Abstract:For many early modern playgoers, music was not a peripheral feature of commercial drama, but a chief attraction of the theatres—sometimes even the primary motivation for playgoing. This chapter explores early evidence of musically interested playgoers and their engagements with practical musical performance at venues like the Globe and Blackfriars. It works with a range of examples before taking The Merchant of Venice as an extended test case in the early modern relationship between drama and music. Through these materials, the chapter offers three core propositions about playhouse engagements with music during Shakespeare’s working life. The first is that musical experience was in itself a significant and widely acknowledged incentive for playgoing that can be traced across the textual record. The second is that playgoers regularly encountered music as an integral element of a play’s dramaturgy, and so their musical experiences need to be understood in the context of their wider engagements with drama. The final suggestion is that playwrights like Shakespeare anticipated the overlap of musical and dramatic experience in playhouse performance by embedding music into their dramaturgical designs, using playhouse responses to music to shape dramatic meaning.

Abstract:Presupposing no specialist musical knowledge, this book offers a fresh perspective on the dramatic role of music in the plays of Shakespeare and his early seventeenth-century contemporaries. Simon Smith argues that many plays used music as a dramatic tool, inviting culturally familiar responses to music from playgoers. Music cues regularly encouraged audiences to listen, look, imagine or remember at dramatically critical moments, shaping meaning in plays from The Winter's Tale to A Game at Chess, and making theatregoers active and playful participants in playhouse performance. Drawing upon sensory studies, theatre history, material texts, musicology and close reading, Smith argues for the importance of music in familiar and less well-known plays including Antony and Cleopatra, Othello, The Revenger's Tragedy, Sophonisba, The Spanish Gypsy and A Woman Killed With Kindness.

Abstract:This essay considers the archival traces left by early modern playhouse song. Acknowledging that most extant sources of theatrical song were not actually produced as records of playhouse practice per se, it advocates an approach to such material that is as attentive to the context of the surviving textual witnesses as it is to a song’s dramatic origins. By putting playhouse and wider context in direct conversation, this approach seeks not only to elucidate the cultural life of dramatic songs beyond the playhouse, but also to shed new light on playhouse music itself, based on wider engagements with and transformations of the songs.Taking a case study approach, the essay investigates one song, “Come Follow Your Leader, Follow,” from The Spanish Gypsy, tracing its wide cultural circulation as a ballad tune under the title “The Spanish Jeepsie.” Building on previous work focusing on the song’s dramatic function in the playhouse, the essay argues that the song’s theatrical use as a locus of imaginative identification with marginal subject positions is then taken up in a series of ballads encouraging identification with figures ranging from fairies and drunkards to cobblers and Diggers. Abstract:Jane Austen was a practising musician, and my intention in this paper is to investigate the significance of that fact for her writing practice. Beginning with the comparison between Elizabeth and Mary Bennet in Pride and Prejudice, I will consider contemporary attitudes to virtuosity and aesthetics in an attempt to understand the implications in Austen’s fiction of the distinction between ‘playing well’ and ‘being listened to with pleasure’. My recently completed project of cataloguing in detail each piece of playable music in the Austen Family Music Books facilitates the study of Austen’s personal musical taste in the context of her extended family and, more broadly, of English musical culture in the late Georgian era. I attempt to bring together Austen the musician with Austen the writer, both in her knowledge of the musical repertoire of the time and the language of music more generally.

Abstract:Attending an opera involves a multi-sensory evaluation (acoustical, visual, and more), cultural background and other emotional parameters. The present work aims to investigate the historical development of Italian-style opera houses, from the 16th century until today. Called “Italian” due to their origin, they developed thanks to the mutual influence of the genre and the building characteristics. Furthermore, the acoustics of historical opera houses is now considered as intangible cultural heritage, so it should be known and preserved. The paper addressed the state-of-the-art literature—most of which was proposed in Italian—which can be driven easily by the sharing of historical and contemporary knowledge.

Abstract:A musical performance renders an acoustic realization of a musical score or other representation of a composition. Different performances of the same composition may vary in terms of performance parameters such as timing or dynamics, and these variations may have a major impact on how a listener perceives the music. The analysis of music performance has traditionally been a peripheral topic for the MIR research community, where often a single audio recording is used as representative of a musical work. This paper surveys the field of Music Performance Analysis (MPA) from several perspectives including the measurement of performance parameters, the relation of those parameters to the actions and intentions of a performer or perceptual effects on a listener, and finally the assessment of musical performance. This paper also discusses MPA as it relates to MIR, pointing out opportunities for collaboration and future research in both areas.

