Abstract:Active and durable electrocatalysts for methanol oxidation reaction are of critical importance to the commercial viability of direct methanol fuel cell technology. Unfortunately, current methanol oxidation electrocatalysts fall far short of expectations and suffer from rapid activity degradation. Here we report platinum–nickel hydroxide–graphene ternary hybrids as a possible solution to this long-standing issue. The incorporation of highly defective nickel hydroxide nanostructures is believed to play the decisive role in promoting the dissociative adsorption of water molecules and subsequent oxidative removal of carbonaceous poison on neighbouring platinum sites. As a result, the ternary hybrids exhibit exceptional activity and durability towards efficient methanol oxidation reaction. Under periodic reactivations, the hybrids can endure at least 500,000 s with negligible activity loss, which is, to the best of our knowledge, two to three orders of magnitude longer than all available electrocatalysts.
Study on Electrodeposition of Bimetallic Microparticle Electrode and Its Electrocatalytic Oxidation for Methanol

Abstract:An original Pt-RU bimetallic microparticle elelctrode was prepared by cyclic voltammetry at nichrome substrate. SEM results revealed that the deposits were composed of spherical granular microparticles. Cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry were used to characterize its electrochemical behavior. The results indicated that the Pt-Ru microparticle electrode improved the properties of the substrate material and enhanced the catalytic activity for methanol electrooxidation. Under the same conditions, the electrocatalytic ability of the electrode was higher than that of the pure Pt electrode. The cost for preparing the electrode was greatly decreased, the procedure was much simplified., no pollution and no contamination for the environment. The Pt-Ru microparticle electrode loaded on nichrome substrate showed an improved performance towards methanol oxidation and was likely a potential electrocatalyst towards methanol electrooxidation.

Abstract:The sulfated vanadia-zirconia SO42-/V2O5-ZrO2 catalyst, prepared by an impregnation method and calcined at various temperatures, was found to have a high catalytic activity for methanol oxidation to dimethoxymethane in a fixed bed reactor and a batch autoclave using O-2 as the oxidant due to the crystalline V2O5 dispersed on the surface as redox active sites, as well as stronger acidic sites.

Abstract:Pt nanoparticles well dispersed on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared for high-performance electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol in both acidic and alkaline media via the co-electrodeposition/stripping (CS) protocol, namely, co-electrodeposition of Pt and Cu followed by electrochemical stripping of Cu, as examined by cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The Pt catalyst prepared by the CS protocol on MWCNTs (Ptcs/MWCNTs/Au) exhibited a specific electrocatalytic activity of 519 and 2210Ag−1 toward cyclic voltammetric electrooxidation (50mVs−1) of methanol in 0.5M CH3OH+0.5M H2SO4 and 0.5M CH3OH+1.0M NaOH media, respectively, which are larger than those prepared by conventional electrodeposition from chloroplatinic acid on Au and MWCNTs/Au, as well as that by a CS protocol on Au. The Ptcs/MWCNTs/Au electrode also possessed the highest stability, which maintained 91% and 90% of its initial catalytic activity after 120-cycle CV in 0.5M CH3OH+0.5M H2SO4 and 0.5M CH3OH+1.0M NaOH, respectively. The electrode kinetics of methanol oxidation is also briefly discussed. The nanosubstrate-based CS protocol is simple, convenient and efficient, which is expected to find wide applications in film electrochemistry and electrocatalysis.

Abstract:Iron and vanadate modified phosphotungstate was fabricated by Fe salt and vanadate incorporating into H3PW12O40. Its morphology, composition and structure were determined by XRD, SEM, TEM, FT-IR and XPS. The catalytic performance of the prepared composite for selective oxidation of methanol to dimethoxymethane using molecular oxygen as oxidant was evaluated. A detail study on influence of key reaction parameters, involving the calcination temperature of the catalyst during the preparation, reaction time, temperature and pressure, and flow rate of O-2, methanol and N-2 on the reactivity and selectivity was optimized. The results showed that the composite was active and highly selective for methanol oxidation, giving ca. 70% conversion of methanol and > 96% selectivity to DMM. The adsorption behaviour of methanol on surface of the catalyst or various components composed of the catalyst was investigated by in situ DRIFTS technique to identify the active sites and further considering reaction mechanism. Moreover, the operating lifetime and stability of the catalyst was also discussed.

