Abstract:Optical singularity is pivotal in nature and has attracted wide interest from many disciplines nowadays, including optical communication, quantum optics, and biomedical imaging. Visualizing vortex lines formed by phase singularities and fabricating chiral nanostructures using the evolution of vortex lines are of great significance. In this paper, we introduce a promising method based on two-photon polymerization direct laser writing (2PP-DLW) to record the morphology of vortex lines generated by tightly focused multi-vortex beams (MVBs) at the nanoscale. Due to Gouy phase, the singularities of the MVBs rotate around the optical axis and move towards each other when approaching the focal plane. The propagation dynamics of vortex lines are recorded by 2PP-DLW, which explicitly exhibits the evolution of the phase singularities. Additionally, the MVBs are employed to fabricate stable three-dimensional chiral nanostructures due to the spiral-forward property of the vortex line. Because of the obvious chiral features of the manufactured nanostructures, a strong vortical dichroism is observed when excited by the light carrying orbital angular momentum. A number of applications can be envisioned with these chiral nanostructures, such as optical sensing, chiral separation, and information storage.

Abstract:The optical vortices carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) are commonly generated by modulating the available conventional light beam. This article shows that a micro-laser operates at the exceptional point (EP) of the non-Hermitian quantum system can directly emit vortex laser with well-defined OAM at will. Two gratings (the refractive index modulation and along azimuthal direction and the grating protruding from the micro-ring cavity) modulate the eigenmode of a micro-ring cavity to be a vortex laser mode. The phase-matching condition ensures that we can tune the OAM of the vortex beam to be arbitrary orders by changing the grating protruding from the micro-ring cavity while the system is kept at EP. The results are obtained by analytical analysis and confirmed by 3D full wave simulations.

Abstract:In a subject of ‘optical angular momentum (OAM) and optical vortex’, a twisted light (also referred to as a ‘spiralling optical field’) possesses a helical wavefront. Recently, a new advance in the twisted light is Rego et al's discovery of self-torque effect that can cause an intrinsic angular acceleration (DOI:10.1126/science.aaw9486). Such a self-torque effect gives rise to a time-varying optical orbital angular momentum. Then we believe that the time-dependent OAM of this vortex laser beam can lead to non-trivial evolution of the OAM state vector. It is expected that the information on the self-torque of a twisted optical field might be reflected in an extra phase shift and, based on this, we study the possible precession and nutation evolution of a quantized optical orbital angular momentum in such a twisted light. The relevant effects such as non-cyclic non-adiabatic ‘geometric’ phase and dynamical phase due to the angular momentum precession and nutation in the vortex beam are also included. An effective Hamiltonian characterizing the optical vortex precession and nutation is constructed and the time-dependent wave equation is solved. The result obtained in this paper could be utilized in treating the polarization evolution and possible mechanical (force) effect of twisted optical fields that can exhibit the self-torque phenomenon.
Spatial Multiplexing for Robust Optical Vortex Transmission with Optical Nonlinearity.

Abstract:Optical vortex beams, with phase singularity characterized by a topological charge (TC), introduces a new dimension for optical communication, quantum information, and optical light manipulation. However, the evaluation of TCs after beam propagation remains a substantial challenge, impeding practical applications. Here, we introduce vortices in lateral arrays (VOILA), a novel spatial multiplexing approach that enables simultaneous transmission of a lateral array of multiple vortices. Leveraging advanced learning techniques, VOILA effectively decodes TCs, even in the presence of strong optical nonlinearities simulated experimentally. Notably, our approach achieves substantial improvements in single-shot bandwidth, surpassing single-vortex scheme by several orders of magnitude. Furthermore, our system exhibits precise fractional TC recognition in both linear and nonlinear regimes, providing possibilities for high-bandwidth communication. The capabilities of VOILA promise transformative contributions to optical information processing and structured light research, with significant potential for advancements in diverse fields.

