Abstract:A series of Ni(II) complexes 4a-f ligated by the unsymmetrical phosphino-oxazolines (PHOX) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis and IR spectroscopy, and the structures of complexes 4c-4e were confirmed by the X-ray crystallographic analysis. All derivatives showed distorted tetrahedron geometry by the nickel center and coordinative atoms. Upon activation with methylaluminoxane (MAO) or Et2AlCl, these complexes exhibited considerable to high activity of ethylene oligomerization. The ligands environments and reaction conditions significantly affect their catalytic activities, while the highest oligomerization activity (Up to 1. 18 X 10(6) g center dot mol(-1) (Ni) - h(-1)) was observed for 4d at 20 atm of ethylene. Abstract:A series of nickel (11) complexes ligated by 2-imino-1,10-phenanthrolines were synthesized and characterized by elemental and spectroscopic analysis as well as by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. X-ray crystallographic analysis reveals complexes 3, 5, 7 and 11 as the five-coordinated distorted trigonal-bipyramidal geometry. Upon activation with Et(2)AlCl, these complexes exhibited considerably high activity for ethylene oligomerization (up to 3.76 x 10(7) g mol(-1) (Ni) h(-1) for 12 with 10 equiv. of PPh(3)). Abstract:A series of 2-imino-9-phenyl-1,10-phenanthrolines 1-6 has been prepared and investigated as new tridentate N3 ligands in coordination with metal chlorides. Their iron(II) (1a-6a), cobalt(II) (1b-6b), and nickel(II) (1c-6c) complexes have been synthesized and characterized by elemental and spectroscopic analysis in conjunction with single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Some of the iron complexes show good activities in the selective dimerization of ethylene upon treatment with MAO or MMAO, while the cobalt complexes show higher activities than their iron analogues and lead to the formation of C-6 and C-8 oligomers. The nickel complexes display high catalytic activities toward ethylene oligomerization in the presence of Et2AlCl and an auxiliary ligand (PPh3). ((c) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Abstract:A series of 2-(benzimidazol-2-yl)-1,10-phenanthrolines and their nickel(II) complexes were synthesized and characterized by elemental and spectroscopic analysis along with single-crystal X-ray crystallography. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that complexes la and 6a have a six-coordinate distorted octahedral geometry due to the coordination of solvent molecules, whereas 3a is a centrosymmetric dimer in the solid state and 5b displays a five-coordinate distorted trigonal-bipyramidal geometry. Upon activation with diethylaluminum chloride (Et2AlCl), high catalytic activity up 1.27X10(7) g-mol(-1)(Ni)-h(-1) and high selectivity for 1-butene (90.5%) could be achieved. A higher activity up to 3.95 X 10(7) g-mol(-1)(Ni)-h(-1) was observed in the 7a/Et2AlCl system with addition of 20 equiv. of PPh3 as an auxiliary ligand. Abstract:A series of new neutral arylnickel(II) phosphine complexes bearing non-symmetric bidentate chelate ligands, 3-aryliminomethyl-5-chloro-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde, have been synthesized, and the structure of representative complexes (2b and 2d) has been confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. These neutral arylnickel(II) phosphine complexes have been investigated as catalysts for ethylene oligomerization. Using methylaluminoxane (MAO) as a cocatalyst, these complexes display high ethylene oligomerization activities. A catalytic activity of up to 4.6×106gmol−1h−1 has been observed. The influence of Al/Ni molar ratio, reaction temperature, reaction period and pressure on catalytic activity was investigated.

Abstract:A series of nickel(II) α-diimine complexes with strong electron-withdrawing carboxyl groups, having reactive hydrogen atoms, were prepared and used as precatalysts for ethylene oligomerization and/or polymerization. The influence of metal halides and ligand structure on the catalytic activity and properties of products was investigated. The results showed that nickel bromide was much more active than nickel chloride, and the substituents at the ortho-position of aryl ring had large influence on the properties of products. Therefore, the products ranging from liquid oligomers to polymers could be readily obtained by the variation of the substituents on the ligands and reaction conditions.

Abstract:A series of N,N,N-tridentate iron (II) complexes bearing 2-imino-1,10-phenanthrolines, [2-{(2,6-R1,R3-4-R2-C6H2)NC(R)}-1,10-phen]FeCl2, was synthesized and characterized by IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. One of these complexes (18b) was determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography for its unambiguous structure. These iron(II) complexes were found to exhibit remarkable activities for ethylene oligomerization in the presence of MAO or MMAO cocatalyst affording α-olefins with high selectivity and the composition of oligomers followed the Schluz–Flory distribution. The effects of substituents on imino fragment on the activity were explored in detail; complexes with mono substituent at the ortho-position of the phenyl ring showed high activities with low K values, suggesting that fine tuning of the steric bulk of substituents on the imino fragment directly affects both the activity and the selectivity.

