Abstract:The ionic liquid precursor tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (TBAH) is used to synthesize In(OH)3 particles. The ionic liquid TBAH is demonstrated to be effective for the synthesis of In(OH)3 nanorods with a controlled size. The effect of the indium salt and the added water amount on the final products is investigated. The synthesized In(OH)3 nanorods could be further transformed into porous In2O3 rod particles. Specifically, the gas sensing properties of the synthesized porous In2O3 rod particles to various organic compounds (methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, butanol, ethyl acetate and toluene) exhibit remarkable sensitivities, low detection limits and fast response–recovery times, which are superior to the reported In2O3 based sensors. The as-prepared porous In2O3 rod-based sensors thus demonstrate their potential applications in detecting chemical contaminants and dangerous gases.

Abstract:Graphene/graphene nanoribbons hybrid aerogel (GA/GNRs) was prepared via a hydrothermal process by using graphene oxide as precursor, and the graphene oxide nanoribbons unzipped from multi-walled carbon nanotubes were compound together. Various techniques were used to investigate the morphology, surface properties and structure of aerogel samples. Besides, the adsorption properties of the hybrid aerogel for the removal of U(VI) were further studied. The results showed that GNRs was grafted on the surface of graphene, and the specific surface area and porous pores structure were enhanced. The adsorption process of hybrid aerogel for U(VI) was pH-dependent, rapid, spontaneous and endothermic, and the maximum adsorption capacity for U(VI) was calculated to be 327.8 mg/g, which is expected to separate uranium from wastewater.
Sol-gel transition effect based on konjac glucomannan thermosensitive hydrogel for photo-assisted uranium extraction

Abstract:Exploiting the intelligent photocatalysts capable of phase separation provides a promising solution to the removal of uranium, which is expected to solve the difficulty in separation and the poor selectivity of traditional photocatalysts in carbonate-containing uranium wastewater. In this paper, the γ-FeOOH/konjac glucomannan grafted with phenolic hydroxyl groups/poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (γ-FeOOH/KGM(Ga)/PNIPAM) thermosensitive hydrogel is proposed as the photocatalysts for extracting uranium from carbonate-containing uranium wastewater. The dynamic phase transformation is demonstrated to confirm the arbitrary transition of γ-FeOOH/KGM(Ga)/PNIPAM thermosensitive hydrogel from a dispersed state with a high specific surface area at low temperatures to a stable aggregated state at high temperatures. Notably, the γ-FeOOH/KGM(Ga)/PNIPAM thermosensitive hydrogel achieves a remarkably high rate of 92.3% in the removal of uranium from the wastewater containing carbonates and maintains the efficiency of uranium removal from uranium mine wastewater at over 90%. Relying on electron spin resonance and free radical capture experiment, we reveal the adsorption-reduction-nucleation-crystallization mechanism of uranium on γ-FeOOH/KGM(Ga)/PNIPAM thermosensitive hydrogel. Overall, this strategy provides a promising solution to treating uranium-contaminated wastewater, showing a massive potential in water purification.

Abstract:Uranium mono-nitride (UN) microspheres are expected to play an important role in various miniaturization module reactors. The combination of UN core and tri-structural-isotropic (TRISO) coatings will bring improved efficiency and safety. Carbon-containing gel microspheres were prepared by external gelation, followed by carbothermal reduction and nitridation to synthesize UN. The effects of C/U molar ratios and heat-treatment schemes on the composition and microstructures of UN microspheres were studied. The results indicated that the external gelation could be used to prepare UN microspheres, with the highest UN content of 93wt%.

Abstract:Uranium is an indispensable part of the nuclear industry that benefits us, but its consequent pollution of water bodies also makes a far-reaching impact on human society. The rapid, efficient and convenient extraction of uranium from water is to be a top priority. Thanks to the super hydrophilic and fast adsorption rate of microgel, it has been the ideal adsorbent in water; however, it was too difficult to recover the microgel after adsorption, which limited its practical applications. Here, we developed a uranyl-ion affine and recyclable microgel container that has not only the rapid swelling rate of microgel particles but also allows the detection of the adsorption saturation process by the naked eye.

