Abstract:Polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) is formed by the electronic interaction between cationic and anionic polyelectrolyte, and a number of factors influence the forming pattern and characteristic of the PEC. In this work, guanidine polymer with high cationic charge density and low MW was applied to interact with anionic carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) with low charge density and high MW. To reveal self-assembly pattern of the polyelectrolyte complex, the turbidity of PEC, morphology of layer-by-layer (LBL) film and its adsorption on cellulose fibres were measured or characterized; meanwhile the antimicrobial property of the handsheet containing the PEC was investigated. The charge ratio of anionic polymer to cationic polymer was found to be critical to the stability of the PEC; and the presence of salt tended to increase the stability of the PEC. The roughness of the LBL film was increased and then decreased with more bilayers assembled. The isothermal adsorption indicated that the adsorption amount of cationic polyelectrolyte onto cellulose fiber was increased significantly by interacting with anionic CMC. Inhibition property of the cationic antimicrobial polymer was not impaired by forming complex with anionic CMC. The CMC with high MW could facilitate the antimicrobial efficiency of the antimicrobial polymer in hand-sheet.