Abstract:The novel chloro(1-naphthyl) [8-(diphenylphosphino) quinoline] nickel(II) (1), chloro(1-naphthyl) [2-methyl-8( diphenylphosphino) quinoline] nickel(II) (2), and [2-methyl-8- (diphenylphosphino) quinoline] nickel(II) dichloride ( 3) complexes were synthesized in satisfactory yield and fully characterized. The structures of complexes 1 and 3 were determined by single crystal X-ray analysis, which indicated that complex 1 exists in a square planar configuration, while complex 3 is dimeric square pyramidal. In the presence of MAO cocatalyst, complexes 1 3 displayed good catalytic activities for ethylene oligomerization in toluene, up to 2.45 x 10(5) g ethylene ( mol Ni.h.atm)(-1) by complex 3.

Abstract:A series of bridged bis(pyridinylimino) ligands were efficiently synthesized through the condensation reaction of 4,4'-methylenebis(2,6-disubstituted aniline) with 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde or 2-benzoylpyridine. They reacted with (DME)NiBr(2) to form dinuclear Ni(II) complexes. All resultant compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectra as well as the single-crystal X-ray diffraction to confirm the structures of ligands and complexes. Activated with methylaluminoxane (MAO), these nickel complexes showed considerably good activities for ethylene oligomerization and polymerization. Abstract:The 2-alkoxyimidate-1,10-phenanthroline complexes of manganese, cobalt and nickel have been synthesized by the reaction of 2-cyano-1,10-phenanthroline with metal dichloride in the corresponding alcohol. The metal complexes bearing two 2-cyano- 1,10-phenanthrolines were isolated in non-protonic solvent as the coordination around metal core with two ligands and two chlorides. The alkoxyimidation of nitrile linked on ligand was speeded in forming the 2-alkoxyimidate-1,10-phenanthrolinyl metal complexes. All the complexes have been characterized by FT-IR spectra and elemental analysis, and some of their structures have also been confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. All the metal complexes were evaluated in the catalytic oligomerization of ethylene with some alkylaluminums as co-catalyst; in which manganese complexes were less active, cobalt complexes showed low to moderate activities, and nickel complexes gave moderate to good activities. Abstract:A series of cobalt(II) complexes containing 2-imino-1,10-phenanthrolines have been synthesized and characterized by elemental and spectroscopic analysis. The molecular structures of complexes 2, 3, 8 and 14 were confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. Abstract:The N boolean AND N boolean AND N-tridentatc metal complexes, LMCl2 (M = Fe or Co; L represents a ligand of 2-(benzimidazol-2-yl)-l, 10-phenanthrolines), were synthesized and fully characterized with spectroscopic and elemental analysis. The single-crystal X-ray crystallographic analyses revealed complex 1a with a distorted octahedron geometry due to incorporating one methanol molecule, and complexes 5a and 9b with a distorted trigonal-bipyramidal geometry. Upon activation with modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO), these complexes showed good to high catalytic activities toward ethylene oligomerization. Abstract:A series of iron complexes containing 2-imino-1,10-phenanthrolinyl ligands, LFeCl 2 (L=2-(ArN=CR)-1,10-phen), have been synthesized and sufficiently characterized by elemental and spectroscopic analysis as well as by X-ray diffraction analysis. Upon activation with methylaluminoxane (MAO), these iron(II) complexes showed high catalytic activities [up to 4.91×10 7 g mol 1 (Fe) h 1 ] for ethylene oligomerization. The distribution of oligomers produced follows Schluz-Flory rule with high selectivity of α-olefins. Both the steric and electronic effects of coordinative ligands affect the catalytic activity and the properties of the resultant products. The parameters of the reaction conditions were also investigated to explore the catalytic potentials of these complexes.

Abstract:Progress on developing chromium-, iron- and nickel-based catalysts for ethylene oligomerization during the last decade was reviewed. Chromium-based catalysts mainly included chromium complexes bearing tridentate ligands with ligating atoms of phosphorus, nitrogen and sulfur, and diphosphinoamine ligands. The former could be used to produce 1-hexene very selectively. The activity of catalyst with the ligand could reach 1.6 × 105 g/mole-hr. The latter could control selectivity to 1-hexene and 1-octene by varying substituents of ligands. Iron-based catalysts mainly included iron complexes of bis(imino) pyridine, pyridinylimine, and 2-imino-1,10-phenanthroline. The oligomers produced followed Schluz-Flory rules with higher selectivity to α-olefins. Bis(imino) pyridine iron complexes exhibited highest activity of 5 × 109 g/(mole-hr). Ligands of nickel-based catalysts mainly included natural ligands with nitrogen or phosphorus atoms and N,O- or P,O-coordinated anion ligands. α-Diimine nickel complexes were higher in catalytic activity, while most of other nickel complexes were not so active. Oligomers with short-chain could be obtained from them, but selectivity to α-olefins was not promising.

