Abstract:The variations of the bound states of heteronuclear collision complexes in a static electric field are investigated. Using a prototype model, we engineer the interatomic interaction of the collision complex to have an l-wave bound state or quasibound state (virtual state for s wave) close to the threshold. The variation of such a state with electric field is calculated to find out whether it crosses the threshold and produces a zero-energy resonance. We identify the cases in which an electric-field-induced resonance can occur at low field. The prototype model is used to interpret the calculated results with realistic potentials for heteronuclear alkali-metal collision complexes. We also calculate the probability density of the low-energy scattering state and find that the short-range probability density can still be enhanced in the absence of electric-field-induced resonance.

Abstract:A new and simple model is developed to describe charge transfer, excitation and elastic process in low energy ion-atom collision in which the resonant transfer is considered as the dominant mechanism. The formulas are given in the secondary quantum representation. Abstract:The critical nuclear charge Z(c) of the two-electron atoms below which the ground state transforms into a shape resonance and the critical stability of the system around Z(c) have been well established. However, the behavior of the shape resonance below Z(c) is still a mystery. By employing the complex-scaling method using Hylleraas configuration-interaction basis functions, we trace the trajectory of the shape resonance from Z(c) down to a very small nuclear charge. It is shown that at specific values of Z far below Z(c) the resonance crosses over higher-lying one-electron thresholds, and when Z is decreased below 0.316, the shape resonance lies above the three-body breakup threshold. We finally show that the imaginary part of the resonance energy at small nuclear charges can be modeled by the dispersion relation with a high-order Pade approximant correction.

Abstract:An intriguing phenomenon in molecular collisions is the occurrence of scattering resonances, which originate from bound and quasi-bound states supported by the interaction potential at low collision energies. The resonance effects in the scattering behaviour are extraordinarily sensitive to the interaction potential, and their observation provides one of the most stringent tests for theoretical models. We present high-resolution measurements of state-resolved angular scattering distributions for inelastic collisions between Zeeman-decelerated C($^3P_1$) atoms and $\textit{para}$-H$_2$ molecules at collision energies ranging from 77 cm$^{-1}$ down to 0.5 cm$^{-1}$. Rapid variations in the angular distributions were observed that can be attributed to the consecutive reduction of contributing partial waves and effects of scattering resonances. The measurements showed excellent agreement with distributions predicted by $\textit{ab initio}$ quantum scattering calculations. However, discrepancies were found at specific collision energies, which most likely originate from an incorrectly predicted quasi-bound state. These observations provide exciting prospects for further high-precision and low-energy investigations of scattering processes that involve paramagnetic species.

Abstract:The inelastic electron scattering is one of the processes that must be understood in detail for the correct interpretation of astrophysical data. We suggest ab initio QED treatment of the inelastic scattering of quasi-free electrons on hydrogen-like ions with possible formation and subsequent decay of intermediate autoionizing states. We calculate the doubly differential cross sections for scattering on F 8+ , Ca 19+ and Kr 35+ in the range of energies where doubly excited 3l3l' states are involved. The energies and widths of these states are presented.

Abstract:The electron impact excitation and ionization processes are crucial for modeling the spectra of different astrophysical objects, from atmospheres of late-type stars to remnants of supernovae and up to the light emission from neutron star mergers, to name just a few. Despite their significance, however, little is known quantitatively about these processes for low- and medium-impact energies of, say, Ekin≲5000 eV of the free incident electron. To further explore the role of impact excitation, we here expanded Jac, the Jena Atomic Calculator, to the computation of distorted wave collision strengths for fine-structure-resolved, as well as configuration-averaged transitions. While we excluded the formation of dielectronic resonances, these tools can be readily applied for ions with a complex shell structure and by including the major relativistic contributions to these strengths. Detailed computations of the collision strengths are shown and explained for the impact excitation of lithium- and chlorine-like ions. When compared with other, well-correlated methods, good agreement was found, and hence, these tools will support studies of effective collision strengths for a wide range of electron impact energies, levels, and ionic charge states.

Abstract:The recombination of an electron with an (initially) hydrogen-like ion is investigated. The effect of the electron-electron interaction is treated rigorously to the first order in the parameter 1/Z and within the screening-potential approximation to higher orders in 1/Z, with Z being the nuclear charge number. The two-electron correction contains the dielectronic-recombination part, which contributes to the process not only under the resonance condition for the projectile energy but also in the regions far from resonances. The mechanism of the off-resonant dielectronic recombination is studied in detail.

