Abstract:Multibeam system is a core part for wireless concurrent communication and massive multiple-input–mulitple-output (MIMO) applications. Traditional concurrent communication techniques, like phased-array or digital beam-forming system, suffer from massive RF frontends or power-hungry high-speed analog-to-digital converters, which makes them complex and expensive in fabrication. Inheriting the advantages of reflectarray and passive multibeam system, we reported in this letter a novel and cost-effective concept of steerable simultaneous multibeam antenna (SMBA). New features and the practicality of it are fully verified with theoretical analysis and experimental implementation of a prototype working at 7 GHz with 300 MHz bandwidth. With multiple beams steered simultaneously, the SMBA can eliminate the crossover regions between adjacent beams of passive multibeam antenna. Experimental results indicate its potential in the design of diverse concurrent communication systems such as base stations and point-to-point links.

Abstract:A new pattern reconfigurable microstrip antenna is presented to demonstrate the capability of beam steering by controlling MEMS switches on/off. Simulated and measured results show that two sets of connection states and four switchable directional quasi-conical beams in different quadrants can be obtained at 8 GHz and the return losses are less than -10 dB. One set of connections provides two quasiconical half power beams in the first and third quadrants of the upper half space. The second set of connections provides two quasi-conical half power beams in the second and fourth quadrants of the upper half space.

Abstract:In recent years, reconfigurable metasurfaces have become research hotspots since they can manipulate electromagnetic waves dynamically and flexibly. The realisation of cost-effective and energy-efficient wireless communications via reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) is attractive in various application scenerios. In this work, a +45∘ -polarized dual-band reconfigurable metasurface with beam steering ability is proposed to combat signal attenuation in wireless communications. By varying the bias voltages of the integrated varactors in the specially designed meta-atom, 0 and π phase responses have been excited around both 2.4 and 5.8 GHz. Taking advantage of this unique feature, we proposed a one-bit coding RIS device which provides dual-band application. To validate the proposed concepts, a reconfigurable metasurface composed of 16 × 16 elements was fabricated and measured. The measurement results agree well with the simulation, so the proposed prototype is a promising candidate for future intelligent communications.

Abstract:Combining the advantages of the phase tunability provided by active frequency selective surfaces (FSSs) and the beam-steering scheme used in conventional 1-D Fresnel-zone-plate (FZP) antennas, we report in this communication a 2-D beam-steering FZP antenna that needs only 180° phase tunability. Compared with transmit arrays, while the substrate layers are reduced by a half, a phase compensation strategy is used to enhance antenna specifications. To verify the proposed approach, a radome implemented based on an active, reconfigurable FSS was designed, simulated, and experimentally implemented. With a simple three-layer structure, the implemented FZP antenna works within an ultrawide bandwidth ranging from 5 to 6.3 GHz, corresponding to a 21% relative bandwidth. With a gain up to 19.3 dBi, the scanning range reaches ±45° in both horizontal and vertical planes. This cost-effective, simple-structured antenna can be potentially used in diverse RF and microwave applications.

Abstract:The rapid development of wireless technology has heightened the requirement for antenna performance. Traditional antennas, characterized by their static performance, are no longer sufficient to accommodate the dynamic requirements of modern wireless systems. The advent of reconfigurable antennas has opened new horizons for unleashing the full potential of wireless communication systems. These antennas are versatile and can switch various performance modes in a simple yet ingenious structure. Based on the cutting‐edge research, this paper deeply explores their core design principles, the latest breakthroughs, and the ingenious methods. Through an in‐depth analysis of a multitude of reconfigurable antenna design cases, existing design methods are categorized into four categories: electronic and optical switches, structural physical change, smart materials, and bistable composites. Each category is subjected to a meticulous dissection, revealing the underlying design mechanisms, highlighting innovativeness, and discussing both the strengths and limitations. Furthermore, by conducting a comprehensive comparative analysis, this paper concludes the forthcoming challenges and prospective trajectories for this research domain. Therefore, this paper can serve as a valuable reference for researchers seeking to deepen their understanding and application of various reconfiguration methods in the design of reconfigurable antennas, guiding them toward the forefront of antenna technology innovation.

Abstract:In this article, a beamwidth and pattern-steering reconfigurable active integrated antenna (AiA) is proposed and studied in 2.4 GHz band. Two low noise amplifiers (LNAs) are applied as the switches to control the beamwidth in this work. Owing to their high ON/OFF state transmission ratio, using amplifiers as switches is an economic and easy way to realize excellent reconfigurability. An aperture coupled metasurface contributes to a unified radiation pattern and reflection coefficient. To highlight the applications, a pair of switchable phase shifters is cascaded to the amplifiers to realize beam steering. The coupling scheme of the AiA is illustrated, which exhibits a quasi-duplex communication function. Power compression and third-order intermodulation of the AiA are discussed and measured. The impedance bandwidth fully covers the range from 2.2 to 2.7 GHz. The measured tunable range of the beamwidth is from 111° to 32°, and the beam steering angle is from − 39° to 36° in the E-plane. The measured peak system gain is 14.7 dBi, while under the passive mode, it is 6.8 dBi. The peak system efficiency is measured up to 220% for the active mode and 80% for the passive mode. The peak power added efficiency (PAE) of the active mode is 40.4%. The measurement results agree well with the simulation.

