Abstract:High-speed train (HST) is a fast, reliable, and environmental-friendly transportation means for medium to long-distance travel. HST drivers need to continuously keep alert for a few hours, detect potential hazards in time and make quick reactions, and strictly follow standard operating procedures. The objectives of this study were to identify the key factors that are related to HST drivers' operation performance, to propose a validated prediction model, and to provide practical management suggestions to improve performance. Six focus groups with 22 HST drivers and 18 frontline managers and a questionnaire survey with 243 HST drivers were conducted to collect qualitative and quantitative data concerning the potential influencing factors. A prediction model with seven key predictors was then developed and validated to distinguish high and low-performance HST drivers. Accordingly, management guidelines were proposed based for HST frontline managers to improve their drivers' operation performance by optimizing the three scheduling factors, such as adjusting sleep duration, intermittent rest duration, and HST-type switching frequency; and managing the four non-scheduling factors, such as periodically checking HST drivers' health condition, frustration, and fatigue, and providing corresponding interventions. Relevance to industry: Findings of the study provide practical management guidelines based on the obtained high-speed train drivers' operation performance prediction model.

Abstract:The stress level of high-speed rail (HSR) train drivers directly impacts their job performance and thus the safety of HSR operations. This paper attempts to develop a quantitative understanding of train drivers' stress levels and the contributing factors by the experimental study conducted in a realistic HSR simulator. An extensive statistical analysis found that the ultra-short-term heart rate variability metrics could differentiate different stress levels. Three different machine-learning classifiers were evaluated for stress detection, including support vector machine (SVM), random forests (RF), and K-nearest neighbour (KNN). The RF model was shown to perform the best in terms of robustness and classification accuracy. Moreover, the research found that the driver's stress level should be detected rather than the type of stressor. The findings from this research could contribute to the development of real-time HSR driver condition monitoring systems and the improvement of current HSR operation safety regulations.

Abstract:With the development of intelligent transportation, it has become mainstream for drivers and automated systems to cooperate to complete train driving tasks. Human-machine trust has become one of the biggest challenges in achieving safe and effective human-machine cooperative driving. Accurate evaluation of human-machine trust is of great significance to calibrate human-machine trust, realize trust management, reduce safety accidents caused by trust bias, and achieve performance and safety goals. Based on typical driving scenarios of high-speed trains, this paper designs a train fault judgment experiment. By adjusting the machine's reliability, the driver's trust is cultivated to form their cognition of the machine. When the driver's cognition is stable, data from the Trust in Automated (TIA) scale and modes of physiological information, including electrodermal activity (EDA), electrocardiograms (ECG), respiration (RSP), and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), are collected during the fault judgment experiment. Based on analysis of this multi-modal physiological information, a human-machine trust classification model for high-speed train drivers is proposed. The results show that when all four modes of physiological information are used as input, the random forest classification model is most accurate, reaching 93.14%. This indicates that the human-machine trust level of the driver can be accurately represented by physiological information, thus inputting the driver's physiological information into the classification model outputs their level of human-machine trust. The human-machine trust classification model of high-speed train drivers built in this paper based on multi-modal physiological information establishes the corresponding relationship between physiological trust and human-machine trust level. Human-machine trust level is characterized by physiological trust monitoring, which provides support for the dynamic management of trust.

Abstract:There is no uniform ride comfort evaluation method of high-speed trains in current research. This study presented a model to evaluate subjective comfort depending on 6 influence factors of ride comfort. Based on NASA-TLX, a train ride comfort index was developed and used to collect data from participants. Weights of each factors and comfort scores were calculated by multi-dimensional overall comfort algorithm. Experimental results show that reliability and validity of the TRCX was acceptable, ensuring effective input variables of the model. Based on these findings, a subjective evaluation software system of trains ride comfort was developed to demonstrate the usability in practical application.
Contributing Factors to Fatigue among High-Speed Train Drivers: A Questionnaire Study in China

Abstract:Based on global statistics from 1993 to 2017, most railway accidents were caused by human errors, and drivers’ unsafe operation was one of the most common types of human errors ( Liu et al., 2019). One of the main contributing factors to drivers’ unsafe operations is driver fatigue. Therefore, it's essential to evaluate the level of fatigue among High-speed train (HST) drivers and identify the main influencing factors of fatigue. We designed a questionnaire that used the subjective score of SSS to assess the fatigue of HST drivers . A follow-up questionnaire survey was conducted with 243 HST drivers, and then exploratory factor analysis and hierarchical regression was conducted to determine the significant influencing factors of fatigue and form a prediction model. The results showed that HST drivers' personal characteristics (health status, personal trait score, number of chronic diseases), sleep, and working task (communicate task, lookout task) had significant effect on fatigue. The outcome of this research provided the main influencing factors of HST drivers’ fatigue and proposed an effective prediction model to promote structural understanding of HST drivers’ fatigue.