Abstract:The Pd(II) complex [PdCl2(1)] [1 = ({oxazolin-2-yl}methyl)diphenylphosphine] was obtained by the 1 : 1 reaction of 1 with [PdCl2(NCPh)(2)]. Although this neutral complex is stable in the solid-state and in solution, it reacts with the dinuclear complex [CoCl2(mu-1)](2) to afford the heterometallic zwitterionic complex [{PdCl(1)}(+)(mu-1)(CoCl3)(-)] (2). Under inert atmosphere, two equivalents of 1 reacted with [NiCl2(dme)] to give trans-[NiCl2(1)(2)] (3) in CH2Cl2 but cis-[NiCl2(1)(2)] (4) in CHCl3. When the latter reaction was performed in air, trans-[NiCl2(5)(2)] (6) [5 = ({oxazolin-2-yl} methyl) diphenylphosphine oxide] was obtained. All metal complexes, 2, 3, 4 and 6, have been structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. Complexes 3, 4 and 6 have been evaluated as precatalysts for ethylene oligomerisation in the presence of AlEtCl2 as cocatalyst. Complexes 3 and 6 yielded a turnover frequency (TOF) of 60 700 and 62 600 mol of C2H4/((mol of Ni)center dot h), respectively, in the presence of 10 equiv. of AlEtCl2. In the presence of only 6 equiv. of cocatalyst, these Ni complexes yielded TOF values of 41 500 and 58 000 mol of C2H4/((mol of Ni)center dot h), respectively.

Abstract:Cobalt(ii) complexes of the type [CoCl(2)(P,N)], where P,N represents a heterobidentate phosphino- or phosphinito-oxazoline-type ligand, have been synthesised and characterised by infrared spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Their molecular structures were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction in the solid state. Whereas the phosphino-oxazoline complex [CoCl(2){Ph(2)PCH(2)ox(Me2)}] (Ph(2)PCH(2)ox(Me2) = 2-[(diphenylphosphanyl)-methyl]-4,4-dimethyl-4,5-dihydro-oxazole) () and the phosphinito-oxazoline complexes [CoCl(2){Ph(2)POCH(2)ox(Me2)}] (Ph(2)POCH(2)ox(Me2) = 1-[4,4-dimethyl-2{1-oxy(diphenylphosphino)-1-methyl}]-4,5-dihydro-oxazole) () and [CoCl(2){Ph(2)POCMe(2)ox(Me2)}] (Ph(2)POCMe(2)ox(Me2) = 1-[4,4-dimethyl-2- [1-oxy(diphenylphosphino)-1-methylethyl]]-4,5-dihydrooxazole) () are mononuclear, the phosphino-oxazoline complexes [CoCl(2){micro-i-Pr(2)PCH(2)ox}](2) (i-Pr(2)PCH(2)ox = 2-[(diisopropyl-phosphanyl)-methyl]-4,5-dihydro-oxazole) () and [CoCl(2){micro-Ph(2)PCH(2)ox}](2) (Ph(2)PCH(2)ox = 2-[(diphenyl-phosphanyl)-methyl]-4,5-dihydro-oxazole) () are dinuclear compounds and contain two bridging phosphino-oxazoline ligands which form a 10-membered ring. In the course of this work, the zwitterionic complex [CoCl(3){Ph(2)PCH(2)C(O)OCH(2)CMe(2)NH(3)] () was obtained and characterised by X-ray diffraction in which the oxazoline ring has been opened. Air-oxidation of the phosphine function of the mononuclear P,N chelate complex yielded the blue N,O-bridged, centrosymmetric dinuclear complex [[upper bond 1 start]CoCl(2){micro-OPPh(2)CH(2)[lower bond 1 start]C[double bond, length as m-dash]N[upper bond 1 end]CMe(2)CH(2)O[lower bond 1 end]}](2) () which contains a 12-membered ring. All these complexes are paramagnetic and their magnetic moments in solution were measured by the Evans method. Complexes were evaluated in the catalytic oligomerisation of ethylene with AlEtCl(2) or methylaluminoxane (MAO) as cocatalysts and provided moderate activities. In the presence of AlEtCl(2) (6-14 equiv.), the selectivities for ethylene dimers were higher than 92% and complex showed the highest turnover frequency with 14 equiv. of AlEtCl(2). When MAO was used as cocatalyst, the catalytic activities were similar to those with AlEtCl(2) but significant amounts of C(6)-C(12) oligomers were produced.

Treatment of the complexes LMX2 with methylaluminoxane (MAO) leads to active catalysts for oligomerization of ethylene with catalytic activities in the range of 1.2×105–2.1×105 g mol−1 h−1 atm−1 for Ni complexes, and ∼103 g mol−1 h−1 atm−1 for Co complexes. The oligomers were olefins from C4 to C16.
