Abstract:For human beings, geomagnetism has already been applied in navigation and heading systems, but up to now it is either an assistant to other navigation methods or it requires large amount of pre-stored magnetic data. Pure geomagnetic navigation is investigated in this paper where geomagnetism is the only information to be relied on. Two geomagnetic field elements are utilized in homing navigation on earth surface. The homing mechanism iteratively search the optimal homing direction for minimal travel distance, which is based on linearization approximations of the fields' distribution in a small local area. This algorithm is tested in two simulations with world magnetic model, results show that the destinations are reached effectively, which has implied potential for experiment realization in the future

Abstract:Plenty of evidence has implied that animals like pigeons and sea turtles utilize geomagnetic information for long-distance migration and homing. In this paper, we conduct an ab initio investigation to imitate a migratory animal's geomagnetic homing across a long distance over the surface of the Earth. Based on a simple assumption that such animals have a natural ability to sense and compare the included angle between the vector geomagnetic field (GF) and a specific geographic direction such as the due north, we show that a long-distance geomagnetic navigation (GN) can be accomplished without any assistance of prestored geomagnetic and geographic information, as long as the navigation is inside a vast area where such a spatial angle can uniquely determine a geographic location. Without any requirement of measuring the strength of the GF, this GN will not be visibly affected by the recurrent fluctuation of the GF that severely hampers traditional GN. By introducing the extended-Kalman-filter algorithm, it is able to find a shortcut in the geomagnetic space, overcoming interferences of strong Gaussian and local-area geomagnetic anomaly. We believe that the proposed approach will find a wide range of potential applications in global, local, and indoor navigations based on magnetic field in the future.

Abstract:Inspired by animals’ long-distance migration behaviors, we proposed a novel and reliable long-distance true navigation method based on the measurement of geomagnetic fields. By establishing a 2-D gradient approaching a coordinate plane with geomagnetic intensity and inclination, long-distance true navigation can be achieved from any starting spot in this area. Without other calibration and auxiliary information, this navigation method is highly independent, which can be used in electromagnetic shielding circumstances, such as a deep ocean. The geomagnetic intensity and inclination gradients are estimated with real-time measurement of the geomagnetic field along the navigation trajectory. With estimated local gradients, a 2-D gradient approaching algorithm can be applied to predict the heading direction, and the agent can press on toward the destination step by step. Theoretical analysis and Monte Carlo simulations verified the feasibility and practicality of this method, proving its robustness in the presence of interference and different measurement errors. It can be a promising candidate in the design of navigation systems used in autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) or platforms.

Abstract:Extensive research results have shown that animals like pigeons and turtles can use geomagnetic information for long-distance migration and homing. This article studies the bionic navigation method inspired by magnetotaxis behavior without prior knowledge. The problem of bionic geomagnetic navigation is generalized as an autonomous search of navigation path under the excitation of geomagnetic environment. The geomagnetic gradient-assisted evolutionary algorithm for long-range underwater navigation is proposed. In order to optimize the navigation path, the heading angle predicted by the geomagnetic gradient is used to constrain the sample space in the evolutionary algorithm. Then, according to the principle of multiparameter simultaneous convergence, the evaluation function is improved to enhance the reliability and accuracy of the navigation path. Simulations of the algorithm before and after improvement are carried out based on the data retrieved from the enhanced magnetic model (EMM). The performance of the improved method is evaluated and verified in the case of the area with normal geomagnetic field (GF), geomagnetic anomaly area, and multiple destinations. The simulation results show that the search efficiency and the straightness of the navigation path are greatly improved. The reason is that the constraint of sample space reduces the randomness in the process of navigation path search, and the improved evaluation function can evaluate the quality of samples more accurately. The improved algorithm also has good performance in the geomagnetic anomaly area, which indicates the potential application in the future.

