Abstract:A cesium atomic magnetometer based on laser-pumped rf resonance has been investigated and demonstrated experimentally. Atoms are polarized and pumped to dark states by circularly polarized light. When there exists a magnetic field, the corresponding magnetization will be precessing around the magnetic field at Larmor frequency. By means of adding a resonant rf magnetic field, the atoms will be depolarized and absorb photons again. By detecting the spectrum of the transmitted light, one can obtain the information about the external magnetic field. We build an 894nm external cavity diode laser with a frequency stabilization device, and a low noise magnetic field measurement environment. After the optimization of the magnetometer parameter and closed-loop measurement, an ultimate sensitivity of 19 fT/Hz(1/2) and an intrinsic sensitivity of 1.8 pT/Hz(1/2) have been achieved with the spatial resolution smaller than 2 cm.

Abstract:In principle, laser-pumped Cs-He-4 magnetometers can take advantage of the high sensitivity of optically pumped magnetometers and the high accuracy of proton magnetometers. However, insufficient experimental studies have been conducted on the optimization conditions and physics of this type of magnetometer. In this study, we investigate the experimental performance of a laser-pumped Cs-He-4 magnetometer by optimizing the sensitivity of the excitation pulse settings. We report some dependence relationships that have not been previously reported. The optimal settings under the obtainable experimental conditions in our lab are 34 degree celsius for temperature, 10 mu s for pulse duration, and 67 V and 2.2 V for high- and low-level voltages, respectively, which provide a sensitivity of 26 pT/root Hz within a frequency of 0.08-0.2 Hz. This study provides a solid reference for further improving the Cs-He-4 magnetometer, offers the possibility of measuring physical constants more accurately, and provides a deeper understanding of plasma interaction processes.

Abstract:An atomic magnetometer based on optically detected magnetic resonance is investigated and demonstrated experimentally. We build an 894 nm external cavity diode laser which is frequency locked to the F = 4 -> F' = 3 transition of Cs D-1 line with DAVLL spectroscopy. With the phase-locked loop, the frequency of the rf coils is actively locked to the Larmor frequency and the magnetometer tracks the magnetic field variations in a phase coherent manner. An ultimate sensitivity of 19 fT/Hz(1/2) and an intrinsic sensitivity of 8.6 pT/Hz(1/2) in the magnetic environment which is close to geomagnetic field have been achieved with the spatial resolution smaller than 2 cm.

Abstract:We report a laser-pumped 4He atomic magnetometer with light shift suppression through the atomic sensor itself. A linearly polarized light is used to optically align the 4He metastable atoms and we monitor the magneto-optical double resonance (MODR) signals produced by the left- and right-circularly orthogonal components. It is shown that light shift leads to the atomic alignment to orientation conversion effect, and thus, the difference between the two MODR signals. One of these two MODR signals is locked at the Larmor frequency and is used to measure the ambient magnetic field, while the differential signal is, simultaneously, fed back to suppress the light shift. The scheme could be of the advantage to the design of compact magnetometers by reducing the systematic errors due to light shift.

Abstract:We propose a compact 4He magnetometer realizing magnetic field measurement and laser-frequency stabilization simultaneously in a single 4He atomic cell. The frequency stabilization scheme is based on the asymmetric line shape of magnetic resonance which is induced by spatially inhomogeneous light shifts. We investigate the asymmetric line shape of the magnetic resonance signal theoretically and experimentally in laser pumped 4He magnetometer with the magneto-optical double-resonance configuration. Notice that, due to the asymmetric line shape, the in-phase component of the magnetic resonance signal is shown to have a linear dependence with respect to the laser frequency detuning and is used to actively lock the laser frequency to the resonant point. The method reduces the complexity of the system and improves the stability of the magnetometer, making the laser-pumped 4He magnetometer more compact and portable.

Abstract:We describe a single beam compact Spin Exchange Relaxation Free(SERF) magnetometer whose configuration is compatible with the silicon-glass bonding micro-machining method. A cylindrical vapor cell with 3mm diameter and 3mm in length is utilized in the magnetometer. In order to reduce the wall relaxation which could not be neglected in micro-machined SERF magnetometer, 3 Amagats(1Amagat=2.69$\times$ 10$^{19}$/cm$^3$) neon buffer gas is filled in the vapor cell and this is the first demonstration of a Cs-Ne SERF magnetometer. We also did a simulation to show that neon is a better buffer gas than nitrogen and helium which is typical utilized in vapor cells. In order to reduce the laser amplitude noise and the large background detection offset which is reported to be the main noise source of a single beam absorption SERF magnetometer, we developed a laser power differential method and a factor of 2 improvement of the power noise suppression has been demonstrated. Finally, we did an optimization of the magnetometer and sensitivity of 40$fT/Hz^{1/2}$@30Hz has been achieved.

