Abstract:In this paper, laminar forced convective heat transfer of supercritical carbon dioxide in small tubes are investigated numerically. Typical velocity profiles, temperature profiles, Nusseit numbers, and friction factors for supercritical carbon dioxide flowing in circular tubes of 0.6 similar to 1.0 mm in diameter under both cooling and heating conditions are obtained. It is shown that due to the effect of the large variations of thermodynamic and transport properties of carbon dioxide in the supercritical region, the heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics of supercritical carbon dioxide are rather different from those of the constant-property fluids. For the supercritical carbon dioxide tube flow, hydrodynamically and thermally fully-developed flow regions can never be reached except that the fluid and the pipe wall are under the thermal equilibrium condition. For this reason, the Nusselt numbers for the supercritical carbon dioxide laminar tube flow keep changing along the tube length. The numerical solutions also demonstrate the frictional factor for the heating flow is much lower than that for the cooling flow. In addition, it has been revealed that for the supercritical carbon dioxide flow in tubes having a diameter less than 1.0 mm, the influence of the buoyancy force on the heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics can be neglected when the inlet Reynolds number is larger than 1000. The results of this paper are of significance for the design of high efficiency supercritical carbon dioxide coolers.