Abstract:MXene is a growing class of two-dimensional layered material that has been showed promising application in various energy storage and conversion technologies, due to its unique electrical, mechanical, surface and electrocatalytic properties. One of the promising applications of MXene is, its definite role as durable catalyst support material, for fuel cell anodic/cathodic reactions. Very recently, MXene supported catalysts have been identified as potential and stable support for various Pt and non-Pt metals designed for cathodic oxygen reduction reaction and it has been proved as excellent material to enhance the oxygen reduction kinetics. This had motivated the researchers to explore MXene as catalyst support for anodic methanol/ethanol oxidation reactions. In this review, recent developments in experimental and theoretical research on MXene-based electrocatalysts for the methanol/ethanol oxidation reactions are examined and overviewed. After careful examination of the available literature, we presume that MXene supported electrocatalyst showed enhanced methanol/ethanol oxidation kinetics and therefore believed to have tremendous opportunities as durable catalyst support for alcohol fuel cells. However, researchers also consider several limitations and challenges that must be addressed for efficient application of MXenes as catalyst supports. Therefore, current research on MXenes with respect to the methanol/ethanol oxidation are discussed, with a focus on synthesis strategies, oxidation kinetics, and factors responsible for enhancing the electrocatalytic performance. Several strategies for the further development of efficient and durable MXene supported catalysts are also proposed.

Abstract:We study the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) on very rough Pt surfaces. We develop an electrodeposition method yielding Pt electrodes with high roughness factors (R f > 80), controlled by varying the electrodeposition time or by polymer codeposition. These rough electrodes exhibit a linear MOR response at potentials up to 1.4 V versus RHE, in contrast to the hysteretic behavior reported in numerous prior studies. This effect is found in both acidic and basic electrolytes. Studies show that increased surface roughness increases the surface concentration of methanol, thereby inhibiting the formation of Pt oxides at higher potentials, which are known to poison the subsequent methanol oxidation activity. The potential at which methanol oxidation poisoning occurs is found to be logarithmically dependent on the bulk methanol concentration, with varying slopes in acidic and basic media. The origin of different sensitivities in basic relative to acidic electrolytes is found to be the result of different reaction orders with respect to methanol. This study provides methods to enhance the rate of organic molecule oxidation at electrode surfaces that can be applied to both electrosynthesis and direct methanol fuel cell applications.

Abstract:The study on direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) has lasted around 70 years since its first investigation in the early 1950s. Though enormous effort has been devoted in this field, it is still far from commercialization. The methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) as a semi‐reaction of DMFCs is the bottleneck reaction that restricts the overall performance of DMFCs. To date, there are intense debates on the complex 6‐electron reaction, but barely any reviews have systematically discussed this topic. To this end, we summarized the controversies and progress regarding the electrocatalytic mechanisms, performance evaluations as well as the design science toward MOR electrocatalysts. This review also provides a comprehensive introduction on the recent development of emerging MOR electrocatalysts with a focus on the innovation of the alloy, core‐shell structure, heterostructure and single‐atom catalysts. Preparation and Influence of Performance of Anodic Catalysts for Direct Methanol Fuel Cell

Abstract:This research aims at increasing the utilization of platinum-ruthenium alloy (Pt-Ru) catalysts and thus lowering the catalyst loading in anodes for methanol electrooxidation. The direct methanol fuel cell’s (DMFC) anodic catalysts, Pt-Ru/C, were prepared by chemical reduction with a reducing agent added in two kinds of solutions under different circumstances. The reducing agent was added in hot solution with the protection of inert gases or just air, and in cold solution with inert gases. The catalysts were treated at different temperatures. Their performance was tested by cyclic voltammetry and potentiostatic polarization by utilizing their inherent powder microelectrode in 0.5 mol/L CH3OH and 0.5 mol/LH2SO4 solution. The structures and micro-surface images of the catalysts were determined and observed by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, respectively. The catalyst prepared in inert gases showed a better catalytic performance for methanol electrooxidation than that prepared in air. It resulted in a more homogeneous distribution of the Pt-Ru alloy in carbon. Its size is small, only about 4.5 nm. The catalytic performance is affected by the order of the reducing agent added. The performance of the catalyst prepared by adding the reductant at constant temperature of the solution is better than that prepared by adding it in the solution at 0°C and then heating it up to the reducing temperature. The structure of the catalyst was modified, and there was an increase in the conversion of ruthenium into the alloyed state and an increase in particle size with the ascension of heat treatment temperature. In addition, the stability of the catalyst was improved after heat treatment.
Effect of Preparation Conditions on the Catalytic Performances of PtRu/CAs Catalysts for Methanol Electro-oxidation

