Abstract:This paper presents the construction of a Chinese word sense-tagged corpus. The resulting lexical resource includes mainly three components: 1) a corpus annotated with word senses; 2) a lexicon containing sense distinction and description in the feature-based formalism; 3) the linking between the sense entries in the lexicon and CCD synsets. A dynamic model is put forward to build the three knowledge bases simultaneously and interactively. The strategy to improve consistency is addressed since consistency is a thorny issue for constructing semantic resources. The inter-annotator agreement of the sense-tagged corpus is satisfied. The database will grow up to be a powerful lexical resource both for linguistic researches on Chinese lexical semantics and word sense disambiguation.
On Construction of a Chinese Corpus Bused on Semantic Dependency Relations

Abstract:Corpora are important resources for knowledge acquisition in the field of natural language processing.For the purpose of sentence understanding,we are constructing a Chinese large-scale-corpus based on semantic dependency relations.This paper introduces the tagging formalisms we adopt,the tagging set we choose,the tagging tool we develop,and the method we use to guarantee the good consistency of tagging.The corpus under discussion is at a scale of 1 million words.Each sentence in the corpus,which already had annotations of sense,is further tagged with its semantic structure using 70 semantic-dependency-relations.The highlight of this corpus is its ability to effectively describe various relations between Chinese words.All of these profited from using HowNet for reference and the combination with specific use of language.The construction of this corpus can definitely provide more knowledge supports for sentence understanding,content-based information retrieval,and so on.

Abstract:Information technology, especially search engine technology popular on the Internet, offers promising opportunities for future research into Chinese Lexical Semantics. This paper demonstrates the significance and the urgent need for lexical semantics in natural language processing. Chinese lexical resources developed by the Institute of Computational Linguistics of Peking University (ICL/PKU) is introduced in this paper, which contains mainly four components: (1) Grammatical Knowledge Base of Contemporary Chinese (GKB), (2) Chinese Semantic Dictionary (CSD), (3) Chinese Concept Dictionary (CCD), and (4) Word-Sense Tagging Corpus of Contemporary Chinese (CSC). Building a comprehensive language knowledge base by combining all existing language resources is proposed in the last section; main ideas, technological measures, progress to date are outlined.

Abstract:Bei sentences in Mandarin Chinese with SOV word order have attracted extensive interest. However, their semantic features lacked quantitative evidence and their cognitive features received insufficient attention. Therefore, the current study aims to quantitatively investigate the semantic and cognitive features through the analysis of nine annotated factors in a corpus. The results regarding bei sentences show that (i) subjects exhibit a tendency to be definite and animate; non-adversative verbs have gained popularity over time, and intransitive verbs are capable of taking objects; (ii) subject relations tend to be long, implying heavy cognitive load, whereas the dependencies governed by subjects are often short, suggesting light cognitive load; and (iii) certain semantic factors significantly impact cognitive factors; for instance, animate subjects tend to govern shorter dependencies. Overall, our study provides empirical support for the semantic features of bei sentences and reveals their cognitive features using dependency distance.

Abstract:Semantic lexicon and semantic framework are the primary support of natural language processing tasks such as information extraction, sentiment analysis, and machine translation. Therefore, it is essential to construct the contemporary Chinese common verbs' semantic framework dictionary that covers rich semantic knowledge. Based on an analysis of current research results, this paper defines the lexical framework of common Chinese verbs. According to the predicate thematic roles, the semantic framework is divided into the basic semantic framework and extended semantic framework. Frameworks which are automatically extracted, taking semantics as the processing unit, and summarized based on large-scale lexical and thematic roles labeling corpus. The complete and simplified versions of the verb framework is constructed with the help of manual proofreading. The final verb framework contains a detailed description and corresponding example sentences of 2,782 common verbs with 4,516 meanings.

Abstract:At present most of corpora are annotated mainly with syntactic knowledge. In this paper, we attempt to build a large corpus and annotate semantic knowledge with dependency grammar. We believe that words are the basic units of semantics, and the structure and meaning of a sentence consist mainly of a series of semantic dependencies between individual words. A 1,000,000-word-scale corpus annotated with semantic dependency has been built. Compared with syntactic knowledge, semantic knowledge is more difficult to annotate, for ambiguity problem is more serious. In the paper, the strategy to improve consistency is addressed, and congruence is defined to measure the consistency of tagged corpus.. Finally, we will compare our corpus with other well-known corpora.

