Abstract:Problem Definition: Many digital platforms provide a search environment for consumers to evaluate sellers' products. We investigate a strategic platform's preference in search pattern (parallel pattern or sequential pattern) to keep in check consumers' search behavior and sellers' price and assortment reactions. Academic/Practical Relevance: Although both parallel and sequential patterns are prevalent in the online shopping environment, few studies have considered the platform's preferences in these search patterns, and implications in relevant operations management problems---sellers' assortment decisions in our paper. Methodology: We use the multinomial logit choice model to analytically explore the platform's preference in search pattern in anticipation that a specific pattern will affect the interactions between consumers and sellers. Consumers optimally choose the number of sellers to visit and the amount of product attributes to evaluate, and sellers optimally choose their prices and assortment levels, with all decisions being affected by which pattern the platform selects. Results: In our benchmark model with exogenous assortment level, our results show that the platform prefers parallel (sequential) pattern when the search cost is small (large) or when the assortment level is high (low). However, when the assortment level is a decision, the platform's preference will be altered qualitatively; that is, the platform prefers parallel (sequential) pattern when the search cost is large (small). We have identified several novel effects that are built off the fundamental difference between parallel and sequential patterns and use them to explain the platform's search-pattern preference. Interestingly, our paper shows that the platform can strategically use operational means (assortment prevention effect) and marketing means (pricing prevention effect) to manipulate consumers' search to maximize its profit. Managerial Implications: Our analytical predictions are consistent with several interesting observations in practice and shed some light on how a strategic platform designs its search environment and monetizes assortment management service.

Abstract:Research on two-sided markets and platforms has been the latest development in industrial economics in recent years.Traditional 'single' markets pay attention to transactions of traded goods,but in two-sided markets,platforms which facilitate two(or more) types of customers' interactions are the focus of attention.Typically the literature classifies two-sided markets into four types: intermediaries,media,payment cards and software platforms,in this article we follow this convention and survey the main contributions in these four fields,pointing out the most important issues and the future possible research directions.

Abstract:Two-sided markets,also called two-sided platforms,have two types of participants which interact through a platform,such as advertisers in a media and audiences.This paper describes pricing and competition problems in two-sided markets where the two types of participants are asymmetrical.The pricing equations are derived in Hotelling framework.When the market structure changes and the competition intensifies,the platform price structure will charge accordingly.The basic problems about the price structure in two-sided markets are explained in the framework.The results show that when the market structure is a monopoly,the monopoly platform will charge less to one side,while when the market structure becomes an oligopoly,the two platforms will charge less to the other side.These results will benefit firms and governments when determining prices and policies.

Abstract:Online intermediaries play an important role in facilitating transactions in electronic commerce. In this paper we apply the insights from the emerging economic literature on two-sided markets and platform competition to the analysis of intermediaries in electronic commerce. In particular we are interested in answering the following questions: (1) How to categorize intermediaries in electronic commerce? (2) What are the optimal pricing schemes in the building of an electronic intermediary platform? (3)What are the appropriate governance structures of e-commerce intermediaries in different industries? Cases based on China's e-commerce practices will be cited for the validation of the theoretical arguments.

Abstract:The e-marketplaces, which play a key role in electronic commerce with facilitating transactions and aggregating information, show positive inter-group externalities where one group's benefit from receiving a service depends on the number of the intermediary services consumed by the other group, and negative intra-group externalities where the surplus is destroyed because members within the group compete with each other. In this paper, with a different approach from the emerging theory of two-sided markets, we analyze an e-marketplace owned by a third-party firm by substituting the size of consumers with the number of intermediary services. Moreover, we pay close attention to solving the following problems: (1) When these interand intra-group externalities exist, are both the demand curves and the pricing strategies of intermediary services different from those of traditional goods? (2) How to price intermediary services to maximize profit in the e-marketplaces? (3) How do these network externalities affect the management strategy of platforms? Finally, we exemplify such analytical results as pricing strategies of platforms with managerial practice of electronic commerce. © 2010 IEEE.

Abstract:On an online shopping platform, for users on one side (buyers or sellers), the affiliation decisions depend not only on their stand-alone valuations for the platform's services, but also on the platform's user base on the other side. This paper investigates online shopping market structure based on platform services on the two sides and cross-group network effects. We find that the entry of inactive platforms hinges on the side where the strength gap between active platforms and inactive platforms is smaller, i.e. the side on which the average stand-alone valuation of users for platform services is relatively high. Specifically, given the sum of the average stand-alone valuations on the two sides, the market structure is more competitive when the proportion of the average stand-alone valuation on one side to the other is too high or too low. Furthermore, the market structure is more monopolistic when cross-group network effects are strong. We also find that social welfare and the total surplus of users on the two sides may both be lower when the market structure is more competitive. In a case where users on one side multi-home, we find that inactive platforms should pay attention to the average stand-alone valuation on the multi-homing side to enter the markets, whereas active platforms should pay attention to the average stand-alone valuation on the single-homing side to prevent the entry of inactive platforms.

