Abstract:X-ray computed tomography (CT) as one of the most common medical imaging tools is used frequently in hospital. Clinical CT contrast agents are based on iodine-containing small molecules due to the high X-ray attenuation of iodine. However, several drawbacks limited their applications. Here, we report a potential CT contrast agent based on dendrimer-stabilized Bi2S3 nanoparticles (Bi2S3 DSNPs) that may overcome those limitations. In this work, Bi2S3 DSNPs were prepared using ethylenediamine core poly ( amidoamine) ( PAMAM) dendrimers of generation 4 terminated with hydroxyl groups (G4. NGlyOH) as stabilizers. The formed Bi2S3 DSNPs were characterized by UV-vis spectrometry, transmission electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectroscopy. By varying the molar ratio of bismuth salt to G4. NG'yOH, we synthesized Bi2S3 DSNPs with a size range of 7 similar to 9 nm. The as-prepared Bi2S3 DSNPs were stable under a dark condition. X-ray absorption coefficient measurements show that the attenuation of Bi2S3 DSNPs is much higher than that of the current iodine-based CT contrast agent at the same molar concentration of the active element (bismuth versus iodine). These results suggest that Bi2S3 DSNPs are a promising contrast agent in CT imaging applications.