Abstract:In recent years, great progress has been made in Chinese corpus processing. A fifty-million-word Chinese National Corpus project has been put into effect, and many automatic corpus processing programs have also been developed. In this paper, we will briefly introduce our work on constructing a large scale annotated corpus for Chinese grammatical research and developing a Chinese Corpus Multilevel Processing system—CCMP. First, we present our annotation scheme. Second, we discuss some basic methodologies for Chinese corpus analysis and propose a man-machine mutually dependent corpus processing model. Finally, we introduce the survey of our CCMP. We hope our work will give impetus to further research in Chinese corpus linguistics.

Abstract:Recently, much Chinese text error correction work has focused on Chinese Spelling Check (CSC) and Chinese Grammatical Error Diagnosis (CGED). In contrast, little attention has been paid to the complicated problem of Chinese Semantic Error Diagnosis (CSED), which lacks relevant datasets. The study of semantic errors is important because they are very common and may lead to syntactic irregularities or even problems of comprehension. To investigate this, we build the CSED corpus, which includes two datasets. The one is for the CSED-Recognition (CSED-R) task. The other is for the CSED-Correction (CSED-C) task. Our annotation guarantees high-quality data through quality assurance mechanisms. Our experiments show that powerful pre-trained models perform poorly on this corpus. We also find that the CSED task is challenging, as evidenced by the fact that even humans receive a low score. This paper proposes syntax-aware models to specifically adapt to the CSED task. The experimental results show that the introduction of the syntax-aware approach is meaningful.

Abstract:The Semantic Knowledge-base of Contemporary Chinese (SKCC) is a large scale Chinese semantic resource developed by the Institute of Computational Linguistics of Peking University. It provides a large amount of semantic information such as semantic hierarchy and collocation features for 66,539 Chinese words and their English counterparts. Its POS and semantic classification represent the latest progress in Chinese linguistics and language engineering. The descriptions of semantic attributes are fairly thorough, comprehensive and authoritative. The paper introduces the outline of SKCC, and indicates that it is effective for word sense disambiguation in MT applications and is likely to be important for general Chinese language processing.

Abstract:Universal Semantic Tagging aims to provide lightweight unified analysis for all languages at the word level. Though the proposed annotation scheme is conceptually promising, the feasibility is only examined in four Indo- European languages. This paper is concerned with extending the annotation scheme to handle Mandarin Chinese and empirically study the plausibility of unifying meaning representations for multiple languages. We discuss a set of language-specific semantic phenomena, propose new annotation specifications and build a richly annotated corpus. The corpus consists of 1100 English-Chinese parallel sentences, where compositional semantic analysis is available for English, and another 1000 Chinese sentences which has enriched syntactic analysis. By means of the new annotations, we also evaluate a series of neural tagging models to gauge how successful semantic tagging can be: accuracies of 92.7% and 94.6% are obtained for Chinese and English respectively. The English tagging performance is remarkably better than the state-ofthe-art by 7.7%.

Abstract:Addressing the complex language understanding challenges in task-oriented dialogues, we propose a multiconcept semantic representation system specifically designed for Chinese intent recognition, aimed at providing a unified solution to the difficulties encountered in intent recognition. We describe the Chinese multi-concept semantic representation system and detail the initial construction of a Chinese multi-concept semantic annotation corpus, using both the Housing Fund intent dataset and the query classification dataset. This corpus was subject to a statistical analysis of its annotations. The ultimate goal of this research is to establish a cross-domain, transferable multi-concept semantic representation system tailored for Chinese intent recognition. Additionally, this paper aims to develop a corpus and knowledge base for training multi-concept semantic annotation models across multiple domain scenarios, thereby providing a theoretical and data-driven foundation for language understanding focused on Chinese intent recognition.

Abstract:This paper proposes incorporating linguistic semantic information into discourse relation recognition and constructing a Semantic Augmented Chinese Discourse Corpus (SACA) comprising 9546 adversative complex sentences. In adversative complex sentences, we suggest a quadruple (P, Q, R, Qβ) representing internal semantic elements, where the semantic opposition between Q and Qβ forms the basis of the adversative relationship. P denotes the premise, and R represents the adversative reason. The overall annotation approach of this corpus follows the Penn Discourse Treebank (PDTB), except for the classification of senses. We combined insights from the Chinese Discourse Treebank (CDTB) and obtained eight sense categories for Chinese adversative complex sentences. Based on this corpus, we explore the relationship between sense classification and internal semantic elements within our newly proposed Chinese Adversative Discourse Relation Recognition (CADRR) task. Leveraging deep learning techniques, we constructed various classification models and the model that utilizes internal semantic element features, demonstrating their effectiveness and the applicability of our SACA corpus. Compared with pre-trained models, our model incorporates internal semantic element information to achieve state-of-the-art performance.

