Abstract:The complex [Cu-2(mu -cis-oxpn)(phen)(NO3)(2)], where oxpn = N,N ' -bis(3-aminopropyl) oxamidato and phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, has been synthesized and its crystal structure determined by X-ray methods. The structure consists of binuclear copper (II) molecules in which the Cu (II) atoms are bridged by oxamidato group in the cis conformation, the Cu-Cu distance being 5.205(10) Angstrom. The coordination geometry around Cu (II) atoms is square pyramidal; the apex is occupied by a more weakly bonded O atom from a nitrate group. Electron delocalization is observed in the bridging oxamide moiety. The co-planarity of bridge ligand and basal plane around Cu (II) atoms may benefit spin super-exchange between two Cu (II) atoms. IR spectra of the binuclear complex are discussed.

Abstract:Two new polynuclear complexes [Ni6(amox)6(mu6-O)(mu3-OH)2](Cl2).6H2O and [Cu3(amox)3(mu3-OH)(mu3-Cl)](ClO4).4H2O (amox- = anion of 4-amino-4-methyl-2-pentanone oxime) have been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. The Ni(II) complex contains a novel Chinese-lantern-like Ni6 cage centered by an oxo ion. It contains the nearest octahedral Ni(II)...Ni(II) separation (<2.8 A) and exhibits strong antiferromagnetic properties. The Cu(II) complex has a cyclic trinuclear copper(II) core bridged by both mu3-OH(-) and mu3-Cl(-) ions. The magnetic susceptibilities of both antiferromagnetic complexes were fitted by using approximate models.

Abstract:By slightly changing the synthetic conditions, we have prepared two closely related linear tetranuclear CuII complexes with the symmetrical ONNO donor tetradentate Schiff-base ligand [H2L=(OH)C6H4(CH3)CN(CH2)3NC(CH3)C6H4(OH)] and with azide ions. These two distinctly coloured crystalline products were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and UV–Vis spectroscopy, CV, EPR spectra and variable temperature magnetic measurements. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies of the green [Cu4(μ-L)2(μ1,1-N3)2(N3)2] (1) and the red [Cu4(μ-L)2(μ1,1-N3)2(N3)2(H2O)2] (2) crystals show that the coordination environment of the two μ-phenoxo and μ1,1-azido bridged isomorphous tetranuclear CuII complexes are slightly different. Thus, both complexes are formed by very similar building units, although with a significant variation in the bridging Cu–O(phenoxo)–Cu and Cu–N(azido)–Cu bond angles. The consequences of these structural variations on the magnetic properties have been investigated from both the experimental and theoretical points of view by variable temperature magnetic measurements and DFT calculations.

Abstract:A new N,N'-disubstituted oxamide ligand H4OBO which I represents N,N'-bis(2-hydroxybenzyl)oxamide, related monomeric copper(II) complex salt Na-2[Cu(OBO)] . H2O and two oxamidato-bridged dinuclear copper(II) complexes, namely [Cu-2(OBO) (bipy)] . 2H(2)O (1), [Cu-2(OBO)(py)(4)] (2) (bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine, py = pyridine) have been synthesized. Single crystal X-ray analysis revealed that the complex 2 has a trans-oxamidato-bridged dinuclear copper(II) structure, in which each copper(II) ion exhibits a distorted square pyramidal surrounding. Complex 2 is rapidly turned into a complex [Cu-2(OBO)(py)(3)(H2O)(2)] (3) when exposed to the air. Based on the spin Hamiltonian H = -2JS(A) . S-B, the magnetic susceptibility data of 1 and 3 have been best fitted with J values of 209 and 161 cm(-1), respectively.

