Abstract:A mild and efficient method for the synthesis of 2,5-disubstituted chalcogenophenes is reported. This method involves two steps of reactions via one-pot approach by employing commercially available and cost-effective alkynes and element chalcogen. Further, by using LiNH2 as the promoter and DMSO/EtOH as the solvent, Cu-catalyzed Glaser coupling-cycloaddition processes are dramatically enhanced that a diverse range of chalcogenophenes can be obtained in good to excellent yields under mild conditions. Controlled experiments show that trisulfur radical anion (S3 & sdot;-) is the key intermediate and DMSO/EtOH serves as the hydrogen source, while alcohol may facilitate the transition state. The mild and highly efficient constructions of 2,5-disubstitued thiophenes, selenophenes and tellurophenes are achieved by using a one-pot, two-step protocol that combine Cu-catalyzed Glaser coupling with LiNH2-mediated cycloaddition. And the DMSO/EtOH mixture solvent is found to short the reaction time and improve the reaction yield by promoting the production of S3 & sdot;- and stabilizing the transition state.image

Abstract:The construction of phosphorus stereocenters under metal-free conditions remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we report a mechanistically distinct chiral electrophilic selenium catalysis-enabled desymmetrizing cyclization to access valuable chiral phosphorus-stereogenic heterocycles with high efficiency. This ambient temperature method affords a broad range of chiral phosphorus compounds that bear a phenolic hydroxyl group as a useful synthetic handle and, thus, enriches the toolbox for rapid generation of molecular complexity. The control experiments and DFT calculations indicate that the dual-hydrogen-bonding bridge formed between the substrate and TfO- anion plays a crucial role in determining the enantioselectivity of the transformation.

Abstract:The synthesis of polystyrene-supported alpha-selenoacetic acid, alpha-selenopropionic acid, and alpha-selenophenylacetic acid is described. The reaction of the dilithio derivatives of polymer-supported alpha-selenocarboxylic acids with racemic epoxides or optically active styrene oxide afforded polystyrene-supported gamma-substituted alpha-selenobutyrolactones. The alpha-alkylation reaction of gamma-substituted polystyrene-supported alpha-selenobutyrolactones provided another route for the synthesis of polystyrene-supported alpha,gamma-disubstituted alpha-selenobutyrolactones. Subsequent oxidation-elimination with an excess of 30% hydrogen peroxide at room temperature afforded substituted (3- and 5-mono-; 3,4- and 3,5-di) 2(5H)-furanones in high yields and good purities.

Abstract:A method to synthesize benzofurylselenocyanates, benzothienylselenocyanates and indolylselenocyanates via electrophilic selenocyanogen cyclization was established. This sequential process was conducted under mild conditions in a short time. This protocol was successfully applied to late‐stage functionalization of bioactive molecules. Notablely, the selenocyanate can be converted into other valuable Se‐containing compounds and showed antitumor activity to human hepatoma cells HepG2.

Abstract:Hexavalent Se? Yes! Selenium on polymers exhibits quite different properties compared to that in small molecules. Hexavalent Se, rare in organoselenium chemistry, was found to be the major species on polymers. The high-valent Se species on recyclable polymer resins could quickly catalyze the oxidation reaction of cyclohexene with H2O2 in water to produce industrially important intermediate trans-1,2-cyclohexanediol in almost quantitative yield. In the catalytic cycle, high valent Se species were reduced to divalent Se, a highly activated species that could be re-oxidized by air so that no excess H2O2 was required for the reaction. The results were superior to those of reactions catalyzed by small molecules, for which excess H2O2, long reaction time or expensive CF3-activated catalysts and environmentally unfriendly MeCN solvent were required.

Abstract:The development of polymerization methodology is essential for the pursuit of the structural and functional diversity of polymers. To construct polymers with new functional groups, the existing reactions may not meet the requirements of high efficiency and selectivity, and reaction customizations on the substrates and conditions are hence necessary to fulfill the demands of polymer synthesis. Herein, to realize direct conversion from elemental selenium (Se) to functional polymers with unique Se-containing heterocycles, the efficient transition-metal-free room temperature regioselective polymerizations of Se and alkynones with desired reactivity and selectivity were developed. Poly(1,4-diselenin)s or polyselenophenes with high molecular weights (M n up to 29,400 g/mol) were afforded in high yields (up to 92%), which showed excellent solubility, stability, and high refractive indices (up to 1.8487 at 633 nm). The development of Se-based polymerizations through reaction customization is anticipated to accelerate the exploration of Se chemistry and Se-containing polymer materials.

Abstract:Reaction of polymer-supported selenium bromide with ortho allylated phenols and subsequent cleavage from the polymer by treatment of methyl iodide efficiently afforded 2-iodomethyl-2,3-dihydrobenzofurans in good yields and high purities. The polymeric reagent can be regenerated and reused as environmentally friendly reagent.

Abstract:In the past decade, selenocyclization has been extensively exploited for the preparation of a wide range of selenylated heterocycles with versatile activities. Previously, selenium electrophile-based and FeCl3-promoted methods were employed for the synthesis of selenylated benzoxazines. However, these methods are limited by starting material availability and low atomic economy, respectively. Inspired by the recent catalytic selenocyclization approaches based on distinctive pathways, we rationally constructed an efficient and greener double-redox catalytic system for the access to diverse selenylated benzoxazines. The coupling of I2/I− and Fe3+/Fe2+ catalytic redox cycles enables aerial O2 to act as the driving force to promote the selenocyclization. Control and test redox experiments confirmed the roles of each component in the catalytic system, and a PhSeI-based pathway is proposed for the selenocyclization process.

Abstract:A straightforward and efficient electrochemical method for the anodic oxidative selenenylation of 2-(2-arylallyl)phenols and a 2-(3-arylbut-3-en-1-yl)phenol with diselenides under ambient air conditions has been outlined. This method allows for the synthesis of selenyl-dihydrobenzofurans and a chromane featuring a sterically hindered tetrasubstituted carbon center, demonstrated through 25 examples with yields reaching up to 98%. Initial mechanistic investigations suggest the likely participation of pivotal seleniranium cation species in regulating the reactivity. Abstract:Herein, a straightforward method for the synthesis of 2,5-disubstituted selenophenes <i>via</i> [2+2+1] cyclization of easily accessible terminal alkynes and elemental selenium has been developed. This reaction features high atom- and step-economy, excellent regioselectivity, good functional group tolerance and the use of stable and non-toxic selenium as a selenium source. A series of control experiments suggests that the reaction might undergo Glaser coupling reaction of two molecules of alkynes, followed by insertion of H<sub>2</sub>Se and subsequent cyclization. Moreover, the newly formed products can be further converted to diverse conjugated selenophene-based derivatives, demonstrating their potential applications in organic synthesis and materials science.

Abstract:An expedient strategy for the construction of trifluoromethylselenolated spiro[5.5]trienones/spiro[4.5]trienones through a cascade electrophilic trifluoromethylselenolation cyclization and dearomatization has been developed. This sequential process was induced by N‐trifluoromethylselenophthalimide (Phth‐SeCF3), which was an efficient electrophilic trifluoromethylselenolation reagent. This approach has the feature of mild conditions, broad substrate scope, and high functional group tolerance.
