Abstract:Optical network-on-chip( ONoC) has many characteristics superior to electrical interconnection and has emerged as a promising alternative. To improve the performance of optical on-chip networks,a novelring-based 4 × 4nonblocking silicon optical router was proposed by means of optical module method. This structure just composes evenmicroring-resonator-based switching elements and six waveguide crossings,which reduce power consumption,device area and insertion loss. Finally,the topology performance were evalutated in terms of insertion loss and power consumption.The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed architecture consumes 8% less power and 7% less optical insertion loss.

Abstract:To provide determined network services, including high bandwidth, low data loss, low latency, and low jitter services, to transmission and computing resource integration networks, a novel routing optimization method is proposed. Based on physical-layer collision awareness and transparent packet duplication, delay and deletion, high-reliability and low-latency all-optical communication can be achieved. In addition, this method has the potential to be adapted to rapidly time-varying topologies and link lengths in wireless optical networks. In this paper, the processing and distribution of data packets in this routing optimization method are described; a structure of the all-optical switching node for supporting this routing optimization method is presented; and the influence of switching node performance, such as the maximum cache time, the maximum multicast packet number and the perception latency, on end-to-end availability are analyzed by simulation.

Abstract:The photoelectric hybrid network has been proposed to achieve the ultrahigh bandwidth, lower delay, and less power consumption for chip multiprocessor (CMP) systems. However, a large number of optical elements used in optical networks-on-chip (ONoCs) generate high transmission loss which will influence network performance severely and increase power consumption. In this paper, the Dijkstra algorithm is adopted to realize adaptive routing with minimum transmission loss of link and reduce the output power of the link transmitter in mesh-based ONoCs. The numerical simulation results demonstrate that the transmission loss of a link in optimized power control based on the Dijkstra algorithm could be maximally reduced compared with traditional power control based on the dimensional routing algorithm. Additionally, it has a greater advantage in saving the average output power of optical transmitter compared to the adaptive power control in previous studies, while the network size expands. With the aid of simulation software OPNET, the network performance simulations in an optimized network revealed that the end-to-end (ETE) latency and throughput are not vastly reduced in regard to a traditional network. Hence, the optimized power control proposed in this paper can greatly reduce the power consumption of s network without having a big impact on network performance.

Performance Optimization of Intelligent Optical Networks by Multiple Alternate Routes Based on the K-shortest Path Algorithm

Abstract:Blocking probability is one of the key factors to evaluate the routing and wavelength algorithms for intelligent optical network. Two kinds of Dynamic K-Shortest Path (DKSP) Algorithms were designed. One is based on Linear Link Weight Function (LW) and the other is based on Piecewise Linear Link Weight Function (PLW). It was found that the two kinds of DKSP can significantly decrease the blocking probability of optical network comparing to the static KSP for the same number of alternate routes. Compared to routing with LW, the coefficient of PLW has larger effect on the blocking probability of optical network when the number of alternate route is small, but the effect is weakened with the increase of the number of alternate route. As far as the two kinds of DKSP algorithms are concerned, DKSP with PLW has some advantage over DKSP with LW on decreasing the blocking probability. It was also found that the optimized performance can almost be got by DKSP with only 2-4 alternate routes for NSFNET.

Abstract:In terms of the growth rate, network capacity is slower than network traffic. To solve the mismatch between them, utilization of available capacity can be maximized to provide “best-fit” service for emerging applications (e.g., eBanking, Peer-to-Peer (P2P) file exchanges, etc.). To satisfy such a requirement, we propose a three-dimensional label scheduling algorithm (TD-LSA), which is a distributed scheduling approach powered by central databases. In the proposal, all connections are provisioned in three dimensions (i.e., space, time and wavelength) in a distributed way and uniquely identified by three-dimensional labels. And in this way a three-dimensional connection is more robust than a single-dimensional connection because the three-dimensional approach can avoid potential scheduling conflicts as much as possible by using central databases in a network. Thus, the central databases can reduce bandwidth consumption and offer “best-fit” service for three-dimensional connections. Furthermore, in order to further reduce bandwidth consumption and to match with a priority of traffic, K-least hop first path (K-LHPF) and a rescheduling mechanism are applied to our proposal. Simulation experiments demonstrate that our proposal achieves the expected performance gain against existing alternates.