Abstract:Two polynuclear copper complexes containing the flexible ligand N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-(2-hydroxy-4,5-dimethylbenzyl)ethylenediamine (H2L) have been prepared and characterized structurally and magnetically. The complexes have the formula [Cu-3(II)(L)(2)(CH3OH)(2)](CIO4)(2)(1) and [Cu-3(II)(L)(2)((CuCl2)-Cl-I)(2)](2). X-ray single-crystal structure analyses show that both complexes contain linear Cu-II-Cu-II-Cu-II cores where adjacent Cu (II) ions are doubly bridged by phenolate groups of L2-. The coordination sphere of the terminal Can ions is square pyramidal with the methanol oxygen (complex 1) or the chloride ion of [CuCl2](-) (complex 2) situated at the apical position, whereas the central Cu(II) has a square coordination environment. The Cu-II-O-Cu-II bridging bond angles are in the range of 100.14 degrees similar to 101.79 degrees. Magnetic studies show that both complexes exhibit strong antiferromagnetic interaction with the spin exchange coupling constants (J) of -277(9) cm(-1) (1) and -299(3) cm(-1) (2) ((H) over cap=-2J((S) over cap (1)center dot (H) over cap (2)+(S) over cap (2)center dot (H) over cap3). The antiferromagnetic interactions have been found to be mainly related to the Cu-II-O-Cu-II bond angles. Larger Cu-O-Cu bond angles correspond to stronger antiferromagnetic interaction (more negative J values). CCDC 1057549, 1; 1057550, 2.

Abstract:Two new binuclear copper(II) complexes containing four spin carriers with pyridyl-substituted nitroxide radicals have been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. These complexes are formulated as [Cu-2(oxap)(IM4py)(2)](ClO4)(2) (1) and [Cu-2(oxap)(NIT4PY)(2)](ClO4)(2) (2), respectively, in which oxap stands for N,N'-bis(2-aminopropyl). IM4py stands for 2-(4'-pyridyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl and NIT4py for 2-(4'-pyridyl)-4,4,5, 5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide. The structures of the complexes consist of centrosymmetric trans oxamido-bridged copper(II) binuclear units and nitroxide radicals. In 1 and 2 the copper atoms are in a distorted square plane and radicals (IM4py and NIT4py) coordinate to copper via nitrogen atoms from pyridine rings. Magnetic analysis indicates that 1 and 2 exhibit strong metal-metal anti ferromagnetic coupling through oxamido-bridged and anti ferromagnetic exchange interactions between copper(II) ion and radicals, respectively. The magnetic behaviors are discussed with reference to their crystal structures.

Abstract:Three isomorphic oxamido-bridged trinuclear complexes of formulae [Cu(CuL(EtOH))2]·(EtOH)2(ClO4)2(H2O)0.5 (1), [Co(CuL(EtOH))2(EtOH)2]·(ClO4)2(H2O)0.5 (2), and [Mn(CuL(EtOH))2(EtOH)2]·(ClO4)2(H2O)0.5 (3) (H2L =2,3-dioxo-5,6:13,14-dichlorobenzo-7,12-diphenyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradeca-7,11-diene) have been synthesized and structurally characterized. The central ions of complexes 1–3 (Cu, Co, Mn) are all bridged by macrocyclic oxamido groups. The χM and μeff vs T plots in the 1.8–300K range for the three complexes exhibit antiferromagnetic coupled (based on isotropy H^=-2JS^i·S^j), with the best fit J=−188.85, −25.64 and −14.26cm−1, respectively. The values of magnetic exchange interactions through oxamido-bridge show: Cu–Cu>Cu–Co>Cu–Mn.

Abstract:The compartmental Schiff base ligands N,N'-ethylenebis(3-hydroxysalicylidene) (H4L) and N,N'-propylene-bis(3-hydroxysalicylidene) (H4L') have been employed in the synthesis of a cyclic tetranuclear Cu(II) complex [Cu-4(L')(2)(MeOH)(3)(H2O)]center dot[Cu-4(L')(2)(MeOH)(3)] (1), a novel octanuclear Cu(II) complex [Cu-8(L-L)(2)(H2O)(4)(mu(2)-H2O)]center dot 3DMF center dot 3H(2)O (2) and a hetero-octanuclear Cu(II)-Fe(III) complex [Cu4Fe4(L)(4)(H2O)(3)(mu(3)-O)(2)]center dot 3DMF center dot 3H(2)O (3). During the formation of the Cu-8 complex (2), a new bis-Schiff base ligand (L-L)(8-) forms via the ortho-para C-C coupling of two H4L ligands. The bicyclic complex (2) is comprised of two cyclic Cu-4 units that are similar to that of complex 1. In the Cu-4 unit, the alternate Cu(II) ions are singly bridged by phenoxo groups. The three complexes display overall antiferromagnetic coupling, and the Cu(II)-Cu(II) magnetic coupling constant falls in the range -117.2 to -473.6 cm(-1) for complexes 1 and 2 corresponding to the bridging Cu-O-phenoxide-Cu bond angles of 124.3-131.0 degrees.

