Abstract:A novel high-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL) technique for atmospheric aerosol remote sensing,which uses multi-longitudinal-mode laser as the transmitting light source,is proposed.A field-widened Michelson interferometer (FWMI) is used as the spectral discriminator,and the periodic frequency discrimination characteristic in the process of FWMI designing should match with the mode interval of multi-longitudinal-mode laser to ensure consistent fine spectral discrimination for the return signal from each longitudinal mode laser.The principle and the realization way of the proposed multi-longitudinal-mode HSRL are illustrated in detail and the main factors which constrain the frequency discrimination characteristic of the FWMI in multi-longitudinal-mode HSRL are discussed quantitatively.The performance of the proposed technique is verified further at the wavelength of 1064 nm by computer simulation.The multi-longitudinal-mode HSRL technique can avoid the dependence of the current HSRLs on the single multi-longitudinal-mode lasers remarkably.The proposed technique can not only decrease the cost,volume and weight of the laser in HSRL,but also improve its stability notably,which is of great significance for airborne and satellite-borne HSRL development in our country.

Abstract:High-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL) is a powerful tool for atmospheric aerosol remote sensing. The current HSRL technique often requires a single longitudinal mode laser as the transmitter to accomplish the spectral discrimination of the aerosol and molecular scattering conveniently. However, single-mode laser is cumbersome and has very strict requirements for ambient stability, making the HSRL instrument not so robust in many cases. In this paper, a new HSRL concept, called generalized HSRL technique with a multimode laser (MML-gHSRL), is proposed, which can work using a multimode laser. The MML-gHSRL takes advantage of the period characteristic of the spectral function of the interferometric spectral discrimination filter (ISDF) thoroughly. By matching the free spectral range of the ISDF with the mode interval of the multimode laser, fine spectral discrimination for the lidar return from each longitudinal mode can be realized. Two common ISDFs, i.e., the Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) and field-widened Michelson interferometer (FWMI), are introduced to develop the MML-gHSRL, and their performance is quantitatively analyzed and compared. The MML-gHSRL is a natural but significant generalization for the current HSRL technique based on the IDSF. It is potential that this technique would be a good entrance to future HSRL developments, especially in airborne and satellite-borne aerosol remote sensing applications.

Abstract:A novel scheimpflug lidar (S-lidar) based dual-channel detection approach is proposed and demonstrated for atmospheric aerosol measurement. As the use of the two sets of detection devices at the receiving end, two echo signals on the detection path are achieved by employing data interpolation fusion algorithms in signal processing. The resolution of the system is effectively improved, and the detection blind zone is reduced. Compared with the S-lidar system in which a single-channel detector is used, the resolution of the dual-channel S-lidar system can be improved by nearly 1.6X at 3km, and the detection blind spot can be reduced to 33 m. The developed system has a compact structure with a volume of approximately 0.5 m 3 .

Abstract:A three-wavelength Mie-scattering polarization Scheimpflug lidar system, utilizing 808-nm, 520-nm and 405-nm multimode laser diodes as light sources and two CMOS sensors as detectors, is developed for the studies of the aerosol extinction coefficient, depolarization ratio and the Ångström exponent. Atmospheric monitoring has been carried out on a near horizontal path from 23:00 January 14 th to 06:00 January 15 th , 2019 at Dalian, which is a coast city in Northern China. By studying the depolarization, aerosol extinction coefficient and Ångström exponent, it has been found out that a strong north wind blew away local spherical haze particles and brought external non-spherical large-size particles. The measurement results indicated a promising future of employing the present three-wavelength polarization Scheimpflug lidar system in the applications of atmospheric remote sensing.

Abstract:A dual field of view lidar system with two independent receivers is described to realize the detection of atmospheric aerosols. A CCD camera is attached to a backscatter lidar as a receiver to complement the data in the near-field range affected by the incomplete overlap between the laser beam and the receiver field of view. The signal detected by the CCD camera is corrected and finally glued with the signal of the backscatter lidar to retrieve the aerosol extinction coefficient with Fernald algorithm. The aerosol extinction profile and visibilities measured by the dual field of lidar had been compared with the results measured by another general backscatter lidar and a surface aerosol instrument, respectively. The results suggested that the dual field of view lidar based on a CCD camera is feasible and reliable. It could obtain the data both in the near and in the far range simultaneously, improving the detection accuracy of the lidar system effectively.