Abstract:On-demand service platforms compete for both workers and customers, forming a two-sided competition. In this paper, we study the game between two platforms implied by such a two-sided competition and examine how the characteristics of the embedded workers-customers subgame affect outcomes in equilibrium. Specifically, we consider two subgame settings: (i) workers and customers move sequentially and (ii) workers and customers move simultaneously. We find that these two settings yield different subgame outcomes. In the first setting, given any platform strategy profile, there is no subgame equilibrium such that both platforms have a positive market share. In the simultaneous-move setting, such subgame equilibria can exist, though not unique. In the presence of multiple equilibria, we show that under some refinement rules both settings (the sequential and simultaneous subgames) yield the same unique pure-strategy equilibrium. We discuss how these results shed light on the competitive dynamics of on-demand service platforms in practice.

Loses On One Side and Gains On the Other:Bankcard Payment System in the Two-sided Markets

Abstract:This paper studies the bankcard payment system in the two-sided markets where the bankcard organization and merchants both have market power. In the benchmark model we show that the side fee increases in the fixed setup costs and the convenience offered to customers. In the extended model, we adopt the standard Hotelling model to describe the competition among merchants. We show that the highest fee that merchants are willing to pay is the sum of their convenience and that offered to cardholders. This enables the bankcard organization to charge a zero fee on cardholders or even to subsidize them.

Abstract:This paper describes two basic queueing models of service platforms in digital sharing economy by means of two different policies of platform matching information. We show that the two queueing models of service platforms can be expressed as the level-independent quasi birth-and-death (QBD) processes. Using the proposed QBD processes, we provide a detailed analysis for the two queueing models of service platforms, including the system stability, the average stationary numbers of seekers and of idle owners, the expected sojourn time of an arriving seeker, and the expected profits for both the service platform and each owner. Finally, numerical examples are employed to verify our theoretical results, and demonstrate how the performance measures of service platforms are influenced by some key system parameters. We believe that the methodology and results developed in this paper not only can be applied to develop a broad class of queuing models of service platforms, but also will open a series of promising innovative research on performance evaluation, optimal control and queueing-game of service platforms and digital sharing economy.

Abstract:2-sideness has been a hot topic since early this century in economic and management issues. Network effects and platform competitions are major characteristics of the 2-sided market. This paper analyses an asymmetric duopoly game with network effects in 2-sided markets. We present a 2-platform-2-provider game, in which only one of the platforms is making the pricing decision in the first stage. Both of the indirect and direct networks effects (INE & DNE) are considered in our model. We derive the equilibrium of this platform Stackelberg game (PSG) and also give a series of analysis. One of the important conclusions is that joint optimality hardly exists when DNE is not considered. A group of numerical test is also provided on sensitivity of each player's strategy.

Abstract:Internet platform enterprises have become one of the dominant organizational forms for internet-based businesses. Despite the strategically crucial role that openness decision plays for Internet platform enterprises, the results of existing research on the relationship between platform openness and platform performance are not conclusive. As to the nature of platform, its transaction attribute has been overemphasized while its innovation attribute is mostly neglected. Through decomposing platform openness into supply-side openness and demand-side openness, as well as introducing demand diversity and knowledge complexity as contextual variables, this study attempts to understand the impact of both types of attributes on performance by considering their configuration. Using fuzzy sets qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) method, we find that high demand diversity of platform users and high supply-side openness will lead to better platform performance. Moreover, the high knowledge complexity required for platform innovation together with high supply-side and demand-side openness will contribute to a high level of platform performance.

Abstract:This paper advances a framework for examining the competitive principles of mobile payment platforms. We postulate that the strategic interplay of platform layers will drive the competitive dynamics of platform-driven ubiquitous systems. This framework has been employed in a comparative case study between monopolistic (i.e., Pingit) and federated (i.e., Paym) mobile payment platforms to illustrate its applicability and yield principles on the nature and impact of competition among platform-driven ubiquitous systems. Preliminary findings indicate that monopolistic mobile digital platforms attempt to create unique configurals to obtain monopolistic power by tightly coupling platform layers, which are difficult to replicate. Conversely, federated digital platforms compete by dispersing the service layer to harness the collective resources from individual firms. Furthermore, the interaction and integration among platform layers give rise to commodity and value platform layers that translate into competitive battlegrounds among mobile payment services. This paper therefore represents a concrete step in unraveling the competitive dynamics of platform-driven ubiquitous systems from an architectural viewpoint.

