Abstract:As a painful scrutiny of 1980s, Drabble' s The Gates of Ivory shows how its writer creates moral focus in a fictional world embedded in a pluralistic, fragmented social reality, and how its characters search for a moral imperative and choose standpoints in a society without determinate criteria of validity. By juxtaposing the cynical, sophisticated realm of London against the dreaded world of the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot' s Cambodia, The Gates of Ivory reveals sense of disruption and uncertainty both in the East and the West, and thus becomes Drabble's moral efforts to refute postmodernism as an intellectual trend.

Abstract:The present paper argues that the British woman novelist Margaret Drabble applies the universal value of love in The Radiant Trilogy to fight against the alienated and discursive modern life and to replenish the exhausted rational world. The detailed text analysis supports that Drabble persuasively proves that love, with self-love, family love, philia, and Agape as its four variations, is the bond within communities. And in doing so, the construction of communities, within which members give mutual help and protection, becomes possible.

Abstract:The present paper challenges F.R.Leavis' view that Maggie's fate in The Mill on the Floss is due to George Eliot's immaturity.A contextual analysis of the background,the characters and the plot of the novel,with the focus on Maggie's clashes with the other characters,and the agony she has suffered in the pursuit of love,comes to the conclusion:Maggie's fate is closely related with the ongoing revolution;and the novel also reflects the clashes of the values the revolution has brought about,the structures of feeling prevailing in that society,and the writer's response to the commercial values emerging at that time.

Abstract:George Eliot's class affiliation has always been an important issue for Marxist critics. They have integrated Eliot's personal background,especially her middle-class identity,with the class analysis in The Mill on the Floss,which often leads to the conclusion of her alliance with the bourgeoisie. This paper,however,maintains that the novel not only discloses the middle-class hegemony in the spheres of politics,economics and cultural values,but also reveals Eliot's reflection on the limits of middle-class ideology as well as possible transgressions at the beginning of the Victorian Era. During the course of social transformation,Eliot and her novel stand ahead of the time for her understanding of cultural confrontations and interactivities.

Abstract:As one of the most outstanding female writers in post-war Britain, Doris Lessing, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, has a strong spirit of the times in her works. In order to further understand the characteristics and spirit of the times in Doris Lessing's novels, Doris Lessing's science fiction is taken as the research object in this study, through in-depth research on novel storytelling, philosophical psychology, thematic forms, etc., from the perspective of emotional psychology model, to deeply analyze the characteristics of psychological writing, mental health, and cultural identity in their science fiction. Doris Lessing's science fiction reflects the political, cultural, and historical background of the times, and on this basis, it reflects humanitarian concerns through characters' psychological writing and cultural identity. It is shown in the results of the study.

Abstract:The present study aims at studying women's labor in Elizabeth Gaskell's Mary Barton. For this purpose, it will start by tracing the writer's historical, social, and critical background, the milieu which shaped her perspectives and henceforth her work. Besides, it will discuss the writer’s response to the changes which occurred in her lifetime and at the same time served as a strong agent for change. The following part will shed light on Gaskell's contribution, reputation and writing career. Unlike her contemporaries, she presents the process of finding one's vocation as central to a women's life. Further, the study will examine women's labor in Mary Barton where the writer’s focuses on working-class society in which young women were drawn from the conventions governing feminine behavior, since they lived outside the boundaries of gentility. One of the problems addressed by the novel is the separation between classes and genders; Gaskell’s novel tends to bridge the boundaries between her characters and her readers and discourage the middle-class sense of complacent

Abstract:The loneliness and isolation experienced by older women have frequently been the focus of Brookner's writing. Fraud, one of her typical novels, provided a provocative perspective on age and gender. In light of a number of previous studies, this article aims to contribute to the study of feminist fiction that focuses on older women and to encourage more academic inquiry and study in this area. Based on the method of literature research and detailed reading of Fraud, the essay demonstrated the dual gaze that Anna, the protagonist of Fraud, experienced from both sexes, particularly from her mother and Lawrence Halliday, in accordance with the gaze theory. The gaze showed exterior control in Anna as well as how she internalized those gaze and molded herself into the object of others’ sight. Though she was observed by others and lived by their expectations for half of her life, Anna "counter-gazed" the overall look in her own unique way. She was liberated from the ongoing fraud thanks to her anorexia, dreams, straight look, and clothing design. Finally, the once-submissive Anna developed into an independent woman, speaking up forcefully for women to follow their own aspirations. By examining the gaze and anti-gaze that Anna experienced, the essay empowers all older women to recognize that new routes are open to them and inspires all women to confront the oppressive gaze and live their lives to the fullest.

