Abstract:In the framework of axiomatic fuzzy sets theory, we first study how to impersonally and automatically determine the membership functions for fuzzy sets according to original data and facts, and a new algorithmic framework of determining membership functions and their logic operations for fuzzy sets has been proposed. Then, we apply the proposed algorithmic framework to give a new clustering algorithm and show that the algorithm is feasible. A number of illustrative examples show that this approach offers a far more flexible and effective means for the intelligent systems in real-world applications. Compared with popular fuzzy clustering algorithms, such as c-means fuzzy algorithm and k-nearest-neighbor fuzzy algorithm, the new fuzzy clustering algorithm is more simple and understandable, the data types of the attributes can be various data types or subpreference relations, even descriptions of human intuition, and the distance function and the class number need not be given beforehand.

Abstract: In this chapter, we apply the AFS theory to propose an elementary algorithm of fuzzy clustering. In the proposed approach, each cluster is interpreted by taking advantage of the semantics captured by the AFS logic. Within the framework of AFS theory, we develop new techniques of feature selection, concept categorization and characteristic description (i.e.,the characteristic description of an object or a group of objects using the fuzzy concepts) which are often encountered in tasks of machine learning and pattern recognition. The elementary fuzzy clustering algorithm is evolved to three more elaborate fuzzy clustering techniques by incorporating new techniques of feature selection, concept categorization and characteristic description. We show that they are simpler and produce more interpretable results when contrasted with some existing techniques. Several benchmark data and the evaluation data of 30 companies are considered to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed AFS fuzzy clustering algorithms. We provide a detailed comparative analysis in which we compare the obtained results with those produced by some “conventional” methods such as FCM, k-means, and some newer algorithms including a two-level SOM-based clustering algorithm. The proposed algorithms can be applied to the data sets with mixed features such as sub-preference relations and even those including descriptions of human intuitive judgment. We show that the flexibility of the approach comes from the fact that the distance function and the class number need not be given beforehand. These two facets offers a far more higher flexible and contribute to a powerful framework for representing human knowledge and studying intelligent systems encountered in real world applications.

Abstract:In this paper, firstly we study the representations and fuzzy logic operations for the fuzzy concepts in real data systems. Secondly, we propose a new fuzzy association rule mining algorithm in the framework of AFS (Axiomatic Fuzzy Sets) theory. Compared with the current algorithms, the advantage of proposed algorithm has two advantages. One is that the membership functions of the fuzzy sets representing the extracted rules and the fuzzy logic operations applied to extract fuzzy rules are determined by the distribution of the data, instead of the fuzzy sets defined by some special functions, t -norm, t -conorm, negation operator, implication operator and fuzzy similarity relation given in advance. The extracted fuzzy rules are interpretable and similar to human intuition. Another is that its simplicity in implementation and mathematical beauty in fuzzy theory, and can be directly applied to extract fuzzy association rules in real data systems. Finally, a well-known example Iris dataset is used to illustrate the effectiveness of the new algorithm based on the proposed degrees of implication. We obtained reclassification accuracy 98 %.

Abstract:In the framework of AFS(Axiomatic Fuzzy Sets) theory,study a new clustering algorithm(FCA_AFS) and give a cluster validity index by which we can figure out the optimal number of clusters and the parameter values reaching maximal accurate rate.Compared with other clustering algorithms,the FCA_AFS algorithm can work out the cluster descriptions which are represented by some fuzzy sets with definitely semantic interpretations,and then every sample is clustered into the corresponding cluster according to the membership degrees belonging to the fuzzy sets.Not only has it avoided the complicated optimization problem that other fuzzy clustering algorithm have to resolve,but also the cluster number need not be given in advance.Evaluate the performance of the FCA_AFS algorithm using three well-known benchmark data sets—the Iris data,the Wine classification data,and Wisconsin breast cancer data to verify the clustering practicality and effectiveness.

Abstract:This paper presents a brief review of the developments and applications about Fuzzy Cognitive Maps, data mining and AFS theory. It also analyses the limits of the researches in existence about the Fuzzy Cognitive Maps and points out that there is advantage using AFS theory to study Fuzzy Cognitive Maps. A set of rigorous, systemic and unitive analytic and design method about Fuzzy Cognitive maps would be given using this way. Abstract:In this paper, firstly, we study the topology molecular lattice on * EI algebra over some concepts in the framework of AFS theory, and give the topology on the object set induced by the topology molecular lattice generated by some fuzzy concepts. Secondly we apply the topology to define a fuzzy similar relation on the object sets, and the Fuzzy Clustering Analysis is studied based on the proposed fuzzy similarity. The examples shows that the clustering results are similar to human intuition.

Abstract:In the framework of AFS (Axiomatic Fuzzy Sets) theory, We propose A novel weight fuzzy clustering algorithm, which is totally different from the traditional clustering algorithm based approaches. The novel weighted fuzzy clustering algorithm has three main advantages: Firstly, the procedures of the proposed algorithm are more transparent and understandable, and the clustering results not only have definite linguistic interpretation,but also have a weight assigned to each attribute in the cluster description to make the weightpsilas effect on the clustering reflect the importance of the attribute. Secondly, the predefined distance function and objective function are not required, and the cluster number need not be given in advance. Last, the data types of the features can be various data types or sub-preference relations,even human intuition descriptions. To evaluate the performance of the proposed weighted fuzzy clustering algorithm, we consider three well-known benchmark clustering problems-Iris data,Wine data and Wisconsin diagnostic breast cancer data.

