Abstract:The development of multi-luminescent centers integrated phosphors with high-quality and tunable white light emission is highly desirable for practical applications in solid-state lighting, but it remains challenging. Herein, a novel strategy of integrating dyes and perovskite nanocrystals into different locations of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) to achieve high-performance white lighting-emitting diodes (WLEDs) is proposed. Based on the emerging dyes encapsulated MOF system, CsPbX3 nanocrystals (NCs) with high PLQY and tunable bandgap are utilized to be the additional emission centers, contributing to spectral complementarity and energy transfer. The spatial separation of dyes and CsPbX3 NCs results in no mutual interference between each other during loading, enabling more flexible emission tuning. The resulting LED based on the combination of ZIF-8⸧pm567A/SRh101@CsPbClBr2-SiO2 and a 460 nm blue LED chip exhibits exceptional Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.329, 0.334), moderate correlated color temperature (CCT) of 5681 K and high color-rendering index (CRI) of 88. In addition, cold WLEDs and warm WLEDs are also realized by only fine-tuning the loading amounts of CsPbClBr2 NCs, without sacrifice of the high CRI. This strategy offers a new perspective for the design of white light-emitting phosphors with excellent color quality and facilitates the advancement of high-performance WLEDs.

Abstract:Phosphor‐converted white light‐emitting diodes (pc‐WLEDs), as a main approach of solid‐state white light illumination, have caught tremendous attention and achieved enormous progress in the past decades. Since the phosphor plays a dominating role in the final property of pc‐WLEDs, the exploration for high‐performance phosphor has become a challenging and targeted research topic. In this regard, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are emerging to offer a fascinating platform for well color‐tuning flexibility and designability endowed by their diversified architectures, devisable pore structures and affluent luminescent centers. In this review, the design strategies of achieving high‐performance phosphor with the doping of luminescent lanthanide ions, organic ligands, and diverse luminescent guest species including organic dyes, metal complexes, quantum dots in MOF matrix are highlighted, and the representative advances in the development of MOF phosphor are presented, providing guidance and reference for further research of phosphor for pc‐WLEDs.

Abstract:Encapsulating luminescence units into porous metal-organic frameworks to obtain white-light emission has attracted much attention because of their high designability and excellent color-tuning flexibility. In this study, two types of luminescence units with different emission color coverage, namely green-emitting carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and red-emitting rhodamine B (RhB) molecules, were encapsulated into porous ZIF-8 to obtain the yellow-emitting composite phosphor for use in white light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Single-phase single-shell CQDs&2, as well as single-phase multi-shell 2@2, were fabricated and fine-tuned (by varying the amount of accommodated CQDs and RhB) so that the emitted color is near that of the commercial yellow-emitting phosphor. The multi-shell 2@2 has much better luminescence efficiency than that of the single-shell one. This is because the multi-shell structure provides a much larger separation distance of the encapsulated guest units, diminishing the energy-transfer-caused efficiency decrease. It is also shown that a bright source of white light can be realized by coating the 2@2 nanocomposite on a commercial blue (460 nm) LED chip.

Abstract:The development of white light emitting diodes (WLEDs) holds great promise for replacing traditional lighting devices due to high efficiency, low energy consumption and long lifetime. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with a wide range of luminescent behaviors are ideal candidates to produce white light emission in the phosphor-converted WLEDs. Encapsulation of emissive organic dyes is a simple way to obtain luminescent MOFs. In this review, we summarize the recent progress on the design and constructions of dye encapsulated luminescent MOFs phosphors. Different strategies are highlighted where white light emitting phosphors were obtained by combining fluorescent dyes with metal ions and linkers.

Abstract:A strategy by encapsulating organic dyes into the pores of a luminescent metal‐organic framework (MOF) is developed to achieve white‐light‐emitting phosphor. Both the red‐light emitting dye 4‐(p‐dimethylaminostyryl)‐1‐methylpyridinium (DSM) and the green‐light emitting dye acriflavine (AF) are encapsulated into a blue‐emitting anionic MOF ZJU‐28 through an ion‐exchange process to yield the MOF⊃dye composite ZJU‐28⊃DSM/AF. The emission color of the obtained composite can be easily modulated by simply adjusting the amount and component of dyes. With careful adjustment of the relative concentration of the dyes DSM and AF, the resulting ZJU‐28⊃DSM/AF (0.02 wt% DSM, 0.06 wt% AF) exhibits a broadband white emission with ideal CIE coordinates of (0.34, 0.32), high color‐rendering index value of 91, and moderate correlated color temperature value of 5327 K. Such a strategy can be easily expanded to other luminescent MOFs and dyes, thus opening a new perspective for the development of white light emitting materials.
A fluorescence/phosphorescence dual-emitting metal-organic framework exhibiting two approaches for single-phase white-light emission

