Abstract:Using econometric models and provincial panel data from the year 1978 to 2010, we forecast China's energy-related CO2 emissions up to 2020 to be around 9.27 to 11.22 billion metric tons, an 11% to 35% growth relative the 2010 level. China's CO2 intensity in 2020 is projected to decrease by 48% to 55% from its 2005 level, suggesting that China will overfulfil its CO2 intensity reduction target. Given that China's future economic growth is likely to be featured by the slowdown of national growth and the catch-up of less developed provinces, we find that although the GDP slowdown at national level can slow down emission growth, this slowdown effect will be largely offset by the catch-up of less developed and at the same time CO2 intensive provinces. And under this catch-up trend, the central and western provinces will become the major contribution to national emissions growth over the forecasting period.
