Abstract:Head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) are the acoustic transfer functions from a sound source to two ears, reflecting acoustic scattering and diffraction caused by anatomical structures such as head, pinnae and torso. They encode various localization information and therefore are vital in the field of virtual auditory display. Although HRTFs of different individuals share some common features, they vary with individuals due to individualized difference in anatomical structures and dimensions, especially for pinnae. The present work analyzes the similarity on HRTF magnitudes between Chinese and Western subjects. Similarity on HRTFs magnitudes of different subject pairs is evaluated by calculating the mean normalized cross-correlation coefficient (MNCC) between their diffused-field equalized HRTF magnitudes, i.e., the directional transfer function magnitudes. The results indicate that the MNCC between Chinese-Western subject pairs is statistically less than that between Chinese-Chinese pairs or Western-Western subject pairs. Therefore, the statistical difference in similarity on HRTF magnitudes between Chinese and Western subjects exists. The nationality-related statistical difference in HRTFs calls for HRTF database of specific nationality or a standardized HRTF database including diversified nationalities as many as possible.
