Abstract:The Ba even-parity J = 2 spectrum has been studied by using an autoionization approach. Energy levels of the Ba 6snd D-1,3(2) Rydberg states have been measured and interpreted by the multichannel quantum defect theory. The results are in good agreement with the previous studies.

Abstract:Using a three-step laser excitation scheme we have selectively excited the Ba 6p(3/2)ns(J = 1, 2) autoionizing Rydberg states with different polarization configurations. The level energies and widths of Ba 6p(3/2)ns(J = 1) autoionizing states with n = 9-33 and 6p(3/2)ns(J = 2) autoionizing states with n = 9-20 are reported, most of which were observed for the first time. Their spectroscopic properties are discussed in detail. The experimental data are in good agreement with the theoretical analysis from the multichannel quantum defect theory.

Abstract:With different polarization configurations the spectroscopic properties of Ba 6p1/2ns (J=0) and 6p1/2ns (J=1) autoionizing states have been studied systematically by using an isolated core excitation scheme. Level energies and widths of n members for the J=1 series with n=9–33 and for the J=0 series with n=9–10,12–20 are reported, most of which are observed for the first time. Further information about these two autoionizing series, such as energies of the higher n members and their interseries interactions with 6p3/2nl series, are obtained by means of saturation excitation method. The experimental data on the J=1 series are analyzed with a 13-channel multichannel quantum defect theory, and general agreement between them has been obtained. Several parts of the experimental results are compared with those of previous works, and agree well with them.

Abstract:Ba 6p3/2 nd (J = 1, 3) autoionizing states, especially those with lower principal quantum numbers, have been experimentally studied using the isolated core excitation scheme with three dye lasers. Level energies and widths of 6p1/2 nd and 6p3/2 nd (J = 1, 3) autoionizing states, which are excited from 6s nd 1D2 Rydberg states with n = 7-15 and 6s nd 3D2 Rydberg states with n = 7-12, are reported. Examination of autoionizing states with lower principal quantum number (n = 7-9) exhibited the admixture between states converging to 6p3/2 and 6p1/2 ionization threshold. Moreover, some discussion is made based on comparison between different autoionizing series, so that one may explain the complex spectral structures of these states.

Abstract:In the study of Yb atomic Rydberg states, new members of 6sns 1S0 series for n=23, 24, 66-116 and 6snd 1D2 series for n=81-114 were observed. The data are in excellent agreement with the MQDT analysing results. The autoionizing Rydberg series 6p12 /n's ( 1/2 , 1/2 )10 were investigated by three-step laser excitation. The ICE model was used to explain the experimental spectrum, and it has been proved to be suitable for describing the excitation of the autoionizing Rydberg states with a weakly-excited core.

Abstract:The excitation spectra and branching ratios of ejected electrons of the Ba 6pns(J = 1) autoionizing states are measured usingmultistep laser excitation scheme and time-of-flight electron spectroscopy. The energy dependence of branching ratios of the Ba+ 6s state on energy is determined for the low-lying 6p(1/2,3/2)ns states, and compared with it previous R-matrix calculation.

Abstract:Three dye lasers are used to excited Ba atoms to obtain ions and electrons through autoionization process.The wavelength of the second laser is scanned when those of the first and third lasers are fixed,through which spectra of Ba 6sns Rydberg series are measured.The wavelength of the third laser is scanned when those of the first and second lasers are fixed,through which spectra of Ba 6pns autoionization series are measured.Experimental spectra are described and analyzed by multichannel quantum defect theory.The Ba Rydberg state and 6pns(n=8～10) have been discussed in this paper.Agreement between the theory and experiment is achieved.

Abstract:The rovibrational energy-level structures of BaH and BaD in their X ~ electronic ground state have been characterised by pulsed-field-ionisation zero-kinetic-energy photoelectron spectroscopy following resonance-enhanced ( ) two-photon excitation from the BaH/BaD X~ ground state via the E~ intermediate levels. A full set of rovibrational molecular constants for the BaH and BaD ground states have been derived for the first time and the adiabatic ionisation energies of BaH and BaD were determined to be 38679.96(20) and 38652.69(20)~cm , respectively. Photoelectron spectra recorded via E-state levels of selected rovibronic parity exhibit pronounced intensity alternations of transitions to rotational states of the cations with even- and odd-valued rotational-angular-momentum quantum number . This observation is interpreted by invoking dominant contributions of even- photoelectron partial waves in the photoionisation of the E~ intermediate states of barium hydride. The lowest pure-rotational transition frequencies of BaH and BaD are derived from the photoelectron spectra which may help the detection of BaH in the microwave and millimetre-wave ranges.