Abstract:High-speed railway is seeking for a higher safety level than other public transports because of more passengers and higher speed. However, sleepiness and fatigue occur more frequently for train drivers due to longer operation time and irregular shift schedule. In the paper, we focus on study the particularity of train drivers' fatigue under the environment of high-speed railway. We observed operation performance and evaluated the degree of fatigue using train drivers' visual characteristics, while they conducted various tasks on high-speed railway driver simulator. By analyzing self-report sleepiness scales, detection distance and eye movement data, we found that pupil diameter, blink time and fixation percentage of fatigue drivers were significantly different from that of sober drivers. Meanwhile, we revealed obvious individual difference of train drivers and proposed a personalized database for train drivers' fatigue identification. These quantitative results can be used as a preliminary study for designing human-train interface of highspeed railway.

Abstract:With the development of high-speed railway automatic train operation(ATO) systems, the automatic operation system gradually replaces the work and responsibilities of traditional drivers. Under the parallel intelligent method, a real-time rescheduling model combined ATO driving strategy is proposed to restore the train operation from the delay caused by disturbance. The objective of the proposed model is to minimize the total delay when disturbance occurs. We use a commercial solver to solve our model. Finally, two numerical cases are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed model.

Abstract:The overall comfort of train passenger is influenced by many environmental factors such as vibration, noise and pressure. However, the couple effect of these influencing factors causes the difficulty in evaluating the overall comfort. This study revealed the potential comfort degradation mechanisms in high-speed railway environments and proposed a machine learning evaluation model to assess passenger comfort. Here, the subjective overall comfort ratings and the electroencephalography (EEG) of twenty passengers were collected in the field tests. Compared with passengers who were in a state of comfort, the brain areas (BA6/13/20/24/31/40/47) of passengers who felt uncomfortable were all significantly activated in the beta band. Based on the neural signature above, three related human reactions when passengers feel uncomfortable were recognized, including perceiving the environment, inducing negative emotions, and finally producing body movement intention. To assess the overall comfort of train passengers, six kinds of features extracted from EEG signals were used to train an evaluation model based on the LightGBM algorithm. This work offers a neurological explanation for the mechanisms of degradation of overall comfort and provides a novel and effective method to assess it.

Abstract:64 Chinese train drivers were recruited for the study of the relationships between their psychological capital,hope,resiliency,optimism and their mental health.Firstly,train drivers' hope and psychological capital separately had a negative forecast on all of the factors of SCL-90.Secondly,train drivers' resiliency demonstrated positive forecast on their interpersonal sensitivity and depression,and no effects on other variables.Lastly,the optimism of train drivers only showed negative forecasts on their depression.

Abstract:<p>Passengers' psychoacoustics annoyance in the rail system is an awareness factor. It would be associated with rail services development and optimization. At present, the interior acoustics only measured and considered under the A-weighted sound pressure level (dBA), and have less consideration on passengers' feelings. Therefore, it is necessary to apply a method for passengers' psychoacoustics annoyance evaluation. Zwicker's model has put forward the evaluation of psychoacoustic annoyance based on human hearing systems. Moreover, researchers have indicated that human brain activities and mental states can be reflected by the variation of sub-bands in electroencephalograph (EEG) under acoustics exposure. Therefore, the EEG sub-bands can be introduced for evaluating psychoacoustics annoyance on passengers. This study compares the interior acoustics in rail vehicles by Zwicker's model and proposes the new EEG psychoacoustic annoyance indices to calculate the passengers' psychoacoustics annoyance with EEG sub-bands under rail acoustics exposure. The loudness, sharpness and roughness of Zwicker's model are analysed. The validation of this index and the comparison existing features have been made from the experiment carried on the high-speed train. Moreover, the correlation coefficients have been made between Zwicker's model parameters and EEG indices. The results suggested the proposed index has good performance and can reflect the passengers' psychoacoustics annoyance in high-speed rail.</p>

