Abstract:Using optical method to measure the simulative internal waves in laboratory is of great significance for physical oceanography and hydrodynamics. In this paper, a laser Schlieren setup and a method for laboratory study of internal waves are presented. The principle of Schlieren method is to obtain the first-order derivative of refractive index by the deflection angle of the light passing through the measured medium and determine the internal structures of the medium. The designed Schlieren setup is composed of 4 parts: an optical system, a photo-electric signal conversion, an image processing system and a stirring mechanism for internal wave generation. By means of the Schlieren setup, liquid changes caused by internal waves can be observed in real-time. Meanwhile, the vertically stratified phenomenon caused by the distribution of salinity in the brine can be analyzed through the shadow changes in the images. And the different salinity densities from rho(1) = 1.03 g/cm(3) to rho(2) = 1.01 g/cm(3) in the layered salinity density distribution brine can be distinguished. Results of the measurement indicate that the designed Schlieren setup can satisfy the requirement of laboratory experiment for internal wave measurement.