Abstract:Thirty years ago, Coullet et al. proposed that a special optical field exists in laser cavities bearing some analogy with the superfluid vortex. Since then, optical vortices have been widely studied, inspired by the hydrodynamics sharing similar mathematics. Akin to a fluid vortex with a central flow singularity, an optical vortex beam has a phase singularity with a certain topological charge, giving rise to a hollow intensity distribution. Such a beam with helical phase fronts and orbital angular momentum reveals a subtle connection between macroscopic physical optics and microscopic quantum optics. These amazing properties provide a new understanding of a wide range of optical and physical phenomena, including twisting photons, spin–orbital interactions, Bose–Einstein condensates, etc., while the associated technologies for manipulating optical vortices have become increasingly tunable and flexible. Hitherto, owing to these salient properties and optical manipulation technologies, tunable vortex beams have engendered tremendous advanced applications such as optical tweezers, high-order quantum entanglement, and nonlinear optics. This article reviews the recent progress in tunable vortex technologies along with their advanced applications.

Abstract:A Twist on the Capacity Crunch The rate at which data can be transmitted down optic fibers is approaching a limit because of nonlinear optical effects. Multiplexing allows data to be encoded in different modes of light such as polarization, wavelength, amplitude, and phase and to be sent down the fibers in parallel. Optical angular momentum (OAM) can provide another degree of freedom whereby the photons are given a well-defined twist or helicity. Bozinovic et al. (p. 1545 ) were able to transmit high-bandwidth data using OAM modes in long lengths of optical fibers, thus providing a possible route to get yet more capacity through optic fiber networks.

Abstract:Abstract Optical vortex is a promising candidate for capacity scaling in next-generation optical communications. The generation of multi-vortex beams is of great importance for vortex-based optical communications. Traditional approaches for generating multi-vortex beams are passive, unscalable and cumbersome. Here, we propose and demonstrate a multi-vortex laser, an active approach for creating multi-vortex beams directly at the source. By printing a specially-designed concentric-rings pattern on the cavity mirror, multi-vortex beams are generated directly from the laser. Spatially, the generated multi-vortex beams are decomposable and coaxial. Temporally, the multi-vortex beams can be simultaneously self-mode-locked, and each vortex component carries pulses with GHz-level repetition rate. Utilizing these distinct spatial-temporal characteristics, we demonstrate that the multi-vortex laser can be spatially and temporally encoded for data transmission, showing the potential of the developed multi-vortex laser in optical communications. The demonstrations may open up new perspectives for diverse applications enabled by the multi-vortex laser.

Abstract:We explore the propagation of structured vortex laser beams-shaped light carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM)-through complex multiple scattering medium. These structured vortex beams consist of a spin component, determined by the polarization of electromagnetic fields, and an orbital component, arising from their spatial structure. Although both spin and orbital angular momenta are conserved when shaped light propagates through a homogeneous, low-scattering medium, we investigate the conservation of these angular momenta during the propagation of Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beams with varying topological charges through a turbid multiple scattering environment. Our findings demonstrate that the OAM of the LG beam is preserved, exhibiting a distinct phase shift indicative of the 'twist of light' through the turbid medium. This preservation of OAM within such environments is confirmed by in-house developed Monte Carlo simulations, showing strong agreement with experimental studies. Our results suggest exciting prospects for leveraging OAM in sensing applications, opening avenues for groundbreaking fundamental research and practical applications in optical communications and remote sensing.
Twist-Related Speckle Variation in Graded-Index Multimode Fiber

Abstract:We theoretically investigate a twist-related speckle variation in a graded-index multimode fiber. The simulation results show that by increasing the offset splicing distance between a single-mode fiber and a multimode fiber, the speckle pattern tends to be more chaotic. Also, the fiber length is a crucial parameter that affects speckle distribution, and the speckle pattern varies periodically along the torsional-less multimode fiber. By exerting twist on a multimode fiber, the speckle pattern revolves. The rotational angle ascends linearly with a twist angle and this tendency is not affected by an offset distance and a fiber length. The theoretic results disclose a twist-related coupling in the graded-index multimode fiber, provide a novel twist sensing method and show potential application in a high-power laser and an imaging field.
Broadband Multichannel Optical Vortex Generators Via Patterned Double-Layer Reverse-Twist Liquid Crystal Polymer