Abstract:The unique features of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) endow the huge advantages for room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and as host matrices for multiple emission and single-phase white light. Herein, a new biluminescent MOF ([Cd3(TCPBDA)2]·8DMF·2H2O, 1) was successfully synthesized. Compound 1 itself exhibits the white-light emission due to fluorescence-phosphorescence dual emission. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first example that the single-phase white emission could be obtained by the construction of biluminescent MOF. Compound 1 was also employed as the energy transfer host matrix with the encapsulation of red guest emitter 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-(p-dimethylaminostyryl)-4H-pyran (DCM) into framework via one-pot process. The high energy transfer efficiency was occurred from host to guest, importantly, the single-phase phosphor –1 (0.15 wt% DCM) displays warm white light with CIE coordinates of (0.33, 0.33). In addition, a WLED lamp with compound 1 as phosphor was prepared, exhibiting moderate correlated color temperature (CCT) of 4779 K and color-rendering index (CRI) of 71. These results open a new perspective for the development of single-phase white-light materials.

Abstract:The technology of combining multiple emission centers to exploit white-light-emitting (WLE) materials by taking advantage of porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is mature, but preparing undoped WLE MOFs remains a challenge. Herein, a pressure-treated strategy is reported to achieve efficient white photoluminescence (PL) in undoped [Zn(Tdc)(py)]n nanocrystals (NCs) at ambient conditions, where the Commission International del'Eclairage coordinates and color temperature reach (0.31, 0.37) and 6560 K, respectively. The initial [Zn(Tdc)(py)]n NCs exhibit weak-blue PL consisting of localized excited (LE) and planarized intramolecular charge transfer (PLICT) states. After pressure treatment, the emission contributions of LE and PLICT states are balanced by increasing the planarization of subunits, thereby producing white PL. Meanwhile, the reduction of nonradiative decay triggered by the planarized structure results in 5-fold PL enhancement. Phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes based on pressure-treated samples show favorable white-light characteristics. The finding provides a new platform for the development of undoped WLE MOFs.

Abstract:The development of phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) with high quantum yield, high color-rendering index (CRI), and moderate correlated color temperature is highly desirable and remains a challenging task. Herein, a new yellow phosphor is designed and synthesized via the simultaneous encapsulation of three highly luminescent dyes, Cou-6, R6G, and R101 into microporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) ZJU-28. Due to the matched spectral overlap and efficient energy transfer processes among these dyes within MOFs, the single-phase phosphor ZJU-28 superset of Cou-6/R6G/R101 (0.016 wt% Cou-6, 0.010 wt% R6G, and 0.014 wt% R101) emits bright and warm white light with high quantum yield of 82.9%, under the excitation of 460 nm blue light. In addition, by integrating the MOF phosphor on commercially available 460 nm blue LED chips, a high performance WLED lamp with a luminous efficiency value of 126 lm W-1, moderate correlated color temperature of 4446 K, and high CRI of 88 is obtained, opening a new perspective for the development of white-light-emitting diodes.

Abstract:The unique features of the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), including ultrahigh porosities and surface areas, tunable pores, endow the MOFs with special utilizations as host matrices. In this work, various neutral and ionic guest dye molecules, such as fluorescent brighteners, coumarin derivatives, 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-(p-dimethylaminostyryl)-4H-pyran (DCM), and 4-(p-dimethylaminostyryl)-1-methylpyridinium (DSM), are encapsulated in a neutral MOF, yielding novel blue-, green-, and red-phosphors, respectively. Furthermore, this study introduces the red-, green-, and blue-emitting dyes into a MOF together for the first time, producing white-light materials with nearly ideal Commission International ed'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates, high color-rendering index values (up to 92%) and quantum yields (up to 26%), and moderate correlated color temperature values. The white light is tunable by changing the content or type of the three dye guests, or the excitation wavelength. Significantly, the introduction of blue-emitting guests in the methodology makes the available MOF host more extensive, and the final white-light output more tunable and high-quality. Such strategy can be widely adopted to design and prepare white-light-emitting materials.

Abstract:Single-phase phosphors are promising materials for the production of new white-light-emitting diodes (WLEDs), whereas efficient white-light-emitting phosphors with high color rendering index (CRI) values still remain rare. Herein, we report a new metal–organic framework (MOF) [Zn4O(BCTA)1.5] (BUT-119) with high porosity and intense blue photoluminescence emission, which is constructed from a bicarbazole-based ligand, 4,4′,4″,4‴-(9,9′-bicarbazole-3,3′,6,6′-tetrayl)tetrabenzolate (BCTA4–), and Zn4O cluster. The simultaneous encapsulation of a red-emitting dye, Rhodamine B (RhB) or Basic Red 2 (BR), and a green-emitting dye, Acriflavine (AF), into the pores of BUT-119 results in two single-phase white phosphors, AF/RhB@BUT-119 and AF/BR@BUT-119, showing bright and warm white light emission with high quantum yields (22% and 19%) due to efficient energy transfer among the MOF host and the guest dye molecules. Noteworthily, the CRI values of AF/RhB@BUT-119 and AF/BR@BUT-119 are high up to 94, higher than those of previously reported white-light-emitting MOF-based materials, suggesting their high potential in the fabrication of WLEDs.

