Abstract:The concealment of time delay signature is one of the most critical issues in delayed-feedback optical chaotic systems. In this paper, we present a method to address this problem without significantly complicating the original architecture. By properly introducing a dispersion module into the feedback loop, a different frequency component of chaotic spectrum will be subject to different time delay in feedback loop, thus destroying the generation mechanism of time delay signature (TDS). The concealment performance is verified by both time-domain and spectrum analysis methods. The relation between the amplitude of TDS and cavity dispersion value is evaluated in detail. Since the dispersion module has no filtering effect, the chaotic bandwidth will not be affected during the TDS concealment process. This proposal solves the security problem of feedback chaotic systems without introducing much extra effort in implementation, and the underlying principle is not restricted to all-optical chaotic systems but applies for other optelectrical chaotic dynamics, which include a feedback cavity.

Abstract:A novel time-delay signature (TDS) concealing electro-optic (EO) chaotic system with multiply feedback nonlinear loops is proposed and analyzed by numerical simulation. The proposed system employs mutual injection structure implemented by two asymmetric branches named as multiply feedback nonlinear loop which introduces an extra nonlinear factor to the system dynamic equation. The complexity of the chaos system is increased by introducing this multiply feedback nonlinear loop. The permutation entropy (PE) of the proposed system is improved to higher than 0.96 when feedback strength (β) equals 5. The proposed system can enter to chaos regime with a small β (β = 0.8). The TDS is concealed effectively due to the extra nonlinear factor introduced by multiply feedback nonlinear loop. Meanwhile, key-space of the proposed system is about 1012 times that of the classical EO system because more tunable time delay parameters are introduced. Furthermore, the performance of a secure communication system based on the proposed chaotic system is discussed, and the simulation results show that the system is sensitive to time delay parameters and robust to feedback strength, which proves the proposed system is suitable for secure communication.

Abstract:A security-enhanced chaos communication scheme with time delay signature (TDS) suppression and phase-encrypted feedback light is proposed, in virtue of dual-loop feedback with independent high-speed phase modulation. We numerically investigate the property of TDS suppression in the intensity and phase space and quantitatively discuss security of the proposed system by calculating the bit error rate of eavesdroppers who try to crack the system by directly filtering the detected signal or by using a similar semiconductor laser to synchronize the link signal and extract the data. The results show that TDS embedded in the chaotic carrier can be well suppressed by properly setting the modulation frequency, which can keep the time delay a secret from the eavesdropper. Moreover, because the feedback light is encrypted, without the accurate time delay and key, the eavesdropper cannot reconstruct the symmetric operation conditions and decode the correct data.

Abstract:An external-cavity semiconductor laser with nonlinear optical feedback to generate broadband chaos with time delay signature(TDS) suppression is investigated. The system is composed of three semiconductor lasers, one of which is regarded as the chaos generator, while the other two play a role of a built-in nonlinear modulator in the external cavity of the generator. The results show that by properly setting the feedback strength and time delay of the first semiconductor laser in the nonlinear modulator, the TDS embedded in the intensity and phase time-series of the chaos can be effectively concealed in a wide range of frequency detuning.

Abstract:We numerically investigate the time delay signature (TDS) properties of a chaotic semiconductor laser subject to nonlinearly-modulated feedback. In the proposed scheme, two semiconductor lasers that play the role of a built-in nonlinear modulator is positioned in the external cavity of the chaos generator laser, which forms a structure of semiconductor laser ring. The simulation results show that the TDS of the chaos generator in the laser ring is quite smaller than that of the chaos induced by the conventional optical feedback. Moreover, the TDS embedded in the intensity and phase time-series of the chaotic signal can be further concealed, by introducing an additional optical feedback into the built-in nonlinear modulator.

Abstract:For solving the chaos synchronization problem between two chaotic systems with bidirectional coupling,a new synchronization method of chaotic systems based on time-delayed feedback was presented.Coupling coefficients between the drive and response systems were assumed identically and states were supposed to be linearly-coupled.Based on the Lyapunov stability theory,the condition was derived for synchronization according to the error dynamic system of the synchronization model.The scope of coupling parameters was obtained by solving Riccati equations. After delay time was selected appropriately,the effects of the states between the response system and the drive system were studied.The results show that the synchronization and control of systems can be guaranteed in the parameter scope.The trace of coupling chaotic systems can be synchronized by the changing delay time of control signal,and the system can be controlled to the fixed point or the period orbit.

Abstract:In this paper, we numerically investigate the concealing properties of time delay signature (TDS) in the chaotic output of a ring network composed of three mutually coupled semiconductor nano-lasers, comparing the TDS evolution between a ring network with identical coupling delays and a ring network with heterogeneous coupling delays. In simulations, an autocorrelation function is introduced to assess the system's capability in concealing the TDS. By examining the impacts of system parameters such as coupling strength, frequency detuning, Purcell factor , spontaneous radiation coupling factor , and bias current on the concealment of TDS, we identify the parameter ranges that successfully conceal TDS. The findings indicate that, compared to ring networks featuring identical coupling delays, those with heterogeneous delays can conceal TDS over a broader parameter range. Additionally, moderately and relatively small can expand the region of TDS concealment, while the influence of on TDS is relatively negligible in the ring network with heterogeneous delays.

