Abstract:Few-mode-fiber (FMF) based mode division multiplexing (MDM) is a promising technique to further increase the transmission capacity of single mode fibers. We propose and numerically investigate a fiber-optical mode converter (MC) using long period gratings (LPGs) fabricated on the FMF by point-by-point CO2 laser inscription technique. In order to precisely excite three modes (LP01, LP11, and LP02), both untilted LPG and tilted LPG are comprehensively optimized through the length, index modulation depth, and tilt angle of the LPG in order to achieve a mode contrast ratio (MCR) of more than 20dB with less wavelength dependence. It is found that the proposed MCs have obvious advantages of high MCR, low mode crosstalk, easy fabrication and maintenance, and compact size.

Abstract:Modal inspection of optical fibers is important for multimode application but it is challenging to collect in-situ information of propagating modes for evaluation and manipulation. Here we demonstrate direct observation of multimode interference in Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped micro/nanofibers. Luminescent interference patterns are visualized by visible up-conversion of Er3+ ions and are used for establishing the existence of higher order modes co-propagating with fundamental modes. We use fast Fourier transform to analyze the patterns in detail and obtain excellent agreement between experiment and calculation on beat lengths of the interference. Effective index differences among higher order modes and a fundamental mode of a microfiber are also experimentally investigated with the assistance of interference patterns, revealing the characteristic of modal dispersions.

Abstract:We present the experimental realization of transverse mode conversion in an optical fiber via an optically induced long-period grating. The transient gratings are generated by femtosecond laser pulses, exploiting the Kerr effect to translate intensity patterns emerging from multimode interference into a spatial refractive index modulation. Since these modulations exist only while the pump beam is present, they can be used for optical switching of transverse modes. As only a localized part of the grating was written at a time and the probe beam was co-propagating with the pump beam the required pulse energies could be reduced to 120\,nJ which is about a factor of 600 lower than in previous quasi-continuous-wave experiments. Accompanying numerical simulations allow a better understanding of the involved effects and show excellent agreement to the experimental results.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the conversion of one mode (x-pol LP11a or OAM-1) to eight different modes (LP11a, LP11b, OAM+1, OAM-1 with two polarization) with a 10 Gbit/s on-off keying (OOK) signal in 1.1 km few-mode fiber (FMF), and achieve bit-error rate (BER) below 2e-3.

Abstract:Nonlinear propagation of signals in single-mode fiber is well understood, and is typically observed by measuring the temporal profile or optical spectrum of an emerging signal. In multimode fibers, the nonlinearity has both a spatial and a temporal element, and a complete investigation of the interactions between propagating modes requires resolving the output in both space and time. We report here spatiotemporal measurements of two nonlinear interacting LP$_{0m}$ modes of a step-index few-mode fiber (FMF). We describe a method to selectively excite two propagating modes through the use of a phase-mask directly patterned on the entrance face of the fiber. The output is resolved by raster-scanning a near-field tapered single-mode optical fiber probe that is connected to a high-speed detector. The results show that in the presence of nonlinearity, the output exhibits a spatiotemporal character that cannot be adequately characterized by a camera image or pulse shape alone.

Abstract:We present theoretical and experimental evidence of high-gain far-detuned nonlinear frequency conversion, extending towards both the visible and the mid-infrared, in a few-mode graded-index silica fiber pumped at 1.064 , and more specifically achieving gains of hundreds of dB per meter below 0.65 and beyond 3.5 . Interestingly, our findings highlight the potential of graded-index fibers for enabling high-gain wavelength conversion into the strong-loss spectral region of silica. Such advancements require an accurate interpretation of intramodal and intermodal four-wave mixing processes.

Abstract:The guiding modes of a single mode fiber(@1550nm),when the cutoff frequency of the fiber is less than the frequency of the launching field,have been investigated.The fused tapered fiber has been fabricated by using the flame of a spirit lamp.If controlling the fiber dimension well during pulling process,the unique tapered fiber will have a multimode input end and a single mode output end for launching wavelength 632.8nm,which are demonstrated in our experiment.

Abstract:Anti-resonant hollow-core fibers are optical fiber waveguides which exhibit very low dispersion, high damage threshold and ultra-low nonlinear response. However, they typically deliver the light in several spatial modes, whereas their application usually requires that they support a single spatial mode. We report the principles, fabrication, demonstration and characterization of anti-resonant hollow-core fibres with strong differential modal attenuations and low overall attenuations. These fibers perform as single-mode and are eminently suitable for delivery of powerful ultrashort optical pulses in machining, cutting, welding and multiphoton microscopy applications.