Abstract:In this paper, we experimentally realized a steering antenna using a type of active metamaterial with tunable refractive index. The metamaterial is realized by periodically printed subwavelength metallic resonant patterns with embedded microwave varactors. The effective refractive index can be controlled by low direct-current (dc) bias voltage applied to the varactors. In-phase electromagnetic waves transmitting in different zones of such metamaterial slab experience different phase delays, and, consequently, the output direction of the transmitted wave can be steered with progressive phase shift along the interface. This antenna has a simple structure, is very easy to configure the beam direction, and has a low cost. Compared with conventional phased-array antennas, the radome approach has more flexibility to operate with different feeding antennas for various applications.

Abstract:Diffractive antennas implement steerable beams based on reconfigurable diffractive devices such as Fresnel zone plates (FZPs). Compared with phased array systems, FZP antennas have concise architectures and simple beam-steering mechanisms. In this Letter, the authors demonstrate an FZP-based reconfigurable diffractive antenna with three degrees of freedom (3DoF), i.e. simultaneous reconfigurable steering angle, beamwidth and operating frequency. Such a highly reconfigurable antenna is implemented based on a single-layer metasurface mounted with microwave varactors. The principle behind this 3DoF reconfiguration is the electrically induced transparency and opacity switched by different sets of binary voltages applied across the varactors. Experimental measurements validated the proposed approach.

Abstract:The design and experiment of an electronically reconfigurable bidirectional spatially-fed array are presented, which combines the functionalities of reconfigurable transmitarray (TA), reflectarray (RA), and transmit-reflect array (TRA). First, we demonstrate a novel bidirectional unit cell composed of a tunable resonant layer between a pair of orthogonally oriented metal gratings. Two positive-intrinsic-negative (PIN) diodes are integrated into the tunable resonant layer to achieve the 1-bit phase resolution in either transmission or reflection mode. Based on the proposed unit cell, a 16 $\times16$ -element array arranged in a square grid, which can be controlled independently by a field programmable gate array (FPGA)-based digital control circuit, is excited by a linearly-polarized horn to show the beam steering ability of reconfigurable TA and RA. To realize TRA function integration with the bidirectional beam independent steering simultaneously, the method based on superposition of the aperture fields (SAF) on the aperture is used. In SAF design, the entire aperture is divided into transmission and reflection modes co-existing, and the arrangement and phase distribution are optimized by particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm to achieve minimum sidelobe levels (SLLs) and peak gain of bidirectional beam. The measured results of the prototype demonstrate that the antenna can steer bidirectional beam both in simultaneous and time division operating modes, which is not reported to the best of the authors’ knowledge. Our proposed method opens a new avenue for the design of high-performance multifunctional reconfigurable antenna systems.

Abstract:With the current state of affairs in the development of antennas in the wireless communication field, the need of compact multiband, multifunctional and cost effective antenna is increased. The study of reconfigurable antennas has made great progress in recent years. In this article, a multi-purpose reconfigurable antenna capable of dual-polarization and operating nine modes corresponding to nine steerable beam directions is presented. This antenna consists of two layers. The bottom layer is the aperture-coupled driven patch, and the top layer is the parasitic layer with a grid of 3 × 3 patches. The switching network lies on the upper surface of the parasitic layer thereby it is separated from the driven element. The aperture-coupled driven patch is integrated with switches with ON/OFF status to change the direction of the aperture to realize the dual-polarization. Two polarizations are vertical to each other. Patches of the parasitic layer are electrically-small square-shaped metallic, these patches are connected by PIN diode switches. These switches are controled by DC bias lines and with ON/OFF status to change the geometry of parasitic surface, which in turn changes the current distribution on the antenna, thus provides the reconfigurability in beam-steering. The antenna operates in the frequency band 4.1-4.6 GHz in each mode of operation, in the meantime, the polarization can be changed via switches with ON/OFF status. The simulated impedance and radiation pattern results an average of ~ 6 dB realized gain in all modes of operation. It has nine steerable beam directions in θ ∈ {-30°, 0°, 30°}; φ ∈ {0°, 45°, 90°, 135°}.

Abstract:Pattern reconfigurable antennas with multiple switchable beams can effectively improve the multi-path effects and enhance channel quality. Thus, they are considered one of the key technologies for intelligent wireless communication, satellite systems, and IoT applications [1–3]. Most traditional pattern reconfigurable works realize beam switching by loading multiple reflectors or directors around the radiation source. However, this method usually suffers from large dimensions, limited radiation modes, and complex structures. Thus, for space-limited scenarios, designing a compact pattern reconfigurable single antenna with flexible and multifunctional beam-switching capacity is highly demanded.

