Abstract:This study considers translation as a joint enterprise in the management of both linguistic translation and associated meaning-making resources in English language teacher talk from a translanguaging perspective. Analysis of classroom teaching in Chinese universities using conversation analysis (CA) under the SETT (self-evaluation of teacher talk) framework reveals that the sequential patterns of translation go beyond the linguistic structure and are assimilated into a translanguaging pedagogical frame in alignment with dynamic L2 classroom modes. The findings contribute to an understanding of translanguaging effect within certain L2 classroom contexts. As such, the research further informs the appropriate use of translation/translanguaging practice to develop classroom interactional competence.
Relooking at the Roles of Translanguaging in English as a Foreign Language Classes for Multilingual Learners: Practices and Implications

Abstract:The use of translanguaging pedagogy rather than favoring English-only teaching put those who hold monolingual ideology in foreign language pedagogy. A study of English as a foreign language (EFL) for multilingual students showed that embracing translanguaging appeared compelling that it emerged in Neidi Xinjiang Classes (NXC) in China. After reviewing the concepts of translanguaging, this writing presents the translanguaging theory and translanguaging pedagogy. Guided by translanguaging lenses and stances, a longitudinal case study was carried out to look into the EFL pedagogy in NXC. The focal data was heavily drawn from reflective interviews and classroom observations. The data analyses were particularly paid on the triangulation of data with the interviews and classroom observational data. The findings indicate the students made full use of the affordances to do translanguaging practices while a few EFL teachers with the monolingual ideology still violated English-only constraints against the background of the multilingual turn. Therefore, the conclusion builds on dynamic multilingual stances to identify the significance of enabling the presence of translanguaging pedagogy.

Abstract:This article explores the recent development of translanguaging from the perspective of multilingualism. This is in light of the multilingual turn in the field of foreign language teaching, particularly English language teaching (ELT), which challenges the fixed and traditional monolingual framework for foreign language education. In particular, this article reviews stakeholders’ attitudes towards the implementation of translanguaging in foreign language classroom settings. It is found that stakeholders generally hold positive attitudes towards translanguaging practices in various ELT contexts. This review highlights the importance of re-examining the significance of translanguaging in ELT practices, for example, by challenging the monolingual English-only language policy and recognizing students’ first language as a linguistic resource to facilitate language learning in both English language and content learning. The article concludes by offering some practical pedagogical implications for both policy makers and language practitioners.

Chinese Primary School Students’ Translanguaging in EFL Classrooms: What is It and Why is It Needed?

Abstract:This paper reports on a qualitative study of 35 Chinese primary school students’ needs of translanguaging in English classrooms where speaking Chinese is officially not favored. The author collected data through classroom observation, audio recordings, field notes, and semi-structured interviews. The analysis revealed that driven by the unknown and known things, the young Chinese students naturally alternated between Chinese and English out of two types of needs: 1) to accomplish in class learning tasks such as comprehending new content and producing complete sentences in English; and 2) to freely express themselves including describing their ability, sharing stories and explaining how they comprehend new knowledge. The first type is the basis for the young learners to continue to engage in learning and follow their teachers while the second type shows a more dynamic and flexible translanguaging. Translanguaging as a means of mediation is a way of knowing and a way of expressing for the young language learners. The findings inspire language teachers, educators, and policymakers to reexamine the English-only instruction policy in English as a Foreign Language classrooms and to gain a better understanding of translingual practices from learners’ perspectives.

Abstract:Translanguaging is a concept that has been widely adopted to conceptualize the diverse multilingual and multimodal practices in foreign language classrooms. This study explored one teacher’s translanguaging practices and attitude in an L3 Spanish audio-oral classroom at a Chinese university. Based on data collected from classroom observation and interviews, the study identified a full range of translanguaging practices, including gestures, visual cues, touch, tone, pictures, and switching between languages, which the teacher used for five major purposes: concept/language point explanation, comprehension check, content knowledge localization, instruction reinforcement, and rapport building. The teacher acknowledged the value of translanguaging as a means to engage students’ full linguistic and cultural repertoires, assist content learning, and build rapport. The pedagogical implications of incorporating translanguaging practices in ELE (español como lengua extranjera) pedagogy is discussed, with insights into the teaching of languages other than English (LOTEs) in and beyond China. Abstract:This paper examines the translanguaging practice of two EFL teachers in a Xinjiang university, where English and Mandarin Chinese are predominant but Uyghur is minoritised as a medium of instruction. We focus on data in which the teachers translanguage across all three languages and make a case for the conception of pedagogical translanguaging which is differentiated from spontaneous translanguaging and in which named languages (or naming languages) can play an important role in the instruction (Cenoz, J., and D. Gorter. 2017. "Sustainable Translanguaging and Minority Languages: Threat or Opportunity?" While translanguaging across all three languages appears a very useful teaching resource, it is restricted to the teaching of English vocabulary and grammar, areas in which students are perceived to be weakest. Abstract:English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) is being used to teach academic subjects in international programmes in China to meet the growing number of Chinese students' need to study abroad. Through the lens of inquiry-based science teaching, this study examined how the four EMI science teachers of an international programme at a private high school employed translanguaging in scientific practices such as identifying variables and formulating hypotheses. Based on the data collected from a case study, the analyses demonstrate how these science teachers used multilingual and multimodal resources to facilitate students' engagement in scientific inquiry activities and to promote the construction of scientific knowledge. A total of seven types of translanguaging practices were identified, including opening the inquiry, negotiating directions, teacher encouragement, managing discipline, fun learning environment, definitions, and explanations. The findings imply that pedagogical translanguaging can create a space for the construction of scientific knowledge, as well as a space for the implementation of scientific practices in an inquiry-based EMI classroom environment.