Color-Tunable and High-Efficiency Dye-Encapsulated Metal-Organic Framework Composites Used for Smart White-Light-Emitting Diodes

Abstract:Luminescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) (typically dye-encapsulated MOFs) are considered as one kind of interesting downconversion materials for white-light-emitting diodes (LEDs), but their quantum efficiency (QE) is not sufficient and thus needs to be significantly enhanced for practical applications. In this study, we successfully synthesized a series of Rh@bio-MOF-1 (Rh = rhodamine) with an internal QE as high as similar to 79% via a solvothermal reaction followed by cation exchanges. The high efficiency of the Rh@bio-MOF-1 composites was attributable to the high intrinsic luminescent efficiency of the selected Rh dyes, the confinement effect in the bio-MOF-1 host, and the uniform particle morphology. The emission maximum could be continuously tuned from 550 to 610 nm by controlling the species and concentration of encapsulated dye molecules, showing great color tunability of the dye-encapsulated MOFs. The emission lifetime of similar to 7 ns was 1 or 2 magnitude orders shorter than that of Ce3+- or Eu2+-doped inorganic phosphors, allowing for visible light communication (VLC). White LEDs, fabricated by using the synthesized Rh@bio-MOF-1 composite and inorganic phosphors of green (Ba,Sr)(2)SiO4:Eu2+ and red CaAlSiN3:Eu2+, exhibited a high color rendering index of 80-94, a luminous efficacy of 94-156 lm/W, and an excellent stability in color point against drive current. The Rh@bio-MOF-1 composites with tunable colors, short emission lifetime, and high QE are expected to be used for smart white LEDs with multifunctions of both lighting and VLC.
Dynamic multi-color long-afterglow and cold-warm white light through phosphorescence resonance energy transfer in host-guest metal-organic frameworks

Abstract:Dynamic tuning of single-color and multi-color (including white-light) luminescence has attracted much attention for applications in various fields; however, effective systems are still scarcity to date. Herein, we report the construction of host-guest metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) serves as an effective strategy to achieve the excitation- and time-dependent long afterglow and white light emitting, simultaneously. The guest-induced structural distortion modulates the single-triplet state intersystem crossing, promotes ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (LLCT) in layer-column MOFs, and further boosts multiple exciton generation of triplet states for multi-color ultralong phosphorescence, as indicated by both experiment and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. By further doping of dyes into MOFs, white-light emitting with tunable color temperature can be facilely obtained, which has been further fabricated into white-light light-emitting diode (LED) with color rendering index of 88.4, higher than that of most as-reported pure inorganics and inorganic-organic hybrid systems. Therefore, this work not only describes a host-guest energy transfer route for dynamic tailoring wide range of color-tunable long-afterglow, but also explores the application prospect of new white-light materials with high color rendering and low blue light for promising display and lighting applications.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are well known for their tunable structure and porosity with various important applications. In particular, their performance can be further improved by encapsulating luminescent guest molecules or lanthanide ions. This work aims to develop tunable colors and white-light emission materials by encapsulation of organic molecules and Eu3+ (or Tb3+) ions within a porous MOF (USTC-1). Various guest organic molecules or lanthanide ions are encapsulated into this MOF, yielding blue, blue-green, green, pink and red phosphorescence, respectively. Significantly, white-light emission can be achieved by encapsulating yellow- or green/red-emitting guest organic molecule into blue-emissive USTC-1 and adjusting the content of guest organic molecules. In addition, the white-light emissive USTC-1 composite materials can also be easily achieved by variation of the inclusion amount of single Eu3+ or Tb3+ ion in the host framework of USTC-1. The present work firstly reported white-light MOF-based composite materials by encapsulation of single organic molecule (non-dye molecule), and such strategy may open new perspectives for developing novel white-light emission materials by encapsulation of organic molecules or lanthanide ions.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are well known for their tunable structure and porosity. Many studies have shown they are promising for various important applications, for which their performance can be further enhanced by encapsulating functional species, such as luminescent guest molecules, within the frameworks. Although numerous MOFs are luminescent, very few emit white light and their quantum yield is usually low. Here we report a strategy to achieve efficient white-light emission by encapsulating an iridium complex in the MOF cavity. A mesoporous blue-emitting MOF is prepared as host to encapsulate a yellow-emitting iridium complex, [Ir(ppy) 2 (bpy)] + . The resultant composites emit bright white light with good colour quality (for example, Commission International de I’Eclairage coordinates, colour-rendering index and correlated colour temperature of (0.31, 0.33), 84.5 and 5409 K, respectively), and high quantum yield up to 115 °C. This strategy may open new perspectives for developing high-performance energy-saving solid-state lighting materials.