Abstract:Abstract The emergence of biomagnetism imaging has led to the development of ultrasensitive and compact spin-exchange relaxation-free (SERF) atomic magnetometers that promise high-resolution magnetocardiography (MCG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG). However, conventional optical components are not compatible with nanofabrication processes that enable the integration of atomic magnetometers on chips, especially for elliptically polarized laser-pumped SERF magnetometers with bulky optical systems. In this study, an elliptical-polarization pumping beam (at 795 nm) is achieved through a single-piece metasurface, which results in an SERF magnetometer with a high sensitivity reaching 10.61 fT/Hz 1/2 by utilizing a 87 Rb vapor cell with a 3 mm inner diameter. To achieve the optimum theoretical polarization, our design combines a computer-assisted optimization algorithm with an emerging metasurface design process. The metasurface is fabricated with 550 nm thick silicon-rich silicon nitride on a 2 × 2 cm 2 SiO 2 substrate and features a 22.17° ellipticity angle (a deviation from the target polarization of less than 2%) and more than 80% transmittance. This study provides a feasible approach for on-chip polarization control of future all-integrated atomic magnetometers, which will further pave the way for high-resolution biomagnetism imaging and portable atomic sensing applications.

Abstract:We report our recent progress in the experimental implementing of an all-optical 4 He atomic magnetometer being free from the dead-zone effect. A liquid crystal is adopted to constitute a polarization rotator. The light linear polarization vector can be adjusted and ultimately kept perpendicular with respect to the varying ambient magnetic field direction. We then make some further investigations to enhance the magnetometer sensitivity through reducing the laser intensity noise and optimizing parameters like the laser beam size, the input laser power and the modulation depth. The magnetometer demonstrates an improved magnetic field sensitivity of about 300 fT/Hz 1/2 for frequencies above 10 Hz.

Abstract:This article reports a distributed feedback (DFB) laser-pumped cesium atomic experimental magnetometer, showing how the sensitivity is influenced by the following 5 kinds of parameters: laser light intensity, laser frequency, radiofrequency intensity, temperature of cesium absorption cell, and the pressure of the buffer gas in the cell. Results of the experiments show that each of the five parameters has some influence on the sensitivity of the magnetometer, especially the laser frequency, radiofrequency intensity, and temperature of cesium absorption cell, which can even improve the sensitivity by 10 times. Recently we have obtained a sensitivity of 2.5 pT/Hz1/2.

Abstract:The highly sensitive SERF magnetometers hold exciting prospects for magnetocardiography and magnetoencephalography, and the accuracy of medical measurements depends largely on the performance of the magnetometers. A double-pass configuration is used to obtain uniform polarization and constructed by adding a mirror to retro-reflect the pump light. The transmission model of the reflected light which takes the effect of forward light into account is proposed, and the improved polarization is experimentally verified. The essential operation parameters of the magnetometer are optimized. The theoretical framework is established outlining the relationship between pump power, probe frequency, and signal response, and the optimal values for these parameters are experimentally determined. With the appropriate selection of probe power and operating temperature, the double-pass configuration achieves a sensitivity of 5.81 fT/Hz 1/2 , a bandwidth of 110 Hz, and represents a 17% improvement in stability compared to the single-pass configuration. The optimized magnetometer exhibits reduced susceptibility to laser conditions and enhanced stability, attributed to the reflection-assisted polarization improvement and better uniformity. This configuration efficiently utilizes the pumping laser, and its miniaturization offers significant benefits for magnetoencephalography and other biomagnetic measurements.

Abstract:Lamp-based optically pumped Cesium magnetometer is one kind of commercial quantum magnetometers. In whatever military or civil magnetic field measurement, the practical optically pump magnetometer possesses a very important application value as well as prospect. This paper presents a portable lamp-pumped and digital-locking cesium atomic magnetometer, including the probe for detecting Zeeman transition signal and the digital servo system for locking the Zeeman transition frequency based on NI PCI-4461. The probe is lamp-based and as compact as 17 cm × 6 cm × 6 cm in size. The design of the servo system is to use frequency switching (at two frequencies) to create two corresponding voltages from the probe. When the voltages are equal, the center of the two frequencies appears to be the Zeeman transition frequency. The measurement of the magnetic field is experimentally realized with the noise level of 22 pT. The magnetometer is portable and highly compact with good sensitivity and has the potential of practical usage in the future.

Abstract:We present both a theoretical and experimental study of the magneto-optical spectra induced with intensity-modulated resonant laser light that synchronously pumps and detects the metastable $^{4}\mathrm{He}$ atoms in the presence of a quasistatic magnetic field. We extend previous work and derive complete analytical expressions for the resonance signals by taking into account arbitrary magnetic-field directions and arbitrary light polarizations. The analytical results are derived by solving the Liouville equation using the irreducible tensor formalism on the assumption of low light power. We discuss the potential application of the derived analytical results in constructing and optimizing a dead-zone-free all-optical atomic magnetometer.

Abstract:In this article, a high-sensitivity magnetometer with paraffin-coated Cs vapor cell based on amplitude modulated nonlinear magneto-optical rotation (AM NMOR) is presented. The magnetometer has a wide dynamic range which covers the geomagnetic field range and its operation is demonstrated in an unshielded environment. The sensitivity of the magnetometer has reached sub-pT level. The main limitation to the resonance linewidth and the sensitivity is nonlinear Zeeman splitting.