Abstract:Pedagogical translanguaging has been extensively researched over the past decade. Yet, little is known about the attitudes of students towards this practice. Students constitute an integral part of classroom interactions and their learning process is significantly affected by teachers’ classroom discourse. This action research (AR) study, situated in a Chinese university Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) reading classroom and aided by lesson recordings and two sets of questionnaires, explores the translanguaging strategies employed by the teacher as well as the students’ attitudes to such strategies. Through incorporating feedback collected from students regarding the teacher’s modifications of language use, the study has demonstrated how the teacher mobilizes her full linguistic resources, in the form of translanguaging, to achieve pedagogical outcomes, which eventually leads to the establishment of a mutually beneficial classroom ecology. The study also indicates that advanced EFL learners, highly motivated to improve language proficiency and acquire subject content unanimously reject the traditional monolingual approach to teaching. The findings call for further research into the impact of pedagogical translanguaging on students’ learning process in multilingual classrooms.

Abstract:The present study examines translingual practices among students enrolled in international English-medium instruction (EMI) Master's degree programmes in a top-rated comprehensive university in Shanghai, China. Ethnographic observations across urban/institutional spaces and social media as well as in-depth student interviews converge to reveal that while English has been used as a lingua franca for disciplinary teaching, learning, and navigation of everyday life, students have been engaged in translingual practices (1) to understand and create meaning out of intercultural experiences in the cosmopolitan city of Shanghai and (2) to negotiate epistemic frameworks as contextualized in both the institutional student management setting and the global politics of discipline-specific knowledge production. This article is hence aimed at expanding the scope of translingual research to include critical inquiry into the role of English as a lingua franca in students' transcultural/trans-epistemic experiences in EMI programmes in the context of internationalization of higher education.

Abstract:Language Teaching Research, Ahead of Print. Due to the internationalization and marketization of higher education and the increasing prevalence of English as a global language, higher education institutions worldwide have implemented English medium instruction (EMI) courses, highlighting the necessity to examine how languages are chosen and practised in EMI courses. With a mixed-method triangulation approach, this study collected data through classroom observation, questionnaire survey and semi-structured interviews in order to investigate teachers' and students' language choices and practices in EMI classrooms at a Chinese university. The questionnaire results showed that although the respondents slightly preferred English-only practice, they found it difficult to implement it and would resort to translanguaging practices, confirming an inconsistency between language ideologies and language practices. The observation findings revealed the adoption of translanguaging for meaning comprehension, terminology explanation and translation of local elements, while interview findings revealed three types of student participants, i.e. believers, sceptics, and inbetweeners, towards translanguaging practice in EMI courses. In contrast, most of the teachers held a favourable stance towards the English-only practice in EMI courses. While the participants all regarded translanguaging practices as facilitators for language and content learning, they believed that hierarchical relationships do not exist among languages. This study carries important implications to bridge the gap between language ideologies and language practices and call for attention to developing language practice from a multilingual perspective.

Abstract:Abstract Translanguaging theory and pedagogy have emerged as central to the recent multilingual turn in educational linguistics and language teaching, including ELT. This article will explore translanguaging from theoretical and practical perspectives, aiming to clarify what it is and is not claiming, and what types of pedagogic practice it advocates, both in its stronger and weaker forms. I argue that a paradigm shift is occurring in the field, parallel with the shift in understanding of the nature of language itself that underpins both translanguaging theory and integrationism in linguistics. Implications for practice in ELT are also explored, including a reorientation concerning the goals of language teaching, a recognition of English as a social construct with traditions of use rather than immutable rules, and a repositioning of the many translingual teachers around the world as the experts at the centre of the multilingual turn that is defining early twenty-first century language pedagogy.

Abstract:Abstract The development of English as a global language has urged the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) to implement some reforms in relation to textbook design and curriculum development as well as the approaches to and goals of English language teaching (ELT). From the multilingual perspective, Global Englishes (GE) and translanguaging have both challenged the traditional native-oriented goal of ELT. Based on the level of language policy planning in the multilingual Greater Bay Area of China, this paper addresses the need to incorporate GE and translanguaging into textbook design and curriculum development. Referring to Byram’s framework of cultural content in textbooks, and to the GE proposal of exposure of multilingualism/multiculturalism and respect of diverse culture and identity in ELT, the paper further reports a case study to analyse the cultural content of the textbook, Speaking Critically: Intercultural Conversation . The paper also explores university students’ attitudes towards the integration of Chinese local culture into textbooks. The paper ends by addressing some challenges associated with translating GE and translanguaging into textbook design and curriculum development, and it provides further implications of such a proposal.

