Abstract:of Ch'an thought had made to the development of the Ch'an movement as a whole. Yanagida's thinking on this phase of Ch'an Buddhism has now been faithfully transmitted to the West by two outstanding students of his, John McRae and Bernard Faure. Neither, however, is a mere plagiarist or imitator of Yanagida's scholarship, in that they show themselves at the same time to be remarkably different from each other by relating their Japanese study experiences to the different intellectual traditions which earlier formed their distinctive scholarly styles. McRae lies firmly within the academic traditions of the Englishspeaking world: his agenda is set by Yampolsky's preface, which needs must be expanded so that the role of Northern Ch'an up to the time of Shen-hui and the retrospective creation by him of a master-figure, Hui-neng, is properly accounted for. As he is well aware, the materials at his disposal cannot simply be woven together into an historical account, since they are not histories in our sense. He has none the less striven for pedagogical reasons to present a simple and coherent end product, only warning at the very end of his narrative (p. 252) of the extent to which he has spared the reader a full confrontation with the complexities of the evidence. Though ideal solutions to the presentation of his sources have not always been found (important prolegomena to translated works are buried in mid-chapter footnotes) the general concern with clarity will be warmly welcomed by all who attempt to teach the history of Chinese religion in the English-speaking world; here at last is a volume which can be recommended to students in the confidence that it will lead them on from current banalities about Zen to a much better informed appreciation of how this type of religion came into being. It would be a shame if English-speaking students were unable to go on to read the work of Bernard Faure, since although it covers some of the same ground, his approach forms a most illuminating contrast to McRae's. Here the agenda is set by the existing knowledge in the French-speaking world of the writings of Shenhui. Faure is therefore far less concerned with the very early development of Ch'an—a topic on which he has in any case published elsewhere. Rather, his theme is an examination of the life and thought of Shen-hui's bete noire, Shen-hsiu (6067-706), and of the fate of the Northern School associated with his name—the latter a topic covered only in fairly summary fashion by McRae. Faure, by contrast, traces the ramifications of the school's influence to Tibet, Korea and Japan, showing an exhilarating breadth of scholarship reminiscent of such illustrious forerunners in the field as Paul Demieville. His bibliography, for that matter, testifies also to excursions beyond even the larger field of Buddhist studies into the Taoist canon also—this despite the fact that this portion of the work simply reproduces the doctoral dissertation on which the volume is based and does not do justice to the many new sources cited in the body of the text—thus demonstrating that on doctrinal matters also his research can be used to supplement that of McRae. These two monographs, then, constitute a major advance in Western scholarship on the emergence of Ch'an Buddhism, and prepare the way for further re-evaluation of its development through the eighth century and beyond: Shenhui is now an obvious target for reassessment, for example. But just as Shen-hui can only be properly understood in the light of the teaching and practice of others with whom he felt himself to be in competition, so too Ch'an Buddhism as a whole will one day have to be seen in the light of what was not Ch'an, as one component in Chinese Buddhist culture, or even in the very totality of Chinese medieval culture. That, of course, is a far larger task which will probably take a fair amount of time to accomplish. But I do think that we can be sure that when the time does come for a retrospective consideration of the history of Ch'an studies in Western languages, the publication of these two books by McRae and Faure will be seen as marking a very important step along the way.
