Abstract:This paper analyzes the features and feasibility of the uplink utilizing wireless radio frequency, visible light, and 780-950 nm infrared light for visible-light communication. In addition, a novel uplink scheme employing 1550 nm laser and avalanche photo diode is presented. This scheme maintains the advantages of high-speed, no electromagnetic interference, and enhanced security. The simulation results indicate that this uplink can achieve a data rate of 1 Gb/s.

Abstract:Visible light communication(VLC) has shown in explosive growth recent years, and LEDs based visible light wireless communication has the potential to change lives in the future with applications such as LiFi, smart lighting and indoor positioning. Due to the low bandwidth of LED devices, the VLC systems using LDs(laser diodes) as light sources can achieve faster transmission speed. In this paper, we propose a high-speed visible light communication system with automatic alignment function using red laser. Each tranceiver in the system can be moved in the angle of view of another, and be aligned in real time using cameras, computers and two-dimensional turntable. TCP data transmission rate more than 700 Mbps with a distance of 6 m free-space link, <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\pm 10^{\circ}\text{angle}$</tex> of view was achieved.

Abstract:The advancement demands of high-speed wireless data link ask for higher requirements on visible light communication (VLC), where wide coverage stands as a critical criterion. Here, we present the design and implementation of a transmitter structure capable of emitting a high -power wide -coverage white light laser. This laser source exhibits excellent stability, with an irradiation range extending to a half -angle of 20 degrees. Its high brightness satisfies the needs of indoor illumination while maintaining excellent communication performance. Utilizing bit -loading discrete multi -tone modulation, a peak data transmission rate of 3.24 Gbps has been achieved, spanning 1 to 5 m. Remarkably, the data rates exceed 2.5 Gbps within a 40 degrees range at a distance of 5 m, enabling a long-distance, wide coverage, high-speed VLC link for future mobile network applications. Abstract:Laser-based visible light communication (VLC) system has been confirmed as a vital part of current VLC technology due to its high data rate and extended range. However, the application of the conventional laser VLC system is very much limited by its high directivity and thus requests a complex tracking mechanism. In this work, we present a laser-based white light VLC system with ultra-wide field-of-view (FOV) exceeding 150°, which paves the path for future deployment of laser-based VLC systems. This system consists of two blue laser diodes pumping YAG ceramic phosphor plate in a reflection configuration as the transmitter and a silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) as the receiver. An engineered diffuser is integrated into the transmitter end. The system modulation bandwidth is measured to be 200 MHz, which is limited by the frequency response of the SiPM. When the forward error correction (FEC) threshold bit error rate (BER) of 3.8 × 10-3 is considered, data rates up to ~400 Mbps have been achieved within 88° using the adaptive bit loading discrete multi-tone (DMT) modulation scheme. When extending the FOV to 152°, the transmission data rate remains exceeding 200 Mbps. Our work confirms the possibility of constructing the wide-angle and ultra-high-speed laser-based MIMO VLC system.

Abstract:In recent years, visible light communication using LEDs has attracted great attention. However, LED's narrow modulation bandwidth restricts the achievable data rate. In that case, researches on LD-based VLC are widely proceeding. Because of the high beam convergence of LDs, the terminal devices must be strictly aligned. In this paper, we propose an automatic alignment VLC system based on red LDs. By using the camera and the galvo, we demonstrate a mobile real-time VLC system over a distance of 0.6 meter and a field angle of ±10°. Based on the Gigabit Ethernet protocol, the system can provide a TCP data transmission of 909Mbps.

Abstract:In recent years, high-speed visible light communications (VLC) have been identified as an essential part of communication technologies for next generation wireless network owing to the increasing demand for faster data transmission speeds. VLC offers the unique advantages of ultra-high data rate, unregulated and secure channels, free of EM interference. Compared with the LED-based VLC system, laser-based photonic systems are promising for compact, droop-free, and high-speed white lighting and VLC applications, making them ideal alternatives for building ultra-fast optical wireless data link. Besides the potential for achieving high data rate free-space communication links, i.e., the Li-Fi network, laser based VLC, or visible laser light communication (VLLC) technology can also enable underwater wireless optical communications (UWOC) for many important applications. This paper summarizes the recent progress in high-speed laser based VLC devices and explore VLLC-enabled networks, systems, and applications. I will describe state-of-the-art VLC transmitter and receiver technologies. Novel designs to overcome the inherent limitations will be covered. Finally, the innovations in VLC systems for industrial IoT, vehicular communication, and underwater wireless networks applications will be discussed.

