Abstract:The dietary acid‐based load has been shown to be associated with bone status and several metabolic symptoms, such as hypertension and hypercholesterolemia. However, its association with obesity has not been explored. Our purpose was to examine the association between dietary acid‐based load, as assessed by potential food renal acid load (PRAL), and obesity among 29,520 Chinese adults aged 18–70 years old who participated in the 2002 China National Nutrition and Health Survey. Food intake in the last 24 hours was recorded for three consecutive days. PRAL was determined using an algorithm including dietary intakes of protein, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium. We observed that adults in the top quintile of the PRAL had a significantly higher body mass index (BMI, mean difference: 0.48¡À0.11 kg/m2, Ptrends<0.0001) and waist circumference (mean difference: 1.49¡À0.33cm, Ptrends<0.0001)) compared with adults in the bottom quintile, after adjusting for potential confounders. Comparing adults with the top to the bottom quintile of the PRAL, the multi‐adjusted odds ratio of obesity (BMI ¡Ý kg/m2) and abdominal obesity (WC ¡Ý 85 cm in men and ¡Ý 80 cm in women) was 1.37 (95%CI: 1.08–1.73, Ptrends=0.002) and 1.35 (1.16–1.58, Ptrends<0.0001), respectively. In conclusion greater dietary acid‐based load was associated with obesity in this nationally‐representative sample of Chinese adults.
