Abstract:An energy-efficient scheme based on the interconnection of optical network unit (ONU) is introduced, which can significantly reduce the energy consumption of the low-traffic operation. The energy consumption model for the ONU-interconnected optical access network (OAN) based on the electronic switch (ES) technology is established, and the energy efficiency of the proposed scheme is analyzed and compared with that of the OAN using optical switch (OS). The simulation results demonstrate that the ONU-interconnected scheme can efficiently reduce the energy consumption of OAN, and it shows a good energy consumption performance under daily traffic model.

Abstract:We propose an efficient energy-saving scheme by dividing the optical network units (ONUs) into groups composed of one master-ONU (M-ONU) and several slave-ONUs (S-ONUs). The S-ONUs are primarily selected to communicate with the M-ONU and, second, with the remote node (RN), which can reduce the usage of high-power ports at the RN and subsequently decrease energy consumption. It is demonstrated that obvious energy-saving effects can be achieved, and moreover, the energy-saving efficiency can be further improved by expanding the capacity of the links between RN and M-ONUs and properly selecting the scale of the ONU group.

Abstract:The key current challenges for the industrial application of all optical switching networks are energy consumption, transmission rate, spectrum efficiency, and switching throughput. The energy consumption problem is mainly researched in this paper. From the perspective of components and modules, node equipment, and network levels, different enabling technologies are proposed to overcome this problem, which are also evaluated through different experimental demonstrations. First, high-sampling-rate digital-to-analog converters (DACs) and WSS-based ROADM modules are demonstrated as components and modules for energy-efficient all optical switching networks. Then, an all optical transport network test-bed consisting of 10 Pbit/s level all optical switching nodes based on multi-level and multi-planar switching architecture is experimentally demonstrated for the first time, which can reduce power consumption by 43%. A control architecture for energy-efficient all optical switching networks is built with OpenFlow based software defined networking (SDN), and experimental results are given to verify the performance of this control architecture. Finally, we describe an All Optical Networks Innovation (AONI) project in China, which aims to explore transmission, switching, and networking technologies in all optical switching networks, and then two application scenarios are forecast based on the technical breakthroughs of this project.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a scheme to improve the energy efficiency of wavelength division multiplexing - orthogonal frequency division multiplexing - passive optical networks (WDM-OFDM-PONs). By using an N × M opto-mechanic switch in optical line terminal (OLT), an OFDM modulation module is shared by several channels to deliver data to multiple users with low traffic demands during non-peak hours of the day, thus greatly reducing the number of operating devices and minimizing the energy consumption of the OLT. An experiment utilizing one OFDM modulation module to serve three optical network units (ONUs) in a WDM-OFDM-PON is performed to verify the feasibility of our proposal. Theoretical analysis and numerical calculation show that the proposed scheme can achieve a saving of 23.6% in the energy consumption of the OFDM modulation modules compared to conventional WDM-OFDM-PON.

Abstract:An energy-efficient optical access network scheme based on sub-band grouping and allocating is proposed and studied for the digital filter multiple access adopted passive optical network (DFMA-PON). In this scheme, sub-bands generated in digital sdomain are grouped as band groups and properly allocated for optical network unit (ONU) transmissions to reduce the transmission time. Based on this, longer sleeping time can be provided to each ONU, and some more energy can be saved. Numerical evaluations indicate that comparing with basic DFMA-PON, significant energy is saved by the proposed scheme, and a promoted energy saving performance can be achieved by properly arranging the number of sub-bands assigned in a band group. Furthermore, the technology improvement and its impact on the performance of the scheme are also investigated. It is demonstrated that comparing with the conventional network, the proposed scheme possesses prominent energy saving potential. It can be considered as a potential solution for future energy-efficient optical access network.

