Abstract:White organic light-emitting devices (WOLEDs) are of considerable interest owing to their attractive characteristics and potential application for flat panel display and solid-state lighting source. Currently WOLEDs are the new increasing point in the area of organic optoelectronics due to their high power efficiency and low consuming. After a brief overview of the WOLEDs operating principles and basic emitting structure, a review is presented on recent progress in WOLEDs architectures and functional materials. The advantages of several kinds of WOLED architectures in terms of performance such as luminance (turn-on voltage), efficiency (external quantum efficiency, power efficiency and current efficiency) and color quality (Commission Internationale d'Eclairage coordinates and color rendering index) are discussed. Small molecular materials, polymeric materials and phosphorescent materials are described with emphasis on their material issues pertaining to charge carrier transporting, color, and luminance efficiencies. With the development of novel architecture, a series of WOLEDs including our group work with high performance are presented. Also other structures of WOLEDs such as phosphorescent and fluorescent dyes doping and exciplex emission are compared. Important issues relating to the development of WOLEDs are briefly addressed as well.