Abstract:In this study, a thermal-responsive hydrogel, sodium alginate/polyamidoxime/poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) hydrogel (SA/PAO/PNIPAm), was prepared via radical polymerization. The uranium (U) capturing properties of the hydrogel were investigated. The results reveal that SA/PAO/PNIPAm can effectively remove U(VI) from aqueous solution, and the maximal adsorption capacity was calculated to be 319.49 mg g −1 at 305.15 K and pH 5.0. Furthermore, the adsorption mechanism was revealed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis and density functional theory simulations. In particular, high desorption efficiency was observed by changing the desorption temperature, which could reduce secondary pollutants in elution process.

Abstract:Polymer hydrogels, with abundant ion diffusion paths, are promising for uranium capture in aqueous solutions. Herein, a robust supramolecular hydrogel with superior structural stability and mechanical strength is fabricated under acidic conditions via hydrogen bonding interactions between polyethyleneimine and cellulose nanofibers. The supramolecular hydrogel has a maximum uranium uptake capacity of 641 mg-U/g at pH=7, together with a high tolerance towards interfering metal cations. The uranium uptake proceeds via adsorption and subsequent deposition; in the latter the adsorbed uranyl ions are partially combined with local hydroxide ions induced by polyethyleneimine. The supramolecular hydrogel, with the merits of easy fabrication and cyclic utilization, has great potentials for uranium removal and recovery from uranium-containing wastewater.

Abstract:The UO2 ceramic microspheres are the most important materials in the spherical fuel elements for high temperature reactor (HTR). A process for preparation of UO2 kernels known as total gelation process of uranium (TGU) was developed as the production process of 10 mW HTR at Tsinghua University. The TGU process is based on the traditional sol-gel process, external gelation process and internal gelation process of uranium (EGU and IGU), which implies that the gelation action is initiated both by ammonia out of the gel particles and hemxamethyl tetra-amine (HMTA) inside the gel particles. The gelation behavior and the properties of uranium microspheres were investigated of the solution with and without HMTA. It is observed that good spherical particles can be obtained without HMTA in the sol, which indicates a more controllable and industrialized route will be set up. Contrasts between this route and the traditional EGU were also listed.

Abstract:Colorimetric uranium sensors based on uranyl (UO2(2+)) specific DNAzyme and gold nanoparticles (AuNP) have been developed and demonstrated using both labeled and label-free methods. In the labeled method, a uranyl-specific DNAzyme was attached to AuNP, forming purple aggregates. The presence of uranyl induced disassembly of the DNAzyme functionalized AuNP aggregates, resulting in red individual AuNPs. Once assembled, such a "turn-on" sensor is highly stable, works in a single step at room temperature, and has a detection limit of 50 nM after 30 min of reaction time. The label-free method, on the other hand, utilizes the different adsorption properties of single-stranded and double-stranded DNA on AuNPs, which affects the stability of AuNPs in the presence of NaCl. The presence of uranyl resulted in cleavage of substrate by DNAzyme, releasing a single stranded DNA that can be adsorbed on AuNPs and protect them from aggregation. Taking advantage of this phenomenon, a "turn-off" sensor was developed, which is easy to control through reaction quenching and has 1 nM detection limit after 6 min of reaction at room temperature. Both sensors have excellent selectivity over other metal ions and have detection limits below the maximum contamination level of 130 nM for UO2(2+) in drinking water defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This study represents the first direct systematic comparison of these two types of sensor methods using the same DNAzyme and AuNPs, making it possible to reveal advantages, disadvantages, versatility, limitations, and potential applications of each method. The results obtained not only allow practical sensing application for uranyl but also serve as a guide for choosing different methods for designing colorimetric sensors for other targets.
Ultra-sensitive and Stable N-doped Carbon Dots for Selective Detection of Uranium Through Electron Transfer Induced UO2+(V) Sensing Mechanism