Abstract:The integration and use of switches in microstrip patch reconfigurable antennas is investigated to get pattern forming. We also propose a reflector shaping method by connecting switches between patch elements, owing to its discrete structure. Experimental results demonstrate that it is effective. Furthermore, since the structure can be regarded as a quasi-Yagi array, the maximum gain occurs at the end-fire.

Abstract:A novel planar switchable antenna system for wireless communication is presented. This switchable antenna system provides multiple radiation patterns by controlling the status of switches. The antenna system has only one element connected to the RF port without the need for RF switches or phase shifter in the direct RF signal path. The active element is surrounded by parasitic elements symmetrically. In order to realize the switch of different radiation pattern, a control circuit is developed accordingly to control the maximum direction of the pattern. An experimental antenna system is fabricated and tested.

Abstract:A pattern reconfigurable antenna based on switchable spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs) transmission line is experimentally presented. There are two fundamental modes on traditional SSPPs transmission line, the odd mode and the even mode. In this paper, we propose the switching of fundamental modes transmitted on the SSPPs transmission line by controlling the status of three PIN diodes. As a consequence, the proposed antenna can provide a broadside radiation beam (in the even mode) and an endfire radiation beam (in the odd mode). The measured results show that for broadside radiation, the main lobe direction ranges from 56° to 84° within the operating band ( $\vert {S} _{11}\vert < -10$ dB) of 4.85–5.25 GHz, while for the endfire radiation, the main lobe points almost constantly to $x$ -direction within 4.85–5.25 GHz. By switching the antenna working state, the proposed antenna can realize almost 84° beam switching at 4.85 GHz. The pattern reconfigurability of this antenna with favorable performance characteristics, such as high gain, frequency scanning, low profile, and wide-angle beam switching, makes it an ideal candidate for many WLAN and satellite communication applications.

Abstract:A novel planar switched parasitic array antenna has been proposed for wireless communication. Compared with conventional switched array antennas, this array antenna has more compact planar structure and steered conical elevation pattern. Simulation and measurement have been carried out to validate the design. PIN diodes and micro-controller unit (MCU) are used to implement a beam switching system. Experimental results show that this antenna has the capacity to provide beam switching.

Abstract:A novel wideband antenna with two reconfigurable radiating patterns is presented. The proposed antenna is made of two quasi-Yagi antennas, with their radiations directing to opposite directions, respectively. The two elements are fed with one coaxial cable from the back of the dielectric substrate. A PIN diode is embedded between the feeding line of each element and coaxial cable to regulate the radiating pattern. Besides, reflectors are set under the arms of the driver dipole to regulate the radiating direction and avoid interference with radio components. Simulated results show that the proposed antenna can work at 5.00 GHz to 5.65 GHz, the main beams of the two modes direct to±55° respectively, and the 3dB beam-widths of main beams are all 110°. The gain within the operating bandwidth is 7.3 dB to 7.7 dB. The main beam direction of the proposed antenna can be regulated by the size of reflectors. The antenna was fabricated and measured. The measurement results are good with the simulation results. The antenna presented can be used in intelligent communication systems.

Abstract:The rapid development of wireless devices now requires antennas to be highly flexible more than ever. In this work, we demonstrate a reconfigurable antenna with beam steering based on Fresnel Zone Plate (FZP). The FZP-based antenna is implemented on a metasurface mounted with microwave PIN diodes. The principle behind reconfiguration is the electrically induced transparency and opacity switched by voltages applied across the diodes, thus adjusting the strip distribution of FZP. Since it can achieve transmitted and reflected beam steering at two different frequencies at the same time, it will expand the functions of traditional phased array antennas, which has a wide application in various scenarios.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel beam-steerable antenna based on a dual-reconfiguration technique is presented. The proposed antenna with a double-layer structure operates at 3.65GHz. On the lower layer, a coplanar parasitic structure whose operational principle is similar to a quasi-Yagi strip structure is used as the driven element to supply the first-level reconfiguration. The parasitic upper layer which adopts a pixel surface is implemented for the second-level reconfiguration. By switching four PIN diodes on the lower layer and changing the pixel surface of the upper layer, the proposed antenna is capable of realizing beam steering (=0 degrees, +/- 10 degrees, +/- 20 degrees, +/- 30 degrees, +/- 40 degrees, +/- 50 degrees, and +/- 60 degrees) with a gain fluctuation lower than 1dB. A multi-objective genetic algorithm and a co-simulation strategy are used to optimize the operating state of the pixel surface. The antenna is optimized, fabricated and measured. The measured results agree well with the simulated ones, and they validate the powerful reconfigurable ability of the proposed antenna.
