Abstract:Traditionally, reduced-scale physical models have been used to evaluate the performance and risk assessment for water control structures. This approach is reliable; however, it is expensive and time-consuming. As an alternative, this paper presents application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling on the design optimization and performance evaluation of low head gated spillways in South Florida. Two cases studies are demonstrated, (a) risk assessment of various scenarios for erosion control downstream of S5AS Spillway under extreme flow conditions, and (b) optimization of the replacement design of S49 Spillway. In both cases, CFD simulation results of different design, construction, and operation scenarios are used to optimize the pressure field, velocity distribution, and potential scouring impact. This study illustrates that CFD, as a suitable tool, can help accelerate the process of design optimization and refurbishment of a large number of new and existing structures in a cost-effective manner.
