Abstract:Bioethanol produced from lignocellulosic materials as the substitute of petrol is being studied in many countries. The process of bioethanol production contains four main steps: pretreatment, enzyme hydrolysis of cellulose, fermentation, ethanol distillation. In the whole process, the most important step is pretreatment of lignocellulosic materials. Acidic wastewater from monosodium glutamate production process contains large amount of organic matter and has a low pH value. The feasibility of corn stover pretreated by acidic wastewater from monosodium glutamate process has been researched. In this paper corn stover pretreated by acidic wastewater at two conditions were researched: (1) 170 degrees C, 30 min, S/L=1:8, acid concentration 1.875%; (2) 170 degrees C, 60 min, S/L=1:20, acid concentration 0.75%. After pretreatment, the corn stover was compared by cellulose conversion at cellulase saccharification process and ethanol yield at simultaneous saccharification and fermentation process. In the cellulase saccharification process, the glucose increased sharply at the first 12 hr. the amount of glucose was kept at constant after 24 hr. In simultaneous saccharification and fermentation process, the glucose was consumed almost completed after 72 hr. The ethanol yield was increased with the time and reached the highest at 96 hr. The results showed that although the No.1 condition had higher cellulose conversion at cellulase saccharification process, it had lower ethanol yield at simultaneous saccharification and fermentation process. The ethanol yield of corn stover pretreated at the two conditions were 0.21 g/g corn stover and 0.27 g/g corn stover respectively, 78% and 97% of theoretical value. It showed that cellulase saccharification and simultaneous saccharification and fermentation process are two different processes, the simultaneous saccharification and fermentation process is more complicated. It not only depends on the cellulase saccharification, but also on the fermentation of ethanol by yeast. Some dissolved components during the pretreatment process may deposit on the surface of cellulose and affects the activity of yeast.