Abstract:Optical networks-on-chips (ONoCs) is an effective and extensible on-chip communication technology, which has the characteristics of high bandwidth, low consumption, and low delay. In the design process of ONoCs, power loss is an important factor for limiting the scalability of ONoCs. Additionally, the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) is an index to measure the quality of ONoCs. Nowadays, the routing algorithm commonly used in ONoCs is the dimension-order routing algorithm, but the routing paths selected by the algorithm have high power loss and crosstalk noise. In this paper, we propose a 5×5 all-pass optical router model for two-dimensional (2-D) mesh-based ONoCs. Based on the general optical router model and the calculation models of power loss and crosstalk noise, a novel algorithm is proposed in ordder to select the routing paths with the minimum power loss. At the same time, it can ensure that the routing paths have the approximately optimal OSNR. Finally, we employ the Cygnus optical router to verify the proposed routing algorithm. The results show that the algorithm can effectively reduce the power loss and improve the OSNR in the case of network sizes of 5×5 and 6×6. With the increase of the optical network scale, the algorithm can perform better in reducing the power loss and raising the OSNR.

Abstract:As the scales of the optical networks grows continuously, the multi-dimensional reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer (ROADM) becomes the key node technology in the next generation communication networks. However, because of the high cost of the non-blocking high-degree optical switching fabric, the asymmetric switching fabric (i.e. there are unconnected ports in an optical node) can be widely used. To solve the inner-port connectivity aware (IPCA) routing and wavelength allocation problem, an integer linear programming (ILP) model is first formulated. Then three IPCA routing schemes are proposed, including the IPCA based on K-shortest pathe (IPCA-KSP) scheme, the IPCA-Dijkstra scheme and entire path searching (EPS) scheme. Simulation results show that, the EPS scheme can find the shortest path by enumeration, but its factorial computational complexity is not tolerable. The IPCA-KSP scheme cannot guarantee to find the shortest path, which only works effectively in small-scale networks. By modifying the path search process of the classical Dijkstra's algorithm, the IPCA-Dijkstra scheme can find the shortest path with low complexity.

Abstract:Herein, we address the resource allocation problem of an elastic optical network that serves time‐ and disruption‐sensitive traffic. Specifically, we propose a novel impairment‐aware routing, modulation, and spectrum allocation scheme that could successfully accommodate time‐sensitive traffic along the shortest path while causing minimum disruptions to existing connections as shown in the figure. Today, elastic optical networks (EONs) are required to accommodate traffic with different service priorities. For example, mission‐critical applications such as industrial internet, smart grids, and remote surgery require an ultra‐reliable low‐latency communication system. The novel impairment‐aware resource allocation scheme proposed here prioritises traffic. It satisfies the quality and latency requirements of mission‐critical traffic while causing minimum disruptions to other forms of low‐priority traffic connections. The results obtained for 6‐node and 14‐node networks under various traffic distribution environments indicate that the proposed algorithm achieves higher spectral efficiency, reduces spectrum fragmentation, and causes minimal disruptions over the benchmark algorithm.

Abstract:We propose an application based dynamically reconfigurable optical network on chip architecture and a power efficient reconfigurable optical router structure. The simulation results show the reconfigurable architecture can reduce path-setup delay by 70% compared with Torus and 43% compared with Firefly under a dynamic traffic.

Abstract:In communication networks, traffic carried over long paths suffers from a higher call blocking probability (CBP) than those carried over short paths. This is a well-known fairness problem. Such a problem becomes more serious in wavelength-routed optical networks (WRONs) due to the wavelength continuity constraint. This paper aims to enhance the fairness characteristic in WRONs by the novel classified alternate routing (CAR) approach. As a foundation of this approach, the first K-shortest paths (KSP) between a designated source/destination node pair in a given network should be obtained simultaneously. This has been studied as the KSP problem in the literature. In this paper, a new loopless deviation (LD) algorithm for solving such a loopless KSP problem will be proposed. It outperforms existing solutions in terms of running time in real-life implementations. In order to measure the fairness characteristic, we first classify all connection requests into categories such as 1-hop traffic, 2-hop traffic, etc., according to the number of minimal hop count between the corresponding source/destination node pair. We then quantify the fairness characteristic by the ratio of the average CBP of each traffic category to that of 1-hop traffic such that CBP ratios with a value closer to 1 are preferred. We will show that such a measure criterion is more precise and robust than existing ones in the literature. Finally, numerical experiments will reveal that the CAR approach outperforms existing fairness enhancement methods when considering the comprehensive performance in terms of the balance between the fairness characteristic and the overall CBP feature.

