Abstract:Concrete arch dams are critical structures, the failure of which would lead to catastrophic effects on a regional scale. Considering the uncertainty characteristics of earthquake and the self-adjustment of inner force of arch dams, it's necessary to investigate the seismic performance index of arch dam for holistically evaluating the seismic safety of arch dam-foundation system subjected to high intensity seismic excitations. By considering the contraction joints movement and concrete material nonlinearity, a series of dynamic response-history analyses of arch dam were carried out under increasing levels of earthquakes. Based on these analyses, the performance index of crest deformation is recommended for the seismic safety assessment of arch dam. And several performance stages of seismic response including the opening of contraction joints and the distribution of concrete damage are also investigated.

Abstract:Effects of two important factors on earthquake response of high arch dams are considered and combined into one program. These factors are: effects of dam-canyon interaction and that of local nonlinearity of the contraction joint opening between the dam monoliths. The substructuring technique is employed, thus the equilibrium iteration involves only the degrees of freedom in nonlinear substructure. For modeling of rock canyon, the discrete parameters are obtained based on a curve fitting, thus allowing the nonlinear dam system to be solved in the time domain. A simplified earthquake input procedure is also used, which takes into account the radiation damping of the infinite canyon while preventing the artificial amplification of the ground motion through the rock mass. Two engineering examples are given to demonstrate the significant effects of the above-mentioned two factors on the response of the structure.

Abstract:A comprehensive study of non-linear seismic response of arch dams with contraction joint opening and joint reinforcements has been conducted. A numerical model of contraction joint reinforcements is presented for optimization control of the joint opening. The objective of this control is to reduce the joint opening and expectantly to balance the sustained loads between the horizontal and the vertical components of the dam, thus avoiding an overstress in the cantilever while retaining the release of arch tensile stresses to some extent. Several parameter studies such as critical element size and required number of joints to be simulated for convergence are also performed. As an engineering application, a 292-m high arch dam (the Xiaowan arch dam) and the Big Tujunga dam are analysed in detail. The results demonstrate that the joint opening and the corresponding load transfer from the arch to cantilever components of the dam during strong earthquakes are substantial. It is also evident that by providing sufficient strength and reinforcement flexibility, the joint opening can be controlled to some extent. However, the stress redistribution due to reinforcement control is not sufficient to avoid the overstress in the cantilever for the Xiaowan arch dam. Thus, alternative measures are discussed. Abstract:The response of two arch dams to spatially varying ground motions recorded during earthquakes is computed by a recently developed linear analysis procedure, which includes dam–water–foundation rock interaction effects and recognizes the semi‐unbounded extent of the rock and impounded water domains. By comparing the computed and recorded responses, several issues that arise in analysis of arch dams are investigated. It is also demonstrated that spatial variations in ground motion, typically ignored in engineering practice, can have profound influence on the earthquake‐induced stresses in the dam. This influence obviously depends on the degree to which ground motion varies spatially along the dam–rock interface. Thus, for the same dam, this influence could differ from one earthquake to the next, depending on the epicenter location and the focal depth of the earthquake relative to the dam site. Abstract:The nonlinear seismic behavior of arch dams with reinforced contraction joints is one of the key topics in arch dam engineering.The behavior of an arch dam model with brittle materials and reinforced contraction joints was investigated in shaking table tests with harmonic loadings and earthquake waves.The same dynamic process was then simulated with the finite element program of ADAP-88 in which the strengthening effect of the contraction joint reinforcement can be considered.The numerical results agree well with the experimental data.The test results show that the contraction joint openings are significantly reduced by the reinforcements and that the arch dam integrity is obviously improved.

Abstract:A comprehensive model is integrated in this paper to analyze the nonlinear earthquake response of arch dams. The following factors are taken into account: the semi-unbounded size of foundation rock and compressible water, the opening of contraction joints, the cracking of the dam body, and the spatial variation of ground motions. As a case study, the earthquake response of the Pacoima dam to the 1994 Northridge earthquake is investigated using the proposed model. The earthquake damage is simulated based on the actual conditions during the earthquake to verify the developed analysis model. The joint opening and concrete cracking are qualitatively reproduced, wherein the ground motion excitation is spatially defined based on the acceleration records at the dam–rock interface. Several influencing factors, such as the earthquake input mechanism, shape of the thrust block, and water level, are further considered to analyze their contribution to the actual damage. The result shows that the variation of ground motions along the dam–foundation interface may be the most important factor for the damage mode of the Pacoima dam.
Effect of Abutment Movements on Nonlinear Seismic Response of an Arch Dam

Abstract:Abutment movement that induces a reduction of the valley width in the periods of initial impoundment has been observed in a few high arch dams. In this article, the effect of the abutment movement on the nonlinear dynamic response of arch dams subjected to strong earthquakes is studied. The 285.5 m high Xiluodu arch dam is analysed. The results show that the abutment movement of 65-110 mm after initial impoundment leads to upstream displacements and a significant increase in compression stress in the arch dam under static conditions. When subjected to strong earthquake, the abutment movement results in a much larger opening of contraction joints in the middle part of the dam and prevention of opening of the other joints on both sides. Additional damage cracking is likely to occur in the surface outlets and the mid-level orifices. The damage cracking on the dam-foundation interface appears to propagate from the upstream face towards downstream, especially near the abutments where it extends one fourth thickness of the interface and is possible to damage the grout curtain.