Abstract:Unintended leakage of toxic and radioactive uranyl ion (UO22+) ions poses high harmful to human health and environment, hence its monitoring and detection is of utmost significance. Here, we developed a mild synthetic route to prepare stable N-doped carbon nanodots (CDs) with special hydrophilicity functional groups and graphitic N by polymerization and carbonization of novel norfloxacin precursor with nitrogen heterocyclic structure. The morphology, chemical structure, fluorescent properties, sensing competition and selectivity behaviors of CDs-UO22+ were systematically analyzed. Controllable experiments including low and high concentration CDs-UO22+ and another type of carbon dots (TEA-CDs) with low graphitic N amount using triethanolamine (TEA) precursor without nitrogen heterocyclic structure were designed, which further confirmed the effective coordination and interaction mechanism between CDs and UO22+ that graphitic N in CDs induced the formation UC:4(V) by electron transfer. It is very suitable for on-site and real-time monitoring of UO22+ with an ultra-fast response time (similar to 20 s) and low detection limit of 20.38 nM (4.7 mu g L-1), which is lower than the permissible limits (30 mu g L-1) defined by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). More importantly, different form the liquid sensor, solid sensors (printed test strip and hydrogel) were also successfully employed to monitor UO(2)(2+ )targets quickly, broadening the potential application for the advanced image encryptions.
Synthesis and Gas Sensing Properties of Urchin-Like Cuo Self-Assembled by Nanorods Through A Poly(Ethylene Glycol)-Assisted Hydrothermal Process

Abstract:Urchin-like CuO, consisting of closely packed nanorods with a diameter of 10nm, have been successfully synthesized by a poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-assisted hydrothermal route at low temperature of 100°C. The as-obtained Urchin-like CuO were thoroughly characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) study, Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and Gas sensor measurements. From the XRD pattern, all the peaks detected can be assigned to CuO in a monoclinic structure with lattice parameters a=4.662, b=3.416 and c=5.118 (JCPDS card no. 65-2309). The FESEM and TEM showed that the diameter of the urchin-like CuO sphere is about 1µm. Further investigation of the formation mechanism reveals that the PEG-assisted hydrothermal process is vital to the formation of 3D structures. Besides the template function, PEG often plays as a reductant while reacting with Cu(+2). In our case, no impurity peaks of Cu2O were observed in the XRD pattern, implying that PEG did not reduce Cu(+2) to Cu(+1). We attribute this to the high concentration of PEG. The sensor based on the urchin-like CuO nanostructures exhibit excellent ethanol-sensing properties at reduced working temperature (200°C), which shows a sensitivity two times higher than that of CuO particles(about 100nm, made from calcinations of Cu(NO3)2 at 400°C). The enhancement in sensitivity of the as-prepared CuO may be contributed to the fancy 3D nanostructures.

Abstract:The rapid and efficient identification of uranium oxides is of great significance in the field of nuclear security. A feasible SERS strategy assisted by Ag2O for rapid detection of trace amount of uranium oxides (similar to 1.8 mu g/mL for UO2 and similar to 3.6 mu g/mL for U3O8) was proposed and described. The effects of laser power on the Raman and SERS of uranium oxides were investigated. And the SERS mechanism was discussed by constructing several types of SERS substrates. Uranyl ions produced from hydrolysis and oxidation of uranium oxides are the key components for their SERS, where efficient photoinduced charge transfer process from Ag2O to uranyl ions occurs, resulting in a more intense Raman mode. The easily obtained but clearly distinguished SERS signals allow us to selectively and quickly detect the uranium oxides from mixtures, which may be practically applied to nuclear antiterrorism.
Uranyl-specific binding at a functionalised interface: a chemophotonic fibre optic sensor platform

