Abstract:Chinese ethnic areas,mostly in the border of our motherland,are marked in the characteristics of "multi-languages,ethnically mixed,small communities" and even "cross-border living".With the acceleration of the globalizing process and increasing exchanges of foreign culture,bilingual education in minority areas should possess the functions of "stabilizing the people,consolidating the border","maintaining cultural security" and "highlighting the discourse community ".In bilingual education,the subjects of education should form the relationship of "inter-subjectivity",the content should stress on "inter-culturality" and the practice should emphasis"inter-discursivity.The following three "shifts" should be taken to transform educational paradigm from language to discourse: "language tools" shifts to "language ontology","unidirectional inculcating" transfers to "dialogues and exchanges".

Abstract:Chinese migrants have been a rich source of influential international literature, represented by key works such as Eat a Bowl of Tea by Louis Chu in 1961 and The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan in 1989. Cultural differences and conflicts, stereotypes and other complex issues regarding the diasporic lives of the Chinese sojourners are revealed vividly in those stories. In the intercultural language teaching of Chinese in USA, Australia and Europe, a central and pressing task is to improve students' intercultural sensitivities and develop the capability to communicate efficiently with China and Chinese people. In light of critical literary studies that treat literature as a kind of ‘cultural artefact’ and recent analysis of Hay and Wang which advocates ‘migratory’ literature as a ‘third place’ for intercultural communication, this paper takes a step further. It does so by expanding the spectrum into Chinese norms, stereotypes and some core values that are significant in intercultural communication with Chinese and explores interdisciplinary approaches to linking studies of Chinese migrant literature and the intercultural education of Chinese at university level.

Abstract:There have been widespread concerns over the decline of modern languages and waning interest in learning languages other than English (LOTEs) around the world, thought to be partly due to recent political events including Brexit and Trump's aggressive isolationism in the United States. By contrast, governments in Greater China have energetically renewed their investment in promoting LOTE education, driven by globalisation initiatives such as Mainland China's 'Belt and Road' initiative and Taiwan's 'New Southbound Policy'. Thus, it remains pertinent to explore the policies and practices of multilingual education expansion in this region, as the success or failure of the globalisation initiatives may have profound consequences for the prospects of multilingual and multicultural development at universities in the Greater China region and perhaps around the world. This special issue presents empirical studies in which the authors, as insiders engaged in the new wave of language policy shifts, offer diverse perspectives on issues including foreign language curricula, learners' motivational identities and teachers' professional development. We contend that to sustain the increase in multilingual education, the tensions between global English and LOTEs, between individual identity and contextual variation, and between instrumental orientation and translanguaging/transcultural values of language learning need to be addressed.
Multilingual and multimodal mediation in online intercultural conversations: a translingual perspective

Abstract:<span>This study explored peer groups' mediation processes in the digital space. Building upon translingual research and multimodal discourse analysis, the researcher analysed video transcript excerpts of oral conversations and on-screen interactions among university students of different linguistic and cultural backgrounds. This article focuses on multilingual and multimodal mediation practices, which include polyaccented exemplification, bilingual interpretation, intercultural comparison, transnational definition, polyphonic performance and multimodal instruction (<i>N</i> = 24). The results show that the students attended to dynamic uses of English, Chinese and other languages as multilingual franca while communicating affect and stance through embodied expressions and shared screens in stylised multimodal discourses. The translingual analyses emphasise the students' collaborative transformations of English as a lingua franca (ELF) communication into playful interactions within digitally mediated networks of relationships. This study suggests that online peer mediation provides useful methods for developing university students' translingual awareness and capability for participating in intercultural conversations.</span>

Abstract:Due to the extensive development of globalization, the ethnic makeup of the world is becoming more and more complex, and the issue of cultural diversity has emerged as a key concern for all nations' educational systems. Cross-cultural education is an educational prescription for many western countries to deal with cultural diversity and strengthen national cohesion in order to address this issue and promote mutual respect, understanding, and communication between different groups and individuals. One of the most recent developments in global education is cross-cultural education, which has also given rise to a brand-new area of study in the field of education. The research has identified cross-cultural education as making up about 50% of all education. Numerous nations have practiced cross-cultural education, which has been promoted by UNESCO, with many issues that merit study. The traditional English teaching approach cannot meet the learning needs of today's students in light of the recent curriculum reform, and students have long engaged in passive learning. College English instructors must modify traditional teaching philosophies, adapt to contemporary developments, integrate information technology, use a variety of teaching techniques, fully pique students' interest in learning, and encourage them to take the initiative in their own education if they want to reclaim the initiative from the students in their classrooms.