Long-distance Geomagnetic Navigation in GNSS-denied Environments with Deep Reinforcement Learning

Abstract:Geomagnetic navigation has drawn increasing attention with its capacity in navigating through complex environments and its independence from external navigation services like global navigation satellite systems (GNSS). Existing studies on geomagnetic navigation, i.e., matching navigation and bionic navigation, rely on pre-stored map or extensive searches, leading to limited applicability or reduced navigation efficiency in unexplored areas. To address the issues with geomagnetic navigation in areas where GNSS is unavailable, this paper develops a deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based mechanism, especially for long-distance geomagnetic navigation. The designed mechanism trains an agent to learn and gain the magnetoreception capacity for geomagnetic navigation, rather than using any pre-stored map or extensive and expensive searching approaches. Particularly, we integrate the geomagnetic gradient-based parallel approach into geomagnetic navigation. This integration mitigates the over-exploration of the learning agent by adjusting the geomagnetic gradient, such that the obtained gradient is aligned towards the destination. We explore the effectiveness of the proposed approach via detailed numerical simulations, where we implement twin delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (TD3) in realizing the proposed approach. The results demonstrate that our approach outperforms existing metaheuristic and bionic navigation methods in long-distance missions under diverse navigation conditions.

Abstract:Path planning and navigation of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles face great challenges in unknown environments without a prior information. In this paper, a deep Q-network-based geomagnetic sensing navigation method is proposed to solve the navigation problem without a prior maps. By constructing a deep Q-network model, the method utilizes the powerful representation capability of deep learning to handle complex geomagnetic sensing data. Meanwhile, an action selection strategy combining heuristic and greedy search is introduced to balance exploration and exploitation and enhance the autonomous navigation capability of underwater vehicles in unknown environments. The strategy dynamically adjusts the exploration probability based on the distance to the target, ensuring effective exploration at an early stage and efficient utilization of the learned knowledge when approaching the target. Moreover, the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle explores the environment using local geomagnetic data and trains a regression model to predict the global geomagnetic map. Simulation results show that the method is significantly effective in reducing path lengths, improving exploration efficiency, and enhancing geomagnetic map accuracy. The results show that the method significantly improves the robot's navigation performance in unknown environments and provides a new way to construct geomagnetic maps.

Abstract:Abstract Background Different theories suggest birds may use compass or map navigational systems associated with Earth’s magnetic intensity or inclination, especially during migratory flights. These theories have only been tested by considering properties of the Earth’s magnetic field at coarse temporal scales, typically ignoring the temporal dynamics of geomagnetic values that may affect migratory navigational capacity. Methods We designed a simulation experiment to study if and how birds use the geomagnetic field during migration by using both high resolution GPS tracking data and geomagnetic data at relatively fine spatial and temporal resolutions in comparison to previous studies. Our simulations use correlated random walks (CRW) and correlated random bridge (CRB) models to model different navigational strategies based on underlying dynamic geomagnetic data. We translated navigational strategies associated with geomagnetic cues into probability surfaces that are included in the random walk models. Simulated trajectories from these models were compared to the actual GPS trajectories of migratory birds using 3 different similarity measurements to evaluate which of the strategies was most likely to have occurred. Results and conclusion We designed a simulation experiment which can be applied to different wildlife species under varying conditions worldwide. In the case of our example species, we found that a compass-type strategy based on taxis, defined as movement towards an extreme value, produced the closest and most similar trajectories when compared to original GPS tracking data in CRW models. Our results indicate less evidence for map navigation (constant heading and bi-gradient taxis navigation). Additionally, our results indicate a multifactorial navigational mechanism necessitating more than one cue for successful navigation to the target. This is apparent from our simulations because the modelled endpoints of the trajectories of the CRW models do not reach close proximity to the target location of the GPS trajectory when simulated with geomagnetic navigational strategies alone. Additionally, the magnitude of the effect of the geomagnetic cues during navigation in our models was low in our CRB models. More research on the scale effects of the geomagnetic field on navigation, along with temporally varying geomagnetic data could be useful for further improving future models.

Abstract:For geomagnetic navigation technology, taking inspiration from nature and leveraging the principle of animals' utilization of the geomagnetic field for long-distance navigation, and employing biomimetic technology to develop higher-precision geomagnetic sensors and more advanced navigation strategies, has emerged as a new trend. Based on the two widely acknowledged biological magnetic induction mechanisms, we have designed a bioinspired weak magnetic vector (BWMV) sensor and integrated it with neural networks to achieve geomagnetic matching navigation. In this paper, we assess the performance of the BWMV sensor through finite element model simulation. The result validates its high measurement accuracy and outstanding adaptability to installation errors with the assistance of specially trained neural networks. Furthermore, we have enhanced the bioinspired geomagnetic navigation algorithm and proposed a more advanced search strategy to adapt to navigation under the condition of no prior geomagnetic map. A simulated geomagnetic navigation platform was constructed based on the finite element model to simulate the navigation of the BWMV sensor in geomagnetic environments. The simulated navigation experiment verified that the proposed search strategy applied to the BWMV sensor can achieve high-precision navigation. This study proposes a novel approach for the research of bioinspired geomagnetic navigation technology, which holds great development prospects.