Abstract:The capacity of an optical communication system can be greatly increased by using separate orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes as independent channels for signal transmission and encryption. At present, a transmissive OAM mode generator compatible with wavelength division multiplexing is being highly pursued. Here, we introduce a specific double-layer reverse-twist configuration into liquid crystal polymer (LCP) to overcome wavelength dependency. With this design, broadband-applicable OAM array generators are proposed and demonstrated. A Damman vortex grating and a Damman q-plate were encoded via photopatterning two subsequent LCP layers adopted with oppositely handed chiral dopants. Rectangular and hexagonal OAM arrays with mode conversion efficiencies exceeding 40.1% and 51.0% in the ranges of 530 to 930 nm, respectively, are presented. This provides a simple and broadband efficient strategy for beam shaping.

Abstract:The twisted stacking of two layered crystals has led to the emerging moiré physics as well as intriguing chiral phenomena such as chiral phonon and photon generation. In this work, we identified and theoretically formulated a non-trivial twist-enabled coupling mechanism in twisted bilayer photonic crystal (TBPC), which connects the bound state in the continuum (BIC) mode to the free space through the twist-enabled channel. Moreover, the radiation from TBPC hosts an optical vortex in the far field with both odd and even topological orders. We quantitatively analyzed the twist-enabled coupling between the BIC mode and other non-local modes in the photonic crystals, giving rise to radiation carrying orbital angular momentum. The optical vortex generation is robust against geometric disturbance, making TBPC a promising platform for well-defined vortex generation. As a result, TBPCs not only provide a new approach to manipulating the angular momentum of photons, but may also enable novel applications in integrated optical information processing and optical tweezers. Our work broadens the field of moiré photonics and paves the way toward the novel application of moiré physics.
Multiple and spectrally robust photonic magic angles in reconfigurable α-MoO3 trilayers

Abstract:The assembling of twisted stacks of van der Waals (vdW) materials had led to the discovery of a profusion of remarkable physical phenomena in recent years, as it provides a means to accurately control and harness electronic band structures. This has given birth to the so-called field of twistronics. An analogous concept has been developed for highly confined polaritons, or nanolight, in twisted bilayers of strongly anisotropic vdW materials, extending the field to the twistoptics realm. In this case, the emergence of a topological transition of the polaritonic dispersion at a given twist angle (photonic magic angle) results in the propagation of nanolight along one specific direction (canalization regime), holding promises for unprecedented control of the flow of energy at the nanoscale. However, there is a fundamental limitation in twistoptics that critically impedes such control: there is only one photonic magic angle (and thus canalization direction) in a twisted bilayer and it is fixed for each incident frequency. Here, we overcome this limitation by demonstrating the existence of multiple spectrally robust photonic magic angles in reconfigurable twisted vdW trilayers. As a result, we show that canalization of nanolight can be programmed at will along any desired in-plane direction in a single device, and, importantly, within broad spectral ranges of up to 70 cm-1. Our findings lay the foundation for robust and widely tunable twistoptics, opening the door for applications in nanophotonics where on-demand control of energy at the nanoscale is crucial, such as thermal management, nanoimaging or entanglement of quantum emitters.

Abstract:The introduction of spin and orbital angular momentum mode division multiplexing to existing wavelength division multiplexing will significantly enlarge the capacity of optical networks. Therefore, components compatible with the above techniques are in high demand. Here, a geometric phase combined a Dammann vortex grating, and a polarization grating is designed and encoded to a dual-twist reactive mesogen. It can generate a couple of vortex channel arrays highly efficiently in broadband. Meanwhile, orthogonal spins are spatially separated, facilitating spin identification. A vortex will recover to a Gaussian beam when it is diffracted to an order with opposite topological charge, which enables the detection of orbital angular momentum. It supplies a parallel and efficient way for decoupled spin and orbital angular momentum detection operating at the entire visible range, and the design may be extended to many other compatible optical communication components.