Abstract:In this paper, the AFS fuzzy logic clustering algorithm (X.D. Liu, W. Wang and T.Y. Chai, IEEE Transaction on Systems, Man, Cybernetics, 2005) have be studied further by the improvement of the algorithm and the application of the algorithm to iris data (reference ftp://ftp.ics.uci.edu/pub/machine-learning-databases/Iris/). In stead of examples of less than 10 samples, we apply the improved algorithm to iris data which has 150 samples and just the order relationship of the samples on the attributes are used. This study shows that the AFS fuzzy logic clustering algorithm can obtain a high reclassification accuracy according to the order relationship. Thus the algorithm can be applied to the data sets in which the attributes are only described by order relationship

Abstract:In this paper, first, the AFS fuzzy logic clustering algorithm has been studied further. Then, based on the fuzzy implicator, an algorithm of selecting optimal subsets of relevant features for fuzzy clustering is proposed. Thus a new AFS fuzzy logic clustering algorithm is achieved. Finally, the proposed clustering algorithm is applied to the well known real-world wine data set. Experimental results demonstrate that a high clustering accuracy can be obtained by the proposed clustering algorithm only according to the order relations of the attributes, in stead of the numerical representations of the attributes. The proposed clustering algorithm can be applied to the data sets with various data types such as real numbers, Boolean values, partial orders, even human intuition descriptions.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel method to mine association rules for classification problems namely AFSRC (AFS association rules for classification) realized in the framework of the axiomatic fuzzy set (AFS) theory. This model provides a simple and efficient rule generation mechanism. It can also retain meaningful rules for imbalanced classes by fuzzifying the concept of the class support of a rule. In addition, AFSRC can handle different data types occurring simultaneously. Furthermore, the new model can produce membership functions automatically by processing available data. An extensive suite of experiments are reported which offer a comprehensive comparison of the performance of the method with the performance of some other methods available in the literature. The experimental result shows that AFSRC outperforms most of other methods when being quantified in terms of accuracy and interpretability. AFSRC forms a classifier with high accuracy and more interpretable rule base of smaller size while retaining a sound balance between these two characteristics. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence is the study of how computer systems can simulate intelligent processes such as learning, reasoning, and understanding symbolic information in context. Axiomatic Fuzzy Set (AFS) theory, in which fuzzy sets (membership functions) and their logic operations are determined by a consistent algorithm according to the distributions of original data and the semantics of the fuzzy concepts, is applied to study some new techniques of feature selection, concept categorization and characteristic description; problems often encountered in artificial intelligence area such as machine learning and pattern recognition. These techniques developed under the framework of AFS theory in this paper are more simple and more interpretable than the conventional methods, since they imitate the human recognition process. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the feature selection, the concept categorization and the characteristic description, these new techniques are applied to fuzzy clustering problems. Several benchmark data sets are used for this purpose. Clustering accuracies are comparable with or superior to the conventional algorithms such as FCM, k-means, and the new algorithm such as single point iterative weighted fuzzy C-means clustering algorithm.

Abstract:An important class of data mining problems is clustering. The traditional clustering algorithm is a kind of hard partition and it parts strictly each object into some cluster. But the real object is not always having distinct attributes, so fuzzy theory is introduced to deal with it. In this paper an improved algorithm is introduced based on the research of fuzzy theory and other clustering algorithms. It is introduced on the base of improving the FCM algorithm and used to analyzing the data that are from the environment detecting system. The result is encouraging.

Abstract:The attributes in database are very important information. However, sometimes they cannot be applied efficiently. What we concern about is how to make use of them as much as possible. AFS theory is a new analytic method of fuzzy mathematics. The membership functions of AFS theory are obtained by a uniform arithmetic according to the original data. AFS theory and closeness degree functions are combined to analyze the relation of the attributes in database. Using AFS theory and fuzzy inference methods, a new fuzzy inference method is proposed. At the same time, we get a method of attribute reduction. The results are very similar to human intuition and show that the methods are convenient for data mining and attributes analyzing.

Abstract:In the framework of Axiomatic Fuzzy Set (AFS) theory, we propose a new approach to data clustering. The objective of this clustering is to adhere to some principles of grouping exercised by humans when determining a structure in data. Compared with other clustering approaches, the proposed approach offers more detailed insight into the cluster's structure and the underlying decision making process. This contributes to the enhanced interpretability of the results via the representation capabilities of AFS theory. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated by using real-world data, and the obtained results show that the performance of the clustering is comparable with other fuzzy rule-based clustering methods, and benchmark fuzzy clustering methods FCM and K-means. Experimental studies have shown that the proposed fuzzy clustering method can discover the clusters in the data and help specify them in terms of some comprehensive fuzzy rules.