Abstract:The neutron-rich barium nuclei have been the subject of intense interest due to the enhanced octupole correlations they are predicted to exhibit. The observation of enhanced octupole collectivity in Ba-144,Ba-146 as measured in sub-barrier Coulomb excitation, consistent with static octupole deformation, has further heightened this interest. In the present work, these studies are extended to the neighboring odd-mass Ba-143 to investigate the interplay between single-particle and collective octupole degrees of freedom. A new measurement of the first 9(-)/2-state lifetime is also presented. Reflection-Asymmetric Triaxial Particle Rotor Model calculations indicate that the negative-parity bands in Ba-143 can be understood as a decoupled structure of nu h(9/2) parentage, while the positive-parity bands are built on a decoupled octupole phonon. No evidence for E3 excitation is observed in this work, but an upper limit is placed on the E3 matrix element to the lowest octupole band.

Abstract:We report a set-up for cavity ringdown absorption spectroscopy, and we have measured the line profile of the resonance 6s6p1P1←6s6s1S0 of barium atoms using cavity ringdown spectroscopy method. The absorption spectroscopy line profile of Ba at different temperatures near 553.548nm is gained. The experimental results indicate that the precision for the absorption measurement has reached up to 6×10-7.

Abstract:The potential energy surfaces of even-even $^{142-156}$Ba are investigated in the constrained reflection-asymmetric relativistic mean-field approach with parameter set PK1. It is shown that for the ground states, $^{142}$Ba is near spherical,$^{156}$Ba well quadrupole-deformed, and in between $^{144-154}$Ba octupole deformed. In particular, the nuclei $^{148,150}$Ba with $N=92,94$ have the largest octupole deformations. By including the octupole degree of freedom, energy gaps $N=88$, $N=94$ and $Z=56$ near Fermi surfaces for the single-particle levels in $^{148}$Ba with $\beta_2\sim 0.26$ and $\beta_3\sim 0.17$ are found. Furthermore, the performance of the octupole deformation driving pairs ($\nu 2f_{7/2}$, $\nu 1i_{13/2}$) and ($\pi 2d_{5/2}$, $\pi 1h_{11/2}$) is demonstrated by analyzing the single-particle levels near Fermi surfaces in $^{148}$Ba.

Abstract:The asymmetry parameters of Ba 6pjns (j=1/2, 3/2 J=1) autoionizing states, which characterizes the angular distribution with the form (σ/4π)[1+βP2(cos θ)], have been investigated, using multichannel quantum defect theory, combined with R-matrix method. Furthermore, energy dependence of asymmetry parameters of electrons ejected from Ba 6pjns autoionizing states to the 6s1/2, 5d3/2, 5d5/2, and 6p1/2 ion states has been studied. The results indicate the 6p1/2ns and 6p3/2ns series have different characteristics in their angular distributions of ejected electrons. Our theoretical results not only agree well with the previous experimental ones, but also predict some new phenomena.

Abstract:We report an experimental investigation on the Doppler-free saturated absorption spectroscopy of buffer-gas-cooled Barium monofluoride（BaF）molecules in a 4 K cryogenic cell.The obtained spectra with a resolution of19 MHz,much smaller than previously observed in absorption spectroscopy,clearly resolve the hyperfine transitions.Moreover,we use these high-resolution spectra to fit the hyperfine splittings of excited A（v=0）state and find the hyperfine splitting of the laser-cooling-relevant A 2 Π 1/2 （v=0,J=1/2,+） state is about 18 MHz,much higher than the previous theoretically predicted value.This provides important missing information for laser cooling of BaF molecules.