Abstract:In this work, an 808-nm Scheimpflug lidar (SLidar) system, employing a laser diode as the light source and an image sensor as the detector, has been utilized for practical applications of air pollution monitoring in urban area. A comprehensive retrieval method has been proposed and developed for reliable and automatic retrieval of the aerosol extinction coefficient (AEC) from near-horizontal scanning SLidar measurements. The characteristics of the pixel-intensity curves measured by the SLidar system have been statistically examined, and a quality control process is developed to eliminate abnormal lidar profiles. An improved Douglas-Pucker algorithm has been utilized for the determination of the boundary value of the AEC. The AEC profile is thus obtained according to the Klett method with the boundary value as the input. Meanwhile, an angular iterative retrieval (AIR) algorithm has been developed with the AECs at neighboring scanning angles as references, which is able to significantly improve the retrieval reliability of the AEC for each scanning angle. Comparison studies with a local pollution monitoring station have also been carried out to verify the present retrieval method. Besides, the Scheimpflug lidar technique in combination with the retrieval method has shown promising performance in tracking pollution sources in urban area.

Abstract:A polarized micropulse lidar (P-MPL) employing a pulsed laser at 532 nm was developed by the Institute of Oceanographic Instrumentation, Qilu University of Technology (Shandong Academy of Sciences). The optomechanical structure, technical parameters, detection principle, overlap factor calculation method, and inversion methods of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) depth and depolarization ratio (DR) were introduced. Continuous observations using the P-MPL were carried out at Xi’an Meteorological Bureau, and the observation data were analyzed. In this study, we gleaned much information on aerosols and clouds, including the temporal and spatial variation of aerosols and clouds, aerosol extinction coefficient, DR, and the structure of ABL were obtained by the P-MPL. The variation of aerosols and clouds before and after a short rainfall was analyzed by combining time-height-indication (THI) of range corrected signal (RCS) and DR was obtained by the P-MPL with profiles of potential temperature (PT) and relative humidity (RH) detected by GTS1 Digital Radiosonde. Then, the characteristics of tropopause cirrus cloud were discussed using the data of DR, PT, and RH. Finally, a haze process from January 1st to January 5th was studied by using aerosol extinction coefficients obtained by the P-MPL, PT, and RH profiles measured by GTS1 Digital Radiosonde and the time-varying of PM2.5 and PM10 observed by ambient air quality monitor. The source of the haze was simulated by using the NOAA HYSPLIT Trajectory Model.

Abstract:An innovative complex lidar system deployed on an airborne rotorcraft platform for remote sensing of atmospheric pollution is proposed and demonstrated. The system incorporates integrated-path differential absorption lidar (DIAL) and coherent-doppler lidar (CDL) techniques using a dual tunable TEA CO2 laser in the 9–11 μm band and a 1.55 μm fiber laser. By combining the principles of differential absorption detection and pulsed coherent detection, the system enables agile and remote sensing of atmospheric pollution. Extensive static tests validate the system's real-time detection capabilities, including the measurement of concentration-path-length product (CL), front distance, and path wind speed of air pollution plumes over long distances exceeding 4 km. Flight experiments is conducted with the helicopter. Scanning of the pollutant concentration and the wind field is carried out in an approximately 1 km slant range over scanning angle ranges from 45° to 65°, with a radial resolution of 30 m and 10 s. The test results demonstrate the system's ability to spatially map atmospheric pollution plumes and predict their motion and dispersion patterns, thereby ensuring the protection of public safety.

Abstract:With the conjunction of tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy technology (TDLAS) and the open long optical path technology, the system designing scheme of CO2 on-line monitoring based on near infrared tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy technology was discussed in detail, and the instrument for large-range measurement was set up. By choosing the infrared absorption line of CO2 at 1.57 microm whose line strength is strong and suitable for measurement, the ambient atmospheric CO2 was measured continuously with a 30 s temporal resolution at an suburb site in the autumn of 2007. The diurnal atmospheric variations of CO2 and continuous monitoring results were presented. The results show that the variation in CO2 concentration has an obvious diurnal periodicity in suburb where the air is free of interference and contamination. The general characteristic of diurnal variation is that the concentration is low in the daytime and high at night, so it matches the photosynthesis trend. The instrument can detect gas concentration online with high resolution, high sensitivity, high precision, short response time and many other advantages, the monitoring requires no gas sampling, the calibration is easy, and the detection limit is about 4.2 x 10(-7). It has been proved that the system and measurement project are feasible, so it is an effective method for gas flux continuous online monitoring of large range in ecosystem based on TDLAS technology.