Abstract:We build a novel dynamic model of two-sided markets which can be used to explore both intertemporal and cross-side pricing strategies of platform enterprise. This two-period model goes beyond the traditional two-sided market framework to examine the new intertemporal tradeoffs that a platform enterprise faces when formulating differentiating prices over time for different sides. With this dynamic framework, we analyze a new phenomenon of economic development, emerging "Digital Villages" in China, which obtain initial subsidies from e-commerce platform enterprises like Alibaba for their low-income dwellers as sellers. After these low-income sellers become more capable of running the online business through learning-by-doing, the e-commerce platform will charge them a higher fee. Recently, the economic growth of these "Digital Villages" has been phenomenal. Theoretical results based on our dynamic model indicate, if third-degree price discrimination between new and old online sellers in period 2 is allowed, the platform will charge sellers a lower fee in period 1 compared with the later period. Furthermore, when the cross-side network externality of each online seller is stronger than that of each online buyer or the learning-by-doing benefit each online seller obtains is high enough, the platform will provide subsidies for sellers in the first period. Moreover, some dynamic pricing strategies will change if this price discrimination on sellers is prohibited. Finally, we examine the effects of the price regulation on the member fees to heterogeneous groups as well as aggregate social welfare regarding the two-sided markets behind the "Digital Villages" within this new theoretical framework.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this research is to develop a comprehensive model to better understand competitive dynamics between mobile payment providers in a multi-sided market featuring customers and merchants. This is undertaken by modeling customers performing financial transactions with merchants while two mobile payment systems (MPS) providers deploy different strategies to compete for market share. Design/methodology/approach The authors developed an agent-based simulation model using the NetLogo environment. The simulation featured two competing platform providers, 1,000 customer agents and 50 merchant agents. Past research, interviews and surveys were conducted to accurately model the behavior of the agents. Each simulation run lasted for 50 time periods. A total of 1,024 experimental conditions were designed to model different competitive environments, and 50 replications were conducted for a total of 51,200 experiments. Findings The simulation model provides insight into MPS platform providers' competitive strategies by simultaneously modelling socioeconomic interactions between customers, merchants and MPS. Research limitations/implications From a methodological perspective, the paper contributes a comprehensive model that can be used to study competitive dynamics between competing platforms in a multi-sided market. From the perspective of competitive strategies, the results show that pricing alone is not sufficient to influence MPS diffusion. Interactions between pricing, customers' risk perception, perceived security and ease of use of the platform create unexpected same-side and cross-side network effects, which affect MPS diffusion. Practical implications While pricing remains a crucial lever for MPS to compete for market share, they should focus on enhancing customers' and merchants' trust and reduce their risk perception. This can be done through the improvement of the user experience of their platform, development of educational materials and marketing campaigns that address concerns around security, data breaches and perceived risk. Originality/value The paper is a direct response to a recent call for action on studying competition between MPS platforms by simultaneously modelling the socio-economic behavior of heterogeneous consumers and merchants. The proposed agent-based simulation model can be used to provide insights into competitive strategies and as a building block for subsequent research in this area.

Abstract:This paper studies equilibrium in a two-sided market represented by network platforms and heterogeneous agents. The setup below is based on the Armstrong monopoly model suggested in 2006 under the following assumptions: (1) a continuum of agents of limited size on each side of the market and (2) the heterogeneous utility of agents with the Hotelling specification. We show that the monopoly’s optimal pricing strategy always results in a corner solution in terms of the equilibrium market share. In addition, we solve the social planner’s optimization problem, obtaining a similar corner solution. Finally, we find the exact values for the equilibrium in the case of duopoly in a two-sided market with two platforms.

Abstract:This paper develops a model of two-sided pricing for a monopolistic platform and makes a comprehensive comparison of profit difference between open and closed payment platforms. This paper reveals three important results. First, the profit of an open payment platform is higher than that of a closed payment platform under the Two -part Tariff mode. Second, the profit of an open payment platform is lower than that of a closed payment platform under the membership fee mode. Third, the profit of an open payment platform outweighs that of a closed payment platform when the average price effect is strong enough under the per - transaction fee mode. And further, this paper defines the specific relationship among profit difference and three influential factors, i. e. , average price effect, per-transactional cost and intra -platform market power under the per -transaction fee mode. A sufficient condition including profit difference and three influential factors suggests the triggering mechanism, determining pattern as well as transition paths for payment platforms. These results contribute to explaining the motivation of American Express’ transition into an open platform and are helpful to understand the inefficiency of organizational reform in China's bankcard payment market.

Abstract:This paper examines a hybrid strategy of pricing control and performance investment for two-sided platforms. While many studies have investigated performance improvement in two-sided markets, few studies have noticed that users may have different investment preferences. We build a strategic model to explore how platforms can make a trade-off between investing in high performance to satisfy customer preferences versus reducing investment to facilitate service provider participation. We provide insights on the optimum investment strategy and the corresponding charging or subsidizing controls and demonstrate how ignoring the opposite preferences can lead to errors in investing in platform performance.

Abstract:Abstract The rapid development of e-commerce has greatly promoted the popularization of electronic payment methods in China. The electronic payment service of online banking solves the problem of online transaction payment in the early stage of e-commerce development. After the rise of third-party Internet-guaranteed payment services, the problem of mutual trust in online shopping was solved in a breakthrough way, and the electronic payment service model was continuously innovated, and the electronic payment service scene was rapidly expanded and popularized. In this process, the relationship between third-party payment service providers and online banking has evolved from cooperation to competition, and has been developing in the contradiction between competition and cooperation. At the same time, the third-party payment model has brought great challenges to financial supervision. Based on the respective interests of the main participants in the electronic payment market, this paper applies game theory and its Nash equilibrium theory to analyze the optimal strategy choices of the participating entities in the electronic payment market, and gives their respective development strategies.
