nonlinear refraction have not strict dependence on the nano-belt size under our investigated condition, but their optical limiting behavior is different. The optical limiting mechanism of materials is discussed.
Organic metallic epsilon-near-zero materials with large ultrafast optical nonlinearity

Abstract:Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) materials have shown significant potential for nonlinear optical applications due to their ultrafast hot carriers and consequent optical nonlinearity enhancement. Modified poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) films show metallic characteristics and a resultant ENZ wavelength near 1550nm through polar solvent treatment and annealing. The metallic PEDOT film exhibits an intrinsic optical nonlinear response that is comparable to gold and 100-fold higher than typical inorganic semiconductor ENZ materials due to {\pi}-conjugated delocalized electrons. Hot carriers generate a 22-fold increase in the optical nonlinearity coefficient of metallic PEDOT films at 1550 nm. Hot holes in metallic PEDOT films have a smaller enhancement multiple of carrier temperature and a longer relaxation time than hot electrons in inorganic ENZ materials due to the larger imaginary permittivity and hot-phonon bottleneck for carrier cooling. Our findings suggest that {\pi}-conjugated ENZ polymer may have unique ultrafast and nonlinear optical properties compared to inorganic ENZ materials, enabling new possibilities in on-chip nanophotonic devices, nonlinear optics, and plasmonics.

Abstract:Abstract It has been well‐established that light‐matter interactions, as manifested by diverse linear and nonlinear optical (NLO) processes, are mediated by real and virtual particles, such as electrons, phonons, and excitons. Polarons, often regarded as electrons dressed by phonons, are known to contribute to exotic behaviors of solids, from superconductivity to photocatalysis, while their role in materials’ NLO response remains largely unexplored. Here, the NLO response mediated by polarons supported by a model ionic metal oxide, TiO 2 , is examined. It is observed that the formation of polaronic states within the bandgap results in a dramatic enhancement of NLO absorption coefficient by over 130 times for photon energies in the sub‐bandgap regions, characterized by a 100 fs scale ultrafast response that is typical for thermalized electrons in metals. The ultrafast polaronic NLO response is then exploited for the development of all‐optical switches for ultrafast pulse generation in near‐infrared (NIR) fiber lasers and modulation of optical signal in the telecommunication band based on evanescent interaction on a planar waveguide chip. These results suggest that the polarons supported by dielectric ionic oxides can fill the gaps left by dielectric and metallic materials and serve as a novel platform for nonlinear photonic applications.

Abstract:The dependence on surface environment of laser-induced luminescence and the nonlinear optical response of Fe2O3 microcrystallites is studied. The luminescence is decreased, the third-order susceptibility enhanced, the excited state relaxation time is decreased and the reverse saturable absorption enhanced. These phenomena are analyzed in terms of the surface effect.
Giant optical nonlinearity of Fermi polarons in atomically thin semiconductors

Abstract:Realizing strong nonlinear optical responses is a long-standing goal of both fundamental and technological importance. Recently significant efforts have focused on exploring excitons in solids as a pathway to achieving nonlinearities even down to few-photon levels. However, a crucial tradeoff arises as strong light-matter interactions require large oscillator strength and short radiative lifetime of the excitons, which limits their interaction strength and nonlinearity. Here we experimentally demonstrate strong nonlinear optical responses by exploiting the coupling between excitons and carriers in an atomically thin semiconductor of trilayer tungsten diselenide. By controlling the electric field and electrostatic doping of the trilayer, we observe the hybridization between intralayer and interlayer excitons along with the formation of Fermi polarons due to the interactions between excitons and free carriers. We find substantial optical nonlinearity can be achieved under both continuous wave and pulsed laser excitation, where the resonance of the hole-doped Fermi polaron blueshifts by as much as ~10 meV. Intriguingly, we observe a remarkable asymmetry in the optical nonlinearity between electron and hole doping, which is tunable by the applied electric field. We attribute these features to the strong interactions between excitons and free charges with optically induced valley polarization. Our results establish that atomically thin heterostructures are a highly versatile platform for engineering nonlinear optical response with applications to classical and quantum optoelectronics, and open avenues for exploring many-body physics in hybrid Fermionic-Bosonic systems.

Abstract:Nonlinear optical materials are cornerstones of modern optics including ultrafast lasers, optical computing, and harmonic generation. The nonlinear coefficients of optical materials suffer from limitations in strength and bandwidth. Also, the nonlinear performance is typically monotonous without polarization selectivity, and to date, no natural material has been found to possess nonlinear coefficients with positive or negative signs simultaneously at a specific wavelength, all of which impede practical applications in the specific scenario. Here, we realize broadband large optical nonlinearity accompanied with ultrafast dynamics in a coupled system composed of gold dolmens and an epsilon-near-zero material for dual orthogonal polarizations simultaneously. The system also shows the polarization-selected nonlinearity transition properties, where the sign of the optical nonlinear refractive indexes can be converted via polarization switching. This guarantees active transitions from self-focusing to self-defocusing by polarization rotation without tuning wavelength in practical utilizations. The measured nonlinear refractive index and susceptibility demonstrate more than three orders of magnitude enhancement over a 400-nm-bandwidth compared with the constituents, while maintaining the sub-1 ps time response. The realized enhanced, ultrafast response, and the polarization tunability ensure the designed system a promising platform for the development of integrated ultrafast laser sources, all-optical circuits and quantum chips.
Lead‐Sulfide‐Based Hybrid Inorganic‐Organic Superlattice Particles for Prominent Nonlinear Optical Absorption