Abstract:Time delay signature (TDS) is a key issue that affects the security performance of optical chaos communication. Currently, the autocorrelation function (ACF) and delayed mutual information (DMI) are two crucial methods to extract the TDS. Several strategies have been proposed to resist statistical analysis (i.e., ACF and DMI). However, a dynamic inverse modeling method has been proposed to identify TDS by utilizing the strong nonlinear inversion capability of deep learning, which brings about new threat. To resist this analysis, we propose a stratagem that one can increase the nonlinear dimensionality of the chaos system at the transmitter and concurrently reduce the dimensionality of transmitted signals, leading to “deficiency of data dimensionality”. A three-dimensional chaotic system is designed as the transmitter and only one-dimensional signal is transmitted for communication. Furthermore, a hybrid receiver is designed. The nonlinear model of the response system is realized by cooperation of an analog electro-optical link and a neural network in digital domain. The architecture not only destroys the possibility of TDS extraction but also preserves all necessary information required for chaos synchronization with low-complexity implementation.

Abstract:Time-delay signature (TDS) suppression of semiconductor lasers with external optical feedback is necessary to ensure the security of chaos-based secure communications. Here we numerically and experimentally demonstrate a technique to effectively suppress the TDS of chaotic lasers using quantum noise. The TDS and dynamical complexity are quantified using the autocorrelation function and normalized permutation entropy at the feedback delay time, respectively. Quantum noise from quadrature fluctuations of vacuum state is prepared through balanced homodyne measurement. The effects of strength and bandwidth of quantum noise on chaotic TDS suppression and complexity enhancement are investigated numerically and experimentally. Compared to the original dynamics, the TDS of this quantum-noise improved chaos is suppressed up to 94% and the bandwidth suppression ratio of quantum noise to chaotic laser is 1:25. The experiment agrees well with the theory. The improved chaotic laser is potentially beneficial to chaos-based random number generation and secure communication.

Abstract:Chaotic optical communication based on conventional external cavity semiconductor laser is a very promising solution for physical layer secure communication. However, the intrinsic time delay signature (TDS) associated with the external cavity length and the potential direct linear filtering (DLF) or synchronization utilization attack greatly threaten the system security. In this work, we propose and numerically demonstrate a novel scheme for TDS suppression and security enhancement of chaotic optical communication based on external temporal self-feedback hardware encryption and decryption. In this scheme, the confidential chaotic modulated signal is temporally scrambled in the time domain by two optical dispersion components and an electro-optic self-feedback phase modulation loop between them, which simultaneously conceal the TDS and enhance the security against malicious attacks. Proof-of-principle demonstration for a security enhanced chaotic optical communication system with error free transmission is successfully achieved. The proposed scheme may provide a promising way for pure-hardware based physical secure chaotic optical communication systems.

Abstract:For the first time, we experimentally demonstrate phase chaos generation by introducing a fine-controllable dispersion module into the feedback-delayed loop. To study the effect of this specific nonlinearity, we demonstrate the nonlinear dynamics evolution route in terms of the dependence of dispersion and feedback gain parameters by both experiment and simulation, which show good agreement. We also investigate the synchronization error variation with the dispersion mismatch to evaluate the security level of the proposed phase chaos system. The results show that the proposed approach can simultaneously simplify the phase chaos synchronization and enhance the key space, which has potential to be used in high-speed chaotic optical communications.

Abstract:In this paper, the presence of transmission delay and sampling delay in chaos-based secure communication systems by employing impulsive synchronization is studied. A time delayed impulsive differential system with delayed impulses, modeling the synchronization error between the driving and response schemes employed in such communication systems, is presented. The equi-attractivity property of the error dynamics is investigated and the sufficient conditions leading to this property are obtained. A set of upper bounds on the delay terms involved in the system are also obtained, and a numerical example is given. A communication security scheme employing hyperchaotic systems possessing continuous driving, impulsive driving and delay is proposed and simulation results are given to demonstrate the performance of the scheme.

Abstract:It is well known that nano-lasers (NLs), as important optical components, have attracted widespread attention for their output characteristics. In this paper, the dynamic behavior and time-delay concealment properties of NLs mutually coupled in open-loop, semi-open-loop, and closed-loop structures have been numerically investigated. We employ bifurcation diagrams and 0–1 chaos tests in our simulations to quantitatively analyze the dynamic properties of the system and introduce the autocorrelation function to evaluate the ability of the system to conceal the time-delay signature (TDS). In the meantime, the effects of the NL parameters and the controllable variables of the system on the TDS are studied. The results indicate that, compared with an open-loop structure without feedback, the mutual coupling scheme with added feedback is beneficial for the system to output high-quality chaotic signals. Furthermore, selecting a moderate Purcell factor F and a smaller spontaneous emission coupling factor β can achieve TDS concealment over a wider parameter range of injection intensity and frequency detuning.

Abstract:Based on a chaotic model we proposed previously (1996, 1998), a method for chaotic masking of signals in secure communications is established. As the model is described by a difference-differential equation, it can be viewed as a linear system with nonlinear delayed feedback. We inject a signal to be transmitted into the model equation as an input, and choose sum of the signal and the nonlinear part in the model as the transmitted signal, then the receiver will synchronize with the transmitter under drive of the transmitted signal. Abstract:An electro-optic (EO) chaotic system with time-delay signatures (TDS) concealment based on merging conversion structure is proposed and analyzed. The proposed system can generate high-complexity chaotic signal with a relatively small feedback gain coefficient, and the TDSs are concealed effectively compared to other methods. Meanwhile, the key space of the system is enhanced by introducing more tunable time delay, which is about the order of 1012. Moreover, the synchronization performance of the system is analyzed. The results show that the synchronization performance is robust to the feedback gain coefficient and extremely sensitive to time delay. The proposed system can effectively resist eavesdropping and provide security for optical networks.