Abstract:In this investigation the acoustic properties of ancient performance spaces for Greek and Roman drama were studied, from the viewpoint of material and design evolution. The paper first reviews the theatre evolution in antiquity. Following a systematic examination of computer simulation methodology for ancient Greek and Roman theatres, it then presents the results of a series of acoustic simulations in six typical theatre forms, using a beam-tracing program. Particular attention is paid to the scattering and diffraction from seat risers, which are important in outdoors theatres. Acoustic indices considered include sound pressure level, reverberation time and speech transmission index. The results show that in the evolution of ancient Greek and Roman theatres, changes in materials and theatre design generally resulted in acoustic improvements – the reverberation time had been increased and the sound level had been enhanced. Since the exact material characteristics are unknown, possible variations in acoustic performances are discussed based on simulations using a range of boundary absorption and scattering coefficients.

Abstract:The concept of affordances continues to provoke debate in the wider ecological community, and more specifically within the study of music, where the term has started to make increasingly frequent appearances. The adoption of this powerful idea by a range of authors interested in the human engagement with music is not without its problems, stemming from different attitudes to what musicking (to use Christopher Small's neologism) can be understood to afford. In this paper I consider some of those possibilities – ranging from the manifest affordances of physical instruments in the hands of suitably attuned players, to the social and empathic affordances of collective musicking – and raise questions about possibilities and limits. If the idea of affordances is predicated on the principle of opportunities for action, what is afforded by the apparently passive musicking that can be witnessed in concert hall audiences, and listeners to recorded music in trains, cars, shops, restaurants and bedrooms? And what is gained by bringing together this rich variety of phenomena with the terminology and conceptual commitments of affordances?

Abstract:Live music is hosted at many small restaurants and breweries as a means for attracting customers and helping to expose patrons to local bands. Outdoor live music, especially during warm spring and summer seasons provides flexibility for venues in terms of seating capacity, patron comfort, and the integration of natural scenery. However, sound from outdoor entertainment can be a vexing problem for the surrounding community, especially for late evening and nighttime performances. In response to community concerns, outdoor live music venues located in three different communities (rural, small town urban, and waterfront) were each required to provide in-situ demonstrations to assess the effect of outdoor music on nearby homes. The effectiveness of these demonstrations, along with an analysis of mitigation measures, is discussed.

Abstract:This paper considers Judith Butler's exploration of the symbolic and iterative relations of gender and the extension of her ideas into architectural discourse. The paper is set out in two main parts. The first introduces Butler's notion of performativity, in particular looking at how space operates in her text. The second part of the paper looks critically at how her work has been explored by architectural scholars; highlighted in this section is the translation of Butler's work into architecture through the lens of performance. This paper concludes by arguing that a synthesis between performance and performativity opens up a more nuanced theorisation of a subject who acts in space and time.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to discuss the act of rethinking the theatrical play within an exhibition context. The framework of reference is that of the technologically-mediated scene, which places at its core the interaction between body, space and technology and which requires new methods for its analysis and development. This paper will analyse two case studies: the Digitalife 2017 exhibition in Rome, Italy and Dumb Type. Extra-Sensory Odissey, at the Centre Pompidou – Metz, France. These two examples represent potential strategies to exhibit and re-organise the technologically-mediated performance without one of the key elements of live performance: the presence of both audience and actors. We witness a change in the framework, moving from the idea of exhibition to that of environment (seen as an immersive space, built to reinforce the audience’s experience of perception). In the last part, I offer three coexisting dimensions to think about such environments in theatre: active design, expositional and educational dimensions.
Singing in different performance spaces: The effect of room acoustics on singers' perception

