Abstract:We report the first 5x20.41-Gb/s all-optical wavelength multicasting of DMT signals by using multi-mode injection locking in the FP laser. The averaged power penalty is 2.8 dB at the FEC BER limit of 2.3 x 10(-3).

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate an O-band single-lane 200 Gb/s intensity modulation direct detection (IM/DD) transmission system using a low-chirp, broadband, and high-power directly modulated laser (DML). The employed laser is an isolator-free packaged module with over 65-GHz modulation bandwidth enabled by a distributed feedback plus passive waveguide reflection (DFB+R) design. We transmit high baud rate signals over 20-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) without using any optical amplifiers and demodulate them with reasonably low-complexity digital equalizers. We generate and detect up to 170 Gbaud non-return-to-zero on-off-keying (NRZ-OOK), 112 Gbaud 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4), and 100 Gbaud PAM6 in the optical back-to-back configuration. After transmission over the 20-km optical-amplifier-free SSMF link, up to 150 Gbaud NRZ-OOK, 106 Gbaud PAM4, and 80 Gbaud PAM6 signals are successfully received and demodulated, achieving bit error rate (BER) performance below the 6.25%-overhead hard-decision (HD) forward-error-correction code (FEC) limit. The demonstrated results show the possibility of meeting the strict requirements towards the development of 200 Gb/s/lane IM/DD technologies, targeting 800 Gb/s and 1.6 Tb/s LR applications.

Abstract:All-optical wavelength multicasting is presented and experimentally demonstrated for 40 Gbit/s polarization-division-multiplexed (PDM) nonreturn-to-zero quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) signals using four-wave mixing (FWM) with angled-polarization pumps in a silicon waveguide. Five multicast channels are obtained on the generated idlers. The eye diagrams, constellation diagrams, and bit error rates (BERs) of the QPSK sequences on the two polarization states are measured for each wavelength channel. Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the transmission of a 200 Gbit/s discrete multitone (DMT) at the soft forward error correction limit in an intensity-modulation directdetection system with a single C-band packaged distributed feedback laser and traveling-wave electro absorption modulator (DFB-TWEAM), digital-to-analog converter and photodiode. The bit-power loaded DMT signal is transmitted over 1.6 km standard single-mode fiber with a net rate of 166.7 Gbit/s, achieving an effective electrical spectrum efficiency of 4.93 bit/s/Hz. Meanwhile, net rates of 174.2 Gbit/s and 179.5 Gbit/s are also demonstrated over 0.8 km SSMF and in an optical back-to-back case, respectively. The feature of the packaged DFB-TWEAM is presented. The nonlinearity-aware digital signal processing algorithm for channel equalization is mathematically described, which improves the signal-to-noise ratio up to 3.5 dB. Abstract:Wavelength conversion and five-channel multicasting for 20 Gbit/s quadrature phase-shift keying signals have been experimentally demonstrated based on four-wave mixing in a silicon waveguide with digital coherent detection. The eye diagrams and constellation diagrams of the converted and multicasting idlers are successfully observed. Moreover, the bit-error rates (BERs) of the generated idlers are measured and the power penalties are all less than 0.7 dB at a BER of 3×10(-3).

Abstract:Multicasting is an important function of wavelength-routing optical communication networks. An all-optical multicasting is presented and experimentally demonstrated based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in highly nonlinear fibers. An input signal with data information together with a pump are injected into a highly nonlinear fiber and two idlers with new frequencies can be generated through two degenerate FWM processes, which carry the same data information as the input signal. The single input signal is copied to two channels and the pump can also be modulated by this data. The advantage of this scheme consists in the simple configuration, where only a single pump is needed and no other injected lights are required, the uniform powers and tunable wavelengths of the multicasting signals, and the capacity to further increase multicasting channel number.

Abstract:With the increasing demand of bandwidth, a higher capacity communication system is required for short-reach optical link. Intensity modulation/direct detection (IM-DD) is considered as a reasonable method, due to its low cost and power consumption. In the aspect of digital signal processing (DSP), discrete Fourier transform-spread (DFT-s) precoding can be used to reduce peak to average power ratio (PAPR) and average the noise among the subcarriers. In addition, probabilistic shaping (PS) turns out to further increase the system capacity. We experimentally demonstrated a 200 Gbit/s single λ dual band DMT transmission with a spectrum efficiency (SE) of 6.29 bit/s/Hz. The achievable information rate (AIR) of the proposed dual band signal increases about 30 Gbit/s compared with that of single band signal. Moreover, single-sideband (SSB) signal and signal with guard band are implemented to mitigate the frequency selective fading of optical fiber chromatic dispersion (CD). The performance of these two methods are quite closed for short reach transmission. Considering the signal-signal beat interference (SSBI) introduced by the SSB signal, an extra Volterra filter is applied in DSP. Besides, an extra optical filter is required to generate the SSB signal.

Abstract:OFDM superchannel that consists of multiple low speed individually-modulated subbands has been proposed for high speed optical transmission and flexible optical networks with multiple data rate accommodation. In this work, we investigate the feasibility of superchannel multicasting and verify it utilizing multiple-pump FWM in highly nonlinear fiber. 400 Gb/s PDM-OFDM superchannel that consists of ten subbands is successfully delivered from one superchannel to up to seven different superchannels with error free operation. Pump power and signal power are also optimized to achieve the optimal multicasting performance.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate C-band 2 x 56 Gb/s pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM)-4 signal transmission over 100 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) using 18 GHz direct-modulated lasers (DMLs) and direct detection, without inline optical amplifier. A delay interferometer (DI) at the transmitter side is used to extend the transmission reach from 40 to 100 km. A digital Volterra filter at the receiver side is used to mitigate the nonlinear distortions. We obtain an average bit error ratio (BER) of 1.5 x 10(-3) for 2 x 56 Gb/s PAM-4 signal after 100 km SSMF transmission at the optimal input power, which is below the 7% forward error correction (FEC) threshold (3.8 x 10(-3)). Abstract:We present a comprehensive performance analysis of injection-locked directly modulated laser (DML) for optical communication systems, focusing on both non-return-to-zero (NRZ) and 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) signal transmission. We demonstrate real-time PAM4 40 Gbit/s transmission over 10 km of single-mode fiber enabled by optical injection locking without pre-emphasis or post-equalization, achieving a bit error rate (BER) below , and doubling capacity compared to unlocked transmission with the same laser. Our study investigates the dependence of system performance on the injected power and frequency offset of the master laser. Results indicate that lower injection powers while maintaining a stable locking regime, yield better performance in terms of extinction ratio and BER. Optimized parameters lead to enhanced transmission performance, providing valuable insights into the design and optimization of injection-locked DML systems for optical communication applications employing direct modulation.

Abstract:We propose a dual-stage multi-pump FWM scheme for all-optical signal multicasting in HNLF. Based on the scheme, we experimentally demonstrate 25GHz-spaced l-to-49 multicasting of PDM OFDM signal using 6 pumps. All replicas exhibit performance above 7% FEC threshold with Q-factor margin of no less than 1dB. To the best our knowledge, this is the largest reported replica count in the context of all-optical multicasting of PDM OFDM signals.