Abstract:In this study, two different earthquake input models are introduced, i.e. massless foundation model and viscous-spring boundary input model considering radiation damping. Linear elastic and nonlinear contraction joint opening analyses of the 210m high Dagangshan arch dam under construction in China are performed using the two different earthquake input models. First, the responses of the three-dimensional (3-D) canyon without the dam are analyzed, respectively, with massless-truncated foundation and with viscous-spring boundary; second, linear and nonlinear analyses of the dam–foundation system are performed and compared by using the two input models. Hydrodynamic effects are considered using finite element discretization for incompressible reservoir fluid. It is concluded that stresses and displacements and contraction joint opening in the dam are significantly reduced both in linear and nonlinear analyses when using viscous-spring boundary model. Interestingly, in the case of linear analysis of the Dagangshan, the massless foundation input model with a relatively higher damping ratio of 10% leads to a comparable response of the dam to that using viscous-spring boundary model. In addition, the maximum tensile stresses from nonlinear analysis are 10–25% larger than that of the corresponding linear cases due to a partial release of the arch action.
Studies on seismic behavior of xiaowan arch dam and earthquake resistance measures

Abstract:The Xiaowan arch dam on the Lancang River is a 292m high dam and is now under construction at a location in a seismically active region. The design peak ground acceleration (PGA) is designated as 0.308g. The seismic behavior of the dam is studied with a 3-D coupling model of finite elements, boundary elements and infinite elements (FE-BE-IBE) in time domain. The studies highlight the effects of some key factors on nonlinear seismic responses of the dam due to contraction joint opening, including the effects of different reservoir elevations, different earthquake input and that of radiation damping of infinite canyon. Furthermore, to enhance the integrity of the dam and to control the joint opening, several alternatives of strengthening measures are discussed. Conclusions drawn from the studies may be valuable to the design and construction of 300m level high arch dams.
Nonlinear responses of high arch dams to nonuniform free field motion due to seismic input

Abstract:A nonlinear analysis of high arch dams was performed using a compled FE-BE-IBE method with nonuniform free field motion due to seismic loadings. The model can analyze the nonlinear motion of arch dams with contraction joints to analyze the effects of damping due to the infinite foundation and free field input along the canyon. Analyses of the Xiluodu Arch Dam show that the spacial variation of the amplitudes and phases of the nonuniform free field inputs significantly influence the dam responses. The spacial variation will cause the nodes to resist each other and lower the dam motion and the variation can enhance the local distortion and substantially increase the local tensile stresses resulting in joint openings in some cases. The inputs can change the mechanisms and characteristics of the dam dynamic response. Therefore, the aseismic design of high arch dams must consider the effects of the nonlinearity due to joint openings, the infinite foundation damping and the nonuniform free field input along the canyon.

Abstract:Simulation of the infinite foundation is a key issue in the seismic response analysis of high dams. This paper studies how the major characteristics of foundation models influence the nonlinear dynamic response of arch dams when the radiation damping effect is taken into account. The nonlinear dynamic responses of the 217 m high Yebatan arch dam under construction in China is performed as a numerical example. Several key factors, including truncated size, material damping and non-uniformity of the foundation, are analyzed comprehensively. The results show that the material damping and the size of the foundation affect the dynamic response of the dam when the incident wave method is used. Neglect of the material damping of the foundation is proposed to solve this problem, and its rationality is verified. In addition, the results show that the realistic non-uniformity of the foundation should be considered in the earthquake response of arch dams.

Abstract:In current engineering practice, artificial earthquake accelerograms are widely used in the seismic design of new dams. This study aims to investigate the seismic response and damage sensitivity of arch dams to artificial ground motions. A total of 32 accelerograms are artificially synthesized based on the design acceleration response spectrum. The nonlinear dynamic response of the Dagangshan Dam, an arch dam in Southwest China, to these artificial accelerograms is investigated. Dynamic response, including displacement and joint opening, and damage distribution are statistically analyzed. Results show that the seismic response and damage to a dam may significantly scatter for various accelerograms, even if the artificial accelerograms have the same response spectra, peak ground accelerations, velocities, and displacements.

