Abstract:The impact of bleaching sequence on the brightness stability, response to refining and chemical Surface properties of fully bleached bamboo kraft pulps are described in this paper. The results show that the bleaching sequence applied has a large impact both on the brightness stability and on the strength properties of the pulps. The brightness stability under both dry and humid conditions was significantly higher for the ECF-bleached pulps than for the CEH pulp, and the contents of carbonyl groups and transition metal ions were shown to be the most important factors affecting the brightness stability of the bleached bamboo pulps. ECF-bleached pulps also gave paper sheets with better strength properties, especially tear, burst and TEA, than the CEH-bleached pulp, due to less fiber dislocations and less fiber shortening. The results also show that the Surface of all the bamboo pulps had a higher content of lignin and extractives than the bulk of the fiber and that the content of extractives on the fiber surface increased significantly during ageing. ECF-bleaching sequences give bamboo pulps with higher quality, i.e. higher brightness stability and improved strength properties, and they are thus of high interest as an alternative to CEH-bleaching.
