Abstract:With numerical calculations, the plasma conditions, in which the laser gains of 1s3d 1D2 ‐ 1s2p 1P1 transition of He‐like aluminum ions can be produced, have been obtained. The method of radiative cooling used to produce the necessary plasma conditions has also been proposed and simulated.

Abstract:A most recent measurement of the Kα opacity of a laser produced aluminum plasma [Xu Y, Zhang J, Yang J, Pei W, Ding Y, Lai D, et al. A clean radiation environment for opacity measurements of radiatively heated material. Phys Plasmas 2007;14:052701-5] has been theoretically studied by a detailed level accounting (DLA) model. The Kα lines both of Li-like and Be-like aluminum were calculated and used to perform detailed diagnostics to the plasma temperature. Atomic levels and oscillator strengths of the relevant ions were generated by solving the fully relativistic Dirac–Fock equation with configuration interaction within one-configuration being considered. Since the experimental plasma was well kept in local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE), we solve the Saha equations to calculate the populations both between and within charge states. The aluminum plasma has reached so high a temperature of about 95eV that the populations of the Rydberg states of the Li-like and Be-like ions become considerably large and the Kα satellites become the dominating features. By best fitting to the measured spectrum the plasma temperature is determined to be 95eV. However fairly large uncertainties of ±5eV are found.

Abstract:High temperature aluminum plasmas have been produced by irradiating the layered Au–Al foils with the smoothed high power laser at the Xingguang II laser facility. High-resolution transmission spectrum of the Al plasma has been measured by using penta-erythritol tetrakis (hydroxymethy) methane C(CH2OH)4 crystal spectrometer. Absorption lines of the aluminum ion transition 1s−np(n=3,4,5) in the region of 0.61–0.70 nm, have been observed and identified. The unresolved transition array model has been introduced to calculate the transmission spectra of aluminum plasma. The measured transmission spectrum has been compared with those calculated.

Abstract:Eight beams of 0.35-microm laser with pulse duration of about 1.0 ns and energy of 260 J per beam were injected into a cylindrical cavity to generate intense x-ray radiation on the Shengguang II high power laser facility. Plastic foils with a thickness in the range of about 3.0-45 microm were attached on the diagnostic hole of the cavity and ablated by the intense x-ray radiation. The radiative energy transport through plastic foils with different thicknesses has been studied experimentally. The burn-through time of the plastic foils has been obtained. For comparison, we also simulated the experimental results with Planckian and non-Planckian x-ray spectrum source, respectively. It is shown that for thick plastic foil the simulation with non-Planckian x-ray spectrum source is in good agreement with the experiment.

Abstract:Energetic laser-accelerated ions can heat a small solid-density sample homogeneously to temperatures over 10,000 K in less than a nanosecond. During this brief heating time, the electron temperature of the sample rises first, and then the ion temperature increases owing to the heat transfer between the hot electrons and cold ions. Since energy deposition from the incident heavy ion beam continues concurrently with the electron-ion relaxation process within the heated sample, the electron and ion temperatures do not reach equilibrium until the end of the heating. Here we calculate the temperature evolutions of electrons and ions within a dense aluminum sample heated by a laser-accelerated gold ions using the two-temperature model. For these calculations, we use the published stopping power data, known electron-ion coupling factors, and the SESAME equation-of-state (EOS) table for aluminum. For the first time, we investigate the electron and ion temperature distributions within the warm dense aluminum sample and the heating uniformity throughout the entire heating period. We anticipate that knowledge of the temperature evolution during heating will allow for the study of the stopping power, thermal conductivity, EOS, and opacity of warm dense matter heated by an energetic heavy ion beam.

Abstract:With the help of radiation hydrodynamic code Flash,we simulated the ablation process of a small focal-spot nano-second laser irradiation on an aluminum planar target.The irradiating laser has a focal spot radius of 25μm and maximum intensi-ty of about 1013 W/cm2 with wavelength of 532 nm.In our simulations,it is observed that electron density in the laser channel is relatively lower than the ambient one in some coronal region.This phenomenon is found to be sensitive to the electron heat con-duction model.By comparing simulation results with our experimental electron density profiles,flux limit factor of 0.08 is then determined in our simulation.The annular j et also occurs in our simulations and experiments.The mechanism of annular j et for-mation is analyzed and discussed,which is mainly related to the radiative cooling.