Abstract:Hybrid inorganic‐organic superlattice particles of PbS2/Cn (n = 4, 6, and 8) are synthesized and demonstrate significant optical nonlinearity under femtosecond laser excitation across the 515 nm to 900 nm wavelength range. Extending the organic spacer length yields enhanced nonlinear optical absorption, a phenomenon attributed to quantum confinement and dielectric enhancement within the superlattice structure. Simultaneously optimizing nonlinear absorption coefficient and modulation depth is a considerable challenge for nonlinear optical materials. Here we present an effective solution through constructing PbS2‐based inorganic‐organic superlattice. PbS2/Cn superlattice particles are synthesized, where n (4, 6, and 8) denotes the number of carbon atoms in the organic component. First‐principles simulations indicate the formation of covalent bonds and van der Waals interaction between PbS2 unit and interlayer organic molecules. All samples exhibit strong nonlinear absorption under femtosecond laser excitation with a wavelength range between 515 nm and 900 nm, and the nonlinear absorption coefficient increases with interlayer distance. The optimized sample, PbS2/C8, demonstrates outstanding nonlinear absorption and substantial modulation depth under 800 nm (the third‐order nonlinear absorption coefficient βeff, 10449 ± 609 cm GW−1; modulation depth, 39.1%) and 900 nm (the fifth‐order nonlinear absorption coefficient γeff, 6465 ± 68 cm3 GW−2; modulation depth, 88.1%), which exhibits saturable absorption under 515 nm (βeff, ‐4932 ± 818 cm GW−1; modulation depth, 48.1%). It exhibits a small optical limiting threshold of 1.23 mJ cm−2. These performances surpass those of typical single‐/few‐layer metal chalcogenides. Structural and spectral analyses elucidate that the remarkable optical nonlinearity can be attributed to quantum confinement in the inorganic layer and the dielectric enhancement of the superlattice.

Abstract:Benefiting from excitonic charge-transfer states, an efficient non-linear optical response is observed in type-II nanocrystals by four-wave mixing when the incident photon energy lies below the bandgaps of constituent semiconductors. The non-linear optical properties in nanocrystals can be manipulated by the band alignment of the core-shell components, which serves as a promising platform to design broadband non-linear optical devices.

Abstract:The femtosecond Z-scan measurements with open-aperture of nonlinear absorption of the R2O-B2O3-SiO2 (R = Li, Na, K) polarizing oxide glass containing Ag nanorods at polarizing angle Θ = 0 and 90 degrees are performed and compared with the earlier Z-scan data obtained for the chalcogenide glasses with Cu nanoparticles (Cu:As2S3 and Cu:Ge15.8As21S63.2). The results of the present study reveal that (i) when the polarization of the laser is parallel to the long axis of the Ag nanorods (Θ=0 degrees), the saturated nonlinear absorption takes place; and (ii) when the polarization of light is perpendicular to the long axis of the Ag nanorods (Θ=90 degrees), the saturated nonlinear absorption and two-photon nonlinear absorption are observed likely to Cu:chalcogenide glasses. Ellipsometric measurements show also a dependence of the properties of the investigated polarizing glass on the sample orientation in consistence with Ag nanorod locations.

Abstract:The nonlinear optical properties for the PbO, TiO2, K2O, and SiO2 system have been measured by the Z-scan method. The magnitude and sign of the nonlinear refractive index n2 were determined, as was the negative sign, which indicated a self-defocusing optical nonlinearity. Two optical absorption bands at 540 and 660 nm, respectively, are observed in the optical absorption spectra. The sources of the absorption bands are attributed to the 3d-shell electronic transitions of Ti3+ ions from the ground state to the excited states. The origin of the negative nonlinear refractive index was the contribution of resonant electronic transition processes, which can cancel the positive nonresonant refractive index that mainly resulted from the hyperpolarizabilities of the Pb–O and Ti–O pairs.

Abstract:CsPbBr3 perovskite QDs are precipitated in a borosilicate glass matrix, while protects efficiently the QD from photo-induced and chemical degradation. We show that the CsPbBr3 QD doped glasses exhibit strong visible photoluminescence (PL), which is dependence on the concentration that can be controlled by heat treatment conditions. Due to the stabilization by the glass matrix, we are able to determine the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties with a Z-scan technique. We observe a cross-over from saturated absorption (SA) to reverse saturated absorption (RSA) by either increase the pumping intensity or the QD size, reminiscent of quantum size effect in the NLO response. The RSA is associated with two-photon absorption (TPA) that induces strong upconversion luminescence of QD doped glass samples. Our results imply that the glasses containing CsPbBr3 QDs may find potential applications from solid state lighting to ultrafast optical switches.