Abstract:Visible light communication in conjunction with solid state lighting has become an emerging area of interest to achieve lighting and wireless communication simultaneously in an indoor environment. It is anticipated to be a low cost supplement to existing wireless communication technologies. Most existing work has primarily focused on a unidirectional downlink using visible light spectra. The appropriate choice of an uplink to achieve bidirectional communication is a big challenge. In this paper, candidate options of the uplink are compared in terms of device performance, light safety, background interference, and path loss. In visible light communication, white light emitting diodes as optical transmitters are also characterized in terms of impulse response and electrical spectrum. A digital preequalization idea to increase their bandwidth is proposed. Performance of the downlink visible light communication system is also experimentally studied in order to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed design.

Abstract:We are seeing a growing use of light emitting diodes (LEDs) in a range of applications including lighting, TV and backlight board screen, display etc. In comparison with the traditional incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs, LEDs offer long life-space, much higher energy efficiency, high performance cost ratio and above all very fast switching capability. LED based Visible Light Communications (VLC) is an emerging field of optical communications that focuses on the part of the electromagnetic spectrum that humans can see. Depending on the transmission distance, we can divide the whole optical network into two categories, long haul and short haul. Visible light communication can be a promising candidate for short haul applications. In this paper, we outline the configuration of VLC, its unique benefits, and describe the state of the art research contributions consisting of advanced modulation formats including adaptive bit loading OFDM, carrierless amplitude and phase (CAP), pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) and single carrier Nyquist, linear equalization and nonlinear distortion mitigation based on machine learning, quasi-balanced coding and phase-shifted Manchester coding. These enabling technologies can support VLC up to 10Gb/s class free space transmission.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC), combining wireless communication with white lighting, has many advantages. It is free of electromagnetic interference, is rich in spectrum resources, and has a gigabit-per-second (Gbps) data rate. Laser diodes (LDs) are emerging as promising light sources for high-speed VLC communication due to their high modulation bandwidth. In this paper, we demonstrate a red/green/blue (R/G/B) LDs based VLC system with a recorded data rate of 46.41 Gbps, employing discrete multitone (DMT) and adaptive bit-loading technology to achieve high spectral efficiency (SE). The emission characteristics and transmission performance of R/G/B-LDs are discussed. The optimal data rates of R/G/B-LDs channels are 17.168/14.652/14.590 Gbps, respectively. The bit-error-ratio (BER) of each channel satisfies the 7% forward-error-correction (FEC) threshold (3.8×10-3) and greatly approaches the channel Shannon limit.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) has been considered as a promising technique for broadband wireless access. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel high-speed LED based VLC local area network to provide beyond 10Gb/s optical wireless access for massive users based on star topology architecture. Fiber link is used as the bidirectional transmission backbone of the VLC network and directly connected to the LED lamps. Frequency division multiplexing (FDM) is used for the downlink, while for the uplink, we respectively utilize FDM and time division multiplexing (TDM) as the uplink access schemes. A full-duplex VLC network for 4 users has been successfully demonstrated with the overall throughput of 4Gb/s. The measured bit error rates (BERs) of downlink and uplink for all the users are under 7% pre-forward error correction (FEC) limit of 3.8×10-3 over 25km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) and 65cm free space, clearly validating the promising potential of the proposed VLC network architecture for future 40Gb/s and 100Gb/s wireless access.

Abstract:Visible light communication(VLC)has gradually become a research hotspot in satellite communication owing to its significant advantages.For example,VLC provides rich and unlicensed spectrum resources,high transmission rates,strong security,and resistance to electromagnetic interference.Laser VLC devices exhibit high emission power,strong resistance to radiation,and a narrow laser beam divergence angle and are expected to be used in high-capacity long-distance satellite communication link transmissions.In this study,we implement an integrated 40-channel wavelength division multiplexing(WDM)laser VLC system,utilizing 29 visible light wavelengths.The system employs discrete multi-tone(DMT)bit loading modulation and the Levin-Campello(LC)algorithm,achieving a total transmission data rate of 418.3 Gbit/s.To the best of our knowledge,this represents the highest data rate achieved in laser VLC using WDM to date.To address the issues of bandwidth limitation and high-frequency fading in laser VLC systems,this system employs digital pre-equalization technology.Based on the signal characteristics of the system,a corresponding Zobel network is designed to enhance and reduce the energy of high-frequency and low-frequency signals,respectively,thereby improving the overall communication performance.The experimental results reveal that digital pre-equalization significantly enhances the laser VLC performance.This system demonstrates the significant potential of laser VLC in high-capacity satellite communication.