Abstract:A novel fine scheduling algorithm is introduced for upstream bandwidth allocation in an Ethernet-based passive optical network. This scheduling algorithm consists of an inter optical network unit (ONU) scheduler at the optical line terminal (OLT) and an intra-ONU scheduler at each ONU. In the inter-ONU scheduling, a novel GATE/REPORT approach is introduced to eliminate the unused remainders without transmission delay and maximize the utilization of bandwidth. Our novel intra-ONU scheduler gives fair bandwidth allocation to the queues of different priorities for each user in a hierarchical and decentralized way. Numerical results have shown that our overall scheduling algorithm can fulfill various requirements of delay and throughput for the transmission of multimedia traffic for each end user
A Novel Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation Scheme in EPONs

Abstract:EPONs use a point-to-multipoint topology, in which multiple optical network units (ONUs) share one uplink channel to transmit multimedia traffic to a control element, the optical line terminal (OLT). Hence, to avoid data collision on the shared uplink, ensure a contention-free transmission and so on, medium access control arbitration mechanisms are essential for the successful implementation of EPONs. In this paper, a novel dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm, the Integrated Two Classes Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation (ITCDBA), is put forward, in which the multipoint control protocol is used defined in the IEEE802.3ah standard. ITCDBA is a hierarchical allocation scheme which dynamically allocates bandwidth according to the instantaneous demands of ONUs, supporting inter-ONU priority scheduling as well as intra-ONU priority scheduling. The simulation result shows that the system throughput of EPON is improved with ITCDBA scheme and the drop rate of the traffic with the highest priority is lower than that with Two-layer bandwidth allocation (TLBA) scheme [11]. In a word, ITCDBA not only can allocate bandwidths between end users effectively and fairly, but also can support differentiated services. Besides, the system performance of EPONs with ITCDBA scheme is improved.

Abstract:Driven by the forthcoming of 5G mobile communications, the all-IP architecture of mobile core networks, i.e. evolved packet core (EPC) proposed by 3GPP, has been greatly challenged by the users' demands for higher data rate and more reliable end-to-end connection, as well as operators' demands for low operational cost. These challenges can be potentially met by software defined optical networking (SDON), which enables dynamic resource allocation according to the users' requirement. In this article, a novel network architecture for mobile core network is proposed based on SDON. A software defined network (SDN) controller is designed to realize the coordinated control over different entities in EPC networks. We analyze the requirement of EPC-lightpath (EPCL) in data plane and propose an optical switch load balancing (OSLB) algorithm for resource allocation in optical layer. The procedure of establishment and adjustment of EPCLs is demonstrated on a SDON-based EPC testbed with extended OpenFlow protocol. We also evaluate the OSLB algorithm through simulation in terms of bandwidth blocking ratio, traffic load distribution, and resource utilization ratio compared with link-based load balancing (LLB) and MinHops algorithms.

Abstract:Optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (O-OFDM) technology has the elastic feature of allocating spectrum resources based on subcarrier slots with bandwidths at a few GHz or even narrower. This feature enables us to utilize link capacity more efficiently by splitting a connection's traffic over multiple routing paths. In this paper, we propose a novel dynamic multi-path provisioning algorithm for O-OFDM based elastic optical networks. The algorithm tries to set up dynamic connections with single-path routing in a best-effort manner. When a connection cannot be served with a single routing path, the algorithm uses an auxiliary-graph based approach to calculate a multi-path provisioning scheme based on two parameters, i.e., the differential delay upper-bound and the bandwidth allocation granularity. Simulation results indicate that compared with several existing single-path provisioning algorithms, the proposed algorithm provides lower bandwidth blocking probability and achieves 10-18% improvement on average network throughput.

Abstract:All-optical networks (AON) provide large bandwidth, high-speed switching, and quality of service (QoS). However, the emergence of recent applications generating flexible traffic demands affects AON resource utilization and QoS management. These concerns are handled by AON using core nodes with large wavelength converters (WC) and fiber delay line (FDL) spaces, resulting in a high cost of implementation and operation. This paper proposes a hybrid core node architecture, upgrading existing nodes with limited effective modification to minimize physical topology costs. This hybrid architecture increases WC and FDL availability and reduces wavelength utilization according to traffic behavior. These new node functions are enabled using an advanced algorithm integrating a novel cost formulation merging WC and FDL with lightpath deflection (LD). This algorithm activates resource availabilities using a flexible QoS scheme considering the required and real-time traffic loss and blocking delay. The experimental results indicate that the proposed approach optimizes AON resources while guaranteeing required traffic demands compared to the existing techniques.

Abstract:Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) is a promising local subscribe access architecture that combines low cost point-to-multipoint passive optical network with Ethernet. One of the key problems in EPON is how to allocate the upstream bandwidth effectively. In the paper we present a dynamic bandwidth allocation scheme that will incorporates the priority operation into medium access control (MAC) protocol design to achieve quality of service (QoS) for subscribers. The scheme minimizes packet delay and delay variation for high priority traffic to ensure Qos through introducing a fixed cycle time. Simulation result proves that.