Abstract:By investigating the second-harmonic generation (SHG) of the bulk PbO/B2O3 glass samples with different compositions after thermal poling, it was found that there was an optimal poling temperature for each sample with different compositions and there was also a relation between optimal poling temperature and glass transition temperature. At their own optimal poling temperatures, the samples had different frequency doubling efficiencies with the same applied voltage. We also found that the frequency doubling efficiency of PbO/B2O3 glass increased with the increase of poling voltage. An induced dipole model was proposed to explain the super-quadratic relation between the SHG intensity and the poling voltage.

Abstract:Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) materials have shown significant potential for nonlinear optical applications due to their extraordinary enhancement of optical nonlinearity. Our experiments show that poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) films can be modified to boost their conductivity and exhibit ENZ wavelengths from mid-infrared to visible regimes. Degenerate optical nonlinearity coefficients of EG-modified PEDOT films with an ENZ wavelength of 1587 nm are enhanced at 1550 nm to be larger than those of most of the inorganic ENZ materials. The small linear index and the large nonlinear index cause a 210% change in transmittance between low and high power intensities. We attribute the ENZ enhancement to the increased absorptance of bipolarons in PEDOT films. The pump–probe technique reveals the transient process of the bipolaron transition. The highly tunable carrier concentration and mobility enable PEDOT to be an extraordinary nonlinear optical material, which leads to new possibilities of PEDOT:PSS in plasmonics, nonlinear optics, and on-chip nanophotonic devices.

Abstract:Metal-coated particles of nanometer dimensions can exhibit unusual optical properties due to the local-field enhancement mechanism. However, the properties are affected by uncontrollable factors that degrade the expected performance. In this paper we report theoretical results of coating thickness variations and diffuse interface effects on the optical absorption and the nonlinear optical response of particles with a CdS core and a silver coating. The linear and nonlinear optical properties are discussed within the context of the effective medium theory for small volume fractions.

Abstract:Phosphate materials are excellent candidates for nonlinear optical materials, thus necessitating a comprehensive and in-depth study of them. Here, inspired by the interesting phenomenon induced by the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effect, we extend it to LiPbPO4 compounds using a first-principles approach to probe the influence of SOC on the electronic structure and optical properties of post-transition metal compounds. The results show that only the bottom of the conduction band shows an energy level splitting with the inclusion of SOC, which is analyzed to come from the SOC in the Pb 6p state since the SOC in the O 2p state is very weak. The splitting of the conduction band triggers the decrease of the band gap and the change of the optical properties. The performance analysis shows that both the refractive index and the second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficient are enhanced with the inclusion of SOC, however, the change in the birefringence is insignificant, and it is further found that the enhanced SHG coefficient values are closer to the experimental values. In conclusion, our study reveals the impact of SOC effect on the electronic structure and optical properties of LiPbPO4 compounds, contributing to a deeper understanding of the nonlinear optical in post-transition metal compounds.

Studies of optical nonlinearity behaviors of ultrafine PbS particles in perfluorocarboxylated cation-exchanged films

Abstract:Ultrafine PbS particles with different sizes have been prepared in perfluorocarboxylated cation-exchanged films. The variation of PbS particle size was clarified by absorption spectra and TEM graphs. Time-resolved optical Kerr effects were measured by femtosecond pump-probe techniques. Optical Kerr effect response time was estimated to be less than 165 fs. A third-order optical nonlinearity of �� (3)��10 -12 esu for PbS particles was obtained and it was found that it increases with the decrease of particle sizes, showing the influence of quantum confined effect on optical nonlinear behaviour of ultrafine particles.

Abstract:Diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) colloidal nanocrystals demonstrate remarkable magneto-optical properties. However, the behavior of circular polarization of their emission in high magnetic fields remains unclear. We measure magneto-optical properties of colloidal CdSe/CdMnS nanoplatelets in high magnetic fields up to 30 T and at cryogenic temperatures. The degree of circular polarization of photoluminescence demonstrates non-monotonous behavior in a magnetic field. In low magnetic fields, the polarization degree is positive, due to an exchange interaction of excitons with localized spins of magnetic Mn ions. The exchange interaction is strong enough to overcome the intrinsic Zeeman splitting, which provides negatively polarized emission in nonmagnetic CdSe/CdS nanoplatelets. After reaching a maximum the polarization degree starts to decrease and reverses the sign to negative in high magnetic fields. The critical magnetic field, in which the sign is reversed, increases when temperature is elevated. We develop a model, which explains this behavior by an interplay of bright and dark exciton recombination.