Abstract:Through Margaret Atwood's works, the research explores the woman's struggle for survival as it defines her role as a woman in modern society. Her books deal with the theme of survival as shown by the female characters. Her books' major themes include failure and fertility, multiculturalism, nature vs humanity, the search for one's own identity, Southern Ontario Gothic, unlikely legends, urban versus rural, and women's empowerment. She has tried to include all of her experiences as a woman, a female, and an essayist because she is recognized as a women's movement author of the 1960s. Patriotism has a strong hold upon Atwood. Her sense of feminism, patriotism and both the Canadian and female characters is also connected to her feminism. Her fundamental compositions reveal her awareness of gender and struggle for existence. Her characters and their personalities are subtly revealed in her stories, which transport the reader to a previous memory through which the present is seen and experienced. Atwood controls women's comfortable and realistic interactions in her books, and she creates a self-portrait of women as artisans and legends who are reliable to their own internal paths. She paints a portrait of a legendary figure whose persona doesn't require depth or tenderness. The protagonists and the novels have a remarkable relationship that allows for the recording of their emotions and dreams.

Abstract:Contemporary literature study and criticism in the past 30 years since the reform and opening up has been progressing synchronously with literature,drawing on historical experiences and lessons,and echoing the realistic need.But there is also an ideological fickleness caused by the desire to surpass.As a result,the technical criticism on methodology detaches itself from the aesthetic value of text,and too much grandiose but impractical cultural criticism has rendered literature noumenon frothy and content-free.The long-term depression deprives researchers of the positive living ideal and the courage to face reality,thus the survival strategies are abused as the truth of literature.All these malpractices are serious enough for us to ponder over.

Abstract:The study of Gone with the Wind has mainly concerned such aspects as the historical background of the American Civil War, the relationship between slave owners and slaves, Scarlett' s remarkable personality, and the conflicts between north and south cultures. Many more people read it as a love story. This paper argues that home consciousness is a persistent theme throughout the book which not only enriches the image of the character, but also guarantees the novel a compact and united structure. It is also the tie that connects Scarlett with the south tradition. It is just this strong home consciousness that enables the heroine to fight continuously and leads a steadfast life in the turbulent times. The study of this theme not only deepens the study of the novel, but also awakens peoples love for home, so the study of this theme is meaningful and rewarding.

Abstract:National conscience, as a cultural proposition, is a cognitive process that elicits the common code of conduct based on national and cultural identity. With a focus on The Vanity Fair, the essay discusses Rebecca Sharp's act of discarding Dr. Johnson's dictionary. Reading A Dictionary of the English Language as a symbol of national knowledge, culture and even morality, the paper argues for the function of English language in building up the national consciousness of Britain distinct from other nations. In Thackeray's description, British people is unconfident of national language and culture and the public media is featured with hypocrisy and the loss of conscience. In his novel, Thackeray intends to urge his fellow countrymen to adopt a homogenous language and culture with national conscience.

Culture, Power and the Social Construction of Morality: moral voices of Chinese students

Abstract:This study challenges Carol Gilligan's gendered interpretation of moral voice by examining the ways in which moral problems and responses were socially constructed in the contexts of power relations based not on gender, but culture. In‐depth interviews were conducted with 30 mainland Chinese men and women studying in the United States regarding their lived experiences of moral conflict and choice. Out of these interviews, the problem of power emerged as a central moral concern in Chinese students’ relationships with Americans. These relationships were characterised by a dilemma of voice: the tension between an ethical imperative to keep silent to preserve vital yet hurtful power relations, and the moral need to speak out in defence of one's dignity and integrity. Students’ responses to this dilemma varied with the nature of the power relationship itself: enjoining students to endure silently those abusive relationships which they felt powerless to change or exit, to abandon those which they could afford to leave, and to protest against those which they felt capable of challenging or even transforming. These findings underscore the situational nature of moral conflict and suggest that it is power‐‐whether rooted in gender or culture‐‐which is the critical dimension of human relationships for the interpretation of moral voice.

Abstract:In the decades since The Ordinary World came out, scholars in the literary world have never stopped exploring it, because it is a masterpiece that has inspired generations of young people to struggle with difficulties in their life. Firstly, this paper selects the character of Sun Shaoping in the book as an example. Then, on the basis of author Lu Yao's background and several characters in the book who are closely related to Sun Shaoping, the paper analysed the reasons for the creation of character to deeply investigate what kind of factors and environments contribute to the formation of this self-awareness. Finally, all the efforts is to reveal the conflicts and self-awareness of character’s inner world.

Abstract:Existing criticism of classical short fiction is often confined to the surface text. This may be attributable, among other things, to the following reasons: (1) failing to read the text "closely", (2) overlooking the interaction among different elements of the text, (3) overlooking the relation between the text and its context, (4) overlooking the relation between the text under discussion and other relevant texts. In order to redress these deficiencies, this essay advocates the method of "overall close reading," focusing on three exemplary cases: Mansfield’s "Revelations", Chopin’s "Desirée’s Baby" and Crane’s "An Episode of War". The present study aims to show that through "overall close reading", there may be revealed a hidden subtext which typically forms a sharp contrast with the surface text.

Abstract:Theodore Dreiser’s Sister Carrie (1900) suffered sharp criticism at the very moment of their appearance. Most critics and readers pointed out he depicted something amoral, especially on sexual amorality. Yet, with the development of feminism, a few years later Sister Carrie was appraised as the model of ‘new woman’ of the late 19th century. In the light of Freudian thought, the paper will not only draw attention to the confrontation between desire and morality but also to the effects of human inner mind in the external world in attempt to explore the permanent factors that influence human’s actions.
