Abstract:Urban wetland is recognized as one of the most important elements of urban ecosystem. However, human activities and urban sprawl is increasingly altering patterns and functions of urban wetlands. In this paper, wetland dynamics and its drive forces in Wuhan, China were analyzed quantitatively based on Landsat TM/ETM+ remote sensed imageries at five periods during 1987-2007. The results show the area of urban wetlands decreased sharply from 292769.6ha in 1987 to 130107.2ha in 2007. In particular, wetland area reduced much more during the period 1996-2001 than other periods. The fractal dimensions of wetlands decreased while fragmentation degree increased during the research period. Our results also demonstrate that wetland changes were mainly influenced by increasing human activities, including farmland cultivating, urban sprawling and lake filling for forest. The influences of urbanizing decreased from central urban area to rural area while the effects of farmland cultivating increased. In order to enhance wetland protection and management for sustainable development, considerable strategies should be made by incorporating spatial differences of drive forces and wetland patterns, including establishing wetland reserves in rural areas, controlling urban and farmland sprawling to wetlands on the outskirts and developing reasonable urban wetland system in central areas.