Abstract:A new complex, [Cu(L) (H2O) Mn (C2O4)] center dot 4H(2)O (H2L = 1, 4, 8, 11 -tetraazacyclotetradecane-2,3-dione), was synthesized and structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. The complex crystallizes in monoclinic space group P2(l)/n with a = 0. 97471 (5) nm, b =0. 89316 (5) nm, c = 2. 35635 (11) nm, beta = 92. 441(2)degrees, V=2.04951(18) nm(3), D-c = 1. 691 Mg/m(3), Z=4, R-1 =0. 0607, wR(2), =0. 1915(based on F-2). The complex consists of [CuL(H2O) Mn(II), oxalate and lattice H2O molecules. Through the alternate oxalate bridges, the Mn(II) ions form a zig-zag one-dimensional chain, while the other two coordination sites of the Mn(II) ion are occupied by two oxygen atoms from L2- of [CuL(H2O)], giving rise to a mixed oxalate- and oxamido-bridged one-dimensional bimetallic complex. Magnetic studies show the presence of anti-ferromagnetic interaction between the Cu (II) and Mn (II) ions and between the adjacent Mn (II) ions. Best fit to the experimental data by means of MAGPACK software gives the magnetic coupling constant of J(Cu-Mn) = -13. 1 cm(-1) and J(Mn-Mn)= -0. 87 cm(-1).

Abstract:Two acetylenedicarboxylate complexes, [Mn2(C4O4)(phen)4(H2O)2](ClO4)2·H2O (1) and [Cu(C4O4)(2,2′-bpy)]n (2), have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses and IR spectra. MnII ions have distorted octahedral coordination geometry and bridged by C4O42− to form a binuclear structure. Thermal analysis shows C4O42− released in the range of 180–280°C. CuII is five-coordinated by 2,2′-bipyridine and three oxygen atoms from three different C4O42− ligands, leading to a square-pyramidal coordination geometry. Each C4O42− links three CuII centers through bifunctional carboxylate to form a polymeric structure of (4,4) layers with nodes being dimer of Cu2O2 and bridges of C4O42−. Its variable-temperature magnetism was also investigated.

Abstract:The preparation and characterization of a series of dinuclear copper(Ⅱ)complexes, Cu2L2IA(ClO42, are presented. The ligand L is 1,10-phenanthroline(phen), 5-nitro-1,10-phenanthroline(NO2 phen)and 2,2'-bipyridine, and IA denotes the dianion of iodanilic acid. The complexes are characterized by elemental analysis, IR, electronic spectra, ESR and variable temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements. The coordination geometry of copper(Ⅱ)ion is probably a distorted square pyramid. Room temperature ESR spectra of all the complexes studied show the ΔMs=±2 half field transitions. The variable temperature magnetic susceptibility of Cu2(phen)2IA(ClO4)2 had been measured(4.2~300 K)and the exchange parameter,J, was found to be -29.18 cm-1 using the Heisenberg model. This indicates that an antiferromagnetic interaction exists between the metal ions.

Abstract:An unsymmetrical oxo-bridged diiron(III) complex has been synthesized and its biological activities have been characterized by various physico-chemical techniques.An unsymmetrical oxo-bridged diiron(III) complex [Fe2L2(mu-O)], {H2L = trans-N,N'-bis-(2hydroxy-1-naphthalidehydene)-cyclohexanediamine} has been synthesized and characterized by various physico-chemical techniques. In the complex, each deprotonated bi-anionic L-2-serves as a terminal tetradentate ligand (N2O2) and coordinates to one Fe to form a [FeL](+) unit. Two [FeL](+) units are further linked by an oxo-bridge to construct the binuclear oxo-Fe species with intramolecular Fe-Fe separation of 3.38 angstrom. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility studies revealed a strong antiferromagnetic interaction between two iron centers with J of -112 cm(-1). The interaction of the complex with CT-DNA was studied by various spectroscopic and viscosity measurements, which indicated that the complex could interact with CT-DNA through intercalation. In addition, the complex is able to cleave pBR322 DNA in the presence of H2O2. Furthermore, the interaction of the compound with BSA was also investigated, which indicated that the complex could quench the intrinsic fluorescence of BSA by a static quenching mechanism.

