Abstract:Fiber-reinforced polymer reinforcing bars have been developed for use with concrete due to their excellent corrosion resistance, high tensile strength, and good non-magnetization properties. However, the low modulus of elasticity of the FRP materials and their non-yielding characteristics results in large deflection in FRP reinforced concrete members. The paper is concerned with the development of simple approaches in estimating the deflection of GFRP and GFRP-steel reinforced concrete beams subjected to flexural loads. The Ad I 440 methods and the Abdalla Model for predicting deflections for glass fiber reinforced polymer reinforced concrete beams are presented in this paper. In addition, improvement to the deflection equation was suggested to account for both GFRP and steel reinforced concrete beam. This study shows that the ACI-440 guidelines and Abdalla Model for Evaluation of deflection of GFRP reinforced concrete beams overestimate the deflections of the GFRP reinforced concrete beam. And the mid-span deflection of GFRP-steel reinforced concrete beams predicted by the method is near to the measured values. But for the load less than the failure load, the deflection of GFRP and steel reinforced concrete beams are less than the result predicted by the method.