Abstract:The evolutions of the electron temperatures of aluminum plasmas produced with 0.351 mu m laser are simulated by means of one-dimensional hydrodynamic code. The simulations show that the plasma geometry has strong influence on the electron temperature's evolution while the effect of the flux limiter is not so significant. The simulations are in good agreement with the experiments only at some spatial points. A full comparison between the simulations and experiments indicates that the one-dimensional code is not accurate enough to characterize the laser-produced plasmas. A post-processor code based on the hydro code is developed to generate the streak image of the Thomson scattering spectra, which can be directly compared with the experimental data.

Abstract:We report precision measurement of aluminum atoms ${^{2}P_{1/2}}-{^{2}S_{1/2}}$ transition at 394 nm and ${^{2}P_{3/2}}-{^{2}S_{1/2}}$ transition at 396 nm in a hollow-cathode lamp (HCL). Both absorption spectroscopy and saturated absorption spectroscopy (SAS) are performed. From the absorption spectroscopy the Doppler linewidth is estimated to be 2.6 GHz. The SAS spectroscopy is analyzed based on the velocity-changing-effect model. With a frequency comb calibrated wavemeter, the frequencies of ${^{2}P_{1/2}},{F=3}-{^{2}S_{1/2}},{F=2}$ transition and ${^{2}P_{3/2}},{F=4}-{^{2}S_{1/2}},{F=3}$ transition are measured to be 759.905401(10) THz and 756.547403(10) THz, respectively. The hyperfine structure constants of aluminum atoms are determined and compared with previously reported measurement results and theoretical calculation. Reasonable agreement is found for the magnetic dipole constant (A constant), while the electric quadrupole constant (B constant) has a large deviation.

Abstract:The spatial and temporal evolutions of nonlocal heat transport in laser-produced aluminum plasmas are studied with the improvements of the Thomson scattering experiments and the kinetic Fokker–Planck simulations. The results are compared with the hydrodynamic simulations with the classical Spitzer–Härm theory. When another heater beam is used, the electron temperature decreases slowly and the temperature gradient becomes steep in the conduction zone. The nonlocal heat flux can be sustained at a high value with slow decrease for long time. The Fokker–Planck simulations considering electron-electron collisions can well describe the nonlocal heat transport process in laser-produced plasmas.

Abstract:Experimental measurements of the population inversion in the He-like Al and Mg ions are presented for the pumping laser intensity range of 10(13) approximately 10(14) W / CM2. The effects of different target structure (foil, plane and half-cylinder) on the 2p-3d population inversion of the He-like Al ions (45 angstrom) in a spot focused laser plasma have been studied experimentally. The 3d-4f population inversion of He-like Mg ions (154.6 angstrom) has also been measured in a line-shaped laser plasma by using a space resolved pinhole crystal spectrometer. The plasma parameters, such as electron temperature, electron density and the ratio of H-like ion density to Hc-like ion density, arc diagnosed by spectroscopic methods. Results are compared with C-R model calculations.

Abstract:In a recent experiment on the Trident laser facility, a laser-driven beam of quasi-monoenergetic aluminum ions was used to heat solid gold and diamond foils isochorically to 5.5 eV and 1.7 eV, respectively. Here theoretical calculations are presented that suggest the gold and diamond were heated uniformly by these laser-driven ion beams. According to calculations and SESAME equation-of-state tables, laser-driven aluminum ion beams achievable on Trident, with a finite energy spread of (delta E)/E ~ 20%, are expected to heat the targets more uniformly than a beam of 140 MeV aluminum ions with zero energy spread. The robustness of the expected heating uniformity relative to the changes in the incident ion energy spectra is evaluated, and expected plasma temperatures of various target materials achievable with the current experimental platform are presented.