Abstract:Circularly polarized Gauss-Laguerre GL(0,0) and GL(0,1) laser beams that cross at their waists at a small angle are shown to generate a quasi-paraxial field that contains an axial line of circular polarization, a C line, surrounded by polarization ellipses whose major and minor axes generate multi-twist Mobius strips with twist numbers that increase with distance from the C point. These Mobius strips are interpreted in terms of Berry's phase for parallel transport of the ellipse axes around the C point.

Abstract:Optical twist has always been a hot spot in optics since it was discovered in 1993. Twisted beams can be generated by introducing the twist phase into partially coherent beams, or by introducing the twisting phase into anisotropic beams, whose spectral density and degree of coherence will spontaneously rotate during propagation. Unlike conventional beams, twisted beams have unique properties and can be used in many applications, such as optical communications, laser material processing, and particle manipulation. In this paper, we present a review of recent developments on phase studies of beams carrying twist.
Optical Vortex Braiding with Bessel Beams

Abstract:We propose the braiding of optical vortices in a laser beam with more than 2{\pi} rotation by superposing Bessel modes with a plane wave. We experimentally demonstrate this by using a Bessel-Gaussian beam and a coaxial Gaussian, and we present measurement of three complete braids. The amount of braiding is fundamentally limited only by the numerical aperture of the system and we discuss how braiding can be controlled experimentally for any number of vortices.

Twisted nonlinear optics in monolayer van der Waals crystals

Abstract:In addition to a plethora of emergent phenomena, the spatial topology of optical vortices enables an array of applications spanning communications to quantum photonics. Nonlinear optics is essential in this context, providing access to an infinitely large set of quantum states associated with the orbital angular momentum of light. Nevertheless, the realization of such processes have failed to keep pace with the ever-growing need to shrink the fundamental length-scale of photonic technologies to the nanometer regime6. Here, we push the boundaries of vortex nonlinear optics to the ultimate limits of material dimensionality. By exploiting second and third-order frequency-mixing processes in semiconducting monolayers, we demonstrate the independent manipulation of the wavelength, orbital angular momentum, and spatial distribution of vortex light-fields. Due to the atomically-thin nature of the host quantum material, this control spans a broad spectral bandwidth in a highly-integrable platform, unconstrained by the traditional limits of bulk nonlinear optical materials. Our work heralds a new avenue for ultra-compact and scalable hybrid nanotechnologies empowered by twisted nonlinear light-matter interactions in van der Waals quantum nanomaterials.

Abstract:Vortex crystals are geometric arrays of vortices found in various physics fields, owing their regular internal structure to mutual interactions within a spatially confined system. In optics, vortex crystals may form spontaneously within a nonlinear resonator but their usefulness is limited by the lack of control over their topology. On the other hand, programmable devices used in free space, like spatial light modulators, allow the design of nearly arbitrary vortex distributions but without any intrinsic dynamics. By combining non-Hermitian optics with on-demand topological transformations enabled by metasurfaces, we report a solid-state laser that generates vortex crystals with mutual interactions and actively-tunable topologies. We demonstrate 10x10 coherent vortex arrays with nonlocal coupling networks that are not limited to nearest-neighbor coupling but rather dictated by the crystal's topology. The vortex crystals exhibit sharp Bragg diffraction peaks, witnessing their coherence and high topological charge purity, which we resolve spatially over the whole lattice by introducing a parallelized analysis technique. By structuring light at the source, we enable complex transformations that allow to arbitrarily partition the orbital angular momentum inside the cavity and to heal topological charge defects, making these resonators a robust and versatile tool for advanced applications in topological optics.