Abstract:The full quantum molecular orbital close-coupling (QMOCC) method and optical potential method have been employed to study the nonradiative charge transfer and radiative decay processes for Li- colliding with H atoms. The cross sections of these processes are calculated rigorously in the energy range of 0.1-1.2 eV. It is found that rich and significant resonance structures appear at the same positions in the cross sections for both nonradiative charge transfer and radiative decay processes. The primary resonances are identified and studied by QMOCC (by fitting the eigenphase sum of the K-matrix) and complex absorbing potential (CAP) method. The resonance parameters calculated by CAP agree very well with those extracted from QMOCC calculations.

Abstract:The depletion process of LiH+ by H collision plays an important role in the evolution of the early universe and astrophysical processes, including the eventual charge-states, abundances of atomic and molecular species and ensuing astrochemistry. Here, a quantum dynamics study on the H + LiH+(v = 0, j = 0) → Li+ + H2 reaction is performed at the low collision energy range from 0.1 meV to 10 meV using the time-dependent wave packet method. A Feshbach resonance peak is observed near 0.8 meV collision energy on the total reaction probability curves. This resonance originates from the coupling with the v = 0, j = 1 energy level of the reactant LiH+, and it is dominated by the contributions of J = 0-4 partial waves. Another partial wave resonance is also found on the total integral cross section at 1.2 meV, which is closely connected to the opening of the J = 7 partial wave. The opening of the J = 7 partial wave generates a notable forward scattering peak, and the Feshbach resonance can promote both the forward and backward scatterings. Moreover, the total and product vibrational state-resolved rate coefficients for the temperature range of 1-100 K are also reported.

Abstract:Context. Many observed emission lines from space missions are due to highly charged H-like ions. An analysis of the lines provides information on the temperature, density, and chemical composition of plasmas. A wide range of atomic parameters, such as energy levels, radiative rates, and excitation rate coefficients are needed to achieve this goal. Aims. In this paper we report on calculations for energy levels, radiative rates, collision strengths, and effective collision strengths for transitions among the 36 lowest levels of the n <= 6 configurations of highly charged H-like ions with 13 <= Z <= 42. Methods. The widely used Flexible Atomic Code (FAC) is adopted for the calculation. Energy levels and radiative rates are calculated within the relativistic configuration-interaction method. Employing relativistic distorted-wave approximation, direct excitation collision strengths are calculated at eleven scattered electron energies E-f' = 0.001, 0.002, 0.005, 0.01, 0.02, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.5, where E-f' is in units of Z(2) rydbergs. Collision strengths at higher energies are estimated by interpolation/extrapolation using relativistic Be the form. Resonance contributions through the relevant He-like doubly excited n ' l ' n " l " configurations with n ' <= 7 and n " <= 75 are explicitly taken into account using the independent-process isolated-resonance approximation. Radiation damping effects are taken into account. Results. We present the radiative rates, oscillator strengths, and line strengths for all electric dipole (E1), magnetic dipole (M1), electric quadrupole (E2), magnetic quadrupole (M2), electric octupole (E3), and magnetic octupole (M3) transitions. Assuming a Maxwellian electron velocity distribution, we report effective collision strengths over a wide temperature range between 2 x 10(3) x Z(2) and 2 x 10(6) x Z(2) K. We believe that the present results are the most extensive and definitive atomic dataset to date for highly charged H-like ions.

Abstract:The ionization process due to collision of He2+ with C5+(1s) is investigated using a continuum-distorted-wave eikonal-initial-state approximation. Total, single-, and double-differential cross sections are presented for collision energies from 30 keV/u to 10 MeV/u. A good agreement is obtained between the current total cross section and the previous predictions. The ionization mechanism of electron capture to the projectile continuum (ECC) is found to be important in the lower collision energy range, whose contributions to the total cross section are evaluated to be approximately 12, 9, and 7% for the projectile energies of 125 keV/u,500 keV/u, and 1 MeV/u respectively. These large ECC contributions could be interpreted by the velocity matching between the projectile ion and the electron initially bound to the target.

Abstract:This paper reports on a study investigating the elastic scattering of hydrogen atoms in their metastable state (2S-2S) when subjected to electron impact, with a focus on the Coulomb effect within an energy range spanning from 511keV to 770keV . The analysis employs semi-relativistic wave functions to depict the hydrogen states. The validity of using Darwin wave functions is confirmed by ensuring that the condition Zα<<1 is met, where α represents the structure constant. Both incident and scattered free electrons are described using Dirac spinors. Notably, the semi-relativistic calculations converge with those of the non-relativistic case at low electron velocities. Additionally, in the presence of the Coulomb effect, the electron wave function is approximated by a Dirac function modulated by the confluent hypergeometric function. The paper presents the relativistic differential cross-section (RDCS) as a function of the final scattering angle for various energies of the incident electron, revealing intriguing insights into diffusion probabilities in specific directions. Moreover, the impact of the atomic number Z on the elastic scattering of hydrogen atoms and hydrogen-like ions by electron impact under the influence of the Coulomb effect is thoroughly examined.