Abstract:Lidar is a reliable tool for active remote sensing detection of atmospheric aerosols. A multi-wavelength aerosol lidar (MWAL) with 355 nm, 532 and 1064 nm as detection light sources has been developed and deployed for operational observations at Haidian District Meteorological Service of Beijing. The structure design, specifications, observation campaign, and detection principle of the MWAL are introduced. To ensure the accuracy and reliability of the lidar observation data, the calibration contents, and methods of lidar are proposed, including the correction, and gluing of the original data, the collimation of the transmitting and receiving optical axes, the testing of signal saturation, the correction of molecular Rayleigh fitting and the determination of the depolarization ratio correction factor. Finally, a haze process from 29 September to 2 October 2019 was observed and analyzed using the data of lidar, digital radiosonde, air quality and relative humidity observed by the Haidian District Meteorological Service. The detection results show the reliability of lidar which can effectively obtain the temporal and spatial variation characteristics of the haze. The profiles of aerosol extinction coefficient, potential temperature and relative humidity can be effectively used to analyze the haze thickness and the influence of relative humidity on aerosol particles. The data of air quality monitor shows that PM 10 is the main pollutant and the ratio of PM 2.5 /PM 10 is negatively correlated with relative humidity. Finally, the HYSPLIT trajectory tracking model of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is used to further study the source of pollutants in this haze process.

Abstract:Mixing layer height (MLH) is a key parameter for evaluating the transport and diffusion of atmospheric pollutants in both air quality forecasting and satellite data retrieval. However, there is a lack of methods for obtaining the nocturnal MLH. In this study, a novel instrument named the charge-coupled device-laser aerosol detection system (CCD-LADS) was developed to study the nocturnal MLH and boundary layer structure from the surface. The system mainly includes a continuous laser and a charge-coupled device camera with a fisheye lens. Structures of atmospheric layers characterized by the CCD-LADS were compared with those measured by a ceilometer. The heights of two atmospheric layers quantified by measurements with the CCD-LADS and the ceilometer show good agreement, with a relative difference of 5%. The results of this comparison demonstrated that the CCD-LADS is capable of distinctly identifying the nocturnal vertical structure of the atmosphere. The advantage of the CCD-LADS in retrieving the nocturnal MLH is that the CCD-LADS can provide the boundary layer structures under 100 m, while the ceilometer and other lidar measurements cannot retrieve the atmospheric structures below that altitude. CCD-LADS was deployed in a comprehensive field campaign measuring air pollution in the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, located at the border between the North China Plain and Yanshan Mountain, during January 2016. The fine characteristics and patterns of the nocturnal boundary layer structures were derived with the CCD-LADS measurements.

Abstract:Stratospheric aerosols play an important role in the atmospheric chemical and radiative balance. To detect the stratospheric aerosol layer, a 1064 nm lidar with high resolution and large dynamic range is developed using a superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD). Measurements are typically performed at 1064 nm for its sensitivity to aerosol, whereas detectors are limited by low efficiency and high dark count rate (DCR). SNSPDs are characterized by high efficiency in the infrared wavelength domain, as well as low noise and dead time, which can significantly enhance the signal quality. However, it is still challenging to build an SNSPD with both large active area and high count rate. To improve the maximal count rate (MCR) so as to avoid saturation in the near range, a 16-pixel interleaved SNSPD array and a multichannel data acquisition system are developed. As a reference, a synchronous system working at 532 nm is applied. In a continuous comparison experiment, backscatter ratio profiles are retrieved with resolutions of 90 m/3 min, and the 1064 nm system shows better performance, which is sensitive to aerosols and immune to the contamination of the ozone absorption and density of molecule change in the lower stratosphere.

Abstract:A micro-pulse lidar at eye-safe wavelength is constructed based on an upconversion single-photon detector. The ultralow-noise detector enables using integration technique to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the atmospheric backscattering even at daytime. With pulse energy of 110 μJ, pulse repetition rate of 15 kHz, optical antenna diameter of 100 mm and integration time of 5 min, a horizontal detection range of 7 km is realized. In the demonstration experiment, atmospheric visibility over 24 h is monitored continuously, with results in accordance with the weather forecasts.

Abstract:Developments in mid-infrared Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL), for gas remote sensing, have received a significant amount of research in recent years. In this paper, a high repetition rate tunable mid-infrared DIAL, mounted on a mobile platform, has been built for long range remote detection of gas plumes. The lidar uses a solid-state tunable optical parametric oscillator laser, which can emit laser pulse with repetition rate of 500 Hz and between the band from 2.5 μm to 4 μm. A monitoring channel has been used to record the laser energy in real-time and correct signals. Convolution correction technology has also been incorporated to choose the laser wavelengths. Taking NO2 and SO2 as examples, lidar system calibration experiment and open field observation experiment have been carried out. The observation results show that the minimum detection sensitivity of NO2 and SO2 can reach 0.07 mg/m3, and 0.31 mg/m3, respectively. The effective temporal resolution can reach second level for the high repetition rate of the laser, which demonstrates that the system can be used for the real-time remote sensing of atmospheric pollution gas.