Abstract:Against the backdrop of the Belt and Road Initiative, the study reports on the ideological construction of multilingualism in higher education in mainland China. Through a new methodological approach combining intertextual discourse analysis and thematic analysis, this paper concentrates on the interplay of ideologies towards multilingualism between the macro-(national/provincial) and meso-(institutional) levels. We examine 22 political texts issued by agents of different levels, and sixteen paratexts containing language issues discussed by educational administrators and language education experts. The analysis of the texts reveals that there is a gap between the two levels in terms of the variety and connotation of terms related to foreign languages. The analysis of the paratexts identifies three categories of recurring values of languages and four categories of benefits from foreign language (education), among which the pragmatic value of foreign languages for national development is the most significant. Moreover, institutional agents mentioned the instrumental value of languages for personal development and their global cultural value. The multiple perspectives on multilingual education in the Chinese context demonstrate the complexities of the ideological construction of multilingualism in this early phase of diversifying multilingual higher education, which generate important implications for policy makers in China and other countries.

Abstract:This paper seeks to understand why the educational experiences of ethnic minority Chinese lag behind the educational experiences of Han Chinese through the lens of multiculturalism education. We conduct a critical discourse analysis of educational laws and policies from 1982 to 2012 to trace how multicultural education is articulated in Chinese national policies. We find government support for bilingual education and linguistic diversity, but a patriarchal relationship exists between students from both Han and ethnic minority backgrounds. Moreover, a disconnect exists between encouraging languages of ethnic minority groups and an absence of teacher knowledge and awareness of the cultures of ethnic minority groups. In order to address the educational gap between Han and ethnic minority groups, we argue for the creation of a transformative, two-way conduit of multiculturalism, both theoretically and pedagogically, that empowers and actively engages students from ethnic minority groups, their Han counterparts, and bilingual teachers.

Abstract:In this paper I analyse aspects of the new multicultural context which has been transforming Spanish society over the last few decades. Current demographic changes in Spain contrast with traditional ideologies and practices which are still prevalent in schools. As a consequence of these contradictions, students from other educational systems and cultures, with different languages and background knowledge that are not valued and legitimated, are having difficulties reaching minimum educational objectives. The present research focuses on Chinese students in the Spanish education system and describes, analyses and explains those difficulties, keeping in mind the different sociopolitical, economic and historical circumstances in both China and Spain, which have led to different relationships between (1) learning–teaching ideologies, (2) social practices in the implementation of language teaching methods and (3) classroom interactions. The nature of the ‘difficulties’ facing Chinese students is deconstructed, resulting perhaps from the devaluation of these differences in the current immigration context of Spain. I argue that if no culture-specific theoretical/methodological tools are used, the children of Chinese origin will suffer from the problem of cultural bias. Finally, some suggestions in terms of multiculturalist standards are offered for improving practice in second-language teaching.

Abstract:Abstract The development of English as a global language has urged the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) to implement some reforms in relation to textbook design and curriculum development as well as the approaches to and goals of English language teaching (ELT). From the multilingual perspective, Global Englishes (GE) and translanguaging have both challenged the traditional native-oriented goal of ELT. Based on the level of language policy planning in the multilingual Greater Bay Area of China, this paper addresses the need to incorporate GE and translanguaging into textbook design and curriculum development. Referring to Byram’s framework of cultural content in textbooks, and to the GE proposal of exposure of multilingualism/multiculturalism and respect of diverse culture and identity in ELT, the paper further reports a case study to analyse the cultural content of the textbook, Speaking Critically: Intercultural Conversation . The paper also explores university students’ attitudes towards the integration of Chinese local culture into textbooks. The paper ends by addressing some challenges associated with translating GE and translanguaging into textbook design and curriculum development, and it provides further implications of such a proposal.