A mechanism of compass-free migratory navigation

Abstract:How migratory birds can find the right way when navigating over thousands of miles is an intriguing question that has greatly interested researchers in both the fields of biology and physics for centuries. There are several putative proposals that sound intuitively plausible; all remain contested so far because these hypothetical models of magnetoreceptors that sense the geomagnetic field need either extremely high sensitivity or humankind-like intelligence to guide. Here we explore theoretically whether birds can navigate to their destination through an entirely new scenario to sense the geomagnetic field. Our proposal is based on separate peaks of the resonance-fluorescence spectrum of a four-level system derived from the ferric sulfide cluster that exists in a MagR/Cry protein complex (Drosophila CG8198) of migratory birds. As the separation of spectral peaks contains information about the geomagnetic field at both the current location and the birthland, the change of such separation cues the bird to choose the right direction to move, and double-resonance emerges once it has arrived at its destination. Our theoretical mechanism can explain previous experiments on the disorientation of migratorybirds caused by oscillating magnetic field naturally and more precisely. This work provides insight into explaining migratory navigation and motivates possible humanmade practical devices.
A Geomagnetic Navigation Algorithm for Miniature Unmanned Helicopter

Abstract:A geomagnetic navigation algorithm for miniature unmanned helicopter is presented.On the basis of the analysis of strapdown magnetometer output model,an ellipsoid hypothesis correction algorithm is introduced to compensate the zero bias and scale factor error based on recursive least square.The corrected geomagnetic measurements are then fused with the measurements of strapdown gyros using complementary filter.The yaw angle is finally calculated from the tilt compensated geomagnetic measurements.The experiment results show that the static yaw angle estimation error derived from the proposed algorithm is less than 1.5°,and in the autonomous hovering,trajectory tracking and landing flight modals of miniature autonomous helicopter,the algorithm can well realize the yaw angle control and the decoupling of longitudinal and lateral velocity.Thus,the proposed geomagnetic navigation algorithm can meet the requirements of miniature autonomous helicopter.

Abstract:A geomagnetic field is a vector field in which the strength and direction are related to geographical location. Geomagnetic navigation technology, which uses collected geomagnetic field information to achieve positioning and navigation, has the advantages of reliability, stability, accuracy, and concealment. With the deepening research on geomagnetic navigation, bioinspired geomagnetic navigation technology has also been developed, which mainly studies and imitates the magnetic sensing mechanism and navigation behavior of animals, providing new research ideas for geomagnetic navigation technology. The magnetic particle hypothesis and free radical pair hypothesis are two mainstream mechanisms of biological sensing using the geomagnetic field, and studies have shown that these two mechanisms may be coupled within organisms. In this study, we propose a bioinspired weak magnetic vector (BWMV) sensor based on the joint sensing mechanism of magnetic particles and free radicals. It consists of a magnetic rod made of soft magnetic material and a tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) sensor array. A magnetic rod was used to simulate magnetic particles to convert magnetic field angle information into magnetic field intensity distribution information, and the TMR sensor array was used to simulate the perception of the magnetic field distribution by free radicals. In addition, artificial neural networks (ANNs) were used for BWMV sensors to obtain the mapping relationship between the magnetic field distribution and parameters, which can be used for geomagnetic navigation. To verify the navigation effect of the BWMV sensor in the laboratory, a simulated geomagnetic navigation device was built, and the high-precision mapping relationship from geomagnetic parameters to latitude and longitude information of the selected navigation area was obtained through another ANN. Finally, the effectiveness of the BWMV sensor based on ANNs for geomagnetic navigation is verified using simulated navigation experiments.