Abstract:We investigated an all-fiber mode converter based on long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) written in the few-mode fiber. Mode conversion between the fundamental core mode and different higher-order core modes (LP11, LP21, and LP02 modes) can be realized via a single LPFG with an efficiency of 99% at the resonance wavelength. Moreover, optimized mode conversion between the LP01 and LP21 modes can be realized by cascading two LPFGs with different grating pitches. The maximum conversion efficiency is estimated to be ∼99.5% at 1553 nm. The orbital angular momentum states with different topological charges (±1,±2) are demonstrated experimentally. The all-fiber LPFG mode converters could have promising applications in the mode-division multiplexing optical communications.

Abstract:We experimentally isolate and directly observe multimode solitons in few-mode graded-index fiber. By varying the input energy and modal composition of the launched pulse, we observe a continuous variation of multimode solitons with different spatiotemporal properties. They exhibit an energy-volume relation that is distinct from those of single-mode and fully spatiotemporal solitons.

Abstract:We provide a complete analysis, from theory to experiment, of the spontaneous emergence of a discretized conical wave of X-type (i.e., a localized 2D+1 space-time wavepacket) when an intense ultrashort pulse nonlinearly propagates in a multimode fiber. In particular, we reveal that this spatiotemporal phenomenon corresponds to broadband intermodal dispersive wave emission from an unsteady localized wave structure formed during nonlinear propagation. Theoretical phase-matching predictions are experimentally and numerically confirmed in a commercially-available step-index multimode fiber. Our results provide a general understanding of phase-matched radiations emitted by nonlinear waves in multidimensional dispersive optical system.

Abstract:An all-fiber mode converter assisted by coiled-fiber long-period grating (CFLPG), which is formed by periodically coiling one thin tapered single-mode fiber (SMF) onto one thick straight tapered few-mode fiber (FMF), is experimentally demonstrated. Owing to the strong periodic modulation of the coiled tapered SMF to evanescent field of the straight tapered FMF, specific higher-order modes in the FMF can be successfully excited from the fundamental mode of the SMF. Moreover, coupling efficiency from fundamental mode of the SMF to specific higher-order mode of the FMF can be optimized by adjusting the number of the coiling period, which is beneficial for the design and fabrication of mode converter. This proposed structure can be extended to even higher-order mode conversion, and has flexibility in coupling efficiency optimization and compatibility with current optical fiber communication systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss theoretical and experimental aspects of nonlinear pulse propagation in long-period fiber gratings. We derive nonlinear coupled mode equations for co-propagating core and cladding modes in a long-period fiber grating and show that the intensity dependent index can be used to tune the mode coupling, thereby creating a mechanism for pulseshaping and all-optical switching. Extensive numerical simulations, which describe the nonlinear pulse dynamics, are compared with experiments. We discuss the application of these nonlinear effects to signal processing in all-optical fiber communications.

Abstract:Space domain is regarded as the only known physical dimension left of lightwave to exploit in optical communications. Recently, lots of research efforts have been devoted to using spatial modes of fibers to increase data transmission capacity in optical fiber communications. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a different approach to exploiting the space dimension, i.e. transferring image by space dimension encoding/decoding using superpositions of spatial modes in km-scale few-mode fiber. Three grayscale images are successfully transmitted through a 1.1-km few-mode fiber by employing either 4 modes, i.e. three linearly polarized (LP) modes of LP01, LP11a, LP11b and one orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode of OAM(-1), or 2 modes (OAM(+1), OAM(-1)). The bit-error rate is evaluated and zero error among all received data is achieved, showing favorable fiber link communication performance using the spatial modes of fiber for encoding/decoding. Moreover, we also demonstrate the 4 modes (LP01, LP11a, LP11b and OAM(-1)) encoding/decoding for image transfer in a 10-km few-mode fiber in the experiment. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We report what is to our knowledge the first experimental demonstration of a photorefractive spatial mode converter (based on mutually pumped phase conjugation) that couples light efficiently from a multimode fiber into a singlemode fiber with an extremely large degree of tolerance to misalignment. Using an argon laser (514.5 nm) and a barium titanate crystal, we have demonstrated that the laser light can be coupled from a multimode fiber (core diameter 100 microm, numerical aperture 0.37) into a single-mode fiber (core diameter 2.9 microm, numerical aperture 0.11), with an efficiency of ~15% and an alignment tolerance of ~100 microm. The coupling efficiency is more than 2 orders of magnitude, and the tolerance to misalignments is more than 30 times better than the corresponding values achievable by conventional techniques.

Abstract:We demonstrate the first analog fiber-optic link using high-order modes in FMFs to improve SFDR and reduce WDM penalties due to fiber nonlinearities. An 8-dB SFDR improvement and a 15dB nonlinear crosstalk suppression were achieved.