Trilingual and Multicultural Experiences Mitigating Students' Linguistic Stereotypes: Investigating the Perceptions of Undergraduates of Chinese Heritage Regarding Native/Non-Native English Teachers

Abstract:Student stereotyping of non-native English-speaking teachers is a common focus of research and there is a paucity of studies targeting trilingual students of multicultural backgrounds. The present study aims to investigate the dimensions of trilingual Chinese heritage undergraduates' perceptions of English teachers from Kachru's stratification of native-English-speaking (Inner-circle), ESL (Outer-circle) and EFL (Expanding-circle) regions. A mixed study design was used to collect data including online questionnaires and an offline semi-structured interview. Quantitative findings indicate the subjects' preference for native speaking teachers, together with a hierarchical ranking in teacher assessments according to race/ethnicity. Qualitative findings demonstrate that students are also less biased on racial grounds, considering all teachers are "qualified and good enough", hence the "Inner > Outer > Expanding = Qualified > Unqualified" result. Multilingual and multicultural factors have been used to account for the mitigated linguistic stereotypes from sociocultural and political perspectives. Findings of this study challenge but nevertheless also confirm to some extent the traditional native/non-native dichotomy that manifests raciolinguistic traits and support Kachru's stratification with statistical evidence. Educational implications are discussed to benefit future practice to further eliminate student prejudice and to better prepare native Chinese teachers of the English language.

Abstract:This article narrates and analyzes the author’s life experiences as a learner, teacher, and researcher of diverse languages across three contexts: mainland China, Hong Kong, and Norway. Deconstructing the influential episodes in the writer’s life trajectory, this autoethnography explores the author’s transformation from a monolingually-minded individual to a border-crossing, multilingually hearted scholar. The analysis is undertaken through the theoretical lens of language ideology and dominant language constellation (DLC) and epitomizes the profound influence of sociocultural structures on an individual’s identity search and development. Confronting the multilingual turn in education and echoing the call to centralize identity in language teaching, this self-study exemplifies autoethnography as an empowering method for an ideological shift from perceiving “language(s)-as-problem” to advocating “language(s)-as-resource.” The study also illustrates how the construct of DLC can be deployed as a tangible model of multilinguals’ ever-evolving linguistic identities.

An Exploratory Study of Chinese College EFL Teachers’ Multilingual Awareness

Abstract:Teacher Multilingual Awareness (MLA) is attracting growing scholarly attention due to the vigorous development of multilingual education worldwide. However, this concept is largely unexplored in the Chinese context. Adopting a mixed-methods design, the present study investigated Chinese college EFL teachers' MLA based on a six-dimensional conceptual construct. The questionnaire survey supplemented by interview data revealed a general pro-multilingual orientation of EFL teachers as well as their medium to high levels of MLA. Moreover, Multivariate Analyses of Variance (MANOVAs) were conducted to assess the roles of degree of multilingualism and teaching experience in teacher MLA along six dimensions: (a) crosslinguistic and metalinguistic awareness; (b) awareness of multilingual students' advantages; (c) endorsement for multilingual education; (d) national identity; (e) awareness of NNESTs' strength; and (f) multilingual pedagogy awareness. The results showed, rather unexpectedly, that the degree of multilingualism only had a significant impact on the crosslinguistic and metalinguistic dimensions of MLA, and that teaching experience had no differentiating effect on any of the dimensions. These findings underscore the necessity of formulating and implementing teacher training programs that explicitly target the cultivation of each MLA dimension in societies with English-dominated foreign language education systems.

Abstract:Abstract While an increasing literature on multilingualism addresses the key role of language in access to social resources, including crisis communication, little attention has been paid to practices of English-mediated multilingualism. Based on semi-structured interviews with 10 international students from South Asia and Southeast Asia receiving their higher education in China, the study reveals what language-related challenges international students encounter, how they mobilize their multilingual resources to enhance their access to crisis communication and build a shared community, and how their multilingual competences are valorized and enacted in the shifting paradigm of the China-oriented new economy addressing mutual accountability in South-South cooperation. The study suggests that English-mediated multilingualism in China fails to bridge the needs of international students of diverse backgrounds. The study also calls attention to the shifting paradigm of multilingual studies and the necessity of addressing the real world problems of health communication in a diverse context.

Abstract:Economic globalization promotes the process of internationalization of higher education. The educational level of international students is an important aspect of the development level of higher education in a country. The international Chinese language education is the basis of education for international students. At the same time, the main purpose of Chinese International Education is to strive to expand Chinese language teaching and spread Chinese culture. In international Chinese education, the importance of cultural teaching has become increasingly prominent, and it is showing the trend of globalization and diversity. Based on the relevant achievements of predecessors, the author explores the integration of cultural factors in language teaching in international Chinese language education. It is believed that the integration of cultural factors such as ideas, ways of thinking, expressions, customs and habits in international Chinese language education can be effective. Effectively enhance the interest of the classroom. The purpose of cultural integration in language education of Chinese International Education should follow the principles of universality. Teachers should give full play to their subjective initiative and enhance the awareness of cultural integration. Combined with the knowledge teaching method and other teaching methods, it can better help students learn and understand Chinese, and more effectively improve students' cross-cultural communication skills.