Abstract:An on-board energy-efficient driving advisory system is proposed for a high-speed train, which runs on a vehicle control unit. A data interaction framework is presented to monitor train real-time state and temporary speed limitations. A bilevel optimal control method is designed to calculate the energy-optimal speed profile in real time. Specifically, the upper level is to calculate the min-time speed profile based on Pontryagin’s maximum principle, and the lower level is to determine coast profiles according to the Lagrange multiplier technique. The driving advice is extracted from the optimized trajectories. If the deviation of the train trajectory is detected, the speed profile is updated online. To highlight the achievable improvements of the proposed optimal control method, a pseudospectral method and a quadratic programming method are introduced as performance comparison. Simulation results show that the proposed method yields an energy-optimal solution within a control cycle of 256 ms. The driver-in-the-loop tests prove that the driving advice can be exactly followed by drivers. The proposed driver advisory system can improve the performance of punctuality and energy efficiency.

Abstract:With the continuous improvement of train speed, the automatic driving of trains instead of driver driving has become the development direction of rail transit in order to realize traffic automation. The application of single modeling methods for speed control in the automatic operation of high-speed trains lacks exploration of the com-bination of train operation data information and physical model, resulting in low system modeling accuracy, which impacts the effectiveness of speed control and the operation of high-speed trains. To further increase the dynamic modeling accuracy of high-speed train operation and the high-speed train's speed control effect, a high-speed train speed control method based on hybrid modeling of mechanism and data drive is put forward. Firstly, a model of the high-speed train's mechanism was created by analyzing the train's dynamics. Secondly, the improved kernel-principal component regression algorithm was used to create a data-driven model using the actual opera-tion data of the CRH3 (China Railway High-speed 3) high-speed train from Huashan North Railway Station to Xi'an North Railway Station of "Zhengxi High-speed Railway," completing the mechanism model compensation and the error correction of the speed of the actual operation process of the high-speed train, and realizing the hybrid modeling of mechanism and data-driven. Finally, the prediction Fuzzy PID control algorithm was devel-oped based on the natural line and train characteristics to complete the train speed control simulation under the hybrid model and the mechanism model, respectively. In addition, analysis and comparison analysis were conduct-ed. The results indicate that, compared to the high-speed train speed control based on the mechanism model, the high-speed train speed control based on hybrid modeling is more accurate, with an average speed control error reduced by 69.42%. This can effectively reduce the speed control error, improve the speed control effect and oper-ation efficiency, and demonstrate the efficacy of the hybrid modeling and algorithm. The research results can provide a new ideal of multi-model fusion modeling for the dynamic modeling of high-speed train operation, further improve control objectives such as safety, comfort, and efficiency of high-speed train operation, and pro-vide a reference for automatic driving and intelligent driving of high-speed trains.

Abstract:Aiming to solve the safety problems of high-speed railway operation and management, one new method is urgently needed to construct on the basis of the rough set theory and the uncertainty measurement theory. The method should carefully consider every factor of high-speed railway operation that realizes the measurement indexes of its safety operation. After analyzing the factors that influence high-speed railway safety operation in detail, a rough measurement model is finally constructed to describe the operation process. Based on the above considerations, this paper redistricts the safety influence factors of high-speed railway operation as 16 measurement indexes which include staff index, vehicle index, equipment index and environment. And the paper also provides another reasonable and effective theoretical method to solve the safety problems of multiple attribute measurement in high-speed railway operation. As while as analyzing the operation data of 10 pivotal railway lines in China, this paper respectively uses the rough set-based measurement model and value function model (one model for calculating the safety value) for calculating the operation safety value. The calculation result shows that the curve of safety value with the proposed method has smaller error and greater stability than the value function method's, which verifies the feasibility and effectiveness.