Abstract:A theoretical study of the K-shell ionization of hydrogen-like ions, colliding with bare nuclei, is performed within the framework of the time-dependent Dirac equation. Special emphasis is placed on the ionization probability that is investigated as a function of impact parameter, collision energy and nuclear charge. To evaluate this probability in a wide range of collisional parameters we propose a simple analytical expression for the transition amplitude. This expression contains three fitting parameters that are determined from the numerical calculations, based on the adiabatic approximation. In contrast to previous studies, our analytical expression for the transition amplitude and ionization probability accounts for the full multipole expansion of the two-center potential and allows accurate description of nonsymmetric collisions of nuclei with different atomic numbers, $Z_1 \neq Z_2$. The calculations performed for both symmetric and asymmetric collisions indicate that the ionization probability is reduced when the difference between the atomic numbers of ions increases.

Abstract:We investigate high partial wave resonances in positron-hydrogen scattering using the momentum-space coupled-channels optical method above the H (n = 2) threshold. Resonances with angular momenta of L = 0-6 are reported. Ionization continuum and positronium formation channels are included via a complex equivalent local potential. Comparisons with the existing theoretical results are presented.
Theoretical Study of Inelastic Processes in Collisions of Y and Y$^+$ with Hydrogen Atom

Abstract:Utilizing a simplified quantum model approach, the low-energy inelastic collision processes between yttrium atoms (ions) and hydrogen atoms have been studied. Rate coefficients corresponding to the mutual neutralization, ion-pair formation, excitation, and de-excitation processes for the above collision systems have been provided in the temperature range of 1000-10000K. 3 ionic states and 73 covalent states are considered in calculations for the collisions of yttrium atoms with hydrogen atoms, which include 6 molecular symmetries and 4074 partial inelastic reaction processes. For the collisions of yttrium ions with hydrogen atoms, 1 ionic state and 116 covalent states are included, which related to 3 molecular symmetries and 13572 partial inelastic collision processes. It is found that the rate coefficients for the mutual neutralization process have a maximum at T = 6000K, which is an order of magnitude higher than those of other processes. Notably, the positions of optimal windows for the collisions of yttrium atoms and ions with hydrogen atoms are found near electronic binding energy -2eV (Y) and -4.4eV (Y$^+$), respectively. The scattering channels located in or near these optimal windows have intermediate-to-large rate coefficients (greater than $10^{-12}$ cm$^3$s$^{-1}$). The reported data should be useful in the study of non-local thermodynamic equilibrium modeling.

Abstract:Low-energy electron elastic scattering and impact ionization with hydrogenlike helium in Debye plasmas have been investigated by employing the exterior complex scaling method. The interactions between charged particles in the plasmas have been represented by Debye-Hückel potentials. The 1s-1s elastic collision strengths below the n=2 excitation threshold of He+ dominated by resonance structures are calculated for different screening lengths. As the screening strength increases, the resonance peaks studied [2(1,0)2+1Se,3Po,1De, and 2(0,1)2+1Po] exhibit blueshifts and then redshifts with a further increase of the screening strength, which results in dramatic changes of the collision strengths. It is found that these dynamic variation features of the resonances are related to the changes of energy levels of He+ in the screened potential and geometric configurations of resonances. Triple-differential-ionization cross sections in coplanar geometries at 6-Ry incident electron energy are also reported, significant changes are observed with varying screening length.

Abstract:We present, in the relativistic regime, the results of the study of elastic scattering of hydrogen atoms in its metastable state (2S-2S) by electron impact in the absence of a laser field. In the first calculation, semi-relativistic wave functions present hydrogen states. Dirac spinor describes the incident and scattered electrons. The condition Zα<<1 of using Darwin wave functions has been verified. The second approach uses the exact relativistic calculation of this process. The relativistic case calculations converge to those of the non-relativistic case within the low electron velocity range. In the high incoming energy range, the Coulomb effect and exchange effect are neglected. We present the relativistic differential cross-section RDCS as a function of the final scattering angle for different energies of the incident electron. The effect of atomic number Z for hydrogenoid atoms on the cross-section is examined.

Abstract:We apply quantum-defect theory to study low-energy ground-state atomic collisions, including aligned dipole interactions such as those induced by an electric field. Our results show that coupled even-l relative orbital angular momentum partial-wave channels exhibit shape resonance structures while odd-l channels do not.