Abstract:A system for continuous-wave coherent Doppler lidar (CW lidar), made up of all-fiber structures and a coaxial transmission telescope, was set up for wind measurement in Hefei (31.84 N, 117.27 E), Anhui province of China. The lidar uses a fiber laser as a light source at a wavelength of 1.55 mu m, and focuses the laser beam on a location 80 m away from the telescope. Using the CW lidar, radial wind measurement was carried out. Subsequently, the spectra of the atmospheric backscattered signal were analyzed. We tested the noise and obtained the lower limit of wind velocity as 0.721 m/s, through the Rayleigh criterion. According to the number of Doppler peaks in the radial wind spectrum, a classification retrieval algorithm (CRA) combining a Gaussian fitting algorithm and a spectral centroid algorithm is designed to estimate wind velocity. Compared to calibrated pulsed coherent wind lidar, the correlation coefficient for the wind velocity is 0.979, with a standard deviation of 0.103 m/s. The results show that CW lidar offers satisfactory performance and the potential for application in wind measurement.

Abstract:Aerosol liquid water content (ALWC) plays fundamental roles in atmospheric radiation and chemical processes. However, there is little information about ALWC vertical distribution due to the lack of sufficient measurement. In this study, a novel method to retrieve ALWC using a polarization lidar is proposed. By analyzing lidar measurement combined with in situ chemical composition measurements at the surface, the particle linear depolarization ratio delta(p) is found to be well correlated with the liquid water mass fraction. The method is built upon a valid relationship between delta(p) and the ratio of ALWC to the particle backscatter coefficient. ALWC can be retrieved with a relative error of 30% with this method. A case study shows that the ALWC in upper levels of the boundary layer may be different from that at the ground, suggesting the importance of measuring ALWC vertical profiles during haze episodes. The study proves that polarization lidars have the potential to retrieve vertical distributions of ALWC which benefit studies on haze formation.

Abstract:Aerosol phase function represents the angular scattering property of aerosols, which is crucial for understanding the climate effects of aerosols that have been identified as one of the largest uncertainties in the evaluation of radiative forcing. So far, there is a lack of instruments with which to measure the aerosol phase function directly and accurately in laboratory studies and in situ measurements. A portable instrument with high angular range and resolution has been developed for the measurement of the phase function of ambient aerosols in this study. The charge-coupled device-laser aerosol detective system (CCD-LADS) measures the aerosol phase function both across a relatively wide angular range of 10–170° and at a high resolution of 0.1°. The system includes a continuous laser, two charge-coupled device cameras and the corresponding fisheye lenses. The CCD-LADS was validated by both a laboratory study and a field measurement. The comparison between the aerosol phase function retrieved from CCD-LADS and Mie-scattering model shows good agreement. Compared with the TSI polar nephelometer, CCD-LADS has the advantages of wider detection range and better stability.
Identification of fluorescent aerosol observed by a spectroscopic lidar over northwest China

Abstract:Bioaerosols play a significant role in climate change and variation of ecological environment. To investigate characterization of atmospheric bioaerosols, we conducted lidar measurement for observing bioaerosols close to dust sources over northwest China in April, 2014. The developed lidar system can not only allowed us to measure the 32-channel fluorescent spectrum between 343 nm to 526 nm with a spectral resolution of 5.8 nm but also simultaneously detect polarisation measurements at 355 nm and 532 nm, as well as Raman scattering signals at 387 nm and 407 nm. According to the findings, the lidar system was able to pick up the robust fluorescence signal emitted by dust aerosols. Especially the polluted dust, the fluorescence efficiency could reach 0.17. In addition, the efficiency of single-band fluorescence typically rises as the wavelength goes up and the ratio of fluorescence efficiency of polluted dust, dust, air pollutant and background aerosols is about 4:3:8:2. Moreover, our results demonstrate that simultaneous measurements of depolarization at 532 nm and fluorescence could better distinguish fluorescent aerosols than those at 355 nm. This study enhances the ability of laser remote sensing for real-time detecting bioaerosol in the atmosphere.

Abstract:We have developed a scanning Lidar system in this work to detect urban air pollution changes in real time and locate the sources of urban air pollution. We first proposed an algorithm to retrieve atmospheric extinction coefficients, which we used to create Lidar maps. Using Lidar map of the average extinction coefficients, we identified the locations of the local maximum values, and hence, the positions of the urban air pollution sources. Experimental results indicate that this method is effective for urban air pollution monitoring.
