Transit Signal Priority Strategy For Intersections Without Bus-Lane

Abstract:Recently, the bus priority infrastructures have been greatly developed in China, with the research and practice on traffic signal priority being relative few. In regard to this, a transit signal priority strategy for isolated intersections without bus-lane was developed. Designed to give priority to buses without seriously disturbing the general traffic flow, the control strategy included three categories of phase transition rules: rules based on bus priority and green utilization, rules for phase transition between rings, rules based on bus priority for initial green phase generation. Simulation tests conducted by VISSIM and VisVAP indicate that in the case of different traffic volumes, the isolated transit signal priority strategy ensures a lower delay for the buses, and decreases weighted average delay between buses and general traffic through the intersection.