Abstract:Detection of radiological materials in the solution phase is restricted by conventional radiation-counting techniques owing to extreme attenuation. Chemical sensing of the resultant radiological species such as uranyl UO(2)(2+) is possible on the surface of a plastic or glass fibre optic. A dihydroxy isoamethryin complex is tethered to the fibre surface which has a large extinction coefficient (119 000 M(-1) cm(-1) at lambda = 439 nm) and changes colour upon binding UO(2)(2+). The spectral changes are greater on the surface than in solution and binding is specific to UO(2)(2+) with small interferences from Gd(3+). Monitoring the spectral response in three detector bands in the red, green and blue enable the optical power change to be measured with sensitivities of 1 mdB, allowing UO(2)(2+) to be detected confidently at 50-100 ppb levels. Real-time kinetic analysis enables discrimination between the target species and possible interferents.

Abstract:Nuclear facilities are widely used in fields such as national defense, industry, scientific research, and medicine, which play a huge role in military and civilian use. However, in the process of widespread application of nuclear technology, uranium and its compounds with high carcinogenic and biologically toxic cause a lot of environmental problems, such as pollutions of water, atmosphere, soil, or ecosystem. Bioensors with sensitivity and specificity for the detection of uranium are highly demand. Nucleic acid enzymes (DNAzyme) with merits of high sensitivity and selectivity for targets as excellent molecular recognition elements are commonly used for uranium sensor development. In this perspective review, we summarize DNAzyme-based biosensors for the quantitative detection of uranyl ions by integrating with diverse signal outputting strategies, such as fluorescent, colorimetry, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, and electrochemistry. Different design methods, limit of detection, and practical applications are fully discussed. Finally, the challenges, potential solutions, and future prospects of such DNAzyme-based sensors are also presented.

Abstract:The extraction of uranium from strong acidic radioactive wastewater is vital and challenging to sustainable development of nuclear energy. In order to improve the selective uranium adsorption, a phytic acid decorated multiple hydorgel network (MA-U-PA/GG-CS-Ca) was constructed by incorporating phytic acid modified covalent organic polymers to gellan gum and chitosan hydrogel by supramolecular self-assembly. The results indicated that the selectivity ratio (SU) of MA-U-PA/GG-CS-Ca for uranium adsorption increased from 28 to 72%. The adjacent –P = O groups within the phytic acid molecule reduces the free energy of the coordination reaction with uranium, which is favorable to the uranium adsorption under acidic condition.

Abstract:Uranium extraction from seawater (UES) has important strategic significance as it can provide a solution to alleviate the future shortage of uranium resources for nuclear power production. This work reports an alginate-based three-dimensional (3D) supermacroporous fabricated by facile cryo-polymerization and two-step grafting modification (AO-PAM/Alg) hydrogel for efficient UES. The supermacroporous and 3D interconnected pore structure of AO-PAM/Alg facilitate an increased contact flux of seawater and the diffusion rate of uranyl ions. It shows a maximum uranium adsorption capacity of 1375 mg/g at room temperature (25°C and pH of 6.0). In seawater, AO-PAM/Alg reaches adsorption equilibrium within 20 days, with the final adsorption capacity of 6.23 mg/g. AO-PAM/Alg also exhibits considerable reusability and adsorption selectivity. The current AO-PAM/Alg hydrogel holds great potential for practical UES. And the current macroporous adsorbent preparation strategy can be further applied to other 3D supermacroporous adsorbent materials.