Abstract:This paper investigates the potential of translanguaging as a dynamic pedagogical strategy in English teaching for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. Translanguaging, the strategic use of multiple languages in language acquisition, recognises and embraces learners' linguistic diversity. The study explores the theoretical background of translanguaging and its practical application in EFL teaching, examining its cognitive, social, and emotional benefits. Additionally, challenges and considerations for implementing translanguaging in the EFL classroom are discussed, addressing potential obstacles such as teacher beliefs, language policies, and assessment practices. Practical strategies and activities are provided to help teachers effectively incorporate translanguaging into their teaching practices. By examining translanguaging's role in EFL teaching, this research paper contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of its potential as a pedagogical tool and promotes more inclusive and effective language learning environments.

Abstract:Teacher-researcher collaborative inquiry helps illuminate contextual demands and affordances of teaching and learning and how they shape and inform theory and practice. Elaborating on a university-school study in a Mandarin-English dual language bilingual education (DLBE) programme in the U.S., we examine how the researcher worked alongside a Grade 3 Mandarin teacher in implementing translanguaging approaches across different content areas. We focus particularly on critical moments of dissonance in their research partnership that capture their changing understandings and constant negotiations of translanguaging stance, design, and shifts. Through open and focused coding of qualitative data, we identified both parties' evolving perspectives and teaching/research practices. Ambivalence, doubts, and contradictions characterised their collaboration process as both researcher and teacher wrestled with what translanguaging means to Chinese education within a DLBE context where English hegemony reigns both inside and outside school. Important critical moments are highlighted to illuminate how the pair gradually developed a shared understanding about the need for a more comprehensive, critical, and contextualised lens to translanguaging pedagogies and to learn how to orchestrate translanguaging spaces in DLBE programmes while privileging students' use of Mandarin.

Translanguaging in the planning of academic and creative writing: A case of adult Japanese EFL learners

Abstract:Foreign language (FL) writing has undergone a number of key evolutions over the past 50 years. But despite attempts toward a reframing of FL learners as emergent bilinguals, bilingual languaging strategies such as translanguaging are still rarely seen in most FL education contexts, and bilingual composition strategies are yet to become integrated into mainstream FL writing education as a result. The goal of the present study was thus to investigate the effects of weak and strong forms of translanguaging on the production of Japanese EFL students’ academic and creative composition pieces. The findings suggest that by allowing FL learners to engage in strong translanguaging practices, removing the “barriers” between named languages, during the planning stage of their English composition, learners are able to score higher than those who were forced to use one language over the other (either the target language or their native language). They were also able to produce more concise, well-formed essays with fewer misused lexical items from a lack of relevant language knowledge or experiences.

Abstract:Translanguaging pedagogy has gained attention in recent years in language education; yet, there is limited research on how it is utilized and perceived by university students in Thailand. This study therefore examines the translanguaging practices and perceptions of Thai university students regarding incorporating such practices in classrooms with strict language boundary policy. The mixed method study analyzes questionnaire (N=77), observation and interview (N=10) data from students using descriptive statistics and qualitative content analysis, respectively. While this study participants are only those observed to practice translanguaging in the classroom, however, the results indicated that only 84% of the students found translanguaging (i.e., using their L1 and other repertoire resources) in the classroom for content learning and meaning-making beneficial, while the others (16%) still prefer a strict English only practice. Moreover, the results showed the students’ overall positive views on incorporating translanguaging in different classroom situations to assist low proficiency students’ learning and enhance classroom interaction and participation since most of Thai teachers frequently use their L1 with students. Some students further highlighted challenges in implementing this strategy in Thailand, despite its practical benefits for English language education in Thailand. The study also highlights the implications of this practice for Thailand and beyond.

Abstract:There has been a rich literature on the role of language in learning and on its role in knowledge (co-)construction in the science classroom. This literature, rooted in social semiotics theories and sociocultural theories, discussed research conducted largely in contexts where students are learning content in their first language (L1). In this paper, we draw on concepts from this literature to analyse science lessons in an L2 (second/foreign language) context and discuss how these concepts can be further built on and extended to understand the role of languaging and translanguaging in knowledge (co-)construction and academic language learning in CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) classrooms, where students are learning content in their L2.

Abstract:This article discusses recent changes in Chinese as a second/foreign language (CSL/FL) teaching and research with particular attention to the following: the diversification of contexts for CSL/FL learning in terms of the linguistic, cultural, educational, professional, and social needs of learners; the advances in language learning research over the past 25 years that can provide a principled rather than an ad hoc basis for informing choices teachers make in their classrooms, specific areas include interlanguage, developmental sequences, pedagogical grammar, conversation, and culture. Implications of these changes are considered in relation to the beliefs of CSL/FL teachers. The article is intended as a synthesis and evaluation of language teaching research that can contribute to the neglected field of CSL/FL. It begins with a brief overview of the current status of CSL/FL both inside and outside Greater China.