Abstract:Highly luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs) have received great attention for their potential use in energy-efficient general lighting devices such as white-lightemitting diodes (WLEDs); however, achieving strong emission with controllable color, especially high-quality white light, remains a considerable challenge. Herein, we present a new strategy to encapsulate in situ multiple dyes into nanocrystalline ZIF-8 pores to form an efficient dyes@MOF system. Using this strategy, we build three models, namely, multiphase single-shell dye@ZIF-8, single-phase single-shell dyes@ZIF-8, and single-phase multishell dyes@ZIF-8, to systematically and fine-tune the white emission color by varying the components and concentration of encapsulated dyes. The study of these three models demonstrates the importance of the multishell structure, which can effectively reduce the interactions such as Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) between encapsulated dyes. This energy transfer would otherwise be unavoidable in a single-shell setting, which often reduces the efficiency of white-light emission in the dyes@MOF system. This approach offers a new perspective not only for fine-tuning the emission color within nanoporous dyes@MOFs but also for fabricating MOF nanocrystals that are easily solution-processable. The strategy may also facilitate the development of other types of MOF-guest nanocomposite systems.
Stable and Bright CsPbX3 Nanocrystals in Metal-Organic Frameworks for White Light-Emitting Diodes

Abstract:The stability of metal halide perovskite (CsPbX3, X = Cl, Br, and I) nanocrystals (NCs) is crucial for their practical applications. In this paper, perovskite NCs were synthesized in situ in lead-based metal-organic frameworks (Pb-MOFs: [Pb2(1,3,5-HBTC)2(H2O)4]·H2O), and we obtained stable and bright luminescence composites with different colors. Namely, CsPbBr3@Pb-MOF composites were created by the in situ growth of CsPbBr3 crystals (NCs) on Pb-MOF, which had high ion resistance, bright photoluminescence (PL), and excellent stability. The composites still had bright luminescence after 11 months of storage. The PL intensity of green-emitting CsPbBr3@Pb-MOF composites was increased compared with as-prepared CsPbBr3 NCs. Bright and stable blue- and red-emitting CsPbX3@Pb-MOF composites were obtained by adjusting the amount of PbX2 (X = Cl, Br, and I) in the synthesis process. These CsPbX3 NCs were homogeneously distributed in Pb-MOF substrates. The growth of CsPbX3 NCs in Pb-MOFs prevented NC aggregation and decreased surface defects against nonradiative recombination during emitting. Thus, the PL lifetime and stability were improved. Furthermore, white light-emission diodes were prepared using three color CsPbX3@Pb-MOF composites with Commission Internationale de I'Eclairage color coordinates of (0.296, 0.316). This result provided an efficient way to overcome the limitation of chemical solution synthesis and improve the stability of CsPbX3 NCs.
Encapsulation of AIEgens within Metal–Organic Framework toward High‐Performance White Light‐Emitting Diodes

Abstract:A simple and feasible strategy to achieve high‐performance white light‐emitting diodes is proposed by encapsulating aggregation‐induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) into the channel of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). Accordingly, a single‐phase MOF composite with the CIE chromaticity coordinates of (0.35,0.34) and an excellent quantum efficiency of 64.9% is demonstrated. White light‐emitting diodes (WLEDs) have a wide range of applications in display and illumination, however, it is still challenging to achieve efficient solid‐state white light‐emitting (WLE) materials due to the conventional quenching effect. Herein, a strategy of encapsulating aggregation‐induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) into the pores of metal–organic framework (MOF) to achieve high‐performance WLED is proposed. Two cationic dyes, 2,3,4,5‐tetrakis(4‐methoxyphenyl)oxazol‐3‐ium (MOTPO) and 1‐methyl‐4‐(4‐(1,2,2‐triphenylvinyl)phenyl)pyridin‐1‐ium (TPEPy) with bright blue and yellowish green emissions, respectively, are synthesized and successfully incorporated into the pore of anionic MOF ZJU‐28. The synergy of AIE characteristics and confinement effect within hybrid material result in an enhanced emission signal in comparison to each of the individual components. The single‐phase WLE material with Commission International de L'Eclairage coordinates of (0.35, 0.34) and the quantum efficiency of 64.9% is realized by optimizing the ratio between the two guests, which is almost the best among the reported WLE MOF composites to date. The resulting WLED demonstrates the maximum external quantum efficiency of 12.67% accompanied by the excellent color‐rendering index and correlated color temperature of 86 and 4076 K, respectively. Moreover, the WLE flexible film is also achieved. This work will provide new insights and strategies for the design of efficient WLEDs in the future.