Abstract:An energy-efficient and survivable optical access network structure is proposed and investigated. Based on a structure model ofmultilayer-ring, the access network is divided into four layers and modules on a same layer are interconnected as a ring. Therefore, multiple paths are available for optical network units to access an optical line terminal, which not only provides convenience in traffic aggregation, but also guarantees the survivability of network. With this structure, quantities of standby modules are reduced to decrease both capital cost and power cost. Large part of power can also be saved by turning OFF idle modules through traffic aggregation. Moreover, by controlling the optical switches deployed in remote node, elastic reach access is realized as well since amplification is optional on transmission links. Theoretical and numerical analyses indicate that the scheme shows great advantages on power saving, network survivability, as well as the system flexibility, and its energy efficiency performance can be further improved by operating in conjunction with energy-efficient resource scheduling scheme. It provides a potential structure for next generation optical access network.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a scheme to reduce the energy consumption of optical line terminal (OLT) in wavelength division multiplexing - orthogonal frequency division multiplexing passive optical networks (WDM-OFDM-PONs). In our scheme, a wireless communication technique, termed layered modulation, is introduced to maximize the transmission capacity of OFDM modulation module in the OLT by multiplexing data from different ONU groups with signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) margins onto the same subcarriers. With adaptive and dynamic subcarrier and layer allocation, several ONU groups with low traffic demands can share one OFDM modulation module to deliver their data during non-peak hours of a day, thus greatly reducing the number of running devices and minimizing the energy consumption of the OLT. Numerical calculation shows that an energy efficiency improvement of 28.3% in the OLT can be achieved by using proposed scheme compared to the conventional WDM-OFDM-PON. Abstract:Environmental concerns have motivated network designers to further reduce energy consumption of access networks. This paper focuses on reducing energy consumption of Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) as one of the most efficient transmission technologies for broadband access. In EPON, the downstream traffic is sent from the optical line terminal (OLT) located at the central office to all optical network units (ONUs). Each ONU checks all arrival downstream packets and selects the downstream packets destined to itself. Therefore, receivers at ONUs have to always stay awake, thus consuming a large amount of energy. Contrariwise, an ONU transmitter can be triggered by the arrival of the upstream traffic and so it can go to the low power mode when no traffic is observed. Putting ONUs into the low power mode during light traffic is a known strategy for energy saving. In this article, we address the downstream challenge and also improve the ONU transmitter sleep time by proposing a simple sleep control scheme. We also propose an upstream and a downstream sleep-aware traffic scheduling scheme to avoid missing the packets during the sleep states. The proposed sleep control scheme does not need the handshake process and is based on the mutual inference at OLT and ONU. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can save energy as much as 60% when the network traffic is light.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a new scheme to reduce the energy consumption of optical network units (ONUs) in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing passive optical networks (OFDM PONs) by using time-domain interleaved OFDM (TI-OFDM) technique. In a conventional OFDM PON, each ONU has to process the complete downstream broadcast OFDM signal with a high sampling rate and a large FFT size to retrieve its required data, even if it employs a portion of OFDM subcarriers. However, in our scheme, the ONU only needs to sample and process one data group from the downlink TI-OFDM signal, effectively reducing the sampling rate and the FFT size of the ONU. Thus, the energy efficiency of ONUs in OFDM PONs can be greatly improved. A proof-of-concept experiment is conducted to verify the feasibility of the proposed scheme. Compared to the conventional OFDM PON, our proposal can save 17.1% and 26.7% energy consumption of ONUs by halving and quartering the sampling rate and the FFT size of ONUs with the use of the TI-OFDM technology. Abstract:Rapidly increased bandwidth of vehicle communication brings challenges on its infrastructure, especially for V2R/V2I scenarios. On the other hand, the costs and energy consumption asks for the network convergence among fixed access, roadside assistant vehicle network and even mobile networks. Therefore, flow interaction in the converged network threatens the reliability and safety of vehicle services. This paper proposes a flexible vehicle and fixed access converged network architecture and elastic slice-enabling scheme, to provide reliable vehicle communication service from the infrastructure level. In this architecture, optical network units (ONUs) are capable to be migrated flexibly between different optical line terminals (OLTs) to improve the bandwidth utilization of idle OLTs. Meanwhile, while taking into account the impact on network quality—ONU switching times and transmission distance, a flexible ONU migration algorithm (OMA) is proposed to maximize bandwidth resource utilization. The cross-region demonstration proves the feasibility of the proposed slicing mechanism, and the simulation results indicates that the bandwidth utilization ratio increases by 15% in the simulations circumstances.

Abstract:Elastic optical network (EON) has been proposed recently as a spectrum-efficient optical layer to adapt to rapidly-increasing traffic demands instead of current deployed wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) optical network. In contrast with conventional WDM optical cross-connect (OXCs) based on wavelength selective switches (WSSs), the EON OXCs are based on spectrum selective switches (SSSs) which are much more expensive than WSSs, especially for large-scale switching architectures. So the transition cost from WDM OXCs to EON OXCs is a major obstacle to realizing EON. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a transition OXC (TOXC) structure based on 2-stage cascading switching architectures, which make full use of available WSSs in current deployed WDM OXCs to reduce number and port count of required SSSs. Moreover, we propose a contention-aware spectrum allocation (CASA) scheme for EON built with the proposed TOXCs. We show by simulation that the TOXCs reduce the network capital expenditure transiting from WDM optical network to EON about 50%, with a minor traffic blocking performance degradation and about 10% accommodated traffic number detriment compared with all-SSS EON OXC architectures.

Abstract:In the electrical/optical hybrid data center networks, the switching fabric is consuming a significant amount of energy. Regarding the fact that the data center traffic is time-varying, this paper studies the energy-efficient scaling approaches to manage the ON/OFF state of optical circuit switches and electrical packet switches to save energy while ensuring service quality. Simulation results show that the energy consumption of the hybrid data centers is saved, and the performance of the data centers is not degraded significantly.