Abstract:This paper describes the constructing of a large-scale (above 500,000 pair sentences) Chinese-English parallel corpus. The current status of Chinese corpora is overviewed with the emphasis on parallel corpus. The XML coding principles for Chinese--English parallel corpus are discussed. The sentence alignment algorithm used in this project is described with a computer-aided checking processing. Finally, we show the design of the concordance of the parallel corpus and the prospect to further development.
The Construction of a Semantic Network of Chinese Lexical Associations Based on Large-Scale Corpora

Abstract:This study proposes an approach for the automatic extraction of lexical associations in the Chinese language based on analyzing large-scale corpora. With the progressive pattern matching of the phrasal frames Y (like Y (so/as such) A) and A de xiang4 Y na4yang4 (A CSC * like Y so), a complex relational system of objects and predicates, which takes the form of a closed and infinite neural network, can be established for representing lexical associations. The meaning represented by each node in the network is defined by the arcs extending from it. The meaning of the lexeme on the node is the holistic combination of all meanings represented by its immediate neighbors, i.e. all of its lexical associations. Meaning analyzed as such is based on real-world language use, while meaning combinations in a binary tree in the traditional semantic componential analysis result from a priori considerations and could be arbitrary. This study tries to construct an authentic, objective and tractable multi-dimensional model for lexical associations in the Chinese language. CSC: Complex Stative Construction

Abstract:The research of sentence constructions in Modern Chinese is the ultimate goal of the Modern Chinese grammar study. In past, many grammar researchers named and classified different sentence constructions by various perspectives such as syntactical meaning, semantical meaning, pragmatical expressions, tone and fixed words. However, we think that it just does some generalization and synthesization of sentence constructions from one angle or one side. Based on the research of the formers, this paper describes four form features belonged to the sentence constructions and puts forward that there is mutually conditioned interaction force between the sentence construction and its sentence structural compositions; Meanwhile, the paper brings forward that the realization of sentence constructions’meanings have to go through the process of mutual integration between the semantical roles of sentence constructions and the verb argument components in sentences. In this integration process, the verb argument components will appear merged, cut, shade, contributed and so on. At last, combined with the Ambiguous Sentences in Modern Chinese, this paper describes briefly that the realization mechanism of sentence constructions’ meanings results from the fact that typical sentence constructions founded on diverse modules mutually connect,lap and then form sentence constructions with more rich meanings.

A set of software tools is designed to help human annotator to accelerate the annotation speed and keep the consistency. The software tools include 1) a tagger for word segmentation and POS tagging, 2) an annotating interface responsible for the sense describing in the lexicon and sense annotating in the corpus, 3) a checker for consistency keeping, 4) a transformer responsible for the transforming from text file to XML format, and 5) a counter for sense frequency distribution calculating.

Abstract:Adpositions are frequent markers of semantic relations, but they are highly ambiguous and vary significantly from language to language. Moreover, there is a dearth of annotated corpora for investigating the cross-linguistic variation of adposition semantics, or for building multilingual disambiguation systems. This paper presents a corpus in which all adpositions have been semantically annotated in Mandarin Chinese; to the best of our knowledge, this is the first Chinese corpus to be broadly annotated with adposition semantics. Our approach adapts a framework that defined a general set of supersenses according to ostensibly language-independent semantic criteria, though its development focused primarily on English prepositions (Schneider et al., 2018). We find that the supersense categories are well-suited to Chinese adpositions despite syntactic differences from English. On a Mandarin translation of The Little Prince, we achieve high inter-annotator agreement and analyze semantic correspondences of adposition tokens in bitext.

Abstract:In this paper, the author firstly gives a brief overview of the history of developing Chinese corpora in mainland of China, especially focusing on some representative research projects in the last decade, such as the General Contermporary Chinese Corpus that is sponsored by the State Language Commission of China National Ministry of Education, and the Chinese Corpus of Situated Discourse in Beijing Area that is built up by China Academy of Social Science, and so on. And then the related works in this field made by Peking University on designing, annotating and using of corpus are elaborated. There are four parts are discussed in detail, including (1) a very large scale of wide time-span Chinese corpus using for linguistic research with an on-line KWIC concordance based on Web-Lucene search engine, (2) People Daily corpus which is processed with word segmentation and part-of-speech tagging, (3) a Chinese Treebank. Based on the Treebank, Chinese phrasal constructing rules can be extracted automatically, and the distribution of all kinds of phrases can be described through statistical approach. (4) a Chinese-English parallel corpus based on which a workbench prototype has been built to support Chinese-English lexicography. In the latter part of this paper, the author discusses briefly some issues, which have received more attention in this field recently, including the standardization of Chinese corpora encoding and the approaches to share large-scale Chinese corpora for researches and public use.