Global Uncertainty-Aware Planning for Magnetic Anomaly-Based Navigation

Abstract:Navigating and localizing in partially observable, stochastic environments with magnetic anomalies presents significant challenges, especially when balancing the accuracy of state estimation and the stability of localization. Traditional approaches often struggle to maintain performance due to limited localization updates and dynamic conditions. This paper introduces a multi-objective global path planner for magnetic anomaly navigation (MagNav), which leverages entropy maps to assess spatial frequency variations in magnetic fields and identify high-information areas. The system generates paths toward these regions by employing a potential field planner, enhancing active localization. Hardware experiments demonstrate that the proposed method significantly improves localization stability and accuracy compared to existing active localization techniques. The results underscore the effectiveness of this method in reducing localization uncertainty and highlight its adaptability to various gradient-based navigation maps, including topographical and underwater depth-based environments.

Abstract:Navigation and positioning technologies play a key role in modern human activities. Currently, navigation devices are mostly dependent on the global navigation satellite systems, for example, the global positioning system (GPS). However, it is known that GPS signals can be jammed or spoofed or otherwise fail. As the need for GPS independent navigation increases in some practical application scenarios, novel navigation techniques based on the geomagnetic field have been developed. A main task of geomagnetic navigation is to obtain the amplitude and direction of the geomagnetic field accurately. Here, we introduce an alternative scheme for vectorial measurements of the local geomagnetic field for magnetic positioning based on the biological ferric sulfide cluster, which exists in the magnetoreceptor protein/cryptochrome complex in certain avian species. We find that by observing the number of peaks and the proportional rate of spectrum on resonance, both the direction and intensity of the magnetic field can be determined. Therefore, our findings may provide a fresh insight into magnetic field measurement and also suggest further guidelines for the design and operation of satellite-free navigation systems based on the electrically tunable inorganic biological molecules.
A Bionic Data-driven Approach for Long-distance Underwater Navigation with Anomaly Resistance

Abstract:Various animals exhibit accurate navigation using environment cues. The Earth's magnetic field has been proved a reliable information source in long-distance fauna migration. Inspired by animal navigation, this work proposes a bionic and data-driven approach for long-distance underwater navigation. The proposed approach uses measured geomagnetic data for the navigation, and requires no GPS systems or geographical maps. Particularly, we construct and train a Temporal Attention-based Long Short-Term Memory (TA-LSTM) network to predict the heading angle during the navigation. To mitigate the impact of geomagnetic anomalies, we develop the mechanism to detect and quantify the anomalies based on Maximum Likelihood Estimation. We integrate the developed mechanism with the TA-LSTM, and calibrate the predicted heading angles to gain resistance against geomagnetic anomalies. Using the retrieved data from the WMM model, we conduct numerical simulations with diversified navigation conditions to test our approach. The simulation results demonstrate a resilience navigation against geomagnetic anomalies by our approach, along with precision and stability of the underwater navigation in single and multiple destination missions.

Abstract:Precise geomagnetic navigation of aircraft without GPS can be challenging. However, the low accuracy of traditional magnetic data and the limitations of the existing geomagnetic matching algorithms affect its implementation. We propose a set of strategies to address these issues. First, we designed a towed airborne three-axis magnetic gradient device for measurements, which effectively reduced the influence of geomagnetic diurnal variation, geomagnetic storms, and aircraft interference. Second, we introduced a least-squares correction algorithm to enhance the accuracy of the magnetic data by reducing the heading error resulting from the magnetometer sensor. The algorithm improved the internal coincidence total accuracy (ICTA) from 0.6529 to 0.0186 nT, a remarkable 35-fold increase. Finally, we established a geomagnetic matching navigation algorithm called aeromagnetic gradient iterative closest contour point (AGICCP) for a three-axis gradient field, which corrected the cumulative error of the inertial navigation system (INS) in long-distance navigation. Our simulation experiments demonstrated that AGICCP outperforms the traditional ICCP and vector ICCP (VICCP) algorithms, reducing the position error from 736.96 and 174.70 m, respectively, to 26.73 m. The suggested magnetic gradient device and the proposed algorithms significantly improve the accuracy of geomagnetic navigation. This study provides new insights into precise airborne navigation with great practical significance.