Abstract:The impregnation method was applied to prepare the platinum-ruthenium (Pt-Ru) catalysts in which mass fraction of Pt is 15%, and the atomic ratio of Pt and Ru is 2:1. The properties of the catalysts prepared with varied impregnated mediums (acetic acid, sodium acetate and water) were studied in detail. The X-ray diffractometry(XRD) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM) were used to observe the surface morphology of above Pt-Ru catalysts. The energy dispersive X-ray spectrum (EDS) was used to analyze the composition of the catalysts. The electrochemical performance of the catalysts was examined by cyclic voltammetry with a glassy carbon working electrode in a solution of 1. 0 mol/L CH3OH and 0. 5 mol/L H2SO4. In all the above catalysts, the catalyst prepared with the metal precursor impregnated in CH3COOH and carbon aerogels as a carrier has the highest electrocatalytic activity. The peak current density gets to 38. 24 mA/cm(2), which is much higher than the rest of the catalysts prepared under other conditions in this paper.

Abstract:This review examines research advancements in anti-CO poisoning during the electrocatalytic methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). The article details catalyst design and optimization strategies, experimental studies, and control measures. An in-depth analysis of intermediate product generation mechanisms, factors affecting anti-CO poisoning, and experimental studies supports MOR development. Anti-CO poisoning strategies encompass catalyst selection, reaction condition optimization, intermediate control, surface modification, carrier effects, atmosphere modulation, and catalyst regeneration and recycling. Experimental studies focus on electrode preparation, electrolyte selection, and electrocatalytic reactions. Results indicate that optimizing experimental methods and conditions enhances MOR stability and effectiveness by improving catalysts' anti-CO poisoning. Methanol electrocatalysis represents a clean and effective energy conversion technology. Kinetic and thermodynamic analyses of anti-CO poisoning in methanol electrocatalysis provide a theoretical basis for catalyst design and optimization. Comprehensive research on MOR intermediate products, CO generation mechanisms, factors influencing CO poisoning, characterization methods, experimental studies, and optimization measures provides a foundation for MOR development and its application in green chemistry and renewable energy.