Abstract:Parametric-resonance magnetometer is a high-sensitivity quantum sensor characterized by applying the non-resonant radio-frequency (RF) fields to the atomic ensemble. The RF fields lead to crosstalk in the multi-sensor design, thus disturbing the magnetic-field measurement results. We propose an optically modulated alignment-based 4He parametric-resonance magnetometer. By using the fictitious field generated by the modulated light shift, parametric resonance is realized, and crosstalk caused by the magnetic RF field is prevented. The relative intensity noise of the lasers is suppressed to optimize the sensitivity of the magnetometer. Our magnetometer experimentally demonstrates a magnetic-field noise floor of 130 fT/Hz1/2 in both open- and closed-loop operations and has the potential to reach 70 fT/Hz1/2 when compared with the optimized magnetic RF scheme. It provides near-zero magnetic-field measurements with a 2 kHz bandwidth at room temperature, which is useful for high-bandwidth measurements in biomagnetic applications.

Abstract:We designed laser-pumped cesium vapor magnetometers in the M x configuration for the control and stabilization of magnetic field fluctuations and gradients in a new experiment searching for a permanent electric dipole moment of the neutron. The intrinsic sensitivity of the device was determined to be 30 fT in a measurement bandwidth of 1 Hz, limited by laser noise. In the shot noise limit the magnetometer can reach a sensitivity of 7 fT for 1 s integration time. Test measurements of the stability of a 2 µT magnetic field in a threefold magnetic shield have revealed fluctuations on the order of 200 fT to 300 fT with integration times in the range of 2 s to 100 s. Those fluctuations were traced back to the stability of the power supply used to generate the magnetic field. The laser-pumped magnetometer fulfills the requirements set by the planned neutron electric dipole moment experiment.
Optimized detection modality for double resonance alignment based optical magnetometer

Abstract:In this work, we present a comprehensive and comparative analysis of two detection modalities, i.e., polarization rotation and absorption measurement of light, for a double resonance alignment based optical magnetometer (DRAM). We derive algebraic expressions for magnetometry signals based on multipole moments description. Experiments are carried out using a room-temperature paraffin-coated Caesium vapour cell and measuring either the polarization rotation or absorption of the transmitted laser light. A detailed experimental analysis of the resonance spectra is performed to validate the theoretical findings for various input parameters. The results signify the use of a single isotropic relaxation rate thus simplifying the data analysis for optimization of the DRAM. The sensitivity measurements are performed and reveal that the polarization rotation detection mode yields larger signals and better sensitivity than absorption measurement of light.

Multi-Parameter Optimization of Rubidium Laser Optically Pumped Magnetometers with Geomagnetic Field Intensity

Abstract:Rubidium laser optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) are widely used magnetic sensors based on the Zeeman effect, laser pumping, and magnetic resonance principles. They measure the magnetic field by measuring the magnetic resonance signal passing through a rubidium atomic gas cell. The quality of the magnetic resonance signal is a necessary condition for a magnetometer to achieve high sensitivity. In this research, to obtain the best magnetic resonance signal of rubidium laser OPMs in the Earth's magnetic field intensity, the experiment system of rubidium laser OPMs is built with a rubidium atomic gas cell as the core component. The linewidth and amplitude ratio (LAR) of magnetic resonance signals is utilized as the optimization objective function. The magnetic resonance signals of the magnetometer experiment system are experimentally measured for different laser frequencies, radio frequency (RF) intensities, laser powers, and atomic gas cell temperatures in a background magnetic field of 50,765 nT. The experimental results indicate that optimizing these parameters can reduce the LAR by one order of magnitude. This shows that the optimal parameter combination can effectively improve the sensitivity of the magnetometer. The sensitivity defined using the noise spectral density measured under optimal experimental parameters is 1.5 pT/Hz1/2@1 Hz. This work will provide key technical support for rubidium laser OPMs' product development.
Femtotesla 4he Magnetometer with a Multipass Cell

Abstract:In this Letter, we propose a single-beam nonlinear magneto -optical rotation (NMOR) magnetometer with a multipass 4He gas-discharged cell. In contrast to the single-pass cell, the multipass cell allowed laser beams to pass through the metastable-state atomic ensemble 22 times, which directly increases the optical path length and significantly enhances magneto-optical rotation in the 4He gas sample. Based on nonlinear Faraday rotation, the 4He magnetometer with the multipass cell demonstrates a noise floor of 9 fT/Hz1/2, which approaches the photon-shot noise floor limit of 6.4 fT/Hz1/2. In addition, the wider linewidth in metastable-state atoms realizes an NMOR 4He magnetometer with a 3 dB band-width of 4.3 kHz, in contrast to the ultranarrow linewidth in the antirelaxation-coated cells or spin-exchange relaxation -free regime alkali-metal cells with buffer gas. Since the 4He cell functions without heating or cryogenic cooling, the femtotesla sensitivity and kilohertz-bandwidth 4He magne-tometer exhibits potential in biomagnetic applications such as magnetocardiography and magnetoencephalography.