Abstract:Putting no-load Optical Network Units (ONUs) into sleep mode has been recognized as a promising solution to achieve high energy efficiency for Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPONs). To minimize ONU active time, the upstream and downstream transmission windows of each ONU should be overlapped as much as possible. However, the existing Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation (DBA) schemes for EPONs only consider the upstream bandwidth requests. In this paper, we design a novel energy-efficient DBA framework to reduce energy consumption, and meanwhile to guarantee network performance based on bandwidth requests in both downstream and upstream directions. Our DBA framework includes an energy-efficient MAC control scheme, a grant sizing policy and two grant scheduling algorithms. With the MAC control scheme, the Optical Line Terminal (OLT) allocates transmission windows to all ONUs and puts them into low power mode (sleep or doze mode) in each polling cycle. We formulate the energy efficient grant scheduling problem and introduce two energy-efficient grant scheduling algorithms to solve this problem. Results show the effectiveness of the proposed framework and highlight the merits of our algorithms.

Abstract:The increasing number of cores in future chip multiprocessors places a heightened emphasis on the energy-efficiency of the on-chip communications infrastructure. Traditional packet-switched electronic network-on-chip (NoC) has low energy-efficiency in transmitting long-distance packets. By providing high-bandwidth, low-latency chip-wide communication, optical interconnects can be a promising candidate for future NoC architectures. However, laser source and optical-electronic modems in optical network-on-chip (ONoC) introduce considerably high static energy, which is mostly wasted if the traffic load is low. In this paper, we propose a novel energy-efficient Hybrid Optical-Electronic NoC named HEON, which consists of an electronic buffer-bypassed mesh subnetwork and some bus-based optical channels. The optical channels, which dispose long-distance traffic to improve performance, are managed through a novel priority token scheme, in which the optical components can be dynamically turned on and off to save energy according to the traffic load. Experiment results show that HEON can improve energy-efficiency by 47.4 % and 38.1 %, compared with the electronic NoC and a state-of-art bus-based ONoC respectively.
Downstream-based Scheduling for Energy Conservation in Green EPONs

Abstract:Maximizing the optical network unit's (ONU) sleep time is an effective approach for achieving maxi- mum energy conservation in green Ethernet passive optical networks (EPONs). While overlapping downstream and upstream ONU transmissions can maximize the ONU sleep time, it jeopardizes the quality of service (QoS) performance of the network, especially for downstream traffic in case the overlapping is based on the upstream time slot. In this paper, we study the downstream traffic performance in green EPONs under the limited service discipline and the upstream-based overlapped time window. Specifically, we first derive the expected mean packet delay, and then present a closed-form expression of the ONU sleep time, setting identical upstream/downstream transmission cycle times based on a maximum downstream traffic delay re- quirement. With the proposed system model, we present a novel downstream bandwidth allocation scheme for energy conservation in green EPONs. Simulation results verify the proposed model and highlight the advantages of our scheme over conventional approaches.
Hybrid Packet/Fine-Grained-Optical Switching Architectures for Future Large-Scale Data Center Networks

Abstract:The rise of big data and cloud computing applications is driving an explosion in the growth of data centers (DCs), and is already resulting in networking bottlenecks and performance degradation. The size and capacity of DCs are being constrained by the traditional packet-based switching architectures due to high energy consumption.Introducing optical circuit switching (OCS) into the packet-based switching architectures becomes a promising solution to reduce energy consumption in future large-scale high-capacity DC networks. Current fiber/wavelength-switching-based OCS, however, requires each lightpath to occupy the full bandwidth of a fiber/wavelength, leading to coarse switching granularity, low bandwidth utilization, and weak scalability. In order to raise bandwidth utilization in high-capacity DC networks, we proposed and realized a novel hybrid packet/fine-grained optical switching architecture in a prototype DC test bed. In this architecture, optical time slice switching (OTSS) is used for sub-wavelength optical switching in the temporal domain. With high-precision time synchronization and accurate control of optical switches, ultra-fine switching granularity and much higher bandwidth utilization can be achieved. Similar to the spectrum fragments in spectrum-sliced elastic optical switching networks, time slot fragments exist in OTSS networks, which hinder the improvement of bandwidth utilization. In this work, we propose a new overlay hybrid packet/OTSS DC network architecture to get full utilization of time slot fragments. Compared with the peer-to-peer hybrid packet/OTSS architecture, the overlay architecture achieves better bandwidth utilization.

Abstract:A detailed examination of evolving traffic characteristics, operator requirements, and network technology trends suggests a move away from nonblocking interconnects in data center networks (DCNs). As a result, recent efforts have advocated oversubscribed networks with the capability to adapt to traffic requirements on-demand. In this paper, we present the design, implementation, and evaluation of OSA, a novel Optical Switching Architecture for DCNs. Leveraging runtime reconfigurable optical devices, OSA dynamically changes its topology and link capacities, thereby achieving unprecedented flexibility to adapt to dynamic traffic patterns. Extensive analytical simulations using both real and synthetic traffic patterns demonstrate that OSA can deliver high bisection bandwidth (60%-100% of the nonblocking architecture). Implementation and evaluation of a small-scale functional prototype further demonstrate the feasibility of OSA.