Abstract:Nonrenewable energy sources accounted for roughly 80% of total energy consumption [1]. Solar energy, wind energy, geothermal energy, hydropower, and fuel cells (FCs) have all recently been described as renewable energy sources. In commercial uses, renewable energy has experienced meteorological and logistical obstacles. Because of advantages such as simple fabrication/operation conditions, eco-friendly, high energy conversion efficiency, and long-term durability, FCs technologies are considered one of the most important renewable energy sources for many applications such as portable devices, cars, and electricity plants [2–5]. Methanol can be utilized in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC) to produce clean energy that can be used in smart electronic gadgets or small automobiles in this regard [6]. However, before DMFC can be used commercially, the slow oxidation kinetics and catalyst toxicity [7] must be resolved. Therefore, the development of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) is one of the most promising technologies for the applications of these devices in stationary power supplies and electric vehicles [8]. Apart from the future of mobile devices such as mobile chargers, phones, computers, and many other applications, this energy is environmentally benign because no gases are emitted and the waste is simply clean water. The biggest issue that this technique may encounter is its high cost due to the usage of noble metal catalysts (platinum (Pt) and ruthenium (Ru)) [9]. Methanol is oxidized via a multi-electron process and several products and/or intermediates can be formed, depending on the electrolyte and the nature of the electrode. Electrode materials are important parameters in the electrochemical oxidation of methanol, where high efficient electrocatalysts are needed. Several metal oxides such as Fe 2 O 3 , CeO 2 , MoOx, Co 3 O 4 , NiO, and CuO has been used in various applications, such as catalysis, water splitting photocatalysis, solar cells and gas sensing, besides their uses to enhance the electrocatalytic activity for methanol oxidation [10-11]. This paper describes the preparation of graphene quantum dot-doped polyaniline embedded copper metal-organic frameworks composite catalysts for investigating methanol oxidation in alkaline solutions. The electrode surface was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). After physicochemical characterizations of graphene quantum dot-doped polyaniline embedded copper metal-organic frameworks composite modified carbon ceramic electrode (Cu- MOF/GQDs-PAN/CCE), its electrocatalytic and stability characterizations toward methanol oxidation in alkaline media were investigated in detail by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. Results showed that, the electrocatalytic activity of the Cu- MOF/GQDs-PAN/CCE electrode is much higher than those of unmodified electrode under similar experimental conditions, showing the possibility of attaining good electrocatalytic anodes for fuel cells. Kinetic parameters such as the electron transfer coefficient (α) and the number of electrons involved in the rate determining step (n α ) for the oxidation of methanol were determined utilizing cyclic voltammetry (CV). Abstract:Selective oxidation of methane to methanol under mild conditions has been considered as a dream reaction but suffers from poor efficiency due to the strong C-H bond of methane and easy overoxidation of the methanol product. For overcoming these problems, a series of strategies has been developed for improving methanol productivity with oxidants of hydrogen peroxide and even a mixture of oxygen and hydrogen at mild temperatures. Significant achievements in these strategies using effective catalysts, such as supported metal nanoparticles, colloidal metal nanoparticles, and metal@zeolites are briefly concluded. Moreover, the current challenges, future perspectives for preparing active, selective, and stable catalysts, have been discussed. The zeolite fixed metal nanoparticle structure has been found to boost the reaction by benefiting the formation and enrichment of peroxide intermediates, which might guide the development of more efficient catalysts.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel Pt-decorated Ti electrode was prepared by a high-energy micro-arc cladding (HEMAC) technique for methanol electro-oxidation in alkaline media. The surface structure, morphology, composition and electrocatalytic properties were investigated by thin-film X-ray diffraction (TF-XRD), scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX) and electrochemical measurements. The results show that the Ptarc-depTi surface mainly comprises Ti, Pt, Pt3Ti and PtTi3. Moreover, a coarsening topographical morphology can be obtained, being composed of numerous craters/spots with sizes ranging from nano-scales to several microns. The Ptarc-depTi alleviates the CO poisoning effect of methanol electro-oxidation with a higher ratio of the forward anodic peak current (If) to the reverse anodic peak current (Ib). The improvement in the catalytic performance should be attributed to that the surrounding Ti sites ameliorate the tolerance to CO adsorption on Pt islands. The Ptarc-depTi electrode reveals its superior electrocatalytic performance toward methanol oxidation and will find promising applications in fields of catalysis, fuel cells and so forth.
Synergistic Effect of Nickel Oxyhydroxide and Tungsten Carbide in Electrocatalytic Alcohol Oxidation

Abstract:Design and synthesis of efficient small organic molecule-based electrooxidation catalysts in replacing conventional oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts has been considered as an alternative path to enable large-scale renewable energy storage. In contrast to OER, alcohol oxidation reactions can be implemented at lower applied potentials along with generating higher value-added byproducts than oxygen. Here, the ultrafine Ni/WC hybrid nanoparticles (NPs) were successfully synthesized via an in situ trapping and space-confinement pyrolysis strategy. The as-synthesized Ni/WC hybrid NPs exhibit high electrooxidation performances in oxidizing methanol, ethanol, iso-propanol, ethylene glycol, and propylene glycol in alkaline solution. Particularly, for the methanol oxidation reaction, Ni/WC NPs demonstrate high reaction activity (specific activity: 325 mA cm–2 at 0.6 V vs Ag/AgCl/3.5 M KCl; mass activity: 1363 mA mg–1) and excellent stability (catalytic current drops ∼6.8% after 4 h). In the first 6 h of the electrolysis process, methanol was effectively converted into formate with ca. 93.8% Faraday efficiency. Based on in situ IR spectra and control catalyst experiments, tungsten carbide (WC) and nickel oxyhydroxide (NiOOH, derived from Ni) species are capable of activating different functional groups of methanol. Abstract:Mesocarbon microbeads (MCMB) as Pt catalyst supports were characterized by X-ray electron diffraction, thermal field emission scanning electron microscope and electrochemical analysis. MCMB with different pretreatment were used as the catalyst supports. The XRD patterns show the existence of Pt and the micrograph of SEM shows Pt is absorbed uniformly on the surface of MCMB particles and the platinum grain size is ca. 3–5 nm. The effect of the pretreatment of the support on the catalyst performance of methanol electrooxidation was studied. Electrochemical analysis shows that MCMB are excellent candidates to be used as the support of catalyst for methanol electrochemical oxidation. The catalyst with MCMB boiled in KOH for 1 h as support exhibits a high catalytic activity during the electrooxidation of methanol.