Abstract:We present relativistic multi-configuration Dirac-Fock calculations for the energies and oscillator strengths of He-like Al11+ ion within a dense plasma. The average-atom ion-sphere potential and the uniform electron gas model potential are used to represent the interaction between the charge particles. Self-consistent calculations of dense plasma effects on the atomic structure, based on the above two potentials, are also carried out using EPPP package，based on the Flexible Atomic Code for comparison purposes. While we find consistency between our two kinds of theoretical predictions, a discrepancy persists with the calculations of Li and Rosmej [Europhys. Lett. 99, 33001 (2012)]. We also present the line shifts of 1s2p→1s2 transition to compare with the recent measurements of Stillman et al. [Phys. Rev. E 95, 063204 (2017)]. Agreement between theory and experiment is far from perfect, the experimental values are generally 2.2 times higher than our predictions. A qualitative analysis of the physical reasons for such differences is given. Further precise measurements and systematic elaborate calculations are needed to support spectral analysis.
A stable 2 W continuous-wave 261.5 nm laser for cooling and trapping aluminum monochloride

Abstract:We present a high-power tunable deep-ultraviolet (DUV) laser that uses two consecutive cavity enhanced doubling stages with LBO and CLBO crystals to produce the fourth harmonic of an amplified homebuilt external cavity diode laser. The system generates up to 2.75 W of 261.5 nm laser light with a ~2 W stable steady-state output power and performs second harmonic generation in a largely unexplored high intensity regime in CLBO for continuous wave DUV light. We use this laser to perform fluorescence spectroscopy on the $X^1\Sigma\leftarrow A^1\Pi$ transition in a cold, slow beam of AlCl molecules and probe the $A^{1} \Pi|v'=0,~J'=1>$ state hyperfine structure for future laser cooling and trapping experiments. This work demonstrates that the production of tunable, watt-level DUV lasers is becoming routine for a variety of wavelength-specific applications in atomic, molecular and optical physics.

Abstract:We report on the novel creation of a solid density aluminum plasma using free electron laser radiation at 13.5 nm wavelength. Ultrashort pulses of 30 fs duration and 47 {micro}J pulse energy were focused on a spot of 25 {micro}m diameter, yielding an intensity of 3 x 10{sup 14} W/cm{sup 2} on the bulk Al-target. The radiation emitted from the plasma was measured using a high resolution, high throughput EUV spectrometer. The analysis of both bremsstrahlung and line spectra results in an estimated electron temperature of (30 {+-} 10) eV, which is in very good agreement with radiation hydrodynamics simulations of the laser-target-interaction. This demonstrates the feasibility of exciting plasmas at warm dense matter conditions using EUV free electron lasers and their accurate characterization by EUV spectroscopy.

Abstract:Aluminum monochloride (AlCl) has been proposed as an excellent candidate for laser cooling. Here we present absorption spectroscopy measurements on the $A^1\Pi \leftarrow X^1\Sigma^+$ transition in AlCl inside a cryogenic helium buffer-gas beam cell. The high resolution absorption data enables a rigorous, quantitative comparison with our high-level ab initio calculations of the electronic and rovibronic energies, providing a comprehensive picture of the AlCl quantum structure. The combination of high resolution spectral data and theory permits the evaluation of spectroscopic constants and associated properties, like equilibrium bond length, with an order of magnitude higher precision. Based on the measured molecular equilibrium constants of the $A^1\Pi$ state, we estimate a Franck-Condon factor of the $A^1\Pi \leftarrow X^1\Sigma^+$ of 99.88%, which confirms that AlCl is amenable to laser cooling.

Interactions and cold collisions of AlF in the ground and excited electronic states with He

Abstract:Aluminium monofluoride (AlF) is a promising candidate for laser cooling and the production of dense ultracold molecular gases, thanks to its relatively high chemical stability and diagonal Frank-Condon factors. In this study, we examine the interactions and collisions of AlF in its $X^1\Sigma^+$, $a^3\Pi$, and $A^{1}\Pi$ electronic states with ground-state He using state-of-the-art \textit{ab initio} quantum chemistry techniques. We construct accurate potential energy surfaces (PESs) employing either the explicitly correlated coupled-cluster CCSD(T)-F12 method augmented by the CCSDT correction or the multireference configuration-interaction method for higher-excited electronic states. Subsequently, we employ these PESs in coupled-channel calculations to determine the scattering cross-sections for AlF+He collisions and bound states of the complex. We estimate the uncertainty of the calculated PESs and apply it to assess the uncertainty of the scattering results. We find a relatively low sensitivity of the cross-sections to the variation of the PESs, but the positions of shape resonances remain uncertain. The present results are relevant for further improvements and optimizations of buffer-gas cooling of AlF molecules.