Abstract:Classical singers' performances vary across different acoustic environments. The changes in the delivery are influenced by the singer's perception of the venue's acoustics. This study investigated these relationships using nine professional or semi-professional classical singers. Participants performed Giordani's "Caro mio ben" aria in five venues, and the acoustic parameters reverberance (T30 and EDT), clarity (C80), early vocal support (STv), and tonal color (EDTf) were measured. From a factor analysis of the subjective analysis three major factors emerged that, we propose, would represent three generalized percepts of Room Supportiveness, Room Noiselessness, and Room Timbre. These percepts correlated significantly with objective acoustic parameters traditionally linked to vocal support, reverberation, and timbre. Room Supportiveness and Room Noiselessness significantly contributed to the singers' likability of the acoustic environment, while Room Timbre did not. This indicates that singers' perceptual preference for a performance space may be influenced by factors affecting both auditory feedback and vocal function. These findings underscore the need for performing space designers to consider the unique needs of all stakeholders, including listeners and performers. The study contributes to the bridging of the gap between subjective perceptions and objective measurements, providing valuable insights for acoustic design considerations.
Music, performance, and preservation: insights into documentation strategies for music theatre works

Abstract:This article encourages further discussion of certain concepts and practices for the music theatre creations by the composer Constança Capdeville (1937-92) in keeping with the time and context of her compositions. Her music theatre works incorporate by a certain hybridism as they juxtapose various artistic expressions such as dance, music, and theatre. Throughout the 1970s, the performance concept as understood today was not fully recognized, either by composers or by the performers, who collaborated with Capdeville within the context of the Portuguese music scene. In this regard, the composer António de Sousa Dias believes this stemmed from the tendency to connect the term with performance art or with certain positions linked to happenings or free improvization, which were not the main concern of Capdeville. Given the difficulty in classifying her musical works, we here discuss some etymological issues around the performance and re-performance concepts. Capdeville's music theatre works combine different artistic expressions leading us to reflect on documentation strategies including interdisciplinary approaches from fields such as (digital) philology, computer science, archiving research and performing arts documentation, detailing here some perspectives and practices currently applied for preserving such artistic productions.

Abstract:ABSTRACT: How best to classify musical medium of performance? We welcome the advice and expertise of the community of Notes readers to inform our deliberations. Specifically, when referring to the sources of musical sound, should we be describing the objects (e.g., aerophone), the properties (e.g., piccolo), or some combination of the two? The Institute for Knowledge Organization and Structure convened a research group to discuss “the phenomena of music for classification.” What does it mean to classify the phenomena of music rather than musical documents or documents containing texts about music? How might we represent music apart from its documentary representations (scores, recordings, etc.)? We considered the Library of Congress Medium of Performance Thesaurus (LCMPT) and Hornbostel-Sachs (H-S) classification. The universal Basic Concepts Classification (BCC) is interdisciplinary and is organized around phenomena (things), relators (the relationships that exist among phenomena), and the properties that phenomena and relators may possess. We sought a comprehensive classification of medium of performance for the BCC. H-S focuses on the physical nature of instruments and how they make sound, the LCMPT effectively identifies specific instruments by name. H-S does not provide the level of granularity that we need but LCMPT’s larger set of terms are organized with only a few layers of hierarchy. H-S avoids local nomenclature, LCMPT embraces it. The two are attractive because they provide well-developed vocabulary and because their differences manifest as different strengths for a Semantic Web application. Ultimately our analysis reaches no specific conclusion. Instead, we have reflected thoroughly on the panoply of phenomena associated with the representation of medium of performance as phenomena of music in nondocumentary contexts.

Abstract:The interplay of architecture and acoustics is remarkable in ancient Greek and Roman theaters. Frequently they are nowadays lively performance spaces and the knowledge of the sound field inside them is still an issue of relevant importance. Even if the transition from Greek to Roman theaters can be described with a great architectural detail, a comprehensive and objective approach to the two types of spaces from the acoustical point of view is available at present only as a computer model study [P. Chourmouziadou and J. Kang, "Acoustic evolution of ancient Greek and Roman theaters," Appl. Acoust. 69, re (2007)]. This work addresses the same topic from the experimental point of view, and its aim is to provide a basis to the acoustical evolution from Greek to Roman theater design. First, by means of in situ and scale model measurements, the most important features of the sound field in ancient theaters are clarified and discussed. Then it has been possible to match quantitatively the role of some remarkable architectural design variables with acoustics, and it is seen how this criterion can be used effectively to define different groups of ancient theaters. Finally some more specific wave phenomena are addressed and discussed.