Abstract:Attached outlets are integral components of arch dams to discharge flood. However, they are usually neglected in the current seismic analysis of arch dams for simplicity. This paper aims to analyze the effect of attached outlets on the nonlinear seismic response of arch dams. For this purpose, a 235 m high arch dam is analyzed as a case study. The results indicate that the effect of attached outlets on the seismic response of arch dams depends on the ground motion intensity. For the ground motions with a low peak ground acceleration (PGA), the effect of attached outlets on the concrete damage is slight and local, which is consistent with the existing perception. However, as the ground motion intensity increases, their effect extends to the entire dam body. In contrast, the influence of attached outlets on the joint opening is typically observed at the middle contraction joints. Furthermore, the model analysis demonstrates that the inertia effect of attached structures is the primary contribution to these phenomena. Finally, a simplified simulation approach is used for incorporating the influence of attached outlets by coalescing the mass to the dam surface.

Abstract:A nonlinear finite element model is developed for analyzing the seismic response of arch dam-foundation rock-reservoir system.The radiation damping of infinite foundation rock,damage of dam concrete and opening of contraction joint can be considered simultaneously in this model.The model is applied to analyze the Dagangshan high arch dam with height 210m.The effect of radiation damping on damage of dam concrete and opening of contraction joints are investigated.The results show that the radiation damping can reduce the seismic damage of the upper-middle portion of the dam and the maximum joint openings under strong earthquake.

Abstract:SUMMARY A nonlinear finite element model for earthquake response analysis of arch dam–water–foundation rock systems is proposed in this paper. The model includes dynamic dam–water and dam–foundation rock interactions, the opening of contraction joints, the radiation damping of semi‐unbounded foundation rock, the compressibility of impounded water, and the upstream energy propagating along the semi‐unbounded reservoir. Meanwhile, a new equivalent force scheme is suggested to achieve free‐field input in the model. The effects of the earthquake input mechanism, joint opening, water compressibility, and radiation damping on the earthquake response of the Ertan arch dam (240 m high) in China are investigated using the proposed model. The results show that these factors significantly affect the earthquake response of the Ertan arch dam. Such factors should therefore be considered in the earthquake response analysis and earthquake safety evaluation of high arch dams. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:Arch dams are typically built in the mountain and gorge regions with complex terrain. In the current engineering practice, foundation models are commonly simplified as the half-space with the canyon of regular geometry. The complex topography conditions above the dam crest are neglected. This study investigates the effect of realistic valley topography on the dynamic response of arch dams. The direct finite element method is generalized and applied to the dam-reservoir-foundation system with realistic valley topography. The input ground motions are transformed into the effective earthquake loads at the truncated boundaries by performing several dynamic reaction calculations using one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) auxiliary finite element models. The effect of valley topography on the seismic response of the Baihetan arch dam is evaluated as a case study. Results indicate that the valley topographic irregularities significantly influence the dynamic responses of the arch dam, including relative displacement and stress distribution. Notably, the valley topography effect on the seismic response of arch dams depends on the incident ground motions and is hardly predicted in advance, demonstrating the necessity to account for the realistic topography conditions.

Abstract:<p>This paper aims to analyze the effect of appurtenant structures on the seismic response of arch dams. For this purpose, a fine-grade finite element model is developed for the Sanhekou dam in China as a case study, which includes the discharge structure, the intake tower, the elevator shaft, and the viewing platform. The results indicate that different appurtenant structures have different influences on the seismic response of the dam. The crest spillways and the low-level outlets perforated in the dam body, significantly affect the seismic response of the local region of the arch dam body, while the appurtenant structures extending from the dam body, such as the intake tower, the elevator shaft, and the sightseeing buildings, have little influence on the seismic response of the dam body. In addition, the local vibration amplitudes of the high cantilever water inlet and the high-rise elevator shaft are significant, and thus they may be damaged under seismic loads.</p>

Abstract:To estimate the resistant effect of reinforcing steel across contraction joints on the aseismic responses of high arch dams, a nonlinear numerical analysis of contraction joint elements with reinforcements was developed to study the control of contraction joint openings to optimize the strength and flexibility. The Big Tujunga Dam was analyzed to verify the rationality of the model. The results demonstrate that with proper reinforcements, the joint opening can be controlled to some extent and the stresses can be redistributed between the arch and the cantilever components, which will enhance the aseismic safety of arch dams.
Numerical Simulation of Reinforcement Strengthening for High‐arch Dams to Resist Strong Earthquakes

Abstract:This paper focuses on analyzing the nonlinear seismic response of high-arch dams with cantilever reinforcement strengthening. A modified embedded-steel model is presented to evaluate the effects of the strengthening measure on alleviating the extension and opening of cracks under strong earthquakes. By stiffening reinforced steel. this model can easily consider the steel-concrete interaction for lightly reinforced concrete (RC) members without the need of dividing them into RC and plain concrete zones. The new tensile constitutive relations of reinforced steel are derived from the load-deformation relationship of RC members in direct tension. This model has been implemented in the finite element code and its applicability is verified by two numerical simulations for RC tests. Subsequently, numerical analyses for a 210-m high-arch dam (Dagangshan arch dam) are conducted with and without the presence of cantilever reinforcement. Numerical results show that reinforcement strengthening can reduce the nonlinear response of the arch dam, e.g. joint opening and crest displacement. and limit the extension and opening width of concrete cracks.