Abstract:In this paper we study the structure of even-even Ba isotopes with neutron number N=84–90 within the framework of nucleon-pair approximation of the shell model. We use a phenomenological Hamiltonian, which includes single-particle energies, monopole, quadrupole, and octupole pairing energies, as well as quadrupole-quadrupole and octupole-octupole interactions. Our calculated energy levels and B(E2) values are in good agreement with experimental data. The alternating parity doublets are well reproduced by considering F− nucleon pairs with spin-three and negative parity, which demonstrates the importance of F− pair in octupole deformation. The octupole-octupole interaction is found to favor stronger B(E3) transitions and suppress B(E2) transitions in the low-lying states of nuclei in these even-even Ba isotopes. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevC.109.024322 ©2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:The reflection asymmetric shell model (RASM) has been applied to describe the alternating-parity rotational bands in neutron-rich Ba-142,Ba-144,Ba-146,Ba-148 octupole nuclei. The calculated rotational bands are in good agreement with the available experimental data. The parity splitting and the parity inversion axe also reproduced by the present calculation.

Abstract:igh spin states in neutron-rich odd-N {sup 145} Ba nucleus have been investigated from study of prompt {gamma}-rays in spontaneous fission of {sup 252} Cf. The alternating parity bands are identified indicating octupole deformation with simplex quantum number s=-i. The ground state band shows signature splitting and inversion at low spin. These collective band structures exhibit the competition and co-existence between symmetric and asymmetric shapes.

Abstract:The resonance and near-threshold structures of low-energy electron interaction with Sr and Ba atoms have been investigated by carrying out respectively 11-state and 21-state close-coupling calculations within the R-matrix scheme. Part of the core–valence correlation is included by exciting one core electron to the valence orbitals. Results for the low-energy electron scattering and the photodetachment of the negative ions are presented. For Sr, the results show that there is a 2D shape resonance around 0.8 eV above the elastic scattering threshold and a remarkable structure just above the first 3Po excitation threshold. For Ba, two 2D shape resonances are predicted, just above the elastic scattering threshold and the 3D excitation threshold, respectively.

Abstract:We apply a version of the recently developed approach combining the correlation potential, linearized singles-doubles coupled-cluster, and the configuration interaction methods to the spectra of the heavy alkaline earths barium, radium, and element 120. Quantum electrodynamics radiative corrections are included. We have found unprecedented agreement between ab initio theory and experiment for the spectra of barium and radium, and we make accurate predictions for missing and unreliable data for all three atoms.

Abstract:Three new negative-parity bands have been identified in 120Ba, two of them forming a strongly coupled band. The previously known negative-parity band is significantly extended to high spin, while the lower part of the yrare positive-parity band has been modified. From the analysis of the band properties and comparison with the neighboring nuclei a coherent description of all bands is achieved. In particular, a simple explanation of the evolution of the positive-parity bands at high spin is proposed, including the possible occupation of the ??f7/2[541]1/2??? intruder orbital. Cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations reveal similar quadrupole deformations but different triaxiality of the bands, while particle number conserving cranked shell model calculations qualitatively reproduce the experimental data and support the assigned configurations. The new measured ratios of reduced transition probabilities B(E1)/B(E2) complete the systematics in the 118???124Ba nuclei, exhibiting a decrease with decreasing neutron number, and are compared with the known values in the 116???120Xe nuclei, which are larger. Extended calculations with the quadrupole and octupole collective Hamiltonian based on the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov model employing the relativistic DD-PC1 density functional nicely reproduce the decreasing trend towards lower neutron numbers for Ba and Xe nuclei, as well as the larger values in Xe nuclei, but are much larger in amplitude than the experimental values. On the other hand, particle number conserving cranked shell model calculations without octupole deformation overestimate the low-spin values, while those with octupole deformation included reproduce the experimental values in 120Ba, suggesting the possible existence of moderate octupole collectivity in the negative-parity bands of nuclei in this mass region.

Abstract:A reflection-asymmetric triaxial particle rotor model with three quasiparticles and a reflection-asymmetric triaxial rotor is developed, and applied to investigate the observed multiple chiral doublets $(\mathrm{M}\ensuremath{\chi}\mathrm{D})$ candidates with octupole correlations in $^{131}\mathrm{Ba}$, i.e., two pairs of positive-parity bands D3-D4 and D5-D6, as well as one pair of negative-parity bands D7-D8. The energy spectra, the energy staggering parameters, the $B(M1)/B(E2)$ ratios, and the $B(E1)/B(E2)$ ratios are reproduced well. The chiral geometries for these $\mathrm{M}\ensuremath{\chi}\mathrm{D}$ candidates are examined by the azimuthal plots, and the evolution of chiral geometry with spin is clearly demonstrated. The intrinsic structure for the positive-parity bands is analyzed and the possible pseudospin-chiral quartet bands are suggested.