Abstract:Developing catalysts based on non-precious metals is crucial for the electrochemical oxidation of ethanol, a pivotal anodic reaction in direct ethanol fuel cells. In this study, we crafted a series of Mn oxyhydroxides/Ni catalysts via a straightforward electrochemical deposition of Mn onto Ni foam. By carefully modulating the concentration of Mn2+ during electrodeposition, we achieved a tunable surface Mn/Ni ratio and Mn-Ni synergy. It is observed that with increasing Mn/Ni ratio, the electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) increases monotonously, while the intrinsic activity increases first then decreases. Consequently, electrodes with surface ratios of 6.1 and 8.6 exhibits relatively lower intrinsic activity but higher ECSA, ultimately attaining the highest apparent activity (94-98 mA cm−2 peak current density at 1.50 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode for ethanol oxidation. This work provides an accessible approach to tailor Mn-Ni synergy, paving the way for the design of highly efficient catalysts for electrochemical ethanol oxidation.

Abstract:The electrochemical and in-situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) techniques were used to investigate the electrooxidation behavior of methanol in acidic, neutral and alkaline media at a Pt-Ru nanoparticle modified glassy carbon (Pt-Ru/GC) electrode. The results showed that methanol could be dissociated spontaneously at the Pt-Ru/GC electrode to produce a strongly adsorbed intermediate, CO. It was found that CO could be oxidized more easily in the alkaline medium than in the acidic and neutral media. The peak potential of methanol oxidation was shifted from 0.663 and 0.708 V in the acidic and neutral media to -0.030 V in the alkaline medium, which is due to that the adsorption strength of CO on the Pt surface in the alkaline medium is weaker than that in the acidic and neutral media. The final product of the methanol oxidation is C02. However, in the alkaline medium, CO2 proCO(2) duced would form CO32- and HCO3- resulting in the decrease in the alkaline concentration and then in the decrease in the performance of DMFC. Therefore, the performance of the alkaline DMFC is not stable.

Abstract:Considerable research is being conducted in searching for effective anode catalysts in alkaline direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). Although significant progress has been achieved, it is still challenging to prepare non-Pt catalysts with both excellent activity and good durability. Herein, a highly porous NiO film is developed by a facile and fast anodization approach. The anodic NiO film demonstrates a high surface area, large mesopore volume and small crystallite size, leading to facilitated adsorption of reaction species, easy electrolyte penetration and fast reaction kinetics. Furthermore, as anodic NiO is grown in situ on a metallic substrate with strong adhesion strength and good electrical contact, it can be used directly as an anode catalyst for methanol oxidation without the need to add any binder or conducting agent. Such an additive-free approach greatly expedites the catalyst preparation process. The anodic NiO shows lower methanol oxidation potential, higher oxidation current and better catalytic durability than most of the state-of-the-art Ni-based catalysts reported elsewhere. As anodization is a simple, low cost and easily scaled up method, the work described here provides an exciting direction to speed up the practical application of alkaline DMFCs.

Abstract:Abstract Single-atom catalysts have been widely investigated for several electrocatalytic reactions except electrochemical alcohol oxidation. Herein, we synthesize atomically dispersed platinum on ruthenium oxide (Pt 1 /RuO 2 ) using a simple impregnation-adsorption method. We find that Pt 1 /RuO 2 has good electrocatalytic activity towards methanol oxidation in an alkaline media with a mass activity that is 15.3-times higher than that of commercial Pt/C (6766 vs. 441 mA mg ‒1 Pt ). In contrast, single atom Pt on carbon black is inert. Further, the mass activity of Pt 1 /RuO 2 is superior to that of most Pt-based catalysts previously developed. Moreover, Pt 1 /RuO 2 has a high tolerance towards CO poisoning, resulting in excellent catalytic stability. Ab initio simulations and experiments reveal that the presence of Pt‒O 3f (3-fold coordinatively bonded O)‒Ru cus (coordinatively unsaturated Ru) bonds with the undercoordinated bridging O in Pt 1 /RuO 2 favors the electrochemical dehydrogenation of methanol with lower energy barriers and onset potential than those encountered for Pt‒C and Pt‒Ru.