Abstract:An ore-bridged binuclear iron(III) complex, [Fe(phen)(2)PhCOO]2OCl2 . 7H(2)O, was synthesized and the crystal structure indicated that two octahedrally coordinated iron(III) ions bridged with oxygen atoms formed a non-linear complex. The bond angle of Fe-O-Fe is 155.6 degrees. The studies of magnetic properties showed that there was strong antiferromagnetic superexchange coupling (J = -80.8 cm(-1)) between two S = 5/2 iron(III) ions.

Abstract:A new binuclear Cu(II) complex: [Cu-2(phen)(2)(4,4'-dpy)(3)(OH)(2)] center dot 2NO(3) center dot 5.5H(2)O (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline and 4,4'-dpy = 4,4'-dipyridine) 1 has been prepared and determined by single X-ray diffraction. The two Cu2+ ions are bridged by a 4,4'-dpy ligand. The intramolecular coupling between the two Cu-II (S = 1/2) ions was found to be weakly antiferromagnetic (J = - 0.38 cm(-1)).

Abstract:Two cubane-type tetranuclear nickel(II) and copper(II) complexes, [Ni 4 (L 1 ) 4 (CH 3 OH) 4 ] ( 1 ) and [Cu 4 (L 2 ) 4 ]·H 2 O ( 2 ), where L 1 and L 2 are the dianionic forms of the tridentate Schiff bases 4-nitro-2-[(2-hydroxyethylimino)methyl]phenol (H 2 L 1 ) and 5-methoxy-2-[(2-hydroxyethylimino)methyl]phenol (H 2 L 2 ), respectively, have been synthesized and characterized by physicochemical methods and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The magnetic properties of the complexes show the presence of ferromagnetic interactions for complex 1 and antiferromagnetic interactions for complex 2 , mediated by hydroxyl bridges.

Synthesis and Magnetism of Binuclear Fe(II) Complexes Based on Bis-pyridylhydrazone Schiff Base Ligands

Abstract:Two binuclear Fe(II) complexes of bis-pyridylhydrazone Schiff base ligands HLx (x=1, 2) have been successfully synthesized and characterized by infrared spectroscopy, X-ray single crystal diffraction and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Single-crystal structural determinations reveal that the Fe(II) ion is chelated by two pyridylhydrazone Schiff base ligands to form a FeN4O2 distorted octahedral structure and four free perchlorates serve as charge balancing anions. Intermolecular pi...pi stacking is present in the complexes, connecting adjacent [Fe-2(HLx)(2)](4+) cations to form supramolecular chains. Magnetic susceptibility measurement shows that the complexes are both in the high-spin state, meanwhile complex 2 exhibits weak intermolecular ferromagnetic coupling.

Abstract:Two cyano-bridged heterobimetallic complexes, [Cu2(bpca)2(H2O)2Fe2(5,5′-dmbipy)2(CN)8]·2[Cu(bpca)Fe(5,5′-dmbipy)(CN)4]·4H2O (4) and [Cu(bpca)Fe(4,4′-dmbipy)(CN)4]n (5) (bpca=bis(2-pyridylcarbonyl)amidate; 5,5′-dmbipy=5,5′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyridine; 4,4′-dmbipy=4,4′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyridine), have been synthesized with the use of [Fe(5,5′-dmbipy)(CN)4]− (2) or [Fe(4,4′-dmbipy)(CN)4]− (3) as building blocks. Complex 4 contains two dinuclear and one tetranuclear clusters in an asymmetric unit whereas complex 5 features a one-dimensional zigzag chain. Magnetic studies show ferromagnetic coupling between Cu(II) and Fe(III) ions for both 4 and 5.
