Abstract:Acenes and N-heteroacenes have been synthesized and studied for over a century because of their fundamentally interesting materials properties and promise for device applications. Within this context, our laboratory has previously synthesized nitrogen-containing tetrabenzo[de,hi,op,st]pentacenes via an aza-Diels-Alder reaction-based approach, and herein, we expand our methodology to obtain substituted, expanded, functionalized, and dimeric tetrabenzoacenes. Overall, our study adds to the limited number of tetrabenzoacene derivatives reported to date and may open further opportunities for these materials in organic optoelectronics applications.

Abstract:A series of novel sulfur-containing bent N-heteroacenes were constructed and characterized by NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. By introducing sulfur-containing groups (thio, sulfinyl, and sulfonyl) into bent azaacenes, their electronic delocalization was improved and frontier energy levels were modulated. The target products displayed tunable optical and electronic properties through altering the valence of sulfur and fused length of the azaacenes. For the first time, typical products were utilized as organic field effect transistor materials, affording promising results.

Abstract:A novel compound 2,6-diphenyl-1,5-diaza-1,5-dihydro-s-indacene (Indacene) was synthesized by means of the Madelung reaction starting from 2,5-dimethyl-1,4-phenylenediamine. The structure was characterised by NMR, IR, MS, and elemental analysis. The UV/Vis absorption and photoluminescence spectra were investigated. The electroluminescent behaviour of the new compound was studied in ITO/PEDOT-PSS/Indacene-CNPPP/Mg–Ag(10:1)/Ag devices. The electroluminescent maximum was recorded at 504nm corresponding to a greenish blue emission. The results demonstrate the potential application of Indacene in OLEDs.

Abstract:A convenient and efficient Cu(OAc)2-mediated N-heteroannulation reaction of [60]fullerene with N-sulfonylated o-amino-aromatic methyl ketones or O-alkyl oximes has been reported for the synthesis of novel and scarce [60]fullerene-fused tetrahydroazepinones and -azepinonimines in a highly selective manner. Moreover, a possible mechanism involving two pathways is proposed on the basis of the experimental observations.

Abstract:Zinc has the ansa: Deprotonation of the ligand 1,8-bis(indenyl)naphthalene followed by treatment with ZnCl2 gives an ansa-zincocene. Abstract:Azulene-fused acenes demonstrate enhanced stability, unique aromaticity, and distinctive photophysical properties, rendering them significant in organic electronics. In the present study, we report a new type of nonalternant analogue of pentacene incorporating a non-terminal azulene unit. Aromaticity analyses reveal that the five-membered rings in this analogue exhibit antiaromatic. The extensive conjugated aryl substituents on the acene's side shift the HOMO distributions from the naphthyl ring and metallacycle to the aryl groups, thereby narrowing the HOMO–LUMO energy gap and enhancing absorptions in the low-energy regions. Furthermore, these fused acenes readily react with base rather than acid, resulting in reversible base/acid stimuli responsiveness.

Abstract:Linear polycyclic systems are promising candidates in the area of organic electronics. Herein, we present the syntheses of three azulene‐indole (AzIn) fused polycyclic heteroaromatics (PHAs), AzIn‐1, AzIn‐2 and DGAzIn, which have nitrogens and nonhexagonal rings simultaneously. The chemical structures, optical and electrochemical properties of three AzIn‐based PHAs have been investigated, as well as their protonation behaviors with trifluoroacetic acid (TFA). All three AzIn‐based PHAs exhibit narrow optical band gaps with moderate to good air stability, anti‐Kasha emission and reversible stimuli‐responsiveness. Furthermore, these straightforward and simple synthetic routes would provide a new entry for constructing novel azulene‐embedded π‐conjugates, especially for the seven‐membered ring of azulene unit, wherein the regioselective transformation is not well developed.

Abstract:In the past two decades, substantial advances have been made on the asymmetric alkyne functionalization by the activation of inert alkynes. However, these asymmetric transformations have so far been mostly limited to transition metal catalysis, and chiral Bronsted acid-catalyzed examples are rarely explored. Here, we report a chiral Bronsted acid-catalyzed dearomatization reaction of phenol- and indole-tethered homopropargyl amines, allowing the practical and atom-economical synthesis of a diverse array of valuable fused polycyclic enones and indolines bearing a chiral quaternary carbon stereocenter and two contiguous stereogenic centers in moderate to good yields with excellent diastereoselectivities and generally excellent enantioselectivities (up to >99% enantiomeric excess). This protocol demonstrates Bronsted acid-catalyzed asymmetric dearomatizations via vinylidene-quinone methides.

Abstract:We report a facile synthesis of diindeno-fused dibenzo[a,h]anthracene derivatives (DIDBA-2Cl, DIDBA-2Ph, and DIDBA-2H) with different degrees of non-planarity using three substituents (chloro, phenyl, and hydrogen) of various sizes. The planarization of their cores, as evidenced by the decreased end-to-end torsional angles, was confirmed by X-ray crystallography. Their enhanced energy gaps with twisting were investigated by a combination of spectroscopic and electrochemical methods with density functional theory, which showed a transition from singlet open-shell to closed-shell configuration. Moreover, their doubly reduced states, DIDBA-2Ph(2-) and DIDBA-2H(2-), were achieved by chemical reduction. The structures of dianions were identified by X-ray crystallographic analysis, which elucidated that the electron charging further distorted the backbones. The electronic structure of the dianions was demonstrated by experimental and theoretical approaches, suggesting decreased energy gaps with larger non-planarity, different from the neutral species.
Synthesis and Properties of Indeny-l modified Anthracene Fluorescent Material