Abstract:Abstract With the improvement of the running speed of China's high-speed trains, the demands for running status monitoring and security assurance of High-speed Electric Multiple Units(EMU) have increased significantly. However, the current safety monitoring systems are independent, which is not conducive to the comprehensive monitoring and information sharing of the whole vehicle. The temperature monitoring of running gear is insensitive to early failures. How to develop a train operation safety monitoring system with strong engineering implementation and high integration is a key problem to be solved. For the monitoring of running stationarity, frame stability and running gear health of China's high-speed trains, an integrated safety monitoring system framework is designed, and the logic and algorithm for diagnosis of stationarity, stability and health states of rotating parts are constructed. A monitoring software which fused the temperature, high and low frequency vibration data is developed, and the design and installation of the vibration temperature composite sensors are completed. The research results have realized the integration and comprehensive processing of multiple monitoring systems, completed the improvement from single component and single vehicle level safety monitoring to multiple systems, vehicle level and interactive monitoring. In the process of real vehicle application, the developed monitoring system acquires the vehicle operation status data in real time and accurately. The constructed diagnosis algorithm and logic evaluate the vehicle operation status timely and accurately, and avoid the evolution from fault to accident. The research results show that the integrated safety monitoring system can provide technical support for train operation safety.

Abstract:This study revealed the mechanism of long-term passenger vibration discomfort in high-speed trains and proposed a novel evaluation model to assess it, while the most popular international standard ISO 2631-1 is unsuitable. Here, a field test was conducted to investigate the long-term passenger vibration comfort in high-speed trains under different operation environments by the measurement of the whole-body vibration (WBV) and the subjective ratings of passenger comfort. During the whole sitting period of high-speed train passengers, the phenomena 'compensatory degradation' and 'discomfort accumulation' were found, which meant that the brief termination of vibration cannot fundamentally alleviate passenger vibration comfort. And the vibration comfort can be evaluated by the product of exposure time and the novel vibration acceleration index we proposed. Meanwhile, high-speed trains with higher velocities or running in tunnel environments have higher frequency-weighted WBV amplitude than open-air and lower velocities, which caused more vibration discomfort of passengers. Practitioner Summary: This field study provided data support for ensuring the occupational health of train drivers whose work routes involve a large number of tunnels and improving passenger vibration comfort. Meanwhile, a novel idea was provided for evaluating the vibration comfort of passengers who prolonged exposure to low-amplitude environments.

Abstract:The vigilance of the driver is important for railway safety, despite not being included in the safety management system (SMS) for high-speed train safety. In this paper, a novel fatigue detection system for high-speed train safety based on monitoring train driver vigilance using a wireless wearable electroencephalograph (EEG) is presented. This system is designed to detect whether the driver is drowsiness. The proposed system consists of three main parts: (1) a wireless wearable EEG collection; (2) train driver vigilance detection; and (3) early warning device for train driver. In the first part, an 8-channel wireless wearable brain-computer interface (BCI) device acquires the locomotive driver's brain EEG signal comfortably under high-speed train-driving conditions. The recorded data are transmitted to a personal computer (PC) via Bluetooth. In the second step, a support vector machine (SVM) classification algorithm is implemented to determine the vigilance level using the Fast Fourier transform (FFT) to extract the EEG power spectrum density (PSD). In addition, an early warning device begins to work if fatigue is detected. The simulation and test results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed fatigue detection system for high-speed train safety.

Abstract:Road traffic accidents resulting in group deaths and injuries are often related to coach drivers' inappropriate operations and behaviors. Thus, the evaluation of coach drivers' fitness to drive is an important measure for improving the safety of public transportation. Previous related research focused on drivers' age and health condition. Comprehensive studies about commercial drivers' cognitive capacities are limited. This study developed a toolkit consisting of nine cognition measurements across driver perception/sensation, attention, and reaction. A total of 1413 licensed coach drivers in Jiangsu Province, China were investigated and tested. Results indicated that drivers with accident history within three years performed overwhelmingly worse (p<0.001) on dark adaptation, dynamic visual acuity, depth perception, attention concentration, attention span, and significantly worse (p<0.05) on reaction to complex tasks compared with drivers with clear accident records. These findings supported that in the assessment of fitness to drive, cognitive capacities are sensitive to the detection of drivers with accident proneness. We first developed a simple evaluation model based on the percentile distribution of all single measurements, which defined the normal range of "fit-to-drive" by eliminating a 5% tail of each measurement. A comprehensive evaluation model was later constructed based on the kernel principal component analysis, in which the eliminated 5% tail was calculated from on integrated index. Methods to categorizing qualified, good, and excellent coach drivers and criteria for evaluating and training Chinese coach drivers' fitness to drive were also proposed.