Abstract:A prototype laser ion source that could demonstrate the possibility of producing intense pulsed high charge state ion beams has been established with a commercial Nd:YAG laser (E max = 3 J, 1064 nm, 8-10 ns) to produce laser plasma for the research of Laser Ion Source (LIS). At the laser ion source test bench, high purity (99.998 %) aluminum and lead targets have been tested for laser plasma experiment. An Electrostatic Ion Analyzer (EIA) and Electron Multiply Tube (EMT) detector were used to analyze the charge state and energy distribution of the ions produced by the laser ion source. The maximum charge states of Al12+ and Pb7+ were achieved. The results will be presented and discussed in this paper.

Abstract:Aluminum monofluoride (AlF) is a suitable molecule for laser cooling and trapping. Such experiments require extensive spectroscopic characterization of the electronic structure. Two of the theoretically predicted higher-lying triplet states of AlF, the counterparts of the well-characterized D1Δ and E1Π states, had not been experimentally identified yet. We here report on the characterization of the d3Π (v = 0-6) and e3Δ (v = 0-2) states, confirming the predicted energetic ordering of these states (J. Chem. Phys. 1988, 88, 5715-5725), as well as of the f3Σ+ (v = 0-2) state. The transition intensity of the d3Π, v = 3 - a3Π, v = 3 band is negligibly small. This band gets its weak, unexpected rotational structure via intensity borrowing from the nearby e3Δ, v = 2 - a3Π, v = 3 band, made possible via spin-orbit and spin-rotation interaction between the d3Π and e3Δ states. This interaction affects the equilibrium rotational constants in both states; their deperturbed values yield equilibrium internuclear distances that are consistent with the observations. We determined the ionization potential of AlF to be 78,492(1) cm-1 by ionization from the d3Π state.

Abstract:The time dependence of the x-ray absorption of aluminum samples heated with intense radiation sources from a foam-buffered gold hohlraum has been studied in this work. Hydrodynamic simulations were used to illustrate the plasma conditions in the plastic-tamped aluminum foils contained in this type of hohlraum. Experiments were conducted to measure the K -shell x-ray absorption spectra of the aluminum sample. With densities taken from the hydrodynamic simulations, electron temperatures were then inferred by fitting the measured absorption spectra with detailed-term-accounting calculations. The inferred temperatures have a maximum of about 93eV and were found to agree within 25% with the simulated results at times after 1ns , indicating that the use of foam shields, together with a compact cavity, has created a clean and high-temperature radiation source preferable to opacity measurements.

Abstract:High-quality single-crystalline aluminum films have been grown on Si(111) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. The x-ray diffraction rocking curve of the (111) plane of the Al film shows a full width at half maximum of 564 arc sec for the sample grown at 100 °C, where the surface is atomically flat with a root-mean-square roughness of 0.40 nm in a scanned area of 3 × 3 μm2. By using such a high-quality Al film, we have demonstrated a room temperature ultraviolet surface-plasmon-polariton nanolaser at a wavelength of 360 nm with a threshold as low as ∼0.2 MW/cm2, which provides a powerful evidence for potential application of the single-crystalline Al film in plasmonic devices.

Abstract:An extensive configuration interaction (CI) scheme and the R-matrix method are combined to calculate the x-ray transmission spectrum for high-power laser-produced Al plasmas in local thermodynamic equilibrium by using the detailed-term-accounting (DTA) approximation. All atomic parameters such as state levels and photoabsorption cross sections for different ionization stages are obtained by using the CI and R-matrix method. Special attention is given to the effects of autoionizing resonance broadening on the transmission. A large difference exists between the convergence of the results with and without taking account of autoionizing resonance broadening when the autoionization resonance broadening is the major broadening mechanism. This shows that autoionizing resonance widths of the K-shell excited states have large effects and should be considered to interpret the spectral-resolved transmission.