Abstract:An indenyl-modified anthracene derivative (INAN),namely 9,10-bis(4-(1,1-dimethy-l 3-pheny-l 1H-inden-2-yl) phenyl)anthracene,was designed and synthesized,and its molecular structure was characterized by 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR,as well as HRMS.Its photophysical properties were investigated by means of UV-vis absorption and emission spectra.Its electrochemical pro-perties and thermal-stability were studied by cyclovoltammetry and thermal gravimetric analysis,respectively.In addition,the HOMO and LUMO levels and electrochemical energy gap of the compound were calculated. Compared with commercial product, namely 9,10-bis(4-(2,2-diphenylvinyl)phenylanthracene,the fluorescence of compound INAN slightly blue-shifted along with the improvement of the thermal-stability and quantum yield. Compound INAN could be utilized as efficient blue fluorescent material being applied to organic light-emitting diodes and bio-imaging.

Abstract:The introduction and length-extending of peripheral alkyl chains is usually to improve the solubility of conjugated organic molecules. This article reports the synthesis and optical properties of 9,10-bis(N-alkylindole-3-yl-vinyl-2)anthracenes (IACn) with different alkyl lengths. These homologues exhibit the strong alkyl length-dependent piezofluorochromic (PFC) behaviour, and their PFC spectral shifts are in the range of 27-65 nm. It is found that the shorter the N-alkyl length, the larger the spectral shift upon mechanical grinding or pressing. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction evidenced that the mechanical grinding has resulted in destruction of pristine ordered structures, formation of crystal defects, and appearance of some amorphous states, which is responsible for the PFC behaviour.

Abstract:A tandem reaction initiated by Au(I)-catalyzed C1-C5 cyclization of enediynes bearing an internal carboxy nucleophile has been developed, providing a distinctive methodology for the assembly of fused indenes including indeno[1,2-c]isochromen-5(11H)-ones and indeno[1,2-b]pyran-2(5H)-ones. A mechanism involving the concerted formation of the five- and six-membered rings was proposed.

Abstract:Herein, two novel N-phenylated N-heteroacenes (1 and 2) are reported, along with details of their synthesis, structures, and properties. Compound 1 is a N-hetero analogue of rubrene, but differs from rubrene by having a bent backbone and behaving as an insulator in the solid state owing to the lack of π-π interactions. Compound 2 is a N-hetero analogue of 6,13-diphenylpentacene (DPP) with essentially the same molecular geometry and crystal packing as DPP, but exhibiting a field effect mobility higher than that of DPP by two orders of magnitude.

Abstract:A straightforward synthetic route toward indole-fused heteroacenes was developed. The strategy is composed of a one-pot process starting with a multicomponent reaction of cyclohexanone, primary amine and N-tosyl-3-nitroindole followed by an oxidation step. The one-pot approach was found to be general, affording both symmetric and nonsymmetric indolo[3,2-b]indoles in good yields. The strategy was also utilized for accessing 5-ring fused benzo[g]indolo[3,2-b]indole. We could extend the methodology for the synthesis of benzothieno[3,2-b]indoles starting from 3-nitrobenzothiophene. The importance of the developed method was exemplified by performing the reaction sequence on gram scale and also by the synthetic transformations of indolo[3,2-b]indoles. In addition, the change in photophysical properties with extension of conjugation of the synthesized heteroacenes was studied.

Abstract:We report a one-pot synthesis of a series of unprecedented angular-fused diaza-dinaphthopyrene isomers (1,8-DNPy and 1,6-DNPy) in high yields, which are enabled by regio-selective Bischler-Napieralski cyclization to fuse two quinolone rings either on the same or opposite faces of a pyrene core. Benefiting from the high reactivity of the 1- and 8-positions of the pyrene ring, steric effect from substitution and remarkably different dipole moments, high ring closure selectivity for the 1,8-form vs. the 1,6-form up to 6 : 1 is achieved with ease of separation. With differentiated molecular symmetry, conformation, intermolecular interactions and aromaticity, the two kinds of regio-isomers exhibit distinct single-crystal structures and optoelectronic properties. Impressively, isomer-dependent mechanochromic fluorescent properties of these 2D-azaacenes are identified, which are unique in their turn-on fluorescence feature and contrasting spectral shifts. These findings allow facile and modular access to regio-specific 2D-N-heteroarenes, which provide a way to create innovative optical sensors with improved sensitivity and fruitful fluorescent properties.

Abstract:Oxadisilole-fused 1H-benzo[f]- and 1H-naphtho[2,3-f]indazoles have been synthesized by the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions of benzo- or naphtho-oxabicycloalkenes with nitrile imines generated in situ from N-arylhydrazonoyl chlorides followed by deoxygenation and aromatization. The photophysical, redox and thermal properties of these compounds have been characterized. Some of the indazoles show potential as deep-blue emitters for OLED applications as a result of their high fluorescence quantum yields and good thermal stabilities.

In contrast to their colourless structural isomer naphthalene, azulenes are known for exhibiting vibrant colours, resulting from their non‐alternant hydrocarbon nature. Whereas the unsubstituted azulene is blue, the presented indenoazulenes show a range of dark green emerald‐like shades.