Abstract:This chapter—drawing on fieldwork conducted through questionnaires, interviews, and participant observation in the form of a triangulation method—references Antonio Gramsci’s writings on language and political theory (also known as glottopolitical theory) as an optic through which to analyze bilingual education, translation, and social mobility in Xinjiang, China. By adhering to the practices and procedures governing empirical investigation, it evaluates the effects of China’s bi/multilingual language policy and discusses its implications within education. The chapter’s objectives are threefold: 1) to evaluate current forms of bilingual education in Xinjiang within the curriculum as a whole, and to assess the importance of using specific languages and translation; 2) to assess the attitudes of different ethnic groups towards current bi/multilingual education policy and its evolution in Xinjiang; and 3) to develop proposals concerning the preservation of minority culture and languages while also diffusing the benefits of Mandarin and English for career enhancement, without exacerbating the tensions that exist between unity and diversity. The research shows that an optimal education policy would take into consideration the needs of minorities. To provide equal opportunities for all, whatever their first language, is to contribute to social harmony and economic progress at both a regional and national level. It is argued that aspects of Gramsci’s glottopolitical writings on language and cultural identity reflect the guiding principles of an openness to linguistic diversity and a balanced language policy in terms of ‘plurality within unity’ in China. This chapter analyzes attitudes to bi/multilingual education, translation, and social mobility in the multi-ethnic region of Xinjiang, China. It explores empirical fieldwork conducted through questionnaires, interviews, and participant observation in the form of a triangulation method, and references Antonio Gramsci's glottopolitical writings on language and political theory to highlight the successful elements of bi/multilingual education and policy in Xinjiang and to formulate recommendations for improvements. The chapter aims to evaluate forms of bilingual education in Xinjiang within the curriculum as a whole. It assesses the importance of using the medium of specific languages and also translation in the classroom to support learning and language acquisition among the region’s various ethnic groups at primary and secondary schools and in higher education institutions. The chapter also aims to develop proposals concerning the preservation of minority culture and languages while also diffusing the benefits of Mandarin and English for career enhancement, without exacerbating the tensions that exist between unity and diversity.

Abstract:As a new analytical pointcut,language has become one of the focuses in hot topics about the floating population's urban inclusion.The language use of the floating population shows lots of characteristics and tendencies as follows: mastering multilingual codes;preferring mandarin to dialect at the workplace but just the reverse at home;the motivation of language study coming from the utilitarian purpose of livelihood and communication;linguistic identity departing from the linguistic practice;speech community has been forming.At the impact of language on urban inclusion of the floating population,fluent in Mandarin as a human capital advantage plays a positive role in their work obtaining and productive capacity.But the language barrier constrains expansion of their social network and life space.The large scale of population movement not only triggered changes of language ecology where people move to,but also brought opportunity and challenge for the promotion of Mandarin.
A Study of International Students'Multilingual Academic Practices in the Context of Globalization

Abstract:The rise of globalization of higher education has brought unprecedented challenges to the training of international students in Japan’s graduate schools. It is particularly important to investigate their multilingual practices in the context and to study how to play a role in the development od academic literacy. This study recruited 13 Chinese students enrolled in the English-medium-instruction Degree Program（EMI） of Japanese universities. Data were collected from semi-structured interviews and the reading/lecture notes of participants. We used NVivo 12 to analyze the data and interpreted international students’ multilingual practices drawing on the concept of academic socialization as well as the three dimensions（awareness,spatiality, and relationality） of the Research Multilingually（RM-ly） framework. Qualitative analysis revealed a reconstructive and covariant system where individual students constantly interacted with their learning environment in the context of academic socialization. We also revealed the impact of the system on the development of individual students’ academic literacies. Especially, we found that increased language awareness of students as multilingual researchers helps to enhance their academic reflexivity; the constraints of multilingual space cultivate multilingual habitus in students and develop their academic autonomy; academic communities established in formal or informal multilingual networks promote the academic cooperation among students.
