Abstract:In this paper, the self-damage identification and mechanical properties of hybrid carbon fiber reinforced polymer (HCFRP) and as-strengthened concrete structures are studied through characterizing their electrical and mechanical behaviors. The application of HCFRP can not only upgrade dramatically the mechanical properties of concrete structures, but also provide them with a built-in structural health monitoring (SHM) function through measuring the change in electrical resistance. The active materials are carbon fibers due to their electrical conduction, piezoresistivity, excellent mechanical properties and high resistance to corrosion. Generally, the HCFRP are designed to consist of three types of carbon fibers: high strength (HS), high modulus (HM) and middle modulus (MM), in order to realize a stage-based sensing function for practical concrete structures. The gradual ruptures of different types of carbon fibers result in sudden jumps in electrical resistance at different strains. The sudden jumps in electrical resistance can be regarded as signals on the damage stage of concrete structures, such as the initiation of crack, yielding of steel reinforcement, impending failure etc. Thus, a stage-based sensing function for practical structures is demonstrated.
