From Fast Follower To Emerging Leader: The Case Of Sany'S Accelerated Process Of Secondary Innovation

Abstract:SANY, one of the world's largest concrete machinery manufacturers, provides a good example to understand the accelerated technological capability building process of new generation latecomer firms, especially the process of transition from fast follower to emerging leader. Based on the case study of the accelerated secondary innovation process of SANY's leading products Trailer-mounted Concrete Pump and Truck-mounted Concrete Pump, this paper attempts to preliminarily explain why SANY can catch up with and challenge the international pioneers in a very short time. As the standard process of secondary innovation is usually based on formal importation and assimilation of foreign technology, latecomer firms usually formed the capability of creative imitation during the localization process of foreign imported technology. However, in SANY case, the accelerated process of secondary innovation leapfrogged the duplicative imitation stage and started directly from the creative imitation stage. Although SANY didn't import foreign technologies formally, SANY was a very active learner and integrator of world advanced technologies. Moreover, different from standard secondary innovation, SANY showed strong ambition to be the industry leader in the very beginning and transformed from follower to leader in a much shorter time.
