Abstract:With the rapid development of hydrogen use technology, such as fuel cells, large-scale hydrogen production is becoming more and more of a concern worldwide in recent years. High temperature electrolysis (HTE), which is the highly efficient electrolysis of steam at high temperature and utilizes the heat and electrical power supplied simultaneously by advanced nuclear reactor, provides a very promising way for massive production of hydrogen in the future. Operation at high temperature reduces the electrical energy requirement for the electrolysis and also increases the thermal efficiency of the power-generating cycle. It is expected that, through the combination of a high-temperature reactor and a high temperature electrolysis facility, the process will achieve an overall thermal conversion efficiency of 48 similar to 59%. Planar solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) technology is being developed because it has the best potential for high efficiency due to minimized voltage and current losses. Furthermore, Modular design of the stack can increase the reliability and flexibility for different scale of demands. This chapter provides an overview of HTE technology including its key characteristics and challenges of SOEC development. The chapter also introduces the mechanism and system configuration of hydrogen production through HTE, analyzes the requirements for heat sources integrated with HTE. In addition, the thermo- hydrogen transformation efficiency has been studied in detail by the author based on thermodynamics, reaction kinetics and system principals. The relationship of thermo-hydrogen conversion efficiency with temperature is clearly illustrated.