Abstract:In the past years, significant progresses have been achieved in signpost-based indoor navigation and positioning systems. In this paper, inspired by recent bionic researches on long-distance animal geomagnetic navigation, we propose an autonomous local navigation and positioning system, based on an artificially established magnetic gradient for in-grid or desktop applications. Without using any magnetic-field strength information, the proposed navigation and positioning can be accomplished by matching a spatial angle included by the direction of the vector magnetic field and a direction defined in the navigation plane using an algorithm derived based on the Kalman filter. Simulations and experiments verified the effectiveness of the proposed approach. This method can be used to improve the positioning precision of signpost-based systems. It can also be used in new applications of autonomous in-grid or desktop navigation and positioning for automatic robot arms.

Real-time Uncertainty-Aware Motion Planning for Magnetic-based Navigation

Abstract:Localization in GPS-denied environments is critical for autonomous systems, and traditional methods like SLAM have limitations in generalizability across diverse environments. Magnetic-based navigation (MagNav) offers a robust solution by leveraging the ubiquity and unique anomalies of external magnetic fields. This paper proposes a real-time uncertainty-aware motion planning algorithm for MagNav, using onboard magnetometers and information-driven methodologies to adjust trajectories based on real-time localization confidence. This approach balances the trade-off between finding the shortest or most energy-efficient routes and reducing localization uncertainty, enhancing navigational accuracy and reliability. The novel algorithm integrates an uncertainty-driven framework with magnetic-based localization, creating a real-time adaptive system capable of minimizing localization errors in complex environments. Extensive simulations and real-world experiments validate the method, demonstrating significant reductions in localization uncertainty and the feasibility of real-time implementation. The paper also details the mathematical modeling of uncertainty, the algorithmic foundation of the planning approach, and the practical implications of using magnetic fields for localization. Future work includes incorporating a global path planner to address the local nature of the current guidance law, further enhancing the method's suitability for long-duration operations.

Abstract:This paper proposes an optimal control-based method named the rapid-Gauss pseudospectral method (RGPM) to obtain a smooth time-optimal path for unmanned surface vehicles (USVs). It is a general global path planning method, improving the Gauss pseudospectral method (GPM) which cannot be applied to complex ocean scenarios. In addition, we optimize the representation of obstacles and add a Maklink algorithm to reduce the computaitonal cost. More specifically, a unified obstacle modeling approach is first introduced, then a continuous-time-optimal-control path planning problem considering USV kinematics is formulated. The orthogonal collocation method is used to discretize the continuous-time-optimal control problem into a nonlinear programming (NLP) problem. Furthermore, we introduce a mesh refinement technique to achieve collision avoidance between adjacent discrete points. To enhance computational efficiency, an initialization and iteration approach is further proposed. Herein, a MAKLINK graph is established to obtain a suboptimal path as the initial guess for the NLP problem. Obstacle-avoidance constraints are iteratively updated according to whether or not there are collisions in the current path. The proposed method was compared with the traditional GPM under two different scenarios. The simulation results show that the proposed method is superior to the traditional GPM in terms of path quality and convergence speed and can obtain quasi-time-optimal paths under complex conditions simultaneously.

Abstract:Abstract Summarizes the technical principles of geomagnetic matching navigation, expounds the navigation solution process of MAGCOM, SITAN and ICCP three main matching navigation algorithms, and discusses the application status of geomagnetic navigation technology from the three geographical environments of satellite, air and underwater. It points out the research prospects of geomagnetic matching navigation and provides reference for the research and development of geomagnetic navigation technology.

Abstract:How migratory birds can find the right way in navigating over thousand miles is an intriguing question, which much interested researchers in both fields of biology and physics for centuries. There several putative proposals that sound intuitively plausible all remain contested so far because those hypothesis-models of magnetoreceptor to sense geomagnetic field need either extremely high sensitivity or humankind-like intelligence to guide. Here we explore theoretically that the birds can navigate to their destination through an entirely new scenario to sense the geomagnetic field. Our proposal is based on separate peaks of the resonance-fluorescence spectrum of a four-level system derived from the ferric sulfide cluster which exists in a protein complex (Drosophila CG8198) of migratory birds. As the separation of spectral peaks contains information about geomagnetic field at both current location and birthland, the change of such separation cues the bird to choose a right direction to move and double-resonance emerges once arrived the destination. Our theoretical mechanism can explain previous experiments on the disorientation of migratory birds caused by oscillating magnetic field naturally and more precisely. This work provides insight to explain migratory navigation and motivates possible manmade practical devices.