Abstract:The photocatalytic U(VI) reduction is regarded as an effective strategy for recovering uranium. However, its application in seawater uranium extraction poses challenges due to limited reactivity in the presence of carbonate and under atmospheric conditions. In the present study, a photoactive hydrogel made of carboxyl-functionalized g-C3N4/CdS (CCN/CdS) is designed for extracting uranium. The carboxyl groups on g-C3N4 enhance the affinity toward uranyl ions while CdS facilitates the activation of dissolved oxygen. Under atmospheric conditions, the prepared hydrogel catalyst achieves over 80% reduction rate of 0.1 mM U(VI) within 150 min in the presence of carbonate, without the assistance of any electron donors. During the photocatalytic process, U(VI) is reduced to form UO2+x. The hydrogel catalyst exhibits a high uranium extraction capacity of >434.5 mg g⁻1 and the products can be effectively eluted using a 0.1 M NaCO3 solution. Furthermore, this hydrogel catalyst offers excellent stability, good recyclability, outstanding antifouling activity, and ease of separation, all of which are desirable for seawater uranium extraction. Finally, the test in real seawater demonstrates the successful extraction of uranium from seawater using the prepared hydrogel catalyst.
An Optical Fiber Sensor for Uranium Detection in Water

Abstract:An optical sensor for uranyl has been prepared based on a gold-plated D-shaped plastic optical fiber (POF) combined with a receptor consisting of a bifunctional synthetic molecule, 11-mercaptoundecylphosphonic acid (MUPA), with a phosphonic group for complexing the considered ion, and a sulfide moiety through which the molecule is fixed at the gold resonant surface as a molecular layer in an easy and reproducible way. The sensor is characterized by evaluating the response in function of the uranyl concentration in aqueous solutions of different compositions and real-life samples, such as tap water and seawater. The mechanism of the uranyl/MUPA interaction was investigated. Two different kinds of interactions of uranyl with the MUPA layer on gold from water are observed: a strong one and a weak one. In the presence of competing metal ions as Ca2+ and Mg2+, only the strong interaction takes place, with a high affinity constant (around 107 M−1), while a somewhat lower constant (i.e., around 106 M−1) is obtained in the presence of Mg2+ which forms stronger complexes with MUPA than Ca2+. Due to the high affinity and the good selectivity of the recognition element MUPA, a detection limit of a few μg L−1 is reached directly in natural water samples without any time-consuming sample pretreatment, making it possible for rapid, in situ controls of uranyl by the proposed sensor.
AIEgen-functionalized Metal-Organic Gel As a Bifunctional Platform for Efficient Adsorption and Portable Sensing of Gaseous Iodine.

Abstract:Herein, we proposed a novel metal-organic gel (YTU-G-1) for efficient adsorption and portable sensing of gaseous iodine. YTU-G-1 exhibits an unprecedentedly high detection sensitivity (KSV = 2.21 x 106 L mol-1) and an extremely low limit of detection (LOD) down to the pmol level (481 pmol L-1). YTU-G-1 also shows a marked iodine adsorption capacity of 1.398 g g-1. A wearable membrane was successfully fabricated via the electrospinning technique, which exhibits excellent skin-compatibility and serves as a portable tool for sensitive response to potential on-site nuclear emergencies. An AIEgen-functionalized luminescent metal-organic gel (YTU-G-1) with an extremely high luminescence quantum yield (95.5%) was prepared for gaseous iodine capture (1.398 g g-1) and detection (LOD: 481 pmol L-1).

Abstract:Rapid treatment of uranium in seawater is an important topic that needs to be addressed urgently. Microgel materials are considered ideal for rapid adsorption due to their ability to absorb water quickly. In a seawater environment, amidoxime materials exhibit superior selectivity for uranium enrichment. However, the modification of amidoxime groups onto microgels must be conducted in organic solvents. These solvents are unable to sufficiently swell and dissolve common microgels, leading to shrinkage that nearly blocks all modification reactions. Here, the thermo-responsive N'N -diethylpropionamide (DEA) was chose as the skeleton monomer to synthesize microgels, which showed both good hydrophilicity and oleophilicity properties The difference between the particle size of synthesized microgels in water and ethanol was not obvious. Due to the integration of microgels and kairamidoxime materials, the AO-Microgels demonstrate a maximum adsorption capacity of 79.29% within just 3 min. Additionally, their selective adsorption capacity for uranium in simulated seawater is remarkable. Furthermore, it simplifies the recycling process because of its intelligent temperature responsiveness.