Abstract:We demonstrate a fully packaged 10-λ WDM integrated module based on visible light laser diodes. A data-rate of 110.79Gbps can be achieved in 17.5cm free-space and 1.5m fiber link. The experimental results show the potential applications in high-speed indoor access networks and data center interconnect.

Abstract:The escalating demand for greater transmission capacities in the forthcoming 6 G communication landscapes necessitates the investigation of upper segments of the electromagnetic spectrum by both academic institutions and the industrial sector. This effort aims to circumvent the impending spectrum resource limitations. Against this backdrop, laser diodes (LDs) emerge as a critical technology for high-speed visible light communication (VLC), owing to their significant modulation bandwidth potential. This paper details what we believe to be a novel visible light laser communication (VLLC) system powered by red/green/blue (RGB) tricolor laser diodes. It highlights a successful 100-meter free-space transmission achieved through a time domain hybrid huffman coding (TDHHC) technique. The system's performance review unveiled impressive data transmission rates for the red, green, and blue laser diodes channels at 16.852 Gbps, 14.442 Gbps, and 15.755 Gbps, respectively, culminating in a cumulative transmission rate of 47.049 Gbps while maintaining a bit error rate (BER) beneath the stringent threshold of 3.8E-3, mandated by 7% hard decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) standards. As far as we known, this marks the highest data rate documented in a long-distance tricolor VLLC system.

Abstract:Mobile visible light communication (VLC) is key for integrating lighting and communication applications in the 6G era, yet there exists a notable gap in experimental research on mobile VLC. In this study, we introduce a mobile VLC system and investigate the impact of mobility speed on communication performance. Leveraging a laser-based light transmitter with a wide coverage, we enable a light fidelity (LiFi) system with a mobile receiving end. The system is capable of supporting distances from 1 m to 4 m without a lens and could maintain a transmission rate of 500 Mbps. The transmission is stable at distances of 1 m and 2 m, but an increase in distance and speed introduces interference to the system, leading to a rise in the Bit Error Rate (BER). The mobile VLC experimental system provides a viable solution to the issue of mobile access in the integration of lighting and communication applications, establishing a solid practical foundation for future research.

Abstract:Optical wireless communication (OWC) using line-of-sight connections has great application potential for indoor scenes due to its advantages of high data transmission speed and privacy. In our proposed system, we use infrared tunable vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) as light source, array waveguide gratings (AWG) combined with 6 × 6 integrated optical fiber arrays as a router to realize ultrafast beam-steering and high capacity point-to-point data transmission, which makes the indoor OWC system compact, low-cost, and easy to install. The high tuning rate of VCSEL enables the channel switching to be completed within 1.7 µs. Based on the modulation format of non-return-to-zero on-off keying (NRZ-OOK), a data rate of 12 Gbit/s per channel can be realized with high sensitivity through 3.1 m free space when the detected optical power is low. The system is proved to be a flexible link with high-speed communication for mobile terminals in a limited space.

Abstract:We built a full-duplex high-speed optical wireless communication (OWC) system based on high-bandwidth micro-size devices, for which micro-LED and VCSEL arrays are implemented to establish downlink and uplink, respectively. The high-capacity downlink based on a single-pixel quantum dot (QD) micro-LED can reach a data rate of 2.74 Gbps with adaptive orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). VCSEL-based line-of-sight (LOS) and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) uplinks are designed with lens-free receiving functions for a 2.2-m communication distance. Experimental results have been demonstrated and confirmed that both downlink and uplinks are capable of providing sufficient bandwidth for a multi-gigabit OWC. Besides, the lens-free uplink receiver can alleviate requirements for aligning and improve the mobility of the transmitter. The VCSELs implemented for both systems work with low driving currents of 140-mA and 190-mA under consideration of the human eye safety. For non-return-to-zero on-off keying (NRZ-OOK), both uplinks can achieve 2.125 Gbps with bit-error-rate (BER) lower than the forward error correction (FEC) threshold of 3.8×10-3 for Ethernet access.