Abstract:Driven by recent advancements in Extended Reality (XR), the hype around the Metaverse, and real‐time computer graphics, the transformation of the performing arts, particularly in digitizing and visualizing musical experiences, is an ever‐evolving landscape. This transformation offers significant potential in promoting inclusivity, fostering creativity, and enabling live performances in diverse settings. However, despite its immense potential, the field of Virtual Instrument Performances (VIP) has remained relatively unexplored due to numerous challenges. These challenges arise from the complex and multi‐modal nature of musical instrument performances, the need for high precision motion capture under occlusions including the intricate interactions between a musician's body and fingers with instruments, the precise synchronization and seamless integration of various sensory modalities, accommodating variations in musicians' playing styles, facial expressions, and addressing instrument‐specific nuances. This comprehensive survey delves into the intersection of technology, innovation, and artistic expression in the domain of virtual instrument performances. It explores musical performance multi‐modal databases and investigates a wide range of data acquisition methods, encompassing diverse motion capture techniques, facial expression recording, and various approaches for capturing audio and MIDI data (Musical Instrument Digital Interface). The survey also explores Music Information Retrieval (MIR) tasks, with a particular emphasis on the Musical Performance Analysis (MPA) field, and offers an overview of various works in the realm of Musical Instrument Performance Synthesis (MIPS), encompassing recent advancements in generative models. The ultimate aim of this survey is to unveil the technological limitations, initiate a dialogue about the current challenges, and propose promising avenues for future research at the intersection of technology and the arts.

Abstract:This paper explores the use of a computer model to study the acoustics of Stonegate, a street in central York (UK) used as a performance site of the York Mystery Plays in the Middle Ages. A computer model was designed to resemble modern Stonegate due to the state of conservation of many of its fourteenth- and fifteenth- century buildings as well as its dimensions. The virtual model was evaluated objectively by comparing the results for different acoustical parameters obtained through acoustic measurements on site with those derived from the virtual model. The objective comparison showed a high level of accuracy for all parameters studied with the exception of EDT and IACCL. Future work will involve using this initial computer model to study the acoustics of the space in the sixteenth century.
Evaluating acoustical qualities of four rooms using questionnaires

Abstract:A large group of students listened to anechoic recordings of music and speech samples at several locations in four different performance rooms: a large 2000-seat multipurpose performing arts center; a black box theater; a 250-seat lecture hall; and an open field. A brief piece by Mozart played by a string quartet, a portion of a symphony by Bruckner, a soliloquy from Hamlet, and standard speech intelligibility word lists were played through a single loudspeaker located at the center front of the performing area of the room. Students evaluated qualities of sound including clarity, intimacy, envelopment, balance, reverberance, loudness, and overall impression on a bi-polar semantic rating scale. They also took speech intelligibility tests. The overall impression of the pieces of music in the black box theater and the lecture hall were scored higher than the other two rooms. There were significant differences in the ratings of the different musical pieces in all rooms. The ratings in the outdoor tests were consistently less than those in all of the indoor locations by over two scale points illustrating the importance of room effects. The ratings in the performing arts center for the recorded music were significantly lower than ratings obtained at the same locations by a group of students evaluating live orchestral performances in the room. Abstract:Journal of Planning Literature, Ahead of Print. Play has well-established physical and mental benefits for people of all ages. Urban spaces, such as parks, provide important public arenas in which to play. But to what extent do planners or planning scholarship focus on facilitating play? Our systematic literature review of 3,800 articles in nineteen academic planning journals returned 126 articles related to play. We found that the planning for play literature is an emerging discourse overwhelmingly focused on children and the physical design of urban spaces in predominantly English-speaking nations. The study identifies gaps in the planning for play literature and outlines recommendations for future research.

Abstract:In a Historical Opera House (HOH), the proscenium is the foreground part of the stage. Until the end of the 19th Century, it was extended through the cavea, being the orchestra placed at the same level of the stalls, without an orchestra pit. Soloists often moved in the proscenium when they sung, in order to increase the strength of the voice and the intelligibility of the text. The Alighieri theatre in Ravenna, designed by the Meduna brothers, the former designers of Venice’s “La Fenice” theater, is chosen as a case study. During a refurbishment in 1928, the proscenium of the stage was removed in order to open the orchestra pit, which was not considered in the original design. The original design and the present one are compared by using numerical simulations. Acoustic measurements of the opera house and vibro-acoustic measurements on a wooden stage help to reach a proper calibration of both models. Results are discussed by means of ISO 3382 criteria: the proscenium increases the sound strength of the soloists but reduces the intelligibility of the text.
